Hi Otto! Thank you for your review! I have a quick question. I recently purchased the Osmo Pocket 3 for an upcoming cruise in the Caribbean and plan to use it cautiously while walking along the various beaches I will be visiting. I don’t intend to shoot any videos underwater, just panoramic shots while at the water’s edge or on a catamaran. Given this, would you recommend adding a DJI Action 5 to my equipment for a beach and boat environment - I’m on the fence?
I prefer the Pocket 3, so I’d only get the Action 5 if you feel that you need the camera to be waterproof at some point, maybe evaluate how often that’s going to be
Just get waterproof case for pocket 3 in case you ever stay too close to water. No need to buy another expensive gadget if you're not going to do rough action stuffs that needs action camera ruggedness
This is the first action camera Ive bought since the Hero 3. Im really excited to use it for our trip to Japan in a few weeks. Coming from always recording with a mirrorless and nice lenses Ive had to adjust to the image quality difference but its size and stabalization makes it drastically more convienent. Its pretty amazing how much it does for its size. Im also looking forward to the supposed firmware update adressing bitrate, though I dont think people understand the difference that H265 makes with bitrate needed for quality footage. It does need to be addressed though.
Please compare the low light ability of this Action 5 to a Pocket 3 My friend has a Action 4 and the low light is not that good. The quality difference in daytime is not a big deal but low light is!
Pocket 3 will beat the Action 5 for sure. The low light on this one is better than on the Action 4 but the size of the sensor will be a limitation. I have 2 more videos coming out very soon!
No need to do that. Pocket 3 has 2 stops advantage in low light performance due to bigger sensor (1-stop) and f2 aperture (1-stop). Action camera aren't meant for low light without external light. For that, just get different tool. Human cannot beat law of physics especially light.
Hello I am noticing that on all videos done by all youtubers the clouds have no definition and are like one big cloud Why is this happening when on action 4 the clouds looks nicer , or it can be arranged in post ? Thanks
I can not wait till a company comes out with a directors view for an action camera. I would love to be able to record myself and what I am looking at on one device. That's when I'll upgrade.
I've got the osmo action 3 when riding my motorbike over 1000miles with the 3 and I love it. I have several episodes on my channel. I'm still thinking why I should upgrade to 5pro
I returned my DJI Neo drone for this action Cam..its a better buy than getting another toy grade Neo drone..last action cam i bought was the hero8😂 , my portable camera’s are complete… insta X4/ Dji Pocket 3/ Action 5 pro..plus the mini 4 pro and Avata 2 all fits in my small hiking backpack..👍
Super night mode sounds good, but let´s be honest: in low light this cam (like all other actions cams) is loosing all the details. Look at the stairs at 06:30.... Also the pictures wobbles with every step because the stabilizer still needs bright daylight to have a reasonable performance.
Yeah that’s right. Action cameras are not meant to be used in low light (yet) so they try to come up with all these ideas which are not bad but they are obviously not perfect. I appreciate your straightforward and realistic comment, most people lately seem to be trolls or GoPro fanboys lol
I’m having a difficult time choosing between this and the Go3S. I want to film mall videos and walking tours in the evenings and at dusk, as well as document family stuff. I have a pocket 3, but want a smaller and more rugged camera with good low light and good image quality that comes close in look to my pocket 3. Any thoughts?
Go3s in low light will not perform very well. Btw you posted a link on a comment and that went to the spam folder. I know that you can raise the shutter speed and crank the iso up, but I think we did talk about it for another camera, regular users don’t know how to play with exposure, this is not a pro camera but more for regular consumers, and also the problem of doing that is that the video quality degrades, they just can’t tolerate those settings while having good quality. Jitters are annoying and look bad, of course but low light high noise is also bad. The super night mode helps, it’s not perfect but ….
Can you please confirm both screens show live display simultaneously *while recording video* at 4k120 (and if not, at 4k60)? This was a limitation on the action 4 and I cannot find if this was fixed.
@@OttoJulian_ Thanks! By the way, does the horizon bakance (up to 45 degree tilts, not the 360) work well on 4K60 or does it wobble a bit for several seconds until it stabilizes at the beginning of each video?
The Action 4 provides better image quality in normal daylight conditions than action 5. It appears that DJI may have rushed the release of the Action 5, prioritizing battery life and resolving overheating issues at the expense of essential camera features.
Not so sure about that. But shot several video clips side by side for a new video comparing these 2 cameras but I can’t see that the Action 4 has better image quality.
@@OttoJulian_ Respect your opinion but several videos I saw on TH-cam showing that action 4 is slightly better Any way I m dji fan and I would like to upgrade to action 5
I really haven’t watched anything for the action 5 as I didn’t want to get biased. I’m selling my Action 4 after doing multiple tests, maybe this doesn’t mean anything but I am a big pain in the butt when it comes to video quality and how good or bad the footage looks like. I’m staying with the 5, not using the 4 in the meantime
I heard that the new action 5 pro switch to the qualcomn chip for a longer duration, I think DJI needs more time tuning the video for a total new platform.
