I get your process and all, but it feels kind of lame to review an entire season of something the day it comes out and not delve into each episode and then the series as a whole, I won't watch the video today and likely will forget to even come back to it once I finish the series. I understand the concept of content creation, but there is the Walmart way and then there is the Harrods way. Watching a series of videos that flesh out detail and insight for each episode is far more meaningful and interesting than a recap of the season and a quick snip of your review of it. My 2 cents for what it is worth.
The show isn't horror or drama, just animal abuse by poison, the only tragic thing to see here three episodes in. I guess if you're into seeing dead pets? ... this is disappointing....
I felt like jumping in the TV and bashing her head! Similar character was shown on Stephen king's The Mist where the Mrs Carmody start to brainwash people with her religious crap
That's beautiful! I loved all the doubling-up and symbolism in the story. Like how the cats are called strays, and John/Paul and everyone else stray at points during the story but can find their way back to 'god' if they try to make amends etc.
I loathed Bev and the only time she got told off wasn’t to my satisfaction. But when it came time to her death and she was clawing in the sand and crying, her unhappiness was fine with me. So sad though.
I’m glad Riley’s mom told her “you’re not a good person” but I agree, I wish that confrontation had been bigger and Bev had been told how wrong she has been her whole life. I think she really believed she was doing good so it was a shock for her to hear that she’s a bad person.
I really enjoyed this show for a lot of the same reasons people are mentioning. However as a Muslim from nyc, I particularly appreciated sheriff Hassan as a character and how realistic he felt. It’s not often Muslims are portrayed outside stereotypes so I’m incredibly grateful. That said watching Bev dig through the dirt to hide from the sun was 10/10 fitting for her 👌🏽
I know, right? I was afraid she would succeed and they would end it on a cliff hanger, with her and the Vampire surviving, which would have been bad writing. I loved everything about this series. Although, I wish her character would have had to suffer more. She was so awful. Also, like you, I loved the way they depicted the Sheriff.
She won't drink his "dirty" blood but will dig through dirt to survive. A fitting ending for an absolutely hateful character. And to think that we might all know a Bev or a Bev lite in our lives really speaks volumes for the times we live in.
I kind of feel like “I can’t feel my legs” is a hint the angel is dead. In all the mythology, if the “head” vampire dies, so does its brood. Since she wasn’t turned but had its blood, I feel the blood “died” when it did. I do feel the ambiguity of it all is brilliant.
The line Erin has to Sarah when they’re unlocking the gas to burn the boats - “we’re never gonna know if they made it, are we?” “Probably not.” “I’m deciding they did.” Feels very much like the author talking to us, the audience

Noticed that the deaths of Riley & Erin are portrayed in the way the opposite explained dying. With Riley seemingly forgiven and presumably (even if metaphorically) taken to afterlife by his victim and Erin laying on the ground, her body returning to the earth & the cosmos. Beautiful writing. Flanagan solidifies his standing as one of my favorite visual storytellers.
Also their perspectives of death while opposite ran parallel. Riley said we are nothing but matter, atoms and dead cells that the earth and universe feeds on. A VERY scientific (yet romantic) view of death. Erin's death she claims that we were created by the atoms and matter from the universe, and our lives never solely belonged to us, because we were formed by Gods infinite-giving universe. Our lives are only a result of the dying planets and cosmos and there was never such a thing a individual being in Gods universe. I never heard of Erin's philosophical perspective before. Very very moving.
@@crushingit5128 It''s actually close to the canonical catholic interpretation of the afterlife. Everyone likes to think of heaven as a place where people chill out as individuals. But if you were to ask the Pope, he'd probably confirm the literal meaning of returning to God, or becoming one with God, that's frequently mentioned in the bible. It's just that interpretation isn't terribly popular anymore. People like the idea of remaining who they are and just continuing more than becoming a part of something else entirely.

@@Storytime23144 Riley was the one on the rowboat who warned Erin about what was going to happen. Mike Flanagan said he left it open whether the vampire lived or not, but Leeza not feeling her legs anymore was a pretty good sign it died.
I feel like the scene with Riley’s parents near then end is so key. They said they didn’t have to feed, they were still in control. That feels like a necessary lens through which to view all of the chaos and violence. The frenzy in the church was still psychological and not strictly physical or uncontrollable. Choosing to add that dialogue really transforms the experience to me
I liked that take on it too, it's like Riley's parents have really been forgiven because they confronted their own issues like overcoming sin. On a personal level I get it when you overcome that feelings of guilt or spite or whatever it might be and decide to forgive/forgive yourself, those tendencies of sin becomes much more easy because you are in control of it now vs letting it control you. which just goes to show lots of the townspeople had unresolved issues they didnt want to confront or admit. Now its like that tendency for blood was symbolic for their control of their own vices whichever it might be.
It just gave them a reason to unleash their true evil desires. Be it vamprism here, or religion or MAGA or antivaxx or homophobia or misogyny out in the real world.
Something that took me a long time to pick up on was the Doctor telling her girlfriend about the priest always starring at her, which made her uncomfortable. She spend her whole life thinking the priest was judging her for her sexuality, when in reality it was just a father catching a glimpse of his daughter groing up.
the scene between Rileys parents at the end was so meaningful. Rileys Dad never forgave him for giving into his addiction and ruining everyones life. When Rileys dad tells his wife that the hunger doesnt change who you are, he is able to separate himself from the hunger, which he was NEVER able to do with Riley and his addiction (and what it caused). in that moment, i see that as Riley’s dad finally understanding his son and forgiving him. i also thought it was beautiful that Riley experienced death the way that Erin explained it (in regards to her baby) and Erin experienced death the way Riley had explained it. Soulmates. I will never forget the way I felt when Riley saw the girl he killed in the boat, whole & healed... and she took him to Heaven, truly forgiven. Perfection.

