I wish OMD or Pana would release a tiny sized camera with all the bells and whistles of their bigger high end model. Compact overall system size is the reason I still keep my m43 gear.
GX880 has a small handgrip on the front so it is a new model for anyone reading this. That is an identifier but what else is different difficult to know.
thanks for all your videos that are very helpful. Im traveling often and i need a light and compact camera for street photografy for both photos and videos that can take sharp pictures and video in 1080 60p which camera you recommend Panasonic GX-800 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX80 . Thank you
Fantastic Commentary...Big point though is that very few buyers of this camera IMO are interested in interchangeable lenses! Well said at the end of end of end your commentary!
Gordon, you state that there is no advantage to the 4/3 sensor if you just keep the kit lens and that the Lumix LX 10/15 might be better choice due to its brighter lens. But your review as well reviews by others all point out that the LX 10 has significant amount of cropping as soon you use even small amount of zoom and even when shooting just 1080 video. Is it the case that the GX850 wouldn't crop as much as the LX 10 ? Thank You.
great review. I am thinking of buying this camera as my sub camera. In these times of working from home, that tilt up screen can be handy if this camera can be used as a webcam via HDMI output. Does the HDMI port on this cam support clean hdmi output? Or is it only for viewing photos and videos on tv?
A very nice & fair review. These days you can get a really nice black and white photo using an iPhone & its built in editing tools, or by using the free version of the BLACK app with its Tri-X 400 and HP 5 presets.
Gordon Laing Well my Gx8 had it too and i have seen the camera store do it with i believe the G7. It's called snapfilm if i recall. It was buried in the menu's but i had a quick button on the touchscreen for it. it memorized 2 focus points and then smoothly transitioned in a preset programmable time. obviously during 4k Can't check where it was in the menu since we went all fujifilm a couple of weeks ago. The X-T2/X-T20 eliminated the need for Panasonic for video for us. And Fujifilm is just better and faster for stills.
Another excellent review - thank you! One advantage of this camera is for existing MFT users. I have a Panasonic G80 which I love - but I quite fancy one of these to accompany it - and take with me on my bike etc. Considering the lens alone costs £340 in the UK - the camera's only costing £80 on top! And although not very bright, it's a handy lightweight small lens. I would consider using this lens on my G80 since the 12-60 is considerably bigger.
I want to know, when you turn on flash and use selfie, does it have the 3 sec count down timing? if have can it be remove? and can 4k photo mode be used in flash? As I want to use it with flash + 4k photo mode. Thanks.
Great test. I just bought it. The only thing that really can be better is the battery because of capacity and because it takes 130 minutes to recharge (and in this time you cannot use it). It’s a good idea to buy a external base to charge and a second battery.
Hello. This is a question about Mr. Lange new book mentioned in this review. Forgive me please about asking my question before finishing your review. Does your book cover photography tips and education geared also towards cameras such as the Panasonic DMC-LX10? This is the camera that I just purchased, and would like to find more information on the compact cameras, as I use it for photography on extended backpacking trips and choose the lighter weight option of a camera to cary.
Hi there, the book is entirely shot with mirrorless cameras BUT the techniques apply to most cameras. There's a handful where I've used ultra wide or telephoto lenses, but generally it's about light, composition and technique. So while it won't all be applicable to your LX10, you'll hopefully find some of it useful, and it also works as a travel coffee table book. Plus, you'll be supporting my work too! Thanks!
Great, in-depth video format.. love it, i’m only 5.48mins in and i just went ahead and ordered the gx800 😂🤦🏻♂️ but ive read other stuff on it.. cheers guys 👍🏻
Hi Gordon and Doug - I'm so close to pulling the trigger on this camera, but another TH-cam video talking about this camera noted that you couldn't set the shutter speed and aperture at the same time in video mode - is that true? I'm not as concerned about aperture as I am about shutter speed, because I want to take advantage of all the 4K photo modes and want to make sure I can get the shutter speed fast enough to freeze the action. Also, it seems like the US gets an all black version, while the rest of us have to settle with the silver with black/orange/pink accents only
Shooting 4K Photo is different to shooting 4K video. The 4K Photo modes let you shoot in P, A, S or M, so you have full control over exposure. The only caveat is a minimum shutter speed to allow the video frame rate.
Gordon Laing I bought your book instead - I think it is better value for me than buying from B&H (US to Aus forex is a bit crap) hopefully it's better for you too 👍 look forward to trying all the "recipes" out :D
Yes, still using my half broken Nikon J3 with the 18.5/1.8 lens (50mm equivalent). Still better results than a m43 sensor with a slow kit-lens. BUT, I do own the cheap Pana 25mm/1.7 and this should make for really nice shots with the GX850 with short depth of field :)
Great video👍🏻. I'm looking to buy a camera. I have been looking at mirrorless cameras. So far I have looked at the one in the video and the Nikon 1 J5. I'm looking for one with that old style look to it, the only flaw is that I'd rather they had a VF. Are there any other ones on the market the same style with a VF? I don't want to spend too much as I mainly use a Nikon D3300 and I'm just looking for something a little easier to have with me whilst out and about.
There's lots of mirrorless cameras with viewfinders, but they'll be larger than those without and more expensive too. I'd recommend them, but they'd really replace your Nikon, not complement it. Maybe you should be considering a high-end compact camera with a viewfinder, like a Sony RX100 III? Have a look at my buyer's guides to get some ideas: www.cameralabs.com/best-mirrorless/
hey gordon!! great video. I had a question though - I'm going to go travelling to south america and so I'd like to be taking photos of landscapes etc. Based on the 850gx stock stand lens, would you recommend the gx850 or the song rx100 iii ? Thank you :-)
Hi Matthew, I'd only go for an interchangeable lens camera if you genuinely intend to swap lenses at some point in the future. Otherwise you'll essentially be able to match their performance with a smaller 1in class compact with their brighter lenses, like the RX100 series. If you want all the 4k Photo features and can live without an EVF, the Lumix LX10 / LX15 is another good option. The Lumix GX800 / GX850 kit zoom is ok, but again you're really paying for and carrying around a camera that's designed to take different lenses at some point. Have a great trip! PS - if you're shopping at Amazon, B&H or Adorama, please do click through to them via my review links to support my work, thanks!
