there was originally a line where i yelled about it being illegal, but after doing more research, i believe it's more of an unofficial regulatory board type of thing. it's become the "standard" so to speak, but it's why things like genshin's soft pity system are still somewhat convoluted

Every mobile game, not just gachas, has a hotline for customer support. I had a friend Adam (name changed) and he worked for this big one, uhhh lets call it, Mandys Mush. You want to take a guess what 99% of Adam's day was? Taking calls from livid adults to find out that their child had gotten into the shop and used the already linked credit card to purchase hundreds of dollars of power ups and replays. (and in rare instances calls from young adults about how mom or dad had spent ACTUAL BILLS MONEY on the game.) And Mandys Mush was one of the first to deliver this model, so it wasnt even employing predatory tactics we know today. It literally would just be like "hey you're outta lives, you can buy more if you want or just take a break!" and STILL folks would spend enough to make it the highest grossing mobile game for years, practically putting mobile games into the marketplace in the first place.
So now tell me, when you have your customer support spending 99% of their shift telling adults (usually) that "We are not responsible for any financial transactions in game. All sales are final and refunds are not allowed unless you can prove the card stolen and used on an account not your own." and then fans of your genre saying its so frustrating to play it without spending money at all and wishing they could "just spend a few bucks" to feel like its WORTH playing, how on earth can people just shrug and be like "well if you spent money thats your own fault and you are scum"
That line of thinking feels like literal non-hyperbolic brainwashing, that's that same logic as how billion dollar companies hire third world outsourcing/immigrant labor at half the cost of minimum wages and folks will go "THOSE DAMN IMMIGRANTS TOOK JOBS FROM US!!!" like no you dumbass the company saw an easy way to make more money with less effort and loves that you wont even blame them for it.

Every time i mention anywhere in the mobile game sphere how predatory these companies are i get shut down by ppl saying "but that's just gatcha games, everyone does this". No . Just because something became the standard doesn't mean it's right and should be allowed to continue. If something is unfair, predatory and harmful to kids and their spending habits it should be stopped or heavily regulated.
The example u brought up is brilliant to be honest. Fast fashion is one industry where companies got away with so much exploitation and everyone was doing it, even luxury brands. Until it got exposed and people are slowly waking up to this.
I think the first step in the right direction would be for ppl to stop defending and start questioning and thinking my money is worth more than a quarter of a wish. I deserve to enjoy myself if i decide to spend my money instead of endless grind with small return.

    • @allanime01
      @allanime01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

@@orsikocs your comment made me realize another point: it's NOT "just gachas" like think about the other examples in yakkos video: cs go had skin trading and betting. Why? Cause it's a gacha system that's how you get what you want. Roblox I'm unsure how that works so I'll skip, but the BIGGEST offender is Overwatch. Loot boxes are given free pass cause "oh you can just grind for them!!!" But THEN there's events. If you don't grind hard enough and if the gods don't love you during this 2-3 week period you're SCREWED and don't get that special skin until next year! (Where there will also be NEW skins to chase!) So right there, a non-gacha with the most gacha shit ever.
So by gacha player logic, it's okay as long as there is even a small choice to not pay, which is stupid as shit. Hmmmm....I'm not as big a TH-camr as yakko but I'm thinking I need to write a script. "Gacha is infecting gaming, and some folks defend it???" Is my working title.

You see it’s both those things together that make it bad.
I’m a libertarian and even I have a problem with psychologically manipulative tactics in games.
You no longer are given the agency of free will or choice when the developers psychologically manipulate you into spending money.
If the stipulation to play is “have self control.” Then it needs to be regulated the same way as gambling and rated as such.
It’s why I don’t defend Gacha but will also not have a problem at all with Pay to Win; because unlike gambling you can make a rational cultural argument in favor of P2W.
Some gaming cultures value their time far more than their money, take Korea for example; whereas in America we value our money when it comes to games far more than our time.
We will grind for 20 hours just to avoid spending 5$.

