Never forget when Suda 51 said he initially didnt wanna work on Fatal Frame because " Makoto Shibata can see real ghosts" and he "simulates a real ghost experience in the game" and didn't elaborate on that
I had never noticed the mansion becoming less run-down as you go, but it makes perfect sense. The first night, you're dealing with the most recent victims' spirits, Takamine's group. Then the second, you encounter the folklorist's family, and finally, you go even further back in time to Kirie and the ghosts of her and the Malice's initial victims.
I always find the decayed Japanese style home environment of Fatal Frame to be super unnerving. Like at one point these were brand new homes that had joy and life and now they are rotted and abandoned with the night setting only making them extra creepier. At least Silent Hill has settings that take place during the day.
Personally I love finding all the notes to explain the story. It doesn't make sense to me if Miku can see into the past to see historic events, or whatever other solution there could be to not reading notes. It just makes the most sense.
My favorite horror franchise ! The only game I played in every difficulties, Nightmare was hell in Fatal Frame 3 xD can't wait to play Fatal Frame 4 for the first time next year ! Even if I don't really like what they've done to Miku in the last game, Fatal Frame has a special place in my heart.
This was a great watch. I can’t stomach horror media (with a few exceptions) so these videos are my only way to experience these games. Keep up the good work!
@@tangomushiThe Voice acting is really bad but at the same time it definitely helps bring that eerie atmosphere that The Creators were hoping would make it bone chillingly terrifying.
About the name Project Zero... The word for zero in Japanese is rei 零, which looks similar and is homophonous with rei 霊, which means soul or spirit. Also it is a component of the word for ghost / yuurei 幽霊
To anyone lamenting the lack of a Japanese voice track option, there finally are fanmade undub patches available for each of the three original PS2 games. I replayed the PS2 trilogy undubbed on PCSX2 and had a great time, minor emulation quirks not withstanding. (If you wanted and have your PS2 hard or soft-modded you could even play the undubbed games on original hardware) There are still some lines that are not covered by the subtitles in each game though, so some knowledge of Japanese may come in handy.
I've always wanted to play horror games, its just that I get terrible nightmares afterwards so ive decided to just watch review and breakdowns instead. tyvm for the reviews you've done its been very enjoyable.
Well to be fair the game has inverted aim, probably a lot of people don't feel they are good at the game because of that. I noticed how bad it is to play it nowadays since it is supposed to be a shooter with ghosts when you enter combat, so aiming with the left stick and moving with the right one is not intuitive and takes a LOT to get used to.
I don't usually leave comments anywhere cause I'm so shy but your vibes are so damn cool!! I've been binge watching your videos lately lmao The madotsuki plush, the sonic hat in your endslate.. ahh Im so glad your channel got recommended to me :D !! Much love!
5:00 Agreed! The same happened for me when I played the A Plague Tale games. The first one didn't have a french language option, but the second one I played in french and it was so cool, it definitely helps with the immersion. Good videos! Thank you very much
Great review! Fatal Frame's one of my favourite games but it definitely has its... quirks. Most of which you mentioned in this video! 😅 I just found your channel but I can already tell I'll enjoy the rest of your content. It's also nice to find another Irish person reviewing J-horror games!! Also, I had NO idea you could shake off ghosts in this and I've played it through at least 5 times...
It took me a shameful amount of time to shake off ghosts too... really wish I knew it earlier on haha, cuz that final chapter or two can be a killer! Pleasure to meet a fellow Irish creator also! Thank you so much Oranalysis
@Edel Tamayo Absolutely adore those games, they're criminally underrated horrors - definitely would like to deep dive into one of them before the end of the year!! Great shout!
I'm late to the party, but I just want to say that I adore your channel! These videos are insightful, well-crafted and fun to listen to (and watch). I hope you keep it up, I love binging your videos.
Great review mate, it’s like I’m watching me if I were not a procrastinator and I actually worked on videos, anywho amazing review mate, fatal frame was one of my many favorite childhood horror games
Videos are a lot of effort but incredibly satisfying - best of luck if you get back on the grind! Thank you so much for watching - Fatal Frame is a classic 🥰
Fatal Frame is my favorite horror series! I love it so much. I hope you keep covering the series, Fatal Frame 3 is my favorite but I actually thought it was the worst one the first time I went through the series, so I always love hearing people's initial opinions on it.