Gordon Laing is there a big difference between image quality between the 1 inch sensor and m43 when shooting in good lightning other than bokeh? Is the gx850 larger sensor more crisp in good lightning than LX10?
Also, if I choose to search out a small lighter weight camera that may be equiped with more functions such as a mirrorless of some type, what would you guys recomend? Thank you!!
many thanks. great vid. especially the discussion from 30:30 min on was very very helpful to me (small entry mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras vs. compact 1inch sensor fixed lens cameras ...i have a sony fullframe camera, which is relatively small, but not small enough for a everyday pocket cam. So I am looking for the best-picture-quality-everyday-allpurpose-pocket-camera to mainly replace my phone camera. ..and this video helped me a lot in decision making ..will check out the LX10). cheers
Very helpful review, even tho i dont understand many of the technical informations, they are explained well and it all makes sense now. Also, made me rethink HOW i want to use a camera im buying, thank you for that! Will take everything into consideration :)
nice video as always - thanks guys - yes a RX100m3 or 4 or LX10/5 or GX7 more practical for many - but for those who want to improve their photos will want an interchangeable lens camera - The Lumix 42.5 F1.7 with IS is fantastic and not so expensive -
Guys: great review as you hit on the nail exactly what I was trying to get my head around in trying to choose between GX800/RX100 I&II/G7xII/TZ100/LX15 when it comes to sensor size and f ranges. I keep thinking surely bigger sensor must be better...but hang on, how does that trade off against the lens' speed/ISO's work? I had pretty much stumbled blindly to the same overall conclusion as Gordon spelled out re being prepared to buy extra (expensive) lenses with the GX800 but now I can quantify the rationale. And I guessed in advance that Gordon was from Brighton when he did an impression of a bird (bloody gulls) going for the pizza!
For those that are curious, I reviewed Gordon's book IN CAMERA at the New York Journal of Books. Excellent book! www.nyjournalofbooks.com/reviewer/richard-rivera
I understand the reason for using microsd in the cam, but I detest those things, even in my phone. never would buy an ilc that used one. I own 4 lumix m43 cams since 2011 and love them.
Thank YOU for the book. I can sit down and study the photos and look at your settings. I am starting to get a good item of what setting I should have for certain types of pictures. Very straight forward. The back ground you give in your text helps with the understanding of your process too. Plus it is very entertaining! I like that I can pick up the book, go to one page / one picture and study it as long or as short as I like and then set the book down. Just and excellent study guide!
Yes, I agree. I received it here in Slovakia. It is a very nice book with tons of tips and great variety of situations of shooting + cameras involved. I might buy some more as gifts for amateurs photographers like me :)
Something I miss on these entry-level mirrorless cameras is a hot shoe. You can get into mirrorless at even lower cost with the Sony A5000 which is still available, but of course without the touch screen, 4K or viewfinder (and a horribly convoluted menu system).
My video is looking terrible at 1080p on this camera in good lighting and I’m overwhelmed by the options and terrible manual.. Can anyone tell me , what picture mode is in the record settings for example. The in camera guild is very unclear. The photos are fantastic but I am dishearten by awful video in decent lighting too. Can anyone put there help, there is no way 1080p should look this bad
This won't help, but I genuinely ONLY use the default settings for style and processing. I do mostly shoot in Manual with Auto ISO where available so I can set my desired shutter and aperture combo, but that's it.
this is a really good camera first time (this camera size / little camera) i have no eye cancer (lowest Noise Reduction setting at ISO 100) because bad image quality 😏 🙂.
T6 compelling?! Hell no. No sensor cleaning only 3 fps and an 8 year old piece of garbage sensor. D3300 sure. D3400/T6 hell no. The Rx100 mk2 is a F1.8-4.9. So it doesn't have the benefit over the Gx800. Gordon you have done one of the best lens comparisons of these models. (with the Canon G7x (mk2) lens. Which is still quote quiet often to show that the longer lens of the Canon comes at a price at the wide-end. Still you can get a G7x (slow one) for this money. Which if you only shoot Jpeg(it's too damn slow in raw) is pretty compelling. If you want flexibility ILC's win. Agree with that conclusion. Especially with the Panasonic 42.5mm F1.7 OIS. Think about skaters that get access to the genuinely brilliant 7.5mm Samyang. Unfortunately 4k isn't that adviseable given the crop. But having something this small light and powerful sure has it's merit. Heck you might even be able to tape it under a drone. with that lens (albeit recording blind)
You're right, it is called the GF9 in Japan, but Panasonic didn't mention that to me in their briefing. Plus I'm from the UK, so I'm going to make content aimed at people from this region, and conversely I'd expect a Japanese channel not to mention that it's called something else in Europe. But I got so much wrong here, it's shocking. What else was incorrect? Tell me.
I wish OMD or Pana would release a tiny sized camera with all the bells and whistles of their bigger high end model. Compact overall system size is the reason I still keep my m43 gear.
Yes, I miss the really small ones.
That would be an amazing vlog camera if it had internal stabilization. Or if they had one of their amazing Pana Leica lenses with an as good IS
Top review! I liked how you showed the hidden features of the Panasonic GX800, now I'm going to buy it definitely!
Love it whenever Gordon personifies a camera (or bird in this episode)!
Jordan @ TCSTV
I'm gonna fly! I'm gonna get me off the ground!
Thank you very much for taking the time to get bac to me! Have a great day!
Is there any reason why they couldn't have included the 5-axis stabilization like in the GX85?
I guess the body was full already, hence the micro SD
yes, size and price
Great review as always 👍 I am very interested in this camera because of all the 4K photo features and the potential with micro 4/3 lenses
Hi does anyone know if this has clean HDMI output?
How do i close the lense with out the big One attached?
Fantastic review Gordon, do you know what are the main differences with the GX880 new model?
Sounds like a regional variation.
GX880 has a small handgrip on the front so it is a new model for anyone reading this. That is an identifier but what else is different difficult to know.
thanks for all your videos that are very helpful. Im traveling often and i need a light and compact camera for street photografy for both photos and videos that can take sharp pictures and video in 1080 60p which camera you recommend Panasonic GX-800 or

