You can make those plastic bumpers look new again by washing them, then once you have no dirt on them, get the heat gun, and go over it, did it on my corsa bumpers, came up amazing
Hi, commented on one of this series of videos that it's helped me prepare for what I have now started. My drivers side footwell, inner sil have disintegrated. Managed to get galvanised panels for that from Central panels at a good price. After cutting the rot out I found the inner arch had had it too. I couldn't find that but did find a left side on ebay from Rates Ford, contacted them and got a genuine right hand side, it was the most expensive bit so far. Also trying to get the outrigger behind the footwell cause I had to cut that out in order to fit the new inner sil. Ford do seem to do that bit but their parts diagrams are crap. I've come back to your videos cause I also discovered holes in the frame rail as you show in this video. Fortunately the rust isn't as bad on mine so that's something to be grateful for although the drivers side has rusted around the engine mount plate so looking to cut round that and weld a plate in underneath it. Once you'd got those bits welded in this video, did you have any problems with the MOT as that area is the crumple zone. I don't want to weld it and them turn round and say it has to have the creases in it? I've come to conclusion that the front end is designed to rust, as any water runs into the gaps rather than run over the metal edges. There is also a 50mm round hole in front of that engine mount which I'm sure has contributed to water getting in there. Maybe there was a blanking plug there at one time? I've ordered some for various holes now. You help appreciated.
Hi Martin just wanted to thankyou for your videos on your transit. I'm building mine and they helped me loads and saved me a lot of time! Keep up the great work! :)
Cant knock you for you're efforts in keeping it on the road, its a great shame Ford didnt put as much effort in some rust protection underneath, those front chassis rail's are Shocking. The good news is there are plenty of repair panel's available for the mk6 so these can live on..
My first welding was on a transit mk5,lots of rot mainly at the back.I used a mig and just got better and better at it,I've not welded that much since, but once you've learnt it you don't forget and it's easy to get back to it.One thing I can agree with you on,transits are rust buckets, good vid thanks.
Just brought an old camper conversion on a Mk6, was a bit worried about likely future MOT failures due to rust but seeing your channel, I reckon I do do the same as you to keep it going. Cheers, all the best
Hi martin Looks like a good project and a lot of work. Cant wait to see the next video on your transit. I hope jimmy is better now so he can give you a hand
Hi Martin Looks like a lot of work , But sure it will be worth it , no cutting up old fridges . Look forward to seeing how you go . No paint on the inner wings just old primer. No wonder it rotted out .
Just been under my mates Mk6 Transit MWB its a bit rusty but not 'dead' I had to sort his handbrake as I pulled it on a bit too vigorously and it snapped at the end of the cable that attaches to the part that the rear cable connects to the front cable. A quick 'bodge' for a couple of days to see us through (we are in Spain picking up my motorbikes) but handbrake now works as before but it will be fixed when we return to UK in a couple of days...You are right, not many videos on MK6 Transits but Cheers...Great videos!!
That was excellent. Man you guys in England have to deal with tons of rust. Really severe rust. I've seen restorations on old Heeley's and Rare Mini's and the like. But never a Transit.
@@retrorestore It's the salt used on the roads during Winters. Right? No wonder ! guys look for bodies from Arid areas. Even cars in Sydney from the beaches are in better condition. Geees.....as an amateur you really do have some guts and ingenuity to tackle things like that inner guard....and even better, you're doing it live!! I bet you will treat it better than anyone ever did after all that personal effort.
William, my van has just failed the mot. it looks like I'll be making good use of your videos mate. might have to by a mig welder. great enthusiasm bud. I don't feel as bad now. thanks
At least you've got one good side to make templates from just make one patch at a time. Cut out all the rot and start only try and weld so really clean metal it will make the job easier in the long run.
