Good call on building up your neighbor connections! It’s your first line of defense when living remotely. A genuine Portuguese friend will go out of his way to make sure you’re doing good. They will feed you and take care of you in a way you’ve never experienced 😂
@@noniluscious13 There are good and bad people everywhere. They are here in the US and I’m sure where you live as well so what’s your point exactly? While you’re here, check what Americans Drew & Britney did for victims of hurricane Ian in Florida.
Drew truly is a McGyver! I love watching how he troubleshoots and finds solutions and doesn't give up! Things are falling into place and your land already looks amazing.
I think it is great you guys are using the locals. Their knowledge will also make things go faster and will save you time. Buying a machine would cost four times the labor.
In case you didn't already know, the flower at minute 13:00 is a passion fruit flower. When it turns into fruit, it is soooo delicious. Also, if I had to guess about the fruit at 14:00, I would say it looks like quince. It is so wonderful to see the progress and discoveries at your property. It is such a delightful paradise/haven.
I think you are right about the quince, I was going to say apple, but quince is more likely. And I was also going to point out the passionflower, but you beat me to it!
I think you should totally add some sand or rocks to the lagoon so you can make it swimmable. You definitely won't use it to swim in if it's a muddy bottom.
I wanted to comment the same thing... line the whole bottom of the pool with all those perfect rocks laying around the land... it would make the pool appear crystal clear.
That lagoon, may also be safety from a forest fire in the fuure! Many rural people have been able to survive through fires by getting into their tanques.. Seeing all of the wood in your ceilings in the water mill, you need to have nothing combustible near it´s exterior walls, no wooden windows, and do not make the mistake of storing quantities of firewood near the mill in the summer. That lagoon is a great idea! Abraço de Loulé.
Nelson is a great ally for you and your renovation programme. His skills with the excavator are important, of course, but his assessments of your property and ideas for improvement are extremely valuable. Someday you may decide to get your own excavator to implement longer-term projects, but for now, Nelson is pointing the way towards "quick hits" and getting things done, and you are helping the local economy by hiring him for his valuable services.
Five terraces? That will be enough for export someday, lol, or at least a full cellar filled with canned provisions and delicacies to help you survive what's coming.
Watch the surrounding area ( after that rain ) where you took out the trees and see what the soil does. That way you can follow the natural way the rainwater takes down the hill above the mill. Maybe plant something to hold the soil in place or put up a retaining wall 😊 love what you’re doing to the place 😎
Yeah, I thought about that when they were taking down all the trees that they explained to be holding a lot of water. When I moved into my house 20+ years ago, I had close to 30 Popular trees (very tall, water filled trees that tend to break high up instead of uprooting during storms). Unfortunately, there are springs on my property and a creek in back of the house. I’ve spent 20 years fighting erosion, which didn’t seem to be a problem until I had the trees cut.
I’m so bummed, your episodes go by so quickly! They are that good, it’s like discovering Paradise on your property! Honestly can say, can’t wait to see what next week brings! Awesome! Awesome! 👏💕
I imagine you might place more reinforcement walls around certain areas to avoid erosion. I think that's why there are several terraces....Such a beautiful land area. I know it will be even more amazing as time passes.
Use the submersible pump. No priming and higher pressure. The other pump requires backfilling all the way from the pump to the pond and you’ll need a foot valve to have the water stay in the hose.
I am so amazed at the energy and dedication you two have. I know you are both on a mission. I love your drive and enthusiasm. You are also so positive and blessed.
A few days ago, I stumbled upon your TH-cam channel, and because I enjoy understanding the reactions of people from other nationalities who visit Portugal, I became interested and have been following with great interest. My interest is related to the way you approach the whole process and your relationship with the local community. I found it nice when in one of the videos, you mentioned preferring not to buy a tractor but rather support the local community. I was also very impressed with the situation of the storm in Florida, how it affected your family and the rest of the community, and how you reacted and raised funds that could help some people. This shows a lot of empathy on your part towards others. We Portuguese are not a very communicative people, partly due to our history (the Inquisition, which between 1536 and 1821 killed and tortured many Portuguese), but we are a people who enjoy receiving and helping, especially when we notice that foreigners make an effort to communicate with us and don't act superior as if they were the owners of everything. My comment has become quite lengthy, but once again, you are very empathetic, friendly, and humane.