I see that Ace Pro lacks 10BIT color and D-Log. Hmm. Yet, I thought the image looks more vivid. Now I’m not so sure. Can’t really judge until you have the camera and you get to test it yourself.
10bit in DJI isn't that good, not recorded in 4:2:2 format , you can see the the artifact in this video. There's artifact compression is due to it being 4:2:0, the same as 8-bit recording, and even worse, action 5 records in lower bitrate than action 4 (it's gonna be fixed in next firmware update) so you get full compression in action 5
Hmmm. Sky doesn't look too good. Audio cuts out using the DJI Mic 2's. And no action footage, it's an action cam, need to see footage that pushes it to see if the low bit rate is an issue..
About action, sorry I don’t agree. Lots of people resort to these kind of cameras for vlogging or general everyday videos of their kids, travel etc. I’ve been a fan of early GoPros along with a big DSLR back in the time. Ask me how much action did I use those cameras for
@@OttoJulian_ what's not to agree or not to. It's a known concern of the low bitrate, which really only can be explored with faster action, more detailed scenes where it needs to process more information quickly. That's why I mentioned that. The Pocket 3 aimed more for vlogging had higher bitrate for h265 codec, but the Osmo Action 5 pro which is geared towards action is almost half that . Also low light footage would be great to see how that performs.
I think the PRO comes down to the new dynamic range that this camera has, which is not easily found on these cameras, but yeah, sometimes it feels like the new features are being the new standard.
Hi Otto, as usual very helpful analysis. it helped me to decide to buy my new action camera. I've been thinking to buy Insta 360 Ace pro nut now I'm changing my idea and perhaps I will buy DJI action 5 pro. Do you have any recommendation. about it for me? Thanks a lot in advance
Hey Vincent. It’s a very good camera, I’m waiting to see if they are going to do something about the bitrate which seems to be lower than what they advertised. I’m currently testing against the GoPro 13, but so far I wouldn’t see myself choosing it over the Action 5. You can’t beat the price either for what you get, also easy to use and practical. I’ve had so many things happening with the GoPro when changing settings that it becomes frustrating. Ace Pro is a good contender but I didn’t bring it to test it out, but might soon depending if Insta360 is going to release something new or now
As an action camera it’s not a great review, how does the camera preform in action sports and not just vlogging, how does the camera handle going from bright sun into a dark wooded area, does stabilisation work going from brightness into dark on something like a mountain bike
I see your point, but not everyone does action sports, and all those questions can be answered without doing them, it's a camera and it behaves like one, not a sport accessory
(of course, plenty of reviews that will suit your own personal needs, my views are a bit different since I emphasize in the camera qualities but that doesn't make this a "non great review")
@@philwebb606 You are not missing anything, it's just a different perspective and other people that don't do mountain biking do care more about camera performance in other scenarios, my sister only cares about underwater performance since she is a swimmer in open waters and could care less if she found a review based on biking. Not being a review useful for you doesn't mean it's not useful for others, and this is not my opinion, it's a life fact.
@@OttoJulian_ your reviewing an action camera , so your sister does underwater swimming which is an action sport, did you cover that? Na you didn’t you reviewed a high spec camera by walking around, why even bother
@@OttoJulian_ It looks like this will be fixed with the next update. The bitrate is too low. Also the image is overly sharped. So I set the texture (sharpness) to -2 and the noise reduction to -1.
@@OttoJulian_Insta 360 Ace Pro. I watched some comparisons and I thought insta looks better because it had more color. Also more features. Like the ability to pause the video and resume later. Or to delete a video while you’re recording g and not have to stop the recording, go to library and delete from there.
After every DJI release I wait 6 months to review anything. All of the products are beta firmwares and customers are the testers. Pro term comes from the very high dynamic range. And people are brainwashed with sensor size. It is pixel size that matter and tech inside and outside or the sensor. Not the total calculated area.
Sure, the thing is I can do reviews early and then later on, not just waiting for 6 months when most people would have already made a decision of buying it :)
@@OttoJulian_ Af there was missing I in the sentence. I mean I do my inspection always later because I know they fix and add a lot of things in the first months :) Sorry for misunderstanding :) Seriously phones automatic corrections.. Had to edit this too 4 times.
Brainwashed with sensor size?? Same size with action 4 and insta360 ace pro since a year ago. Also have you ever heard pixel binning technology which been out since years ago. 40MPbecomes 10MP which is the same as action 4 10MP for 4K recording. This update is about refining the kinks in action4. This isn't Fujifilm where they managed to downgrade the AF performance with every firmware update
You seem like a nice guy and I see you have a popular channel but I have to ask you is every reviewer for this camera in the pocket of DJI. No mention of the picture ruining 60 Mb per second low quality bit rate more than half of the DJI 4 action 4 and GoPro. If you happen to stumble across an honest reviewer, they’ll tell you about the artifacts and compression we want a better picture not a worse one how could you do a review like this and have it all be positive and not mention the negative. The major negative so I won’t be subscribing because you’re in too good of a mood, and in the pocket of DJI. If you look up the popular CIneD review, they put it on the table.