The Priest’s monologue at episode 3 is the best scene out of the whole series IMO. He tried to make sense of what happened to him for himself, talking alone in a confession booth without no one listening. So scary how someone could justify any bizzare events and acts through religion and it happens in real life too
See Midnight Mass is actually about the way how fanatic religious people lay out the texts of the Bible or any other holy book the way they want to. I’m religious myself and I hated the way the characters of the series interpreted the texts of the Bible just so they fit to the events they are experiencing. If you know the meaning of the texts, you can tell how far off they are when connecting the events to the texts. Flanagan actually showed this at the end when Pruitt realized how wrong the things they did were.
@@SuperMelrose1 Again, you have to compare the events of the series to what is written, for example, in the Book of Revelation. The context of the passages they were quoting in the series is important. I certainly don't know the exact meaning, I didn't really read the bible (only few parts).
The scariest idea of this series for me was the way they viewed the monster as an angel. Also, how the creature had human like intelligence, but never spoke and couldn't overcome it's instinct to feed.
Yes, I really liked that the creature never spoke, so that the priest put his own interpretation on the actions of the creature. I feel like that implied that many Biblical angel's actions were interpreted.
Outstanding show. The most memorable scene for me was probably Riley's sacrifice - simultaneously horrifying and an absolutely perfect way to redeem himself and try to save the woman he loved.
That was the most intense moments so much packed into what…probably 60 seconds? It ended and I just sighed the biggest sigh like I needed all the emotion to go with it.
I love the heavy implication (or rather juxtaposition) of the 'ark concept' towards the end as Beverly Keane preached about how she is leading the villagers into Noah's Ark that is the rec center.. while not too far away, Warren and Leeza are literally the only ones survived on a literal 'ark'.
No, Bev CERTAINLY killed Pike. You can see the bottom of her dress as she gives Pike the hotdog. It’s a very quick shot, about a minute long, but it’s there
I don’t even need facts to know that evil lady killed Pike. No one else on that island was even remotely capable of doing that but her (which, in a way, is fact). My poor Joe. I thought he was gonna turn his life in a good direction if not completely around.
Although Erin cutting the vampire's wings at the end was to mirror the story she told of her mother trying to cut a dove's wings, I thought it also was an incredible depiction of addiction and helped further redeem Riley as a character. The vampire was so consumed with her blood that even as she was cutting into him, he couldn't take himself away from it. I believe this speaks to how one can be so addicted that they don't notice the harm being done around them. Furthermore, when the vampire tried to look away (perhaps someone trying to end their addiction), Erin pulled him back (like a relapse). Therefore, it was absolutely vital for Riley to not become like Father Paul or the vampire, but instead resist this temptation because it was a mirror of his own addiction that he had worked so hard to heal from. Because while Riley wrote letters to others he had hurt, he can't very well give one to the woman he killed. So when he saw her on the boat just before he died, I think that for him, being an atheist, was like when God absolves believers of their sins. But idk just a thought 🤷
Astute. Addiction was a major theme of this series. Most people don't realise how addicted they are. A lot of addictions--sex relationships, work, money, coffee--are normalised. There's a great program called Smart Recovery (similar to AA, but without religion) that explores this. This show was a great depiction of addiction and how destructive it can be, but also how to heal from it (Riley, Joe, Erin).
I grew up Catholic, so a lot of the show resonated with me. I've heard stories before of Angels being portayed as how the angel/vampire appeared in the series. What I found the most interesting was the take on everlasting life. Which, in Catholicism, is if you drank the blood of Christ, you would be granted "everlasting life." Which is supposed to symbolize you being granted entrance into God's kingdom in the afterlife, heaven. What Flanagan did, was he completely flipped it, and turned into a literal, physical meaning. Drink the blood, and you are granted an everlasting, physical life; the way vampires are portrayed in pop culture. I thought that was genius. Just my 2 cents from a non-practicing Catholic.

This is how you make monologues interesting and worth listening. From the homily, to the confesion, the AA meetings and the long conversations. Never I have seen such interest watching people just talking.
I just got done watching the sheriff give a monologue about his time in the nypd and it was amazingly written and delivered. Mike flannigan continues to be an amazing storyteller
That scene between Leeza and Joe Collie in the trailer was one of the huge standout scenes for me. I felt so bad for Joe at the end when he was talking to the priest. He was honestly just trying to get his life together and then THAT happened. That said, when everything was said and done, for as disturbing as his death was, I think he got it the least worst out of most of the characters on the show.

