    There’s some interesting information when it relates to heavy clothing and ammunition. In my junior year of college, I had a forensics class with the Deputy Director of the State Bureau of Investigation in my state. We looked at a shooting where a man wore several work coats and thick shirts in an officer-involved shooting. He was shot around 20 times with 180 grain .40 S&W Speer Gold Dot. The rounds penetrated about 2” and didn’t expand due to how clogged they had become with his clothing. He eventually was taken down with several .223 62-grain Hornady Tap rounds. He wasn’t high on drugs or under the influence of alcohol. It was a very interesting class experience!

      @@thegundungeon Yep...I figured it might. Lol. Surprised me that the HSTs failed. My best guess is that these all need a bit more velocity. Hence, the very good performance of the 180 Gold Dot 10mm. The fact that the 165 40 manifested an attempt would indicate that to be so. I carry a 40 EDC. 4.25" S&W or on occasion a 3.5" S&W. 165 Gold Dot at the moment. But I have used the Critical Defense 165. It performed great in all my crude media tests.

    Your results were exactly what I would have expected. Whenever I’ve seen people discuss changing ammunition in the winter, it’s usually to a full metal jacket load, as if conventional clothing of any sort was going to stop hollow points, and of course that’s silly. So why switch from hollow points due to heavier clothing? If bullets expand like your 10mm Gold Dot, then they expand; if they don’t for some reason, then the worst that can happen is that they act like FMJ-so why switch to FMJ to begin with? Good video; thanks.

  • @mulder4528
    @mulder4528 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Interesting for sure! My guess is the difference is the bullet design vs the caliber. You had a great range of velocity between the three pistols using the HST’s plus P fast 9mm through to the slow .45 regardless this didn’t let the HST redeem itself a bit. Though the bullet weight was different between the .40 and the 10mm, bullet diameter would of course be the same. I doubt there was much velocity difference between the lighter .40 and the heavier 10mm in the shorter barrels. Looks like Gold Dot is a winner for winter, sorry couldn’t help that. Have to admit I am surprised at the HST’s performance, Have to re-think carry loads now. Excellent test thank you for it, would be interesting to re-visit with all Gold Dots.

      Yeah I used a crappy block because all
      Of these have been tested in fresh blocks to see the wound tracks. This was more concerned with the penetration and expansion, not so much the wound track. I’ll link the video showing the performance of these regarding wound tracks

    You cheated! You did this on purpose!
    So if I got it right, despite HST being specifically designed to improve expansion without sacrificing penetration, none of the rounds were as effective through heavy clothing as they were through light clothing. Watching your test I didn’t like what I was seeing. Wanting a hollow point that does expand as desired through heavy winter clothing I did a little research and stumbled upon an old article at luckygunner that describes the results of tests they did. Various calibers of various manufacture fired through heavy clothing into ballistic gel. They even include detailed charts with pictures showing results. It was interesting to see how some bullets consistently expanded, expansion on some was inconsistent while others didn’t expand at all. I’m still confused. Most of their 10mm tests expanded nicely, but a couple didn’t expand at all. 9mm tests were all over the board. You tested 9mm 124 gr HST +P and it failed to expand. Maybe it’s by intent, but you didn’t mention the manufacturer. The chart I looked at showed Federal 9mm 124 gr HST +P expanding into a nice flower. I realize your tests and demonstrations are geared towards allowing the viewer to make their own conclusions and there are way more variables to be considered when making a decision on what round to carry. Hell, maybe it’s just the butterfly effect coming in to play as to what works and what doesn't. In the end, you’ve got me thinking and a little more research is in order.

      @thegundungeon I don't see a great advantage over 9mm or 40sw. You always lose something to get more.
      It's a smaller, weaker round than 9mm. Supposedly, less recoil, but several people say it's no discernable difference.
      It seems it's sold in the same size guns, so you're not getting better concealablility. You're picking up a couple of extra rounds. Like 17 is a massive advantage over 15. If you carry a spare mag and can't hit something in 30 rounds, you need special help.

      @@FoulPet I’m getting over 1300 fps with a 100gr xtp in 30 super carry, matching factory federal 9mm 124gr +p in terms of energy. That added with the extra capacity and the fact it consistently penetrates deeper than 9mm, is a great selling point for me. I’m one that doesn’t mind carrying handloads, so it’s all about what the round CAN do vs what it’s being sold as for me.

    • @FoulPet
      @FoulPet 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @thegundungeon underwood gets 1500 using a 124 grain with 357 sig.
      30sc is already at 50k pressures. If you're pushing that over its normal rating, you could push 357 or 40. More powder and bigger bullet is more power usually.. hand loading, you can tune just about anything to get better than factory.
      You're still turning a weaker round.

    • @thegundungeon
      @thegundungeon  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FoulPet the handload isn’t over max pressures, factory ammo is just always downloaded unless it’s someone like underwood. Agreed bigger bullets and more case capacity will always be more powerful, I just think the 30sc is a good balance between mag capacity and terminal ballistics as well as manageable recoil.