Martin if you have a local breakers yard near you it might be worth having a look to see if they have a transit with a decent inner wing, they will cut it off for you complete then just cut off what you need.
thanks for this i just got my self a transit 05 and how it passed its MOT i dont know i did not bother checking it at the time yep i am a idiot, Anyway its in a right state so its going to need some weiding in 9 months time , thanks again for the vid ..
hi there mate saw this vid first time round but look again still learnnig from it got one of thease vans expect mines acamper van 2002 ford saved all your vids just great
Nice video man, I came across this looking on how to cut out and weld a new rear arch and side door sill, and saw you was removing the wings as I also need to replace one of my outer wings this vid is exellent for me now I know where all the bolts are and to remeber to leave a top bolt in so the wing dont fall down on me, and just like you i aint a welder but i need my van and i cant afford to pay someone but also i aint got the time so I'll see how this pans out, Nice quality video look forward to your welding one. Thanx RangerJay
I've been following your videos for a while now and I don't think I've seen you complete a job from start to finish. You have so many uncompleted jobs that would drive me crazy! Still fun to watch though
Hahhaha, Honest, I have finished many jobs, Honda Superdream, Mazda MX5, Many lawnmowers,Gilera Runner, Direct Bikes moped, Mini, Escort RS Turbo, Polytunnel build, Record player restorations and other equipment to name but a few. It's all good fun. Cheers Martin
Just started watching you do your van Martin, you seem to be struggling a bit with the inner wing, what i've seen on the TV tonight, if you get an old cornflake box, carboard, make a template from the drivers side inner wing, cut round it and then copy it to the side that needs repairing and cut your steel appropriatly, don't forget to disconnect the battery when welding otherwise you will have major problems. P.S. Don't forget you need 0.6 MIG welding wire. Cheers, Delboy.
I own a Ford Taurus, 2002, no where near that kind of rust. Fork Over Repair Dough, Found Outside Rotting Dump, Figure On Rust Deposits, Fix Or Repair Daily. I needed a AirCon fan controller, $5 at the auto Recycle, Check them out for the badly rotted sections, they can cut off from the firewall and give you that whole section. Just line it up and weld in place. Better than bits of pieces here and there, rust will only come back in a few years. That package??? Maybe Cocaine, 'Mule Truck' going to Holland and back. Always stuff to do. After watching that, I gotta have a nap. Cheers Martin Brian
Hi Martin. Really enjoyed your videos. I have also bought a van recently I usually tackle most jobs myself also. But weldings a big NO NO with me. An being a transit mine also needs welding. An pretty much same place as yours. But having watching all your mk6 videos I'm now planning to attemp welding for the 1st time so wish me luck I'll need it
That's great Gary, I was like you, i've always been afraid of welding but now with a mig, it's not that bad and i've improved no end. God luck. Cheers Martin
Nice video Martin. Famed for rust and work horses. Shake ford were cheap on the metal. Made in the south. Remade in the north :-) I have a new custom. Made in turkey but it gets better than that.
Great video martin looks like you have your work cut out there, making templates first will save you alot of wasted metal sheet and I would maybe invest in a bending machine (quite cheap from machine mart). Also the drill bit in your set is a proper spot weld drill bit, it has a flat top for just removing the top sheet of metal. These are very good drill bits but dont drill to much as you will go straight through the panel lol. Andy
Do they use salt on the roads over there in the winter? Here in Michigan they salt the roads and it eats the cars alive. Oddly we don't have to worry about MOT so you should see some of the rust buckets driving around. Great vid as usual. All the best, Jay

Hi mate, been watching your channel, I own a welding company that does vehicle and agricultural welding repairs and fabrication, i know you keep saying your not a welder but fair play to you for having a go, your doing a great job, its people like yourself that help to keep these iconic vehicles on the road, check out our facebook page to see what we get up too, facebook.com/mweldingsolutions/
Get rid of the pat o' cake intro sequence: Please! ;O Mr rust worm has been busy last 14 years. If it'd been a Mk1 it'd be dead and buried in 6? Seemed a bit of a faf to get that wing out. That pack could be a failed illicit drug import! The nearside is the deep puddle side,
Great video cheers,
My 2002 transit just failed on a load of rust spots.. time to get the tools out..
You can make those plastic bumpers look new again by washing them, then once you have no dirt on them, get the heat gun, and go over it, did it on my corsa bumpers, came up amazing
Just took NS wing off my 2001 Transit to push out a dent next to the headlamp. This video was a great help - thanks.

Hiya mate love the colour of your transit what’s the paint code cheers
It was called College Blue bud. Its sold now
retrorestore ok thanks buddy I am gona respray mine the same colour cheers
Brilliant video great detail transits are terrible
Tell me about it

Haha nice one Cheers
Martin
The cause of most if not all that rust will be due to all that salt they put on the roads in winter .