The show deserves all the praise it's receiving, but the scene between Leeza and Joe was absolutely shattering. I broke down in tears - sobbing is more accurate. It was one of the most powerful scenes I've seen in a long time.
That was a beautiful scene! Very powerful! He really couldn't forgive himself. It was killing him. His reaction to seeing her standing there outside of his trailer was perfect. She saved him from himself and it was nice to see him trying to do better afterwards.

Riley's death, for me, was so unexpected, horrific, honorable, and tragic, all, at the same time. I could figure out what was going to happen 90% of the time, once the clues were put in place. But what Riley did... it's been a long time since I was shocked. I also liked that Riley and Erin's relationship wasn't cliched with today's over sexualized troupes. They genuinely cared and accepted each other's faults without blame, remorse, or pity. Right before Riley dies, he tells Erin he loves her. Even thou Riley thought he was so weak, the second he realized what was happening he sacrificed himself to save Erin. Riley was far from weak.
The scene at the beach with the dead cats was over 7 minutes. It was amazing with the camera circling, the people moving in and out of the scene. Very highly choreographed and well executed
I noticed that, too. Getting all that in 1 continuous shot would have been very hard. Could have taken all day! Can you imagine, if a hair was out of place or an actor flubbed a line or the camera op tripped on sand? Reset!
@@glendasuggs2813 I don't know if you watched The Haunting of Hill House, but in the episode ''Two Storms'', he divided it in 3 different continuous shots...it's mindblowing.
The director is very good and creative at such shots. In his other shows you can see similar shots, like the storm scene in the Haunting of Hill House or the spirit coming out of the lake scene in the last ep of Haunting of Bly Manor.
Erins explanation of death helped me come to terms with everything in my life and my moms suicide I’ve never had that feeling and this show is beautiful
It was really well said, in short heaven is when you’re remembered and loved when you’ve passed away it really made me tear up but it’s a beautiful way to think of the end
Yeah, the western world has a strange view of death as some terrible thing. It puts a lot of pressure and stress on people who end their life, and the people affected by that. Other cultures differ and have a saner, less clinical perspective. I suggest watching Melody Sheep's video about the universe (forget the name... Something about the end of the universe) to put things in perspective.

Tomorrow is the 6th month anniversary of the day we lost my dad. I've been struggling with my faith since then, but this show, and especially that scene, really helped me. I cried. Beautiful description of death.
I do think that the angel/vampire is dead as Leeza ability to walk is tied with the creature. Once Leeza said she can't feel her legs means that the creature is gone