Oh man, when the rains came, you could just feel the land going ..."aaaahhhh...."! And the previous owner had such goodwill toward you, leaving all these nifty contraptions. Wonderful
I’m so glad the mainland got the much needed rain it needed! ❤ It gets so scary with all the fires. Wonderful that you guys now have a great water source. It looks fantastic!
I love seeing the progress you guys are making each week. You see a little more and a little more. That's nice you have neighbors that come up with good ideas. That Pond is Ingenious. Always look forward to your content each week thank you so much for sharing it with us. Please stay healthy stay safe until the next time.
Great video. Can I suggest you consider building a second lagoon below the first. There was a lot of run off and this would easily fill a second lagoon or weir. Run a small solar fountain to stop mosquitos breeding. Good luck with your endeavours.
The pond will attract a lot of wildlife, which will likely "seed" your pond with fish eggs. The submersible pump is spectacular. And I love Drew's mechanical sense. That's a talent.
ohh the sound of rain,,, we haven't had rain for six months or so where I am in Mexico... there is something special about the first rain of the season
Congrats on the rain storm! The buckets inside your watermill must have been in overflow. I just worry about droughts, so I see the rain as a good thing. Also, I'd cultivate some friendships with a few cats - enough to keep the mice away. Yes, I agree Nelson has grown up on the land, knows the land, & is a good alley until you've had a chance to have a more intimate relationship with the land. But, still, you've accomplished a lot in a short time. It's truly an adventure on the road to paradise. Fun, as usual.
In the future, one of those terraces could be a nice small caravan camper park for summer monts (good income for you also) i definetly park there some days to meet you, and to be with nature! possibilities...possibilities 🙂
Hi you two, I was watching a utube video from Gemma Wheeler. She's an architect from the UK. On her site she shows unusual buildings that she has redesigned to work with the space. She was asking for people to send in their layouts to see what she might suggest. You could just see what ideas she may have about the mill? Good luck.
The fruiting tree could be a Quince...makes excellent jelly (as in the traditional sense of using a jelly bag and sugar) which goes really well with cheese and apples/pears
I am so totally in agreement with you using Nelson for this type of work. You are building relationships and using their expertise which will take longer for you to learn. Also in addition to maintaining the equipment and the related cost people don’t think about the type of insurance you need for using such equipment! In the United States we recently had a horrible accident of one of my favorite Marvel Entertainment actors who was using equipment for snow removal and the equipment landed on him breaking almost every bone in his body. He had great insurance but his recovery has been brutal! For sure your projects will move more quickly with Nelson and I think you will be much happier with the results!!!!
Don't forget to plant the fruit trees now! The biggest mistake we made as we built our house was planting the trees and greenery quite a few years late and now we have to wait for everything to grow. :(
How exciting to have water on ur property, great progress on clearing the land & seeing the possibilities at ur new home. I’m so happy for you both. 🫶🏼😃
The pond is beautiful! I'm loving seeing the evolution of your little slice of Portuguese paradise, it's so lovely, I'm so happy for you guys that you got it 🥰
I am late to your channel and loving it. We are farmers in South Carolina. Owning your own excavator isn’t idea. As you said, maintains, learning to repair it ad the time that it will sit in the way isn’t worth it. We rent one once per year to keep our cattle crossings cleared and other chores. One week and we are done and we have over 30,000 acres we work, five separate herds of beef cattle, corn for the live stock, wheat, rye, soybeans, list is long. Also keep taking time off to re-energize. Land owning and farming is exhausting. You guys are doing it the right way and your way. Great job. Keep up the great work and posting your progress.
