Considering you done the majority of that on your back with no elbow room, it's neater than some so called professional jobs I've seen. Keep up the great work Martin. Your doing a cracking job!
Walked past your house Saturday did not realise how close you actually live, literally around corner from my mother in law. Walked past hundreds times never even realised. Thanks for the vids. Admittedly got to catch up with this transit vids but saw it on the drive still.
You've given me the inspiration to repair my '97 Honda Civic and to weld new rear arches in. We need people like you who can prove that anyone can acomplish something when you put your mind to it. Great Job big man
I’m at the exact same stage with my van, I’m using a gas less mig welder. It’s not perfect but it’s doing the job. Before I’m fitting the new parts I’m painting the insides with hammerite making sure I leave the edges that are going to be welded clear. Whoever isn’t galvanising the metalwork at ford needs a kick in the bools.
Nice job Martin, take no notice of the haters. I've seen so called garage welding and its a bit like garage mechanics, hit & miss. Keep on doing what you do, solid job mate.
Hi Martin, I really appreciated that you done a little walk round of your welder when I have saved up enough money this is the one I want to buy. I liked that you done a normal speed showing some of your welding it’s showing us beginners what to expect from the welder when I finally start learning. Van is coming along nicely. Cheers mate have a good one. Steve.
Doing a great job Martin,I haven't done any bodywork for a while but I think I would have tackled it virtually the same. It's rare to see anyone tackling this sort of work on their drives these days but with your help with these videos it shows what can be achieved. Just takes some can do attitude and common sense. Keep up the good work, looking forward to the next one as always
@@retrorestore nice job welding. I try to weld but i can't do like you. Because my problem is that i don't know what is the correct gas pressure. And i don't know what the measurement is for (wire feed speed) , (welding voltage) and (welding current). I really please i want some help. So i can fix my 2 transits. Thank you.
I’ve watched a lot of videos now Your determination to get the job done is brilliant Also you show and give some good tips to make the job easier for others to have a go Keep up the good work
Looking very tidy now. You can plan for things to happen in a certain order but life will always throw you a curved ball. The tester will be quite happy with your work as if it looks right thats half the battle. I say to people that ask that i am not a welder but i can glue metal together to pass the test. I did not realise that seam sealer is available in a cartridge as i have always used tins and applied by brush. Definitely googling seam sealer application now..
Great job of repairing that sill, and boy a nice inspection pit would go a long way to make your efforts less strenuous. Thank you for another great watch video Sir 👍 Tam.
HI martin what a good video i am working my way through your transit welding repairs job well done keep up the good work your a great ambassador for the home mechanic
What the defender boys recommend for chassis is dintrol, instead of wax oil. Good idea that with the tiger seal, I know its a right pain to get off the old fingers!
Dot to Dots and then some colouring in. Today we are looking through the square window......All well and good using waxoyl and stuff but not good when you weld again soon! Fire!!!!
As a rule of thumb, about 10lt/20cf a minute of gas, and when putting that vactan rust treatment on, don't put it on clean rust free metal, it doesn't adhere properly, it works by converting the rust, if there's no rust, it just creates a flakey coating. I learnt this after welding an inner wheel arch on my own car a few years back, put some of that vactan stuff on, the next day I was brushing some thick underseal on, and the areas on new metal, it just pulled off the vactan as I brushed it, so avoid putting on new metal it'll fall off and rust again far quicker than normal paint. Your fit up on the door step section was quit tidy.
Hi Martin I am like yourself mate a DiY welder I heard you say about disconnecting the battery, I used to disconnect the alternator also, as I once had one go bad after doing welding. So I always pull the plug on them now. Just thought I would say as they are not cheep to replace. Better safe than sorry eh, keep up the good work mate your doing great all the best Bert.
Great video Martin. That is a great job of welding, looks really good and solid. Plenty of good tips and advice for someone just starting out welding. Cheers, Jeff.