I don't think anything suggests that the angel/vampire needs to be alive for its blood to be effective. In old vampire lore there used to be a trope about killing the main one kill the others, but it hasn't been used for a while. There also isn't anything that indicates this. We see a few references that it is like a virus, viruses don't care if the original cell died, as long as it can keep going and living on. Specifically, the doctor mentioned that it might be similar to poison, if you don't take in too much your body takes over again. We also have this dynamic of people not changing into vampires until they die. I find it hard to believe that this will last forever. Otherwise, that girl would make it to the main land, die when she is 80 and start the whole thing all over again. I think it was simply a way to fill this plot hole. The blood runs out eventually and you return to normal.
Dear God, what a series. After the first Haunting on Hill House, I realized that I’m going to watch anything this man puts out. I’m much more partial to supernatural horror dramas so discovering him has been such a revelation.
I’ve not watched the haunting on hill house, but this show has me absolutely glued to the tv. If it’s as good as this then I will probably start it after this one. Netflix has so many good shows right now! Glad I decided to watch Midnight Mass!
I liked the way Hassan finally gave into death just before sunrise. Sparing himself the final image of life on earth being his son burning alive. I also liked Leeza smile after saying she can't feel her legs. Proof the the bad blood was out of her system was more important to her.
I might be off, but the "I can't feel my legs" line signaled to me that the vampire/'angel' had died, thus negating all effects its blood had on everyone else. Which I thought was the perfect closing line, as if to say "it didn't get away".
Erin's character was just so incredible, in the first half of series she's a bit skeptical about religion, still goes to church though, gets moved by it and I think she wants to believe and to be a good Christian, after what she's been through.... But then as soon as she loses her baby, she falls deep into desperate belief, that her unborn child is actually safe and sound in heaven, as if she were in denial, and it's until she speaks to the sheriff and says "I miscarried" that she starts moving forward a bit, she doesn't even go to church after that because of the disappearance of Riley. Her initial interpretation of death is grief, and her second interpretation is based off of what Riley told her on the canoe: we are the dust of the cosmos, and that is God. So in the end, she combined her beliefs with the belief of Riley. What a series.
I liked the cast but the first couple of episodes were so slow that I told myself if something doesn't happen soon, I was going to stop watch. I've done this to a number of shows that looked promising but died for me and I stopped watching. I'm so glad that this show pickup that I had to watch it all the way to the end. Hope for a second season.
Never has a show been all about monologues and dialogues while being horror but kept me so engaged in my thoughts. The show really was just the perfect amount, not too long, not too short, explained what it had to and left the rest up to interpretation honestly the creature getting its wings clipped was such a nice touch and so many moments in the show were very clever, aghhh can't talk enough about it
Bev's sickness was revealed way before refusing to drink the sheriff's blood. it's in everything she says from the start and culminated when she 'decided' that howard is not fit to be saved because he didn't go to mass every sunday.
@@rq9622When I first saw her I thought she looked familiar so I checked. She played the doctor that 'killed' Mcdreamy in Grey's Anatomy. Really respected her for willing to take on two hated roles in her career.
This series has got to be my favorite among Flanagan's series on Netflix. Every episode really gives you something to ponder about death and faith. I couldn't stop tearing up in the ending: with everyone singing in the end, Erin's monologue on death and Ali + his dad praying. So beautiful. Btw, man I watched upon release too, but damn you're fast.
I love the underlining issue of addiction in the show. How it shows the parallels of addiction on all levels. Addiction to drugs or alcohol is not different from an addiction to religion, perception or even blood lust in vampires. They can make you selfish and disregard the feelings of others around you but all can lead to your demise.
The show was amazing, and I grew up in a deeply religious island community like this so it hit different, I knew people personally that spoke and acted like this. The horror of blind faith, people can use religion to justify the most blatantly evil things. If they do a sequel, I would not want it to be vampires again, maybe follow the brother or have him appear in a different supernatural situation, using the knowledge and trauma of what happened on the island, maybe hint at what happened with the angel, that would be cool, but a straight sequel would be very hard.
@@bentouta5 Maybe but also maybe not since that was never established to be how the infection worked. And the doctor implied that the concentration in the blood was the key and it could be burned out or wear off over time(unless you die) which is why Paul was fine for so long. It could just be that she didn't drink more of the sacrement so she didn't have enough in her blood anymore, at least if they wanted to make a sequel, that could be the explanation if they want the angel to still be around. Technically way more of the islanders should have turned when they went to church suddenly for that festival to be blessed but they didn't, likely because the blood was out of their system by that point. I fully accept that it was most likely meant to imply the angel's death, but it's open ended enough to leave doubt.
@@O1OO1O1 Agreed, if they did a continuation, I'd rather it be that one of the surviving 2 end up being present in some way but the situation is totally different with a new main cast, maybe some easter eggs like news reports talking about the diaaster on the island, etc, like a shared world type thing, not a direct sequel.
I believe that the angel did not make it for Leeza said she cannot feel her legs. For the angel’s blood healed her but when it die, so does it’s power.
Yeah. The Vampire is the master of them all. In almost all vampire stories the only way to lose the power of the blood is to kill the Vampire that turned the humans.
That’s not how it worked. She lost her feeling because of the Sun exposure. She was mostly human. See the conversation that the doctor, Erin and the doctors mother had at the dinner table.

I don't think it mattered to him. It just served a purpose. I don't think he actually believed it to be an angel. Maybe in his head he could justify submitting to it and what it gave him if he thought of it as an angel?
I can understand how he could have mistaken it for an angel. Most angels in the Bible look like freaky abominations. However at the same time most of the time those angels drop by send a message and then leave. They don’t take such direct action like “the angel” did for an extended period of time except for in rare cases and when they do take direct action they normally leave behind death or destruction not some kind of resurrection through them.
The show explores taking something and twisting it, and having a distorted view. Also suppression, which he admitted to. It's an indictment of religion and a celebration of spirituality.
Father Pruitt had dementia when he came across the "angel" so to him because of his strong faith and what it says about angels in the bible and how they look like monsters esp in the old testament, I believe he believed he was with an angel. I also think in the universe where the show is set, vampires did not exist. So to all these devout Catholics they believed it was angel especially because it's blood was miraculous. Blood is a big part of the bible. Just my thoughts.
The priest told them not to be afraid. I think most would sacrifice themselves when they saw what monster they'd become. They died unafraid except the coward Bev.
I really liked this limited series and Erins explanation of what happens when we die was unexpectedly touching. I kept rewatching just that segment. Thank you for your review.
YESS I keep saying this , honestly my favorite scene in the entire show and it made me cry like a baby , it was so beautifully said and it made me feel content with death and the afterlife , idk it was very very touching
@@mayavi93As a religious(?) person you understand it differently than someone who is not. Indeed, it is a materialistic perspective if one assume it is only your matter and energy which is recycled. But this is also the closest an atheist can come towards something akin to eternal life. That is, there was never any permanent person to begin with, but the parts of what you are continues like it always have, as they are and will always be - parts of an interconnected whole. It is unclear though, if Erin believes the universe is self aware or not. If it is, she might mean her consciousness is just a part of the universal consciousness that for a brief time tried out how it was being a human. If she did not, she kinda disregarded that the dream only have meaning for the characters within that dream, who will evaporate along with that meaning when the dream ends.
Sloyan’s performance is so scary, like she can be the girl in Misery. But Linklater’s is probably the best in the show. He pulled the audience in and has become my favorite character. Can’t wait to see their future and other works.
I loved Linklater in this show. Problem is I’ve always loved him in the New Adventures of Old Christine and I couldn’t stop expecting him to give some hilariously sarcastic performance 😂 it is a great sign of an excellent actor that he can play such varied performances so perfectly.
Erin and Riley's conversations such as explaining death and how her baby girl is in the afterlife was so touching. When she said we are all "a part", like a drop of water going back to the ocean. We are all connected and made up of energy, that really spoke to me. Also spoiler alert: When Leeza said she couldn't fell her legs at the end, I think it shows that the angel/vampire is dead. And even though she can't walk, there was a sense of relief and happiness that she showed. Such an amazing series!!!!
Throughout the entire series, it never seemed to me that the priest and or the angel were the most corrupted characters on the show. It was always Bev. She totally had such a perverted view of self reflection and religion. Great show.
I think the ash was actually that of the winged vampire. He didn’t make it by sunrise and burned in the air once he was dead all the healing his blood gave was reversed.
@@skotadious The blood she drank was from the winged demon because you have to die first before you can change someone into a vampire. The priest was using the demons blood to heal the town not his own at the beginning.
This movie was so beautifully sad. I felt for everyone. Especially at the end when they all accept their fate. I shed a tear. That’s rare. The last time I remember shedding a tear for a show was hill house by the same guy! Lol. Mike is a brilliant writer and even better director.
That pruit was fucked up for turning the whole town. So delusional up until the final episode. The people deserved better . I was just mad at the ending. 😂