I stumbled upon your videos randomly and I'm so glad I did. I've been into horror games since I was very young and love hearing your thoughts on my favorite games. The PS2 era had THE BEST horror games hands down. Thank you for making these!!
Fatal Frame is my favorite horror series of all time, for sure. Your coverage of it is great! I think the second one is better, but I will say that Fatal Frame continues to use the same type of story telling through notes and diaries, but I think as it goes on there’s a lot more environmental cues. Anyway, great review!
For a second I thought I was watching a new video by *Eurothug4000* or something but then discovered the algorithm has randomly pointed me at yet another great new gaming creator! I'll cross my fingers for this channel to become better known(and more abundant in subscribers obviously)!!! Have a nice day!
I never got why on earth they put "Project" in the name for the European release, "Project Zero" sounds like the codename for a sci fi project, not the release name for a historical horror game. Anyway I've always struggled to get into this series because the RPG mechanics, kinda: you're mechanically rewarded for getting those rare ghost shots, but they can be really hard to get when you don't know they're coming and only ever happen once. So I felt a compulsion to constantly reload my save to make sure I got all those ghost pics for the exp. edit: nice World of Horror shirt. I didn't even realize they made merch lol.
I definitely plan to go back and give the rest of the franchise some love! I have the next few video topics lined up but Fatal Frame is definitely not forgotten :D Thank you for watching!
I liked they gave Miku more time in Project Zero 3. Definitely my least favourite of the 3 but not a bad game. Played 2 before 1 so I think I was a bit spoiled too.
I never got around to 3 (will deffo get to reviewing it eventually) but it's awesome Miku was given more love since she's the real OG of the franchise (and often forgotten in favour of the other protags)!! Thank you for watching 🥰
Alright it's been months and I've finally finished the game. Absolutely loved it, even with the cheesy voice acting the game still spooked me. Thanks for the video!
Fatal Frame was OK...but I've never finished it😅Camera Obscura controls was inverted between camera and normal view (at least on PS2). I've never get used to it.
Loved the first three games. That damn ghost under the study desk in FF3 pretty much made my heart stop. Checked out the last ones and ended up wondering why all these ancient Japanese ghosts have massive…physical attributes. Anyway, I’m still hoping FF2 gets a resi style remake. All that oppressive atmosphere with current gen realism would probably turn my hair white.
This is a really well-done review - thank you! It wasn't until watching this that it occurred to me the significance of naming the camera 'Camera Obscura'. I wonder if it has the same name in Japanese, or if that's a Western flourish.
One of my fav franchises ever, I played the first 3 games and finished 2 and 3! Still expecting to finish the first one too and to this day FF3 remains as my fav, with the most beautiful ending in the series for me too! Thanks for the video!
I absolutely will! I think when I return to the Fatal Frame franchise, it’ll be one big franchise retrospective tackling the games altogether, rather than singular videos like this one. But I’ll definitely finish what i started here!! ♥️
The one part of the story that drives me nuts is the part about Miku's mother, which is confusing and unclear if you don't check the tab in the menu that lays out who everyone is as you go through the game.
As someone who is an avid survival horror game fan & collector I’m surprised that you gave so much more grace to rule of rose than fatal frame. Fatal frame is probably my favorite franchise in the genre. While Rule of Rose had an interesting story, it wasn’t at all fun to actually play mechanic-wise. Fatal frame had such solid gameplay. I LOVED the story and how it sprinkled it about in documents and photos… it felt investigative. It was super creative and didn’t spoon feed you.
I'm ashamed to admit While I really enjoyed the original - and finished it - have tried THREE times on three separate occasions to play Crimson Butterfly. I don't know what it is about it, but I just can't. I DID enjoy it. I think I still even have it on my PS3. Maybe I should give one more chance. I'm really not a fan of difficulty-locked endings though. That always rubs me the wrong way. Kuen or maybe it's Kuin for the PS2 is also really interesting, and aside from the camera is very similar in tone. Three protagonists to play as and even a Japanese language option for those who want it. I recall both languages being good though.