That Genshin video was actually the wake up call I needed and lacked for almost a year of my playtime with that cursed game. Your experience in the gacha field and ability to see right through the manipulative design tactics really shows and it was just what I needed to hear to stop torturnig myself everyday with endless grinding of artifacts and mundane dailies and try some other games the world had in store for me.
Ever since then I got into Hollow Knight and TWEWY and I've had an absolute BLAST with them! I feel like I've forgotten that games are supposed to be fun, bring that sense of exploration and progress without constantly asking for your money and/or time in return.
I rewatch that video from time to time when i feel that same "demonic itch" to go back and give in to the gambling world, because whatever that game is doing to people like me is honestly kinda horryfing and shouldn't be excused nor normalized, and I'm grateful you brought these issues to light.

I won't quit since it's fun for me, but I totally understand why it's not for everyone and people need to get that! Genshin should be celebrated for it's gorgeous music, those serene moments when you've just climbed your first mountain in liyue or the characters that people can resonate with. At the same time, we need to be able to have to look at the media we consume critically. These videos have been beautifully constructed to provide that perspective :)

I just wish more hardcore people would just calm down and understand that a critique of YOUR favorite piece of media doesn't mean you have to go out on a limb and defend it. The biggest sin of this game is not the predatory gambling shit and not even the awful grind, it's that after you empty your parent's credit cards to get C6 of every character and R5 of every weapon, and after you spend months getting the perfect artifacts... you can't even use it for anything. There is no challenging and rewarding content that you can do regularly besides the abyss, which you can only do twice a month. The other 28 days you legit have 0 things to do. No goals and no obstacles, simply nothing but waiting for the next story update, and if you don't care about the story, well..
One would think that money-hungry company that relies on whales to survive would try to accommodate them, but they're either unwilling or incompetent to do it. So if you watch any stream or go to any TH-cam channel of a big spender, they will play the game for like 30 minutes and then spend 5 hours talking about the drama, watching news, "rating" viewers accounts, doing giveaways. In other words, anything but playing the game.

Genshin optimizing lurker here who would like to make a statement on the combat system.
From the outside it is a simple rock paper scissor system but it has way more depth than many other rpgs.
For example, all elements have an internal cooldown for application. See that big electric shield? Not all of your ice infused attacks will crack it. It will be on an internal 2.5 sec timer or a 3 hit timer. This timer differs for normal/charged/skill/burst damage.
Another example is the "heaviness" of each element or the Guage. Burst usually applies more of an element than normal attacks. Each character has thier own Guage that determines how you want to rotate skills.
How does this affect my gameplay? Lets say I play normally and spam a fire support with a water dps. But then the fire support applies weak fire while the water support applies strong water. All of a sudden, I'm amplifying the support fire damage instead of the water dps damage because the water is so strong that it stays applied even after I try to apply fire. Now I have to stay longer on my fire character or swap them out to a different character/build.
This is only the surface of the iceberg of the complex background mechanics at play. Feel free to visit keqingmains website as that is where all the knowledge is complied. You can easily see that this combat can be as deep as you want it to be.

On the subject of time in games, there’s more gambling systems than just the actual gambling system. The artifact system is genuinely ridiculous, and people will spend hours trying over and over and over for the best artifacts. You’re not gambling your money, you’re gambling your time. I play Genshin entirely free, in more ways than one. I play the parts of the game I enjoy, and I do not enjoy grinding for the best artifacts. There are people who will dedicate hours to finding the absolute best team comps and artifact builds, and I have to ask those people: Are you having fun? You didn’t spend money, but you spent hours of your time, and yeah, you can kill a boss in 12 seconds, but did you have fun anywhere in the process? I don’t build my characters, I don’t make a perfect team comp, I just use who and what I want because I want to. And there are people who take offense to that! My best friends tell me I play the game wrong because my shiny flower that I put on my unlucky Fire boy was 2% too low to be viable. I play the game by the principle of, if you hit something enough it will die, and I have fun. Isn’t fun why anyone plays games in the first place?

That is 14.400 Primogems to get the character you wanted on the Banner. The game does not give you that many. At that point YES you are REQUIRED to gamble.