I took it as being both. My interpretation is that the series explains alot of what the christians and christianity could've mistook to be angels, resurrection and god etc but was actually vampires the whole time.
And vampires are even speculated to be something completely different than the traditional supernatural monster. Instead of that it's just some unknown contagion that science hasnt stumbled upon yet. And the whole process is likened to people with extreme UV sensitive skin disorders and that the contagion makes the host have to consume iron in order to sustain it. Quite interesting. I mean it doesnt explain the giant vampire with wings but who knows it could just be some undiscovered species that produce this substance in its bloodstream.
About the fate of the “angel” at the end: Probably died. His wings were clipped in a way that made efficient flying difficult and we didn’t seen the slits in his wings to heal. He was near the island barely flying towards the mainland moments before dawn and the island was 30 miles away from the mainland, hardly an easy distance to fly quickly in that situation. Also, the vampire stayed in the island the whole time, killing cats before he started consuming humans. Why kill cats if it was easy for him to go to the mainland and feast from thousands or millions of people every night? Even if the vampire made it to the mainland, he wouldn’t have had time to find shelter. He was fast, but not THAT fast.
I think Leeza saying "I can't feel my legs" at the end, is due to the "angel" dying at sunrise. It's fairly common in vampire stories, because of how linked people are to the main vampire for them to be "set free" from it's grasp upon the vampire's death. I think anyone not "converted" probably would have had their healings reversed like Leeza.
Oh, so many thoughts. I can’t believe how good it was. If I didn’t have to get up in 5 hours I would watch it again. The love Flanagan has for his actors shows. Allowing them to have uninterrupted monologues. The Book of Revelation scene was just amazing. Early on while watching episode 1 was thinking Jonestown and cults. Wow. It was so amazing! Thank you for the breakdowns as always.
In an interview, Kate S, his partner, who plays Erin, said she was auditioning with him and after giving her some direction for take 2, he said for her to one more, but just as she wants to do it (instead if trying to impress him, which he didn't say, but could see, and she was). So yes, he does.
Did anyone else notice how the word “vampire” was not used at all in the entire show? Not that the implication was at all subtle, but still cool. Leaving it up for interpretation whether all of the monster was truly an angel or a vampire
Also, unless I missed it, the word “Catholic” was never used. I don’t think they ever said “communion” either. Instead the called it “The Sacrament”. I assume this is to avoid some backlash from the church.
It truly is a masterpiece. I was hoping they would have briefly touched on the origins of the beast though. It does bear a lot of similarities to the typical vampire but the fact that it has wings makes me theorise that in this series it is actually a fallen angel/demon.
For me, Leeza losing the feeling in her legs again signified the death of the Ang-pire. It was the look the two gave one another when she acknowledged it that sealed it for me.
I like how they never mentioned vampires in the whole series. It's like people not knowing what zombies are in zombie movies. I was waiting for one of the kids to say, "well, it's a vampire, DUH!" The comparisons to Stephen King's Salem's Lot are also many. A powerful vampire is brought to town, hidden away by his familiar and through most of the story the vampire remains hidden and when it is revealed it is truly monstrous. Since Mike Flanagan has adapted a number of King's books, I assume he has a thing for King. I do think it is wrong to call what the priest thinks is an angel, an angel. I assume it's just a very old vampire. Sure, it's got wings but it looks almost exactly like the final version of the vampire in Fright Night. I agree with you, this is an awesome series and I look forward to Flanagan's next venture.
Was really intriguing and well made. The acting was phenomenal. A good spin on religion and dealing with loss/grief. Even the dichotomy between Beverly and Pruitt shows an extreme layering of ideas. Beverly being the manipulative, walking superiority complex who uses doctrine to control others - and Pruitt being man of faith, who really believes(or wants to) in what he’s doing as the spearhead of action. Episode 4 is peak screenwriting/storytelling. Wasn’t too big on the very end, felt a little bit rushed for some characters…and sometimes during the course of the show the monologues were ill timed. Everyone seemed to have a story to tell at any given moment. Which is fine, especially when they’re so well written/acted…but sometimes it gets in the way and slows down beats of a story that would happen more naturally. 8/10
Pruitt was using it selfishly too, he was just in denial. His first thought upon finding an “Angel” was “now I can be with my illicit lover forever!” rather than notifying the rest of the Magisterium? He knew he wasn’t following God.
This show will stick with me forever. I wasnt too keen on it after the first episode but I continued watching it and found very similar parallels to its characters individual stories, its theme, and my life currently. I cried far too much watching while watching it but its just one of those shows/movies that will haunt me in both a good and bad way.
Seven hours straight and definitely worth it. I liked that each episode title linked to a book of the Bible. Hearing the different thoughts on religion makes me want to read up on the different denominations. And thanks for a couple of the “Easter Eggs” that I missed. I will have to watch this series again soon.
When Pruitt first died, it seemed like 1. The miracles were draining him bc he got really sick each time. And he was using the vampires blood to live. That’s why he kept saying that prayer to call the thing to give him blood in his decanter. He hadn’t murdered to feed. I think he died of starvation. Not the fanatic lady. At least I don’t think.
Paul was definitely killed by Bev just like how Joe’s dog (Pete?) got poisoned. We got a glimpse oh her dress whilst she gave Pete the hotdog after getting the poisonous compound. And another glimpse of her taking the compound bottle after she saw the clipping of young Monsignor. She was testing whether Paul could be resurrected by killing him herself.

