Japanese graphite pencils are graded differently than the ones in the west. As a rule of thumb they are usually about 2 grades softer than the corresponding grade in the west. So for example a 2B Japanese pencil would be the same as a 4B western pencil. You can see this very well in your swatch when comparing Tombow to the other brands. :)

I've not used the Tombow pencils, but being softer and darker, I'm now wondering if they might not erase quite so easily, depending on the paper used. They might be suited to a different paper than what might be preferred otherwise. To be fair I'm only guessing having never used them.

@@stevejones1682 Different types of paper will always have influence on both erasibility and darkness regardless of pencil brand. Rough paper with more "tooth" will make the pencils look darker and increase potential smudging, since more lead is transferred to the paper. The opposite is true for smooth paper. So depending on the paper used you should consider what pencil grade would be suited best. More important for erasibility is the type of eraser you are using and not pressing too hard with your pencil. That said, in my experience Tombow pencils erase very well and conincidentally Tombow also makes the best erasers. My personal favorite however is Staedtler, they have the perfect balance between darkness, smoothness, erasibility and smudge resistance and affordability. Another great, or possible the best, japanese brand is Mitsubishi. Their pencils are top shelf, but also quite pricey outside of Japan.

@@frontallappen4981In a way you have confirmed my thoughts regarding the paper.. However I can't agree about pencil brands being regardless, as the binder will have an inflence and that isn't the same from one brand to another. As seen here, reviews usually test erasability when comparing brands. I tend to stick with Daler Rowney Bristol board Airbrush and Cass Art Heavy Duty Cartridge. I was really thinking that might not be suitable for the Tombow as they are softer. I agree with you about the Tombow erasers. Electric erasers are also good. Incidentally, until recently I used a Polychromos black for very dark tones in graphite drawings.

Staedtler are good for beginners or hobbists, Faber Castell are just average. Derwent are for enthusiasts and professional like the Tombow Mono that in this selection are surely the best for the amazing graphite and the woods. By the way, the pencils reviewed here are just the cheapest solution. For artists and professionals I recommend the Mitsubishi Hi-Uni and the Tombow Mono 100. The best pencils in the world without any kind of doubt. If you will try them, you will easily forget all the others.

I have Fiber Castell some that are not use up, and Stabilo usually from 3H to 8B, both very good. I use mostly 3B, 6B and 8 B and HB. Those are gone the fastest. I do like to mix with pastels too, black and white. Start with 3B always just to have soft but not too soft sketch where everything goes, I do use light hand when drawing tho.

The case where smudging can be annoying is on notebooks you keep in your pockets, especially ring bound or with soft covers, the pages slightly grinds one another quickly resulting with blurred notes or sketches.

For those saying that all pencils are the same: With all the respect, you're 100% wrong.
There is a huge difference among pencils both in how they perform, how their tones graduate, how they look, precision and many more. With all the respect, people who can't tell the difference, can't have an opinion. It's like saying, that a cheap Fiat, is the same as a 4x4 Mercedes and a Ferrari in the same time. Even on 2mm leads, there is a huge difference even on their thickness. For example, the best 2mm lead holder, comes with the worst quality graphite lead, and none 2mm from any maker, fits the tip of that lead holder properly, so any lead, wobbles. Since those pencils are all about precision, I've found that only if someone harvests a lead from a Faber Castell 9000 wooden pencil, can have a properly functioning Rotring Rapid Pro 2mm lead holder. Actually, it becomes the most precise pencil I've ever used and I'm not a fun of Rotring at all. Not to mention, the quality of that lead, that needs sharpening very rare, doesn't break etc etc. There are big differences. even a grip and more than that the balance on a pencil matters a LOT on how it will perform/draw/precision etc..
PS List's with the best pencils for any use:
Best Drawing: Pentel Gpraphgear 500 with Ain Stein leads-Wooden: F C 9000 - Lead Holders: Faber Castell TK 9400
Best Writing/EDC: Pentel Kerry - Wooden Pencil Staedtler Mars L.
Best Sketching: Kohinoor 5347 (They also make THE best, Red Chalk - Wooden Mitsubishi Hi Uni
Best water soluble graphite: Faber Castell Graphite Aquarelle
Best "Black" pencils: Faber Castell Pitt Graphite Matt
    Honorable mentions (monochrome sketching)
    Best Charcoal: Generals
Best Oil pencils for sketching: Conte Pierre Noir/ Kohinoor Gioconda (Red Chalk,Dark Sepia)

