In this On Fire guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of Eddie Van Halen’s amazing guitar parts for this classic off of Van Halen I.
The tuning is Eb standard tuning. That is, starting from the 6th string, Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.
Eddie throws so many unique riffs into this one, making is a blast to play. I will take you through each riff of the song in the order that each appears on the original recording.

This is crazy, imagine Eddie came up with all this in the 70's. It takes 40 minutes to do a complete educational guitar lesson. How did he even invent all the riffs? No wonder everyone had that first album in their vehicle cruising main street. I had to buy a guitar immediately, just so I could attempt to play 1% of a song. I always used the wrong cords. Just watching these lessons is fascinating. Trying to add the E string during a riff is like flying a helicopter.

Eddie still lives, thanks in part to great lessons like this. You get the weird harmonic thingy right, most other lessons don't.
Thanks Carl. Here's a helpful pointer for viewers that can get overlooked... for the harmonic part if you pluck the strings closer to the bridge it helps sound out those "even" fret position harmonics better. This same technique also works for well the harmonics on Poundcake. The reason has to do with placing the vibration node better in line with the pick tip strike point so the energy doesn't get dampened out because of the odd string length relative to its natural vibration length tendencies. HTH.