I also thought it looked as if he had been poisoned , just like the dog..but Bev seemed obsessed with him, why would she want to kill him? & did she have a chance to poison him right before that happened?
I assume bev is the one preparing pruit’s food, so she could have done that. From what is implied it seems bev was taking advantage of the monsignor and his condition when he was still old and had dementia. And when this young priest came she couldn’t do it anymore , she may have been trying to get rid of him. At the end , bev is the ultimate “user” and everything was just a pawn to her , even the monsignor, the angel, etc.
The 2 most memorable parts for me was when Sarah refused the blood and when Bev tried to bury a hole in the sand. I thought Paul died bc he consumed too much of the Vampires blood, too much = toxic.
As a muslim, I'm happy about the fact that the sheriff was portrayed as the rationalist because that is what a muslim should really be. The Qur'an gives us a golden rule when deciding our faith 2:111 "They say that no one shall ever enter Paradise unless he is a Jew, or a Christian. These are their fancies. Say, “*Bring your proof, if you are truthful.*" " There should always be proof for everything you believe in.

Even in that first episode, seeing Riley stop to look down at the entrance of his folks' home, that part about vampires needing/asking for permission before entering ones home popped into my head, just sent shivers through me.
Scariest thing for me were them eyes in the dark. These were the scenes before we knew it was the angel. I loved not knowing what we were watching. It reminded me of Jeepers Creepers back in the day.
I think midnight mass is the craziest thing i've ever watched. Its so different, its so honest, its so touching, its so deep, its so real, its so heart wrenching...It's the best depiction of faith i've ever seen ! It is definitely Mike Flanagan 's greatest work ! Definitely worth watching !!!!!
Just finished the season and I enjoyed it overall. I do think some of the monologues could have been cut and maybe make each episode about 43-50 mins instead of over an hour. If you have a short attention span you won’t like this as it is slower paced.
The only monologue i hate was Pruits in the aa meetings after riley was biten. He was so delusional about religion and the vampire he encountered. Forcing his own belief to riley.
the long conversations about their feelings and beliefs are what its about though, none of it could have been cut. Ive got adhd and still enjoyed every second of it. It seems like it just isnt for you
As someone who has stopped the their vice-grip grasp on the idea of afterlife, I was so afraid of dying because death seemed like the ultimate end. Erin's monologue helped me look at it at a different angle. It was so beautiful.
Very strongly reminiscent of The Unholy (2021), Needful Things mixed with the Jonestown massacre. I still thoroughly enjoyed this series. There is so much attention to detail as far as the plot and storytelling, and the dialogue is inspiring. It is truly a masterpiece. I binge watched all the episodes, and wished there was more. At the end I was left with a strange feeling of tranquility and peace that lingered for some time. I really can't praise the series enough.
This series gave me everything, Also I must say that first sermon from father Paul made me very emotional. That’s when I knew this series was going to be good!
I had no idea what this series was about but I love your channel so I gave it a go. I was left intrigued so I started the series at 7pm and ended at 2 in the morning. I'm usually in bed 2-3 hours before but I could not stop. The confession/story with the inter-cuts of the wood carvings was amazing. I loved the discussion if mortality and religion combined with supernatural horror. Vampires have long been associated with Christianity but this takes it to the next level
I am glad Leeza can't walk in the end because it means she can die in peace without having to worry about turning into a vampire and killing more innocent people
In some vampire stories, when the head vampire, the one whose blood transforms every one, when he dies the effect of his blood wares off. That's what I thought happened when Lisa lost the feeling in her legs, that it was a sign that the head vampire, the "angel", had died and the effect of his blood had worn off. Subsequently, that might have also meant that everyone turned by his blood would have been saved if the had waited out his death.
It took me so long to realize this was a vampire story. Like the Angel isn’t an Angel it’s a vampire. Everyone in the series becomes a vampire. At one point I was just thinking “This is weird, are the becoming angels or are they vampire because this is very reminiscent of vampires.” Makes me want to rewatch knowing that I wasn’t going crazy lol
I think it speaks to how the delusional can rationalize anything (even something as so obviously objectively evil, like a vampire with giant bat wings) into something good if it serves their delusion. If it serves their cause.
The Midnight Mass sermon at the church was about facing death with bravery, which the congregation finally did when they waited for the sunlight while singing in the last episode.
On the shelves in Riley's room were Stephan King books....I thought that was funny because the series reminded. a little of Salem's Lot....especially the winged creature.... and a little of 30 Days of Night mixed in....