I also don’t use a large variety. 2H, maybe 4H occasionally, HB, 2B, and a 4B. Occasionally I might use something softer if I’m having trouble getting dark enough? Not often though. I also use mechanical pencils a lot. I’m so disorganized, lol.

For years, the only brand I would use was the Derwent, but now use Faber Castell 9000 and Matt and Caran d Ache. I don't get where Derwent are coming from as they only come in various sets and not as open stock. I used to get replacements from a shop that would break open the sets but that has now gone. Some online retailers might be doing the same but I prefer to shop locally and support shops to remain open. The grading stystem isn't a standard but varies from company to company. Faber Castell tends to be lighter than the Derwent. Faber Castell now has a 14B, in the Matt series, which if Derwent had the equivalent shade would be around a 12B.

I have what I call the fantastic 4 of graphite. I've owned 12, yes 12 lines of graphite and tried 14. Here are the fantastic 4: In mo particular order. As no surprise Faber Castell 9000 are on the list and are easily accessible, staedtler also easily accessible, tombow mono 100 which are not as easily accessible, then almost unheard of and the most expensive but very hard to find, Mitsubishi hi uni. There us a correlation though. 2 are German and 2 are from Japan. There is a difference but it's not as apparent by far as say colored pencils. As a side note oil based charcoal or hybrid graphite like Faber Castell Pitt matte graphite are a myst for deep dark values

    • @blakearius
      @blakearius ปีที่แล้ว +2

I wouldn't say the Mitsubishi ones are unheard of.. They are literally a staple in basically every japanese animators/artists toolkit and are generally considered one of the best graphite pencils. It's just the fact, that they are made in Japan so they are naturally more expensive for us living in the west. Tombow has a greater presence and production in Europe, which is one of the reasons why they are not as expensive/easier accesible as the Mitsubishi.

      Graphite is Graphite.
It's either Graphite or it's not.
The different BINDING AGENT is what you're buying.
The shape of the pencil ✏️ determines the line type.
Hexagonal performs totally different to triangle.
You have been REJECTING grading of the Graphite.
You have to smear on a thick layer of binder material to get the percentage of Graphite onto the paper.
If you fail to smear on a thick layer of pencil lead, your Graphite Drawing FAILS TO MAKE THE GRADE.
You didn't put down enough graphite for it to be considered HB or 4H or 6B.
You actually have to put down graphite to get a graphite drawing.
If you draw lightly, you put binding agent onto the paper which contains a tiny amount of graphite.
You must train yourself to Reach The Grade.
Then you must smear the lead firmly and consistently.
You're not just putting graphite onto paper.
You're also applying a preservation substance to stick onto the graphite and the paper.
You AREN'T in charge of the shading.
The artist WASN'T GIVEN THE JOB OF APPLYING THE SHADING.
You SELECT THE GRADED pencil and you apply a firm , consistently thick layer of lead and eventually you'll see the manufacturers did their job in mixing the materials.
You're NOT ALLOWED to smear a delegate or fine amount of lead.
You AGREED TO GO WITH PROFESSIONAL GRADING STANDARDS.
That implies that you're going to apply the substance up to the industry standards.
You're NOT ABLE TO apply 2B lightly to get 2H grading.
The graphite percentage will fall below the Grade.
You'll only be applying 20% of the required amount of graphite for 2H.