Never too late! Appreciate your comment a lot and sharing your thoughts on the excavator. We are so grateful to have Nelson around who really knows how to use the machine and shape our land. 😁
I agree let Nelson do the very heavy work on your property ! Your building a tremendous sense of community having him doing that work! Having build our own home owning large equipment is very costly and can be dangerous! Just love you TH-cam channel ! You are one of my three fav couples I love watching. Hugs from Northern California 🍷🇺🇸
Will you consider giving your pond some stone walls just to stop soil sliding into it. And some plants to hold the soil too. You have been blessed by finding such a beautiful piece of land to call home. God bless you both richly in all you do. 🙏🌻🐈🇬🇧
Great video. Love the land! Also a quick heads up Drew, when you sharpen a metal blade, it's essential to make sure it's balanced. It's easy to do. As you get the edge you need, hang it on a nail through the center hole. It should balance out level. If one side is lower, take a little bit material off until it's level when on the nail. Think like balancing a scale. This way it keeps from damaging bearings and drive shafts. Good luck!
I was so going to suggest building a overflow pond!!!!! The good thing is that you can make it large if you need too, it always good to have a number of these types of ponds, even if your stream never dries out!!! Here’s a few other tips for you… With the fire hose rather then having to pack it away each time, run a slightly large pipe “solid or flexible” the feed the hose through that. This will protect the hose from accidents and sun damage, after doing this you can also create additional ponds on the next terrace with the pumps kicking in as the levels drop. Last tip would be to create dykes/water ways along the terrace or to run soaker lines so that they get watered automatically, all these things can be automated to work On their own with the pumps and easily run via solar panel…..
Thanks for sharing your property with us. Each episode it looks more and more beautiful! If you have little rodent problems you can get a live catch trap so it’s easier to get them relocated 👍🏼
You might want to consider installing something under your spillway in the dry season to prevent it from washing out the entire dam when it’s rainy season and the water runs alot faster…then all the work on the lagoon is not lost
Had to laugh when you said you didn’t want a mouse in your house. The abandoned mill is technically his house. Lol agree that move in your home is not cool. Thanks for relocating him.
Incredible progress & the pond is amazing! Drew you are patient handyman & Britt you have the imagination…..the property is looking beautiful ❤️🌞🤗🇦🇺🍻🐸🐁🕊️

Love the watermill and property. It takes a lot of water to irrigate, don't think your stream has enough water. You two are amazing❤
Would drip irrigation be an alternative? Negev desert.

Make a stick with a hook at one end to pull down high branches for fruit picking!
Good idea 👍
Love the new pond . Beautiful land growing 😊
It's amazing watching Nelson use that excavator with such competence. That is definitely a skill that grows with many years of experience.
How will you treat that water to keep it sanitized since its not a regular pool. Will it draw more critters to it?
Love your night cam! And your energy and connection and love just oozes out of the video and into my heart! Thank you ❤
😍😍
How peaceful it is on your property! I think the fruit might be quinces. Great for making jam with.
You might think about putting a liner in the pond, maybe.
Ola nice video your place looks amazing. I loved the idea working with the local people you doing a wonderful job. Beijinhos ate Domingo😊

So nice to see the massive progress. Just love the pond
the flower on the vlog is a passion fruit plant the one with the pritty flower
Thank you 😍

🎶 such pure unfiltered joy and “in the momentness” 🥰
Awesome, I hope to buy my own land someday in Portugal 🇵🇹 ❤
So excited for the new vlog! 💕💕
Truly amazing. Love seeing the progress being made ❤ The lagoon looks so refreshing.
The "apple" are quince, here in Italy we call theme Mele Cotogne. There some good recipes to do!!
After the winter floods, if the pool remains, would be nice to line the bottom with coarse sand.
Put a pond liner in the pond and aeration in it and the water will clear up!
I have just come across your video about getting the keys to your new property and I liked it so much I subscribed and have seen the videos since that one. Really enjoying your journey.
