  • I was returning home from a day out with my daughter and we had already caught a train near Orange Grove, MS. We decided to take the long way home that followed the CSX main across south Mobile County and caught a surprise. As the train finally cleared another train parked on the passing siding, we were treated to an unexpected sight. A Schnabel car, 20 axle carrying what appears to be a transformer.
We filed at at the St Elmo siding and then caught it again at the Irvington crossing. Definitely a highlight of our day.

    Child: Daddy, what IS that?
Father: It's a piñata, son. It's stuffed full of candy!

A caboose wow, I thought those things phased out back in the 1980s when the FREDs took over.

They are used for specific jobs, most are closed off and used for long shoves. In this case, it's used for the crew that operates the car. At least that's my understanding.

@@softerimage Mammoet, KRL, and other heavy haul companies do indeed use them to house the on-board personnel that accompany such loads.

Would I be guessing correctly that the hopper in between the engine and the schnabel is some type weight buffer because the engine plus the schnabel together would be too much weight for a bridge.

TheRantingCabby , I'm not sure really. I know they use what I've heard being called idler cars, not sure what functions they have.

The idler car, in the case of a Schnabel movement, supplies additional braking power to deal with the extra momemtum of the payload. Same purpose as the hoppers that accompanied Big Boy 4014 as it was moved from CA to the UP shops.
