Had this mk7 for 5 years, stage 1’d after the 4th year. Actually an unbelievable daily driver, still have it around as a second car, can’t go wrong with it
Had mine 5 years now mapped it last year really wish id done it befoe absolutely brilliant car never tire of driving it and this is my 3rd golf and 5th vw by far the best of them all. You should definitely drive a mapped gtd. Great review
I considered this, and ended up with a mk7.5 Golf R. I always used E5 fuel and mix of Race and Normal mode as a daily, and was getting a solid 30mpg. When I was dropping it off to sell it. I drove in eco mode from Scotland to Derby and got 47 mpg. Now because of the interest rate rises, I can't even get a bog standard A3 for the price I was paying for a Golf R lol
Had as a company car for about 18 months 18 reg mk 7.5 (digi dash is a great feature on these). The only comp car I really didn't want to give back (had an 17 plate a1 petrol that was also great fun, 17 plate a4 diesel that was nice inside but a bit meh, and a 67 plate Q3 which got the most attention from the opposite sex but was boring drive and dated infotainment). Awesome daily car, effortless switch round town and motorway runs. Best bit is bursting arrogant bm and audi drivers who aren't expecting you to beat them off a red light. If you put your foot down while in 2nd it really does feel quick.. Miss this and back in the market for one, haven't had the same feeling in any car since letting it go..
I’m the same. I have test drove a few cars, I was thinking either a Leon FR or GTD… test drove both and the gtd was just nothing like anything else I’ve driven. It was mental. I’ve been in faster cars and they still don’t feel as fast I don’t understand it. Don’t know if this one was modified, but it was such a fun drive
Nearly bought one about 3 months ago. 17 reg, 15k miles. Garage never answered any calls so couldn’t go and see it or book a test drive. So then got in contact with a garage with a manual 17 reg bmw 220d m sport, which has every option minis pro nav, also on 15k miles. So happy I went rwd, just makes the slightly boring diesel engine more enjoyable than my dads 7.5 golf gtd. not sure if I should have gone auto now though but I’m happy with what I’ve bought and I think I would have been happy if I had the golf too. But the bmw definitely feels higher quality than the golf and doesn’t have issues like knackered water pumps at 40k mile, leaking boots that turn the spare wheel well into a pond etc
Got mk7 gtd with racing line sunframe kit, polybush front control arms and wheel alignment from Area51 motorsport and the car feels almost 4WD. PS5's all round. Very little wheel spin. I should do a video on it tbh. 😂
I've got a golf sv 2 litre diesel 150 remapped to 200bhp. Enough power for overtaking but wouldn't call it a performance car. Saying that a gtd would be a lot more fun to drive than my car. I get around 50-60mpg on a decent run
They're not direct rivals but this or a 320d/420d?? I think the bmw is more fun. Golf probably slightly quicker down a back road but a bit boring screeching around roundabouts where the bmw goes a bit sideways!!
Focus is quite a bit more fun but the golf is an extremely good daily driver. Both the gtd and diesel focus st are fairly similar in terms of pace though.
@@ParagonCarsLondon I still can’t shift the VAG is superior mentality I really do think the market has shifted and other manufacturers are really upping the interior quality. I Think a Stage 1 tune on a GTD would unlock a lot more potential from its 4 Pot
@@ParagonCarsLondon interesting. I have a GTD stage 1 and have raced the ST fiesta stage 1 and they usually nudge ahead based on weight. So can't work out how this is standard but quicker? Have you actually checked it's not a flashed ECU?
Did you mean 280lbs of torque? I'm sure you said 380. Sorry ignore what I said. I heard wrong. You said 380 newton metres, I was thinking of pound feet of torque, which is 280.
The GTD is cool in its own right, but I don’t understand the point. I have an MK7 GTI with a simple $500 tune that makes 321hp and 351 lbs./ft of torque and I’m averaging 34 mpg US (41 mpg UK) and I typically have a blast to well over 100 mph on many drives. Mechanical LSD and Golf R brakes too. It’s the perfect performance to fuel economy balance. With the GTD, all you get is economy and forgettable performance. You gotta love diesel’s over everything else I guess.
Agreed, I think some in the UK are willing to have the GTD for the little extra mpg, but you can't beat the the sound of petrol GTI exhaust note and dsg changes and like you say a quick remap and you making some real good power figures
Gtd engines can last for up to 250k miles. With regular maintenance. No golf gti is touching that. These engines are bullet proof. A guy in the caddy scene I know has a gtd lump in with 200k miles on the clock. It’s a 6 year old engine.my one has 137k miles on. Tsfi engines aren’t built to do the long driving a diesel 2.0 is.

How was it with reliability??
@@IAmWillMcLovin definitely do it, just need good tyres otherwise will wheelspin like mad, not expensive to remap these

The handling of the GTD is excellent
I've had a MK5 TDI for nearly ten years - DSG, 17" Sienas, paddle shifts, and Michelin PS5 makes it unreal fun!
Ive got a mk7 gtd best car I've ever owned not the fastest but by far the best all round car

I've got a mk7 tdi and fair enough my driving is a bit on the spirited side but 55mpg is an impressive figure for it

Best tyres on this car are the Michelin Pilot sport 4s. The Michelen pilot 5s have not been so good. Use proper oil and good fuel.
Owned one for a year! Needed a litre of oil every 700 miles! Ha Had it mapped to 230hp! Still love that car! Shouldn’t have sold it!
They’re all the same 184s my Leon does it
Did it pull well with a map?
@@jasonjay7650 yeah some difference on power! Not much on fuel! Well worth getting it done!

Probably the only diesel I'd own

The 220d is actually one of my favourite cars. Check out our review of an auto one here th-cam.com/video/jeqzMZWAuAo/w-d-xo.html
Rarely notice a RWD car when driving normally, Only really shows when driving hard. Both cars are just as fun in their own ways.
Good Pov, how do your strap the cam to your head?
Just a go pro head mount

I found the diesel A4 was much more refined than the GTD in insulating that diesel sound

What would be the fuel efficiency around 130-140 km/h (80-87 mph)?
i haven't tested it at that speed but from the 70mph results i'm gonna say it'll get around 45mpg at 80-87mph
Thats good MPG I guess if I drove my 1.6 TDI A3 more sensibly I would see those figures
This or ford focus st diesel?
Great review mate 👌
How would this compare as a fun daily against a mk3 focus ST how punchy and enjoyable are the two compared

Great video!! Out of curiosity is this dsg a 6 speed or 7?
just 6-speed dq250 in this car
Eco mode in my 7.5 with DSG is rubbish, I hate it almost as much as I hate the stop/start but apart from that its a fantastic car