FF3 definitely seems to be the marmite game of the PS2 games. Some people love it, some people hate it, there's no in-between it seems! Kuon is a fascinating game, and it was made by FromSoft too right? They had such an interesting history pre-Souls games. Definitely gonna have to review that down the line!
I discovered Japanese horror movies in the very early 2000s and so naturally loved games like this and Siren. I always felt Fatal Frame and Siren were like playing through an Asian horror movie, and they were scarier to me than other more well-known series. I wish we could get a proper re-release for both series.
I got this game with the ps2 I got as a teen and man. I am severely biased bc its the only one I played from the series and I also like the european title of "Project Zero" mostly bc thats how it got hardwired into my memory. I just wish Miku had been more fleshed out as a character. It always feels like things are happening to her, or she’s seeing something, rather than her interacting and being a key element of the story.
I first played this game, long ago, with my sister, who is usually much braver at games than me. But we ended up using all our film, getting stuck, and having to stop. When I later began to play on my own, I learned to use less film and take better shots. But it was a hard habit to get into, some of those ghosts are still CREEPY.
2 things: 1. I am surprised you didn’t bring up the US versions lie about the game being based on a true story. For years as a kid I thought these kind of sacrifices went on in ancient Japan. 2. Bit of a spoiler but my favorite sounds from the ghosts were also my least favorite, and those came from the blind woman (“There’s no one here…”)
I actually like bad voice acting in my horror games, probably because I grew up with them, for me it gives them character and even charm. I see dubs as me understanding the language, in my head they're still speaking Japanesse I just understand it without immersion breaking subtitles that I might not even have time to read. I can agree with the voice acting in the first game, but I enjoy the atmosphere and tension! The first two are definitely my favourites, never got around to three.
Highly recommend it! It's not as good as Fatal Frame 2 (in my opinion), but I think it's the most mechanically sound game of the 6th generation installments. The way Fatal Frame 3 tries to connect the trilogy together is a little goofy, but the attempt is entertaining in its own special way.
My parents got me an Xbox second hand off their mate from the pub when I was about 8 and Project Zero was one of the games he’d given them with it, them being older parents who had 0 clue about video games I think they thought ALL video games are for children so they didn’t think to look over what they were giving me 😂 long story short this game scared the living BEJEEZ outta me in my very young years and I still run up the stairs at night like a bat outta hell at the age of 30 and I’m blaming project zero for that 😂👌🏻 I don’t think I could bring myself to play it now, somehow the thought of it is even more scary now that I’m 30 than it was when I was 8 💀💀
Never forget when Suda 51 said he initially didnt wanna work on Fatal Frame because " Makoto Shibata can see real ghosts" and he "simulates a real ghost experience in the game" and didn't elaborate on that
*THEN didn't elaborate on that
Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of Silent Hill, recently kinda confirmed this during his inteview in Harada's Bar hahah
lmao, he didnt want to get haunted by ghosts for sake of making a game
I feel like this is such a pure sigma move
I always thought the the camera combat was based off the old myth that getting your picture taken would steal your soul.
I had never noticed the mansion becoming less run-down as you go, but it makes perfect sense. The first night, you're dealing with the most recent victims' spirits, Takamine's group. It would be amazing in VR!
@Crenando Shimatsu Enjoy

Idk I felt like the lifeless dub added to the scary experience.
Fatal Frame 2 review when
Although I love Fatal Frame 2, the first one I'm very lukewarm on. The voice acting reallllly takes you out of it.
The ending always got on my nerves.
I went through all of this just for you brither to stay with your ghost waifu.😅
My parents got me an Xbox second hand off their mate from the pub when I was about 8 and Project Zero was one of the games he’d given them with it, them being older parents who had 0 clue about video games I think they thought ALL video games are for children so they didn’t think to look over what they were giving me 😂 long story short this game scared the living BEJEEZ outta me in my very young years and I still run up the stairs at night like a bat outta hell at the age of 30 and I’m blaming project zero for that 😂👌🏻 I don’t think I could bring myself to play it now, somehow the thought of it is even more scary now that I’m 30 than it was when I was 8 💀💀
Also I think they had friends over one night and got a bit pished and decided to play it, and my mum was also absolutely haunted by it 😂
I spent have the game thinking you couldn't move while using the camera.