Cheers martin ya sod after watch your vids on welding I thought I'd give it a bash on my old transit I've just bought and hopeing to turn it in to a camper van I'd put some pics of my welding but it won't let me lol even my missus likes watching you 🤔 keep up the good work from the northern lad
Most important part of my welding is a grinder and plenty of stone chip or underseal. Covers a whole lot of sins lol And I wrote that before you did it lol
Great video and the sill looks nice and sound!. I've welded outside before and it's a real pain!, yours came out very well. Good tip on the seam sealer to finish the welds. I have a fair bit of welding to do on a long wheelbase 2004 Transit and will be laid on the floor same as you, living the dream!.
seems you got air you be better finally using the professional underseal gun and cartridges. covers much thicker and neater and cheaper . product I use for sealing in seams is marine and engineering pu40 by everbuild, similar to tigerseal but £4 a tube and comes in white black and grey, super useful stuff . Rusty car repair is a right struggle even for well experienced welder/fabricator . practise is the key and this tranny giving you plenty of that . If that clarke welder packs up look into an inverter mig as replacement, will be huge plus for body repair work, you be amazed how easier it would make it . Hope weather holds off for a while, stay safe and have fun ...
Your determination to finish it is amazing. Most would have given up and scrapped it. Why do that if you could learn how to weld and if it's still mechanically sound?
What I would suggest when welding outside use a big piece of plywood as a windbreak , cut down a half inch brush to spread sealer evenly keeps fingers clean as that stuff stains , for MOT work I would lap panels on quicker and easyer , not that I did many MOT repairs , I was asked the other week by a mechanic to do his MOT welding , polite no LOL .
Hi martin loved the video on the transit it is compulsive viewing. The only problem is i can't wait for the next one , i could watch this for hours i find it very interesting and very informative . many thanks
Great work! You have the same welder as me, and I also quickly upgraded from the tiny bottles lol. Think my settings are 2, MIN and 6 wire speed. I find them good but I’m also using pub gas which can effect penetration. Welds look good though mate, will fly through the MOT. Panels all line up nice too 👍🏻 I feel your pain on your back underneath it too, it is horrible! Boot floor on mine was a killer! Looking forward to seeing more
There is a far superior product to Waxoyl called Dinitrol Cavity wax. It doesn’t go hard, crack and trap water like waxoyl does. It comes in rattle cans and has a cavity lance.
Brilliant job. The old tiger seal is a few pound. Sure last time I bought it, it was £17 a tube or am I a tube buying it for that price lol. Looking forward to the next few videos.
Hi ya love all the vids mate very informative and gives me the confidence to do all the rust on my mk6 xl wheelbase now can you please let me know where to buy the van panels from Mary thanks and look forward to the next vid
Martin could you do a video please of welding with and without gas. Just want to see the difference in strength and how it looks. don't have the funds currently to run with gas
kas m Hi try on some scrap if you haven’t got any gas . When I did my apprenticeship years ago we were told you would get weak and porous welds if you run low or out of co2 , it shields the weld preventing oxidation. That was continuous seam and stitch welding on Various gauge metals , you might be alright with a few spot welds but I would use gas if you want a proper job . All the best
Hi mart, great vid. I've got to do the sills on my mk6. And also the chase rail underneath, small patches. What thickness did you use on the rails in the early vids?
If you do a patch Martin like you say you do like dot dot but if you need a full length sill do you still do like dot dot Ur has it got to be seem weld and how does that work if it can worp the matel mines got cpl patches already think this mot will need a full sill for mot
Neat job Martin. Not sure about sealing the weld on the outer sill though. Wont that affect the filler? Admire your determination and resourcefulness, nothing seems to slow you down Jack
Cracking job done there! I like the way you tell us that you're not a welder but turn out work like that and yet I've heard people say they are a qualified welder and knock out welding that looks like pigeon shit! I'm a fully coded Lloyds registered welder I do alot of big full pen 100mm thick x-ray welds, and I wudnt of done this job much different, only so much u can do with a rusty transit, its never ending i have a mk6 transit to, and I think you done a good job seeing your a beginner and learning so top job Martin 👌👍