Mike Flanagan directed doctor sleep and Stephen king is fan of his and vice versa. I want to see Ari Aster directed a Stephen King movie. I thought IT would've been perfect.
As someone who is a former Christian, almost every episode was triggering. Multiple times throughout the series, characters would quote scripture to justify their actions, beliefs, and words. On one hand, it disgusted me, and on the other, it felt validating of my experience. A few episodes in, as I got a clearer picture of where Flanagan was going, I began to enjoy the ride. I found myself engulfed in these long monologues (from every one of the main cast members) about faith, religion, the afterlife, islamophobia, forgiveness, addiction. And they all intertwined so beautifully. I cried once the credits rolled for the last episode. It felt like a perfect ending. Personally, I had to sit and sort through a lot of feelings about my own faith. Reflecting upon the immense guilt I still sometimes carry for the harm I most likely inflicted upon others when I was a believer. Feeling pity for the islanders that sought for hope and redemption in a force that they believed to be holy but was clearly malevolent to those outside of the faith (ex: Riley and Hassan). How there's equal importance in forgiving yourself as there is in being forgiven by others (ex: Joe). Having loyally watched Flanagan's other Netflix shows previously, I believe this show outranks even Hill House itself. This is just my opinion, based on the critique of the show and my personal experience sitting through it.
I understand when you think about it reading the Bible should be a personal experience. Yet we have bible study to interpret it the way the priest/preacher/pastor sees it.
I’m a Christian, and just because scripture can be misinterpreted, twisted, manipulated by Man for evil purposes, that doesn’t make the true message of the bible bad, the point is that Man’s word can’t always be trusted as we are corrupt beings, but Gods word can always be trusted, that’s why discernment is needed to decipher truth from lies. When people don’t understand God and the message of God then they can be easily led astray.
On the angels demise, in many telling of vampire mythology when the head vampire dies, the effects of their power are revoked. So covering the distance to safety with diced wings was not likely and proven by the ash that fell on the kids as he combusted and Lisa's paralysis returned.
I was wondering whether the ashes at the end weren't only the people of Crockett, but also of the Angel who burned in the sun and the ashes were falling from the sky.
Just finished the series. Didn’t even realize this was done by the same person who did the Haunting of Hill House. No wonder I loved it! I’m sure I’m gonna be rewatching it soon. There are so many nuances to this show, and like many, binged watched it with no breaks 🤦🏻♀️
This show was immaculate gave my perspective on life the push it needed. It also shifted my view of the Bevs of the world as necessary for they are the ones that truly test your faith. Not just in a higher power, but in yourself.

But a survivor is normally more credible than a bystander.
@@O1OO1O1 im not sure how what I stated earlier is indicative of my current paradigm of reality. Regardless there is something to be said of people that are able to survive the toxicity that is BEV and stand tall. I view BEV as an amalgamation of the difficulties we face on a daily basis. The truth is you will always be faced with tough choices and people that will make you second guess yourself. Life is tough and as you stateD BEV is a Product of a broken system which indicates she is an Integrant of a system no less. This means many like her exist in the world and being able to condition yourself against people like her is invaluable.
@@O1OO1O1 I view all counterparts of a society as necessary. Every one has a part and they play that wether it be bad or good or in between. How you prepare yourself against things that are already in place and will continue to remain after your existence is entirely up to you.
A couple things I noticed: 1. The rat poison scene in episode 6 gave off major Jonestown vibes. Jonestown was a real world event where a pastor/cult leader named Jim Jones convinced 900 people to commit suicide by drinking poison (this is where the phrase “drink the kool aid” comes from). 2. Also, the number 7 appears a lot. There’s a Se7en poster in Riley’s room, there’s 7 deadly sins, 7 sacraments (such as communion), 7 episodes, and if I remember right there are even 7 people who escape the church at the end of episode 6. What this means I don’t know, but I thought it was fascinating.
My theory after the first episode was that each episode and each of the main characters corresponds to one of the deadly sins but I couldn't quite make it work in my head.

