  • Osteoporosis is a bone disorder resulting in bone fragility increasing chances of bone fracture. It is more common in women than men. It is affected by several hormones including parathyroid hormone, thyroid hormone, estrogen and testosterone.
    The risk factors include advancing age, calcium and vitamin D deficiency, smoking, drinking alcochol and sedentary lifestyle. Other risk factors are Caucasian and Asian ethnicities, being underweight and medications like gluccocorticoids and anticonvulsants.
    Osteoporosis may be postmenopausal resulting from low levels of estrogen or senile resulting from advancing age.
    various signs and symptoms of osteoporosis include fractures of hip, spine or wrist, Dowager's Hump or it may be asymptomatic.
    Gold standard for diagnosis of osteoporosis is DEXA Scan.
    Preventive measures are smoking cessation, regular exercise, taking calciuma nd vitmin D supplements and stopping alcohol consumption.
    Medical management comprises administration of various medication including hormone replacement. The various medications prescribed in osteoporosis are teriparatide, raloxifene, denosumab, bisphosphonates, calcitonin and hydrochlorothiazide.
