    Great video! I have always held the lead line in my mouth, but since BP carpet bombed the Gulf with oil dispersants, I have tried to change to over the shoulder style. Your explanation is the best I have seen.
    I have learned a couple of other techniques too. I find that to throw farther, I increase the back swing, so that the foreword swing is longer and stronger, giving the net more foreword flight.
    But as the fish are often close to a dock or pier pilings, throwing farther is not always throwing better. In a boat, farther yes, you get into the dense schools.
    Also for beginners, I point out that shirt buttons and watches are often snatched by the net, sometimes resulting in their loss, or at least a bad throw.
    I assume most of the comments are about bait nets, which are more lightly hung and smaller mesh than mullet nets. I build my mullet nets with 1 1/4 inch bar mesh so that anything that gills is eating size. Mullet nets are also hung heavier, and as I throw wading, I use short brails so I can unload the net into a shoulder hung sack.
    If these two learned gentlemen really want to have a contest, they should throw wading in 3 or 4 feet of water. There aren't many fish on the lawns here in North Florida. But I am sure they would do well, wherever they cast.

    Here on the Texas coast we generally throw a much smaller net for finger mullet. These little mullet are fast and smart. They run in smaller schools as well....maybe 20 per school. You have to target cast to catch them and be able to throw a long distance as they are spooky and can see you and the boat 50 foot away. In fact I call them 50 foot mullet. My rope is 40 foot long on a 5 ft. cast net. Most cast are almost always that far.

    Thanks for the tips. Any techniques are helpful in various conditions, example choking up to throw in waist deep water. I was just curious if you ever heard of a technique I learned. 12 foot net throw, with one hand. Pointless and tiring yes, but cool to watch.

    I seem to even throw a 7 foot cast net better using this over the shoulder triple load method. Still practicing with a 10 foot 1.5 lb per foot Tim Wade net. It’s a heavy net for sure and this method is the only chance I have of throwing it right.

    I grew up wading with an 8-foot net. I now have a 9-foot net for wading and a 12 and a 10 footer for bridges and piers. My standard throw has always been the "in-the-mouth" style. I throw well with the standard style but it seems more tiring than the triple load since you only have to bear two thirds of the weight in your hands.Question: in the over-shoulder portion of the net, do you separate the outside lead line and inside lead line, with inside on the inside of the left arm and the outside lead line on the outside of the left arm? Looks like you put the inside piece on top of your left-hand bundle. I would like to change to this method but the trailing (inside left) of the spreaded circle does not open. Any suggextions?

    • @wd0456
      @wd0456 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Struggled with same thing. Watch very closely at 1:25-1:30. He puts inside line almost up to his neck and leaves outside line hanging. Also puts part of inside line in left hand. Did not notice until I watched this on TV hard to see on small phone or tablet screen. Seems to open every time now. Sometimes better than others gets better with time though.

    If you are a small or young kid and want to throw a 10 foot or larger or heavy net without making your back sore or wearing your arm out from holding most of the weight in one hand and without using your teeth or getting your upper body soaked, my video shows a great method. I bought a heavy weighted 10 foot net for my small 13 year old son and using the method in the video I uploaded, he mastered it in about 5 minutes and now throws like a champ.

    Not using teeth is good, but having wet shoulders is only slightly better.

    • @RikkiTikkiTavi290
      @RikkiTikkiTavi290 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +paul johnson the shoulder technique also saves your arms from getting as tired and allows you to throw the net more consistently by removing the manual timing of letting go with your left hand. It is a little harder to get big distance for the same reason though.

  • @normb28
    @normb28 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    he did not explain after he threw 1/3 of the net over left shoulder and then before he grabbed the other 1/3 of the net with his right hand ... he held a small section of the net in his left thumb to help hold it open before he grabbed the 1/3 of the net in his right hand

    • @RikkiTikkiTavi290
      @RikkiTikkiTavi290 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      normb28 Yea i saw that. I have since switched to Scott's method for throwing. Much less weight in the arms makes you less tired. Hard to throw a big net correctly after a bunch of throws when the arms feel like jelly.

    I have thrown a cast net all my life. Usually a 6 footer. I have moved up to a 12 footer. All the videos usually look good but they don't teach properly. This video is great BUT. You do have to go under your arm with the first part over your shoulder. Second you have to take the lead line from under your arm pit and put it over your left thumb. When you separate the lead line after that you do leave it in your thumb and put it in your hand. That's what makes this technique work. Just have to watch slowly.
