That is a 20 axle schnable moving a transformer that likely weighs about 350 tons. The Hopper car is used as a buffer car. The transformer has impact recorders on it to measure impacts thus limited to 25 mph. That is a dedicated train which is required for a loaded schnable car. Dedicated train costs are about $125 per mile - figure that one with a trip from New Orleans to Huron, MI! I buy and sell transformers and are involved with many of these type moves. Own a 12 axle schnable. Nice footage!
Mark Haas, Where are those large transformers built ,and or rebuilt? I'm guessing overseas and brought to New Orleans in ships. If so it would seem that putting it on a ship going up the St. Lawrence seaway right to Port Huron would have been a better idea.
Glad you passed through our neck of the woods! Thanks for the comment. I'm sure it was an interesting trip indeed. Gotta love that Indiana weather, sunshine in Evansville & snow at Vincennes. :)
With all the photos being taken, I'm surprised they didn't catch me on the rear vestibule. ' Course it was kind of cold. We lost heat overnight in the caboose before reaching Flint, MI and change the LP bottles out about 3am at a crew change. Eight days on the road and bordered between "Adventure" and "Ordeal". You guys be safe out there. Jim
The first time I had to 0 0 I am going to the next couple days after the first time I have to be able to get a chance to see the difference between the ages and I am going to the right place to be able to make a difference between a lot more trains ,
Actually, seeing that it was an SD50, I cannot hear it's turbocharger whine, so it must have been dead-in-tow at the time. Most likely it is just there in case there is an issue with the lead locomotive.
We've run the Schnabel cars before with one engine; not sure if the trail unit was ever powered up during the trip. CSX MAY have run it as insurance to avoid a delivery time penalty in the event the lead unit became disabled.

Weather wise that did not look like a fun day to be rail fanning!
But, any day watching trains is always a good day!
Sweet. The snowstorm adds to the excitement 👍🏻👍🏻
A Schnabel car how cool! Great video!
That was cool. I just bought an HO scale Schnabel car yesterday.

wooooooooowwww.....
That schnabel car isn’t as impressive as some others. But still interesting!
That was some car, wonder what that was.
20-axle Schnabel car; the grey part in between both ends was a substation transformer for a power company.
Where's the high load?
Would have been nice if you had followed the caboose through at 1:30 so we could have read the details on the car side. Just commenting.
Uauuu 👍🛤️🚂😍
i dont see a need for loco #2