  • @Gma7788
    @Gma7788 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

You agreed to GO ALONG WITH THE CONCEPT OF PROFESSIONAL GRADING OF THE MATERIALS.
YOU are NOT ALLOWED TO smear graded lead, lightly or too aggressively.
The graphite content must be applied in a THICK and consistent layer to reach the correct percentage of graphite content to reach the grade.
Graphite is a fine dust and it won't stick to paper.
Graphite dust gets sifted into grades of fineness.
Its mixed with a binding agent and they grade the percentage of graphite to binding agent.
A light drawing will NOT HAVE ENOUGH preservative binding agent applied to protect the graphite dust for multiple decades.

  • @jamesaritchie1
    @jamesaritchie1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

If you want cheap quality pencils, buy Chinese. I love all the brands you tested her. Faber Castell is my favorite for no good reason. But one thing China does as well as anyone is make good pencils. Pencils are still used extensively in China, and they even have standards for many types of pencils. Pencils have to be of a certain softness, and a certain quality to be used for things like exams of all types, forms, and other things. They have an every day use 2B pencil that is used at university and other places that is every bit as good as any of the brands in your video. It costs a few cents.
There are bad, gritty pencils out there that have cheap wood that won't cut properly with a sharpener, and wiith lead that breaks constantly. But you can almost also spot these pencils. They comes in packs that may cost a dollar fro ten of them, they are usually wildly decorated, and are aimed at small children. They are often made in a country you had no clue exported anything.
But the truth is that most pencils are very good, and this includes cheap pencils from China. This will sound like blasphemy to many, but I've tested several brands of cheap Chinese pencils against all the pencils you have except Tombow, and I actually find the Chinese pencils as good as any of them. In fact, the 6B and softer Chinese pencils were progressively darker than the big name brands, and because of were much less shiny because less pressure and layering was needed to get an acceptable black.
The plain truth is that there's more snobbery with pencils than in any other area of art. There are many, many excellent pencils out there, and there is no need at all to pay an outrageous price to get extremely good graphite pencils. Beginners especially get caught in the "bigger is better, more expensive is better" trap in several areas, and it's sad.
Here's another absolute truth. Want to know what the best brand of pencil in the world is? It's the brand you enjoy using. I own two sets of Derwent pencils, one set of Faber-Castell, and a billion random pencils from numerous brands. I seldom use them. I have several sets of cheap Chinese pencils, and I reach for them almost every time.
The funny thing is that many professional artist use mechanical pencils, and while they may argue over which pencil is the best, I almost never hear an argument about which lead to use. ILike many pros, I use Pentel pencils, pprimarily the cheap P200 pencils. I use a thin slip on grip because precision and control is everything. I also use Pentel EIN/Stein lead because I can get it in several grades. Now and then, like one of my favorite pro artists, I switch to the Pentel Graph Gear 1000 pencils. I love all the Graph Gear pencils. including the Graphlet. One pro artist I love call the P200 pencil the "light Saber" of mechanical pencils. He was right.
The point is that everyone argues about the quality of woodcase pencils, but not about the graphite that goes into mechanical pencils. I think this says a lot. If a pencil sharpens well, and you should turn the sharpener, not the pencil, and if you enjoy using it, and get results you like, then don't listen to anyone who says you need something else.

That's not necessarily a good thing. I need feedback when drawing.

@@navigator1372 DRY! That is exactly how I would describe the staedtler pencils. I liked them when I was younger but as I have gotten older and improved my skills, it's become more obvious to me that I don't get much depth in my drawings with them.

Interesting, I find the Faber Castell pencils the hardest and with more feedback of all of the top brands.

Ya and you are sharpening them wrong. Turn the sharpener, not the pencil.

Going from a single brand that’s worked well for you to 7 different brands for no apparent reason indicates that you have a problem with the way you think. Go see a doctor

Graphite is much more controlable. No need for fixatives.
