President accuses Supreme Court of judicial cannibalism

President Ranil Wickremesinghe accused the Supreme Court of “judicial cannibalism” following its determination on the Gender Equality Bill.
The President told Parliament that the Supreme Court cannot rule on a Bill but can only advise Parliament on the value of the Bill.

While the executive's decisions are of course open to judicial review, the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty means the courts cannot overturn an Act of Parliament; therefore Parliament, as a supreme legislator, cannot be controlled by the judiciary.
