  • This past weekend the annual Fullerton Railroad Days event took place at the Fullerton train station. Vendors, model trains exhibitors, and real life trains were all on display and even open for tours. The main attraction unquestionably, was the 90 year old Santa Fe 3751 Steam Locomotive. Built in 1927 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, 3751 was the first Northern type steam locomotive for the Santa Fe Railway. Now run and restored by the San Bernardino Rail Historical Society, the steam engine sees the mainline usually once a year.
In addition to 3751, BNSF provided a brand new GE ES44C4 locomotive #5542 for tours. Amtrak also provided a Pacific Parlour Car, and a Superliner Business Class car for tours in addition to their GE P40DC #822 Heritage III locomotive.
Featured in this years video, are the sights and sounds along the display tracks and mainline, as the crews get prepared for the move back to Downtown LA. Various trains also are thrown in, as well as the coupling procedures. Weather was fairly good, but some heavy rain did show up before the move which didn't cause a delay thankfully.
The BNSF 5542 coupled up to the 3751 right after Amtrak #4 passed, and then the whole consist backed up along the Fullerton siding track. Once past Fullerton Junction, the train passed the switch and proceeded onto the BNSF San Bernardino Subdivision.
At exactly 7:30 PM, 3751 and its consist blasted past Fullerton, heading back to the Redondo Junction Amtrak yard where she will await her next mighty time ruling the rails. Turn up your volume for this - it's not every day you can hear, see, and even taste a 90 year old steam locomotive running on a mainline!
MANY thanks go out to everyone who made this trip and mini "excursion" possible including BNSF, SBRHS, Amtrak, and the SCRPA who host the railroad days every year.

Amtrak Superliner Business Class Car #34512

It'll be a while before she runs again. Her crew told me she's going down for her 15 year inspection this year.

I didn't know 3751 had to go down for it's 15 year rebuilt I had just found that out it's going to be out of services for 3 to 4 years (I feel like that'll be a long time) but when it comes back I hope it could make another trip to the grand canyon railway again with 4960 and 29 (after watching footage from the nrhs convention in 2002 and the Arizona centennial celebration in 2012) although it feels different without engine 18 at the grand canyon railway anymore but 29 seems like a good replacement

The bnsf engine was using its dynamic brakes giving 3751 something to work against.

Anyone know why 3751 operates with a BNSF diesel up front?

Jordan Michael - mostly insurance cost. It’s very expensive to have a steamer lead.

but you can hear the locomotive chuffing? and chuffing equals the throttle is open? the diesel in front is mainly for insurance