Cheers Toney.
well done martin..vehicle welding is a pain in the arse...i always keep a wet cloth handy in case of fire..just dab it on
Nice job Martin, take no notice of the haters. I've seen so called garage welding and its a bit like garage mechanics, hit & miss. Keep on doing what you do, solid job mate.
Hi. Can u repair mine, its not as bad its 2007. Where about are u located
😂😂😂 love you explaining the way a health and safety guy would do it ... But you do it old school style .... Good lad

Great vids , so helpful
I do have a welder and ford connect outer inner sills gone , now have the confidence to give it proper go 👍👍.
Top job! It's encouraged me to dust off my old mig and get back welding again. ☺️👍
Great job of repairing that sill, and boy a nice inspection pit would go a long way to make your efforts less strenuous. Thank you for another great watch video Sir 👍 Tam.
I used to work for the company that made your regulator and gauges on your welder. It’s possible that I could have made your one back in the day!
Nice to see u got mig out and done a bit more on van Burt superb
HI martin what a good video i am working my way through your transit welding repairs job well done keep up the good work your a great ambassador for the home mechanic
Thanks bud.
Great work Martin ... I wish you would use a kneeling pad ! Take it from me 20yrs of kneeling on commercial kitchen floors and mine are knackered!!!!
your welding is similar to mine . it's kept my discovery 200 tdi on the road.
What the defender boys recommend for chassis is dintrol, instead of wax oil. Good idea that with the tiger seal, I know its a right pain to get off the old fingers!
Haha your not wrong there lol
It's looking good Martin. Can't wait to see her all done😁

Great work that Martin certainly get a good few more years life back on the road and great video as always.
Looking good Martin you are getting their good job
Great job Martin. Keep her lit. Really enjoyed your quick tutorial on the Clarke 135te turbo as I’ve bought the same👍🏻

POR-15 is good stuff to hold the rust back, not cheap but its good stuff. Nice video
Yes, I used it on the other side

Use to use weld through primer between panels before plug welding on the old classic cars Martin seems to hold back the rust
Nice job Martin great video brings back a few memories for me .
Great video Martin. That is a great job of welding, looks really good and solid. Plenty of good tips and advice for someone just starting out welding.

Yes Tom its a pain but we do struggle on lol
pure argon is better
TheCitroenman1 totally agree, but pub gas costs me nothing 😉👍🏻
Solid job. Getting there now
Getting there buddy. Looking great. Shared to Mr Butler👍
There is a far superior product to Waxoyl called Dinitrol Cavity wax. It doesn’t go hard, crack and trap water like waxoyl does. It comes in rattle cans and has a cavity lance.
to much gas flow will pull air in and not shield the weld
Brilliant job.

Sure last time I bought it, it was £17 a tube or am I a tube buying it for that price lol.
Looking forward to the next few videos.
It was £7.00 Billy.

Another Great video Martin
Do you have a seam bender for small panels or pieces? It would be very handy about now. Good work.
No I don't Jim, yes it would be very handy, May invest in something one day.
Nice one Martin.
Tiger seal...brilliant stuff!...bet your fingers still black tho, it seems to stain the skin to the bone!!
run the wire feed at 5 and loosen the spool a bit more and spray the wire with wd40 0.8 is the better wire for body work
Getting there mate. Feel your pain. ;)
Haha, I know you've been there Austin lol
Transit Rust Part 3500 and counting. 😊
Nice job pal 👍🏻
Well done! very informative and useful. Are you going to treat the whole of the underneath or just what is required for mot?
I want to treat the whole lot.
Will you be filming the whole of the underneath?
Maybe when I get round to it.
Hi mart, great vid. I've got to do the sills on my mk6. And also the chase rail underneath, small patches. What thickness did you use on the rails in the early vids?
I think it was about 16 gauge 1.29mm
Love this , please someone in the UK send him some knee pads,
If you do a patch Martin like you say you do like dot dot but if you need a full length sill do you still do like dot dot Ur has it got to be seem weld and how does that work if it can worp the matel mines got cpl patches already think this mot will need a full sill for mot
Yes, on sheet metal that is thin, You do the dot dot method and keep piggy backing the welds till they all form a complete run of welds.
@@retrorestore thanks Martin and is that ok to pass a mot .
Yes bud.
14:33 I had to mute the sound and open the Benny Hill theme in another tab.
Where did you get your welding trolley from please Martin
Ebay Mart.
Cheers Martin I'll look for one now
Why dont you tig weld the seam in stages ?
I don't have a tig welder.
hi this welding is no better or worse than that which you would get in your local garage just cheaper bob
Neat job Martin.
Not sure about sealing the weld on the outer sill though. Wont that affect the filler?
Admire your determination and resourcefulness, nothing seems to slow you down
Jack
No, it will be fine.
Were did u get the under body spary from martin
At a local garage Dan.
hi good video contents bob
Good
these transits were so bad that they are already rusted out. they look amazing and are great to drive though.
