You are right about the Portuguese helpfulness. Once at Armaçao de Pêra Saturday market , my wife tasted a cake sample and asked the lady who was selling the cakes for the recipe. The lady started writing it in Portuguese. We do not speak Portuguese, and the lady did not speak either French or English, so with her hands, she told us to wait while she went to find someone who could translate the recipe for the cakes she was selling! This is generosity!

I admire your generation so much that you've figured this stuff out, At 75 its kind of beyond me. But you guys are amazing. I"m following about 6 of you couples restoring houses, mostly in Italy.Sunday, post day, is the highlight of my week. I've seen some wonderful stories. Makes me want to come visit, even for an hour, just to check in with you. carry on I can't wait to see more.
I build and do projects myself and have tried to do a u tube but I hated the results. you guys make it look so easy and I know for a fact it isn't.
I too follow Sara and Luca. You guys need to have a child. Their little girl is stealing the show.

Those architectural renderings are awesome! Especially the outdoor patio. I know it’s not easy, but it seems like you appreciate and understand your unique circumstances! Glad you are friends with the other Italian TH-cam couple. I watch them every once in awhile too. Worlds colliding!

Would you lose the wall around the house in order to set up the patio? If you live closer to people, I would suggest keeping the wall, but as you seem to have your own little nirvana, you don't need the super privacy.

My grandparents were from the Azores and emigrated to the US and they both learned English but when they didn't want the grandchildren to know what they were talking about, they would speak Portuguese. Even though I can't speak Portuguese, I know when someone is speaking it. I guess I can hear the cadence, etc that I still remember when they were talking. Wish I could have learned the language but when your father is first generation Irish, the house is not bilingual even though my mother spoke Portuguese. I wish I could visit their islands. Kathleen

Drew, love that you are dropping in your Portuguese when you can. That is awesome. I tend to do that too... but it's good for the brain and learning. I have to agree... this is your home. I think you should think carefully about opening it up to strangers. If you want to BnB or rent it out, get a pet sitter when you need it... you might want to ask them not to share their location on SM. Oh, and Drew so true about the hundreds of festas... you can't beat them... so why not join them if they are in your village or town. There are co-working spaces even in small towns... and the numbers are growing.

I worked on a project at the airport in Mumbai, India a few years ago, so I was there for extended visits and I tried to visit all of the city, there is still an area on the beach that is a long established Portugueses fishing village. It was much different from the local Indian neighborhoods, with their wooden fishing boats pulled up on the sandy beach. This just popped into my head from you mentioning that the Portuguese being explorers and travelers.

We live in Spain and obviously you get to meet a lot of people, but some just turn up on your door step without asking and its very unsettling, we wouldnt dream of just showing up to someones home without being invited first, so yes think long and hard with who you tell where your home is😉 Love Rose xx

That way they have a safe spot to sleep and update online and they don't have to bother you two while building the mill.

I am sure the result is going to be amazing. But I would not have gone for a large rocket stove in the middle of a room. I would not have chosen a rocket stove, period. They usually don't look very nice, and they make that roaring rocket sound whenever you use it. And you can't heat a building on tiny sticks. They burn up in the matter of a few minutes. You need a wood stove that can take logs, for example up to 50 cm long logs. And preferably a wood stove that you can cook on and heat water on too, dual use.

We absolutely love your channel! It is fantastic to see the younger generation taking interest in restoring the "Old World ways of life" Congratulations on moving forward with the build. This is very exciting for you both and taking us along with your journey. Some of the Channels we watch are all in Portugal as well and are older and younger folks that have allot in common and wisdom. Cindy Vine Portugal" "The Quinta" TheNewbys" and in Italy "LeAw Leave Everything and Wander" We can not wait to see what you have in store for us. XOXO

I feel so jealous of you two. I would love to live in Portugal, but my wife does not want to. I have Portuguese cousins in Lisbon. I am getting old now at 73.
