@@PieInTheSky9 Currently obsessed with Vers La Flamme. listen to the Zhukov version until you are familiar (very accurate and clear recording) and then listen to the 1951 Heinrich Neuhaus version. It will blow your mind. Also listen to the Richter version. Two different interpretations that I like almost equally. Sofronitsky and Horowitz miss the mark on this one. They both peak too early so the last couple minutes sound kind of monotonous. Horowitz tries to make up for it by adding extra notes and it is honestly a bit obnoxious.

been returning often to this, she's very consistent & straight with it...... no histrionics, no drug hype, just feeling her way through it, the depths of this music..... seems that women are often the most sensitive interpreters of Scriabin, that they "get" the mystic element of the music...... anyway, thank you Ms. Lettberg, & Le Sheet Music Boi for posting
PS that said: Hamelin (5), Ashkenazy (6), Chernov (8), all great... as for the women, Wang (10) & Koyama's incredible #3..... (all on you tube)..... but at this level, all concert pianists have to possess like an extraterrestial intelligence

All in all very brilliant performances. A few minor quibbles here and there, but I think those might be more interpretative than incorrect readings of the text. In the Eighth sonata Ms. Lettburg glosses over the rests after the descending double-note figures. I much prefer Boris Berman's reading of that sonata, where he is careful to give the pauses their full value. But as I say, these are minor quibbles. All in all I am very glad I bought the excellent set Ms. Lettburg recorded of the complete piano music. The many miniatures that Scriabin wrote are enigmatic and fleeting sketches, packing a great deal of exquisite music into such tiny forms. It saddens me to think that he only lived to be 43. Imagine what he might have accomplished had he lived 20, 15, 10, or even just 5 more years. One of the great tragedies of music. Let us be thankful he composed as much as he did. Another thing I admire about Scriabin is that he only played his own music in recital. And audiences appreciated his music, filling every hall he played in and enthusiastically applauding his genius.

One could theoretically analyze it as a chain of extended dominant chords that all have super complex voice leading, but it's kind of an unsatisfactory approach. There are several papers that analyze late Scriabin using a variety of methods, and they all have their pros and cons- but the long and short of it is that sonata 6 is most assuredly not G major

I had an idea. "Tasting Scriabin" is a unique sensory fusion where a performance of each of Alexander Scriabin's piano sonatas is paired with a dish that embodies the music's spirit. From an edible oyster shell containing a mix of seafood and fruits that reflect Sonata No.1's pathos, to the exotic fruit sorbet mimicking Sonata No.5's journey towards ecstasy. The dramatic, dark flavors of charcoal-grilled wagyu beef align with Sonata No.9's intense undertones. This exploration heightens appreciation for both music and taste, creating an unforgettable synesthetic experience. Anyone wanna collaborate?

@@Mitesse Lol I've thought the whole thing out at this point: Tasting Scriabin
Scriabin's 10 piano sonatas are an incredible journey through a wide range of emotions, complexity, and musical evolution. Below is a proposed 10-course tasting menu, with each dish reflecting the personality and character of each sonata, progressively amplifying in complexity, and following a tasteful progression from course to course.
Course 1 - Sonata No.1 in F minor, Op. 6: This sonata has a youthful, classical style, yet dramatic in its own way. The first course could be a traditional, elegant dish with a surprising twist: an Amuse-bouche of 'Oysters and Pearls', where the oyster is replaced with a fresh melon ball, providing an unexpected yet refreshing and elegant start.
Course 2 - Sonata No.2 in G sharp minor, Op. 19 'Sonata Fantasy': This sonata carries a sense of mystery and longing. The dish could be a Japanese-style sashimi platter, with translucent slices of delicate fish symbolizing the sense of yearning and the hint of wasabi reflecting the passionate undercurrents.
Course 3 - Sonata No.3 in F sharp minor, Op. 23: With its turbulent mood changes, this sonata deserves a dish with contrasting flavors: a salad of bitter greens, sweet roasted beets, salty feta, and a tangy citrus vinaigrette.
Course 4 - Sonata No.4 in F sharp Major, Op. 30: This sonata is ethereal and dream-like. A dish of scallop ceviche with delicate citrus and herb notes would reflect its ephemeral and otherworldly nature.
Course 5 - Sonata No.5, Op. 53: A pivotal piece, the 5th sonata carries a sense of discovery and liberation. The course could be a palate cleanser, perhaps a sorbet of unusual, exotic fruit, symbolizing breaking away from the familiar.
Course 6 - Sonata No.6, Op. 62: Haunting and dissonant, the 6th sonata demands a dish with intense flavors. A dish of squid ink pasta, with its dramatic color and rich taste, served with a spicy 'nduja sauce, could mirror the sonata's mood.
Course 7 - Sonata No.7, Op. 64 'White Mass': A captivating dish of Liquid Nitrogen Poached Coconut and Lemon Grass Espuma, served over a bed of Snow Crab and Caviar, with shards of golden sugar glass protruding from the dish like frozen white flames.
Course 8 - Sonata No.8, Op. 66: An enchanting plate of Spherified Mango Caviar over Lobster Medallions, with a Golden Saffron and Champagne Foam, served on a bed of smoke from dry ice, creating a visually stunning dish that mimics the spontaneous sparks of the sonata.
Course 9 - Sonata No.9, Op. 68 'Black Mass': A striking dish of Squab cooked sous-vide then finished with a blowtorch for a perfect sear, served on a mirror glaze black garlic puree. Accompanied by Charcoal-infused Potato Dauphinoise and a Black Truffle Jus spherified into glossy pearls that burst with flavor in your mouth.
Course 10 - Sonata No.10, Op. 70: For the final course, present 'The Symphony of Ecstasy' - a chocolate sphere, constructed from layered textures of tempered dark, milk, and white chocolates, each layer filled with a different exotic fruit mousse - passionfruit, raspberry, and lychee. The sphere is served over an intricate web of spun sugar, and the waitstaff pours a warm gold-flecked Grand Marnier sauce tableside, causing the sphere to slowly melt and reveal the layers within.
These final dishes would require advanced culinary techniques, including molecular gastronomy, to capture the complexity, depth, and thrill of Scriabin's later sonatas, making them an extravagant finale to a culinary symphony.

The 5th sonata is F# major, and some sources list the 6th sonata as G major. The 7 to 10th sonatas are not tonal.

This lol... there's so many greats to choose from for each and every piano sonata, but Lettberg is just weak and tasteless in comparison. I swear the only reason she's so popular is because she's the top choice on Spotify for Scriabin.

Like with Ravel, I'm not picking up on clear or consistent structure and form or strong melodies with Scriabin. To me, it's dense, frenetic and incomprehensible. A million fractured and splintered pieces sewn up into one incoherent tapestry. Maybe I'll understand it better at a later stage in life or after many more years of listening.

ok i can see that but im not seeing the comparison to ravel because his works have clear structure and so does these works if you give them a decent listen honestly i thought that too but you will here melodies in and out and sonatas truly are a pretty free form

Ravel is insanely melodic and a master of form. The same applies to late Scriabin in terms of form and harmony. If you were like me and the first impression of Ravel was Scarbo, it’s maybe understandable, but even that has a very well-knit structure (the motif in the first 10 seconds echoes through the entire piece, for example). In terms of melody, the Lever du Jour movement from Daphnis and Chloe, second mvmt of g major concerto, le tombeau de couperin, I could go on.

Sicuramente io ritengo al contrario della critica il periodo decade di scriabin dalla quarta sonata in poi..