To be honest, I used to love this game in the beginning (I started around when it launched) it was something new and also something I could play with my friends since they had it. I just had a blast wandering around Mondstat and ignoring the main quest to do whatever I wanted/could at the time (which also happened with Liyue oof), really just messing around with the characters I pulled with my free gems (I stayed F2P for literally ~months~ until a character I really wanted dropped). I settled into the routine of getting home, doing dailies, getting artifacts and materials, and whatever my friends wanted to do if CoOp was on the table. It was to the point where I played every day because, well, it was part of my routine now.
    ...then my account got hacked.
I lost all of my five star artifacts, regional materials, my better (almost fully ascended) weapons, and all of my level up books.
...needless to say that was my wakeup call by the fact of how I realized how much work it was gonna take to get all of it back...and I haven't played since.
(Doesn't mean I can't enjoy the characters and their stories though)

7:15 This point really hits home for me. I used to play Genshin daily since day 1 as a f2p player, and I made it a goal to 36 star the abyss. With diligent minmaxing, I managed to do it within 5-7 months. I felt happy at the first clear, but after playing for months afterwards, the monotony got to me. I would have to do some minigame or web event I did not like in order to build up my supply of primogems. The abyss also got relatively monotonous with most battles being a DPS check asking for rock-paper-scissors where rock may be strong during one phase of the abyss while scissors would be strong in another phase of the abyss. The exploration was neat at certain points, but sometimes, some new areas require some tedium or some arbitrary barrier.
The grinding can be fun. Like MMOs, Genshin is trying to make its grinding fun (or at the very least, addictive). And I probably would have kept playing the game if I was playing with friends (i.e. how MMOs work), and while I met some nice people in the limited social aspects of Genshin, I realize I would have more fun in my life giving up the Genshin grind. And to report, so far, so good.

I took a break from Genshin a couple months ago and have not once felt compelled to play it again for any reason other than to try out a new character or to help out my friends with an event. I've easily played for several hundred hours, and I can confidently say that the enjoyment I got out of the game was nowhere near enough to compensate for all the other shit I had to slog through. I still love the world and the characters, but at the end of the day, unless Hoyoverse listens to the community and makes Genshin an actual video game as opposed to an anime slot machine grindfest, I won't be returning any time soon.

Your video made a LOT of good points. And I agree with most, if not all of them. For me, though, it's precisely *why* I play Genshin. I can play it for 15 minutes a day and put it down, and I don't feel any urge to play it more, because there is no pressure for me to actually play and/or grind. I'm not super interested in the gacha and I don't really want every character, so maybe I'm different. There is no challenge that will stress me out or overwhelm (unlike League and most mechanically intensive games I've since stepped away from), which is exactly what I'm looking for. Recently re-found your videos, and I love your humility. You've earned a sub from me! :)

It's funny I've been playing Genshin consistently since it first came out over a year ago. And I agreed with every aspect of your video. Objectively Genshin isn't very good, but that doesn't matter because I still find it fun. It's the game I look forward to coming home to to play for like 30 minutes and then move on to something else. It's the one aspect of my life where I don't feel like a failure because it's both fun, and easy. The opposite is also true. If you surround yourself with people / look at posts that are more positive about the game, it can cause you to believe there's more people happy with the game than upset . We curate what we wanna see online . Damn near every social media platform is just a gathering place of numerous echo chambers.

6:22 The difference is that other gacha games are mobile games that you leave on auto play while doing something else. Genshin is the most time intensive gacha. To get my weekly saints quartz in FGO all I have to do is play a total of around 1 hour and log in every day for about 10 seconds. Genshin wants at least half an hour a day and a lot more to properly optimize.

Skullgirls Mobile recently updated their daily freebie system to be able to do like…5-6 tasks in a list to get all of your free daily rewards (including premium currency). Those tasks include stuff like…log in, open your daily relic, send a friend a gift, play a match in each of the game modes, etc. There’s also an auto-play feature that can pretty easily clear the daily events, and early streaks in the prize fights. I don’t ever feel like my time is wasted playing the game, and the events are monthly, so no FOMO if I can’t play. I have to say as a Chinese player I have seen mihoyo before they get big in the global market.
To make their fanbase toxic as hell is a trait of this company and many similar game developer. I have to guess it's something to do with how the Chinese online community likes it.
I liked zzz quite a lot but I have to say, if I have to choose a monetization model among f2p/p2w I actually prefer Korean games which the phycological tricks targets whales more(lots and lots of free gems but higher celling for whales). Rather than mihoyo games not only makes micro transactions much more rudimentary but also very time consuming.