Here in NZ we use only Rock Grit , as a result I own a 1996 Mitsubishi Delica van with bugger all rust .
Bloody hell mate, good luck...lol
Cheers Steve. it needs doing so i'm gonna do it lol.
Cheers
Martin
Wow Martin you don't aft give yourself some work hope it as bad in the other areas all the bast Tony.
It's an interesting project Tony, I'm hoping to learn a bit myself.
Cheers
Martin
Sorry I meant to say not as bad
Yeah, I thought that lol.
looks fairly bad that mate but at least most of the patches are easy enough to make up and you have a fair amount of room to work in, at least on the front end anyways ;)
i would say it would be well worth getting your hands on some Vactan rust treatment off ebay and throw some of that about on the rust area you dont cut out, then just stone chip the inner wings and put a small amount of paint on there to seal the stone chip up. i would say not to use waxoyl as even tho its waterproof it will peal off and let go at some point then what tends to happen is water gets behind it and is then trapped, its also a complete nightmare to remove when bits start to let go.
Vactan is also a self etching rust treatment so no need to use etch primers on bare metal. its also the main rust treatment ive been using on my T4 transporter project (as you may have seen in the photos)
hope all is good fella and Jimmy is on getting on better
Thanks for the heads up on the Vactan, i've just ordered a litre. Sounds like a good treatment. Jimmy's resting now and is not in as much pain.
Cheers
Martin
retrorestore no worries mate, its done me well to be fair. ive left it unpainted for a few weeks and its only just started to re-rust so dose do a pretty good job of it.
thats a good thing mate and i hope he is better soon so he can get cracking with the mini project
Hi...can I just ask what thickness of metal you used on the body and chassis?
The repair panels were 1mm and the plate for the chassis was about 2mm.
Cheers
Martin
Dont use them disposable bottles they are not cheap. If you are on a budget use a co2 pub bottle or a co2 fire extinguisher they can be bought cheap out of date and last ages. Regulators are easy to obtain to.
Already changed over to Hobbygas now bud.
Cheers
Martin
He who dares Martin.
Oh yes Rodney lol
Why don't you have a simple 5 second intro? Or no intro at all lol.
Brilliant video nevertheless, looking forward to more of this series :)
I think you are right. I'll have to get one sorted.
Cheers
Martin
hi there mabee some under seal might help to stop rusting again:)
Vauxhall/Opel Diecast HI bud, check out the rest of the vids to see what I did.
Cheers
Martin
okay i will my dads got a 2011 plate car and we wunt to put some thing on it to stop rust
I use a rust treatment called Vactan. If you watch the transit vids, you'll see what it does to rust.
Cheers
Martin
hi thanks for info theres not really bad rust we just want to seal it from salt and water ect:)
por 15 rust paint black i will use that thanks for youre time :)
made me laugh when i saw that packing. got to have a stout heart to take that on
It's gotta be done so i'll have to get my finger out lol
Cheers
Martin
I hope that van earns you a lot of money
plenty of water traps in transit vans and road salt doesnt help either
+michael jagger You'd think they would sort this out being in the 21st Century.
retrorestore thats the thing about older fords. you dont spend your time fixing them mechanically as they are bombproof. you spend most your time fixing the bodywork lol. could be worse Leyland sherpa/ freight rover 200, pilot vans fell apart after a year or 2.
If you can do small jobs with mig you can do larger work with mig welder
Imagine if in that package thing there hundreds of £50 notes. You could buy a new Transit van lol.
Someone said it looked like a drugs stash lol. I see what they meant lol.
Cheers
Martin
retrorestore nice van mate. Are you kitting it out or just using it as a workhorse ?. Great vids yet again btw.
Matthew Michaels
A bit of both i think. May make some removable units for it.
its a sunday van. very holey lol :)
Nice one Matt. It'll do for me
Cheers
Martin
retrorestore sorry couldnt help myself :). keep up the great work. love the videos :). hows jimmy :)
Back at work but still in a little pain.

Martin
retrorestore thats good to hear. hope hes better soon:). ooo ive found somewhere local that does reclaimed wood :) once our holiday is out the way. the sheds going up :)