Sorry man. Everything that I said is my own opinion after testing it out, DJI had no say in this video and I actually bought my own camera when it came out. Also, the bitrate is not half of the Action 4, I have to double check again but I remember for the same shots they were the same or in some cases slightly lower but footage looks better in the Action 5 and that’s what matters at least to me. I could care less if it’s being done by AI or an alien technology. Looks better? I’ll take it. So thanks for not subscribing!
@@OttoJulian_ Did DJI give you a camera? I know the specs. If you shoot at 30P which is the most popular frame rate it's 60mbps. I know that. Like you I'm an action camera expert. GO pro and Action 4 shoot at 130 MBPS. I talked to DJI and they said an update in about 2 weeks will help l alot in the bit rate dept.If not mine is going back. How a reviewer could ignore this elephant in the room in my opinion is not a real review. You knew about but said nothing, I don't trust youtuber reviews anymore especially when it's a DJI product which I am a huge huge fan of. Anyhow sorry for the tude it just makes me mad. @sutv6754 read my last comment again I bought my own camera. What is there not to understand. I don’t shoot 30fps and like I said, footage looks good to me and I’m pretty obsessed with that, otherwise I’d be making my videos with an iPhone or a GoPro like most people do instead of a mirrorless camera with a good lens.
I honestly don't mean this personally, but what you're saying...could have come directly from DJI. Just like the hate directed at GoPro. But you show it yourself, the result of the Action5 looks worse than that of the Action4. Faces look muddy and the image often looks foggy or cloudy. It's a disgrace that an action cam with a bitrate of 60 will be launched on the market in 2024. Which camera delivers the highest bitrate, the most color range? Ahhhh Hero13😉🤣
@@OttoJulian_ You don't really want to tell me that you don't notice all the details that are brightened up and not shown in such detail on the Action5 🤣 Seriously....
Are you assuming that I used all default settings? I don’t gain anything by saying that this is better or not than the Action 4. By the way, I’ve shown the footage of the A4 vs A5 and not a single person said that faces look “muddy”. On the contrary the comment I get is A4 looks so dark and less appealing. Where did you see foggy images? Hero 13 better? lol. Yesterday it stopped charging because it was overheating (just charging). I got that recorded. Such an amazing camera huh. Ace Pro is a good contender but I didn’t bring it to test it out, but might soon depending if Insta360 is going to release something new or now
@@OttoJulian_ Thank you Otto🤞
As an action camera it’s not a great review, how does the camera preform in action sports and not just vlogging, how does the camera handle going from bright sun into a dark wooded area, does stabilisation work going from brightness into dark on something like a mountain bike
I see your point, but not everyone does action sports, and all those questions can be answered without doing them, it's a camera and it behaves like one, not a sport accessory
(of course, plenty of reviews that will suit your own personal needs, my views are a bit different since I emphasize in the camera qualities but that doesn't make this a "non great review")
@@OttoJulian_ maybe in your opinion, I’m looking reviews for action sports from an action sports camera like the action 5 am I missing something?
@@philwebb606 You are not missing anything, it's just a different perspective and other people that don't do mountain biking do care more about camera performance in other scenarios, my sister only cares about underwater performance since she is a swimmer in open waters and could care less if she found a review based on biking. Not being a review useful for you doesn't mean it's not useful for others, and this is not my opinion, it's a life fact.
@@OttoJulian_ your reviewing an action camera , so your sister does underwater swimming which is an action sport, did you cover that? Na you didn’t you reviewed a high spec camera by walking around, why even bother
i just bought action 4 nearly a year ago.. I am gonna skip this fellow for now, even though action 5 is really seducing...!!!
Yeah if you have the 4 you should be fine, it is a good camera in my opinion!
💯👍
Thanks for watching. !
It actually has less details than Action 4 when it comes to the sky. Look at the clouds.
Tradeoff, did you look at the shadows or how the face looks like? If I lower the whites or highlights the clouds will look better
@@OttoJulian_ It looks like this will be fixed with the next update. The bitrate is too low.
Also the image is overly sharped. So I set the texture (sharpness) to -2 and the noise reduction to -1.
Same thoughts, I do think that the DJI 4 is more accurate than the DJI 5
Wow alot of these comments are obvious bots, dji out in full force
@@DavidPotter85 bots? 😂😂😂 DJI can care less about my channel has to say about their products
The sky looks washed out. Especially compared to Insta 360.
Insta360 what
@@OttoJulian_Insta 360 Ace Pro.
I watched some comparisons and I thought insta looks better because it had more color. Also more features. Like the ability to pause the video and resume later. Or to delete a video while you’re recording g and not have to stop the recording, go to library and delete from there.
Subscribe👌👍
Thanks!!
Short Answer: No. The Image quality is really bad.
Ok

We count on you and that is a big let down.
@@sutv6754I took a look at your work tude dude, and decided not to subscribe to your channel. I think it's a bit premature of you to state "Like you I'm an action camera expert." Sorry, but you're no where near the scripting, shooting, and editing skill level of Otto. So, pipe down junior.
@randarmax thanks for the support!
Not sure how the Action 4 looks better than the 5, but opinions are good to have.
And yet here I am buying them all to put out content. Why don’t you make yourself a video review? That would be great