Best revue I've seen of most any camera! Must have a look at your other videos :-)
Thanks, I hope you enjoy them!

Video and stills. Does the GX850 generally crop a bit less than the LX10 ? Cheers
How does this stack up against the Oly EP-L8? But I do tend to agree that the LX10 might be a better choice at this point.
Is the body plastic? Even the silver
The gx800/850 is called the gf9 in asia.how is that for confusing
Is this the same camera as the "Panasonic dc-gx800kegs"? The names confusses me... Please answer.
Would you choose this over the canon gtx mark 2 for vlogging? Thanks

@@cameralabs thanks Gordon. It seems that clean hdmi output is blocked on lumix gf series and lx series. :)
A very nice & fair review. These days you can get a really nice black and white photo using an iPhone & its built in editing tools, or by using the free version of the BLACK app with its Tri-X 400 and HP 5 presets.
While touch focus hunts you can set-up panasonic's before hand to do very easy smooth focus pulls.
You can program focus-pulls on the GH5, but I've not seen it on the lower end models.

Great stuff
I'm debating between this and g9x II for ultra portable travel..
Well the G9X II is much smaller but you can't swap lenses AND its lens is quite dim for the sensor size. Also consider the Lumix LX10 / LX15...
Can you use the Olympus thin body lens? Body Cap Lens 15mm
You can use any Micro Four Thirds lens with this.
Go GX85. It's only slightly larger and has 5-axis IBIS.
... and it has a crop in 4K, EP-7 is way better 😊
hey gordon!! great video. I had a question though - I'm going to go travelling to south america and so I'd like to be taking photos of landscapes etc. Based on the 850gx stock stand lens, would you recommend the gx850 or the song rx100 iii ? Thank you :-)

I think this camera is a bit expensive when you can buy a G7 for about the same price, or lower.
👏👏👏 Great review as always
Thanks!
As far as cheap mirrorless with viewfinders, Olympus om-d em10 mark ii is $599 and Panasonic G7 is $497
Yes that's true, but like the A6000 they are older models now. I hope the EM10 gets an upgrade soon.

So much wrong information. By the way, it is NOT a GX800 "in the rest of the world". Try checking out the GF9, for a start.
Tell me.