It is basically the reverse of the Bible. Warren and Leeza as Adam and Eve but they're the last two, the divine conception but Erin lost the baby instead of gaining it, and the Angel is the Devil. The show has so many amazing layers. One of the best really

I get your process and all, but it feels kind of lame to review an entire season of something the day it comes out and not delve into each episode and then the series as a whole, I won't watch the video today and likely will forget to even come back to it once I finish the series. I understand the concept of content creation, but there is the Walmart way and then there is the Harrods way. Watching a series of videos that flesh out detail and insight for each episode is far more meaningful and interesting than a recap of the season and a quick snip of your review of it. My 2 cents for what it is worth.

That's beautiful! I loved all the doubling-up and symbolism in the story. Like how the cats are called strays, and John/Paul and everyone else stray at points during the story but can find their way back to 'god' if they try to make amends etc.

I loathed Bev and the only time she got told off wasn’t to my satisfaction. But when it came time to her death and she was clawing in the sand and crying, her unhappiness was fine with me. So sad though.
I’m glad Riley’s mom told her “you’re not a good person” but I agree, I wish that confrontation had been bigger and Bev had been told how wrong she has been her whole life.
I think she really believed she was doing good so it was a shock for her to hear that she’s a bad person.
I really enjoyed this show for a lot of the same reasons people are mentioning. However as a Muslim from nyc, I particularly appreciated sheriff Hassan as a character and how realistic he felt. It’s not often Muslims are portrayed outside stereotypes so I’m incredibly grateful. That said watching Bev dig through the dirt to hide from the sun was 10/10 fitting for her 👌🏽
I know, right? I was afraid she would succeed and they would end it on a cliff hanger, with her and the Vampire surviving, which would have been bad writing. I loved everything about this series. Although, I wish her character would have had to suffer more. She was so awful.

... And I loved the Sheriff's question, "Why would God heal her legs while, miles away, allowing a child to die?"
She won't drink his "dirty" blood but will dig through dirt to survive. A fitting ending for an absolutely hateful character. And to think that we might all know a Bev or a Bev lite in our lives really speaks volumes for the times we live in.

I kind of feel like “I can’t feel my legs” is a hint the angel is dead. In all the mythology, if the “head” vampire dies, so does its brood. Since she wasn’t turned but had its blood, I feel the blood “died” when it did.

Noticed that the deaths of Riley & Erin are portrayed in the way the opposite explained dying. With Riley seemingly forgiven and presumably (even if metaphorically) taken to afterlife by his victim and Erin laying on the ground, her body returning to the earth & the cosmos. Beautiful writing.
Flanagan solidifies his standing as one of my favorite visual storytellers.

Erin's death she claims that we were created by the atoms and matter from the universe, and our lives never solely belonged to us, because we were formed by Gods infinite-giving universe. Our lives are only a result of the dying planets and cosmos and there was never such a thing a individual being in Gods universe.
I never heard of Erin's philosophical perspective before. Very very moving.
@@crushingit5128 It''s actually close to the canonical catholic interpretation of the afterlife. Everyone likes to think of heaven as a place where people chill out as individuals. But if you were to ask the Pope, he'd probably confirm the literal meaning of returning to God, or becoming one with God, that's frequently mentioned in the bible. It's just that interpretation isn't terribly popular anymore. People like the idea of remaining who they are and just continuing more than becoming a part of something else entirely.
Riley, who questioned his life purpose, ends up saving the entire world.

I feel like the scene with Riley’s parents near then end is so key. They said they didn’t have to feed, they were still in control. That feels like a necessary lens through which to view all of the chaos and violence. The frenzy in the church was still psychological and not strictly physical or uncontrollable. Choosing to add that dialogue really transforms the experience to me
They found a way of overcoming the endless desire of the realm of the Hungry Ghosts.
I liked that take on it too, it's like Riley's parents have really been forgiven because they confronted their own issues like overcoming sin. On a personal level I get it when you overcome that feelings of guilt or spite or whatever it might be and decide to forgive/forgive yourself, those tendencies of sin becomes much more easy because you are in control of it now vs letting it control you.
which just goes to show lots of the townspeople had unresolved issues they didnt want to confront or admit. Now its like that tendency for blood was symbolic for their control of their own vices whichever it might be.
The real question is how are Riley's family so strong in will? Even his brother who survives will have to handle all that for the rest of his life.
It also echoes Riley’s words to Father Paul earlier about Rational Recovery, separating the hungry voice inside from yourself.
It just gave them a reason to unleash their true evil desires. Be it vamprism here, or religion or MAGA or antivaxx or homophobia or misogyny out in the real world.
Something that took me a long time to pick up on was the Doctor telling her girlfriend about the priest always starring at her, which made her uncomfortable. She spend her whole life thinking the priest was judging her for her sexuality, when in reality it was just a father catching a glimpse of his daughter groing up.

the scene between Rileys parents at the end was so meaningful. Rileys Dad never forgave him for giving into his addiction and ruining everyones life. When Rileys dad tells his wife that the hunger doesnt change who you are, he is able to separate himself from the hunger, which he was NEVER able to do with Riley and his addiction (and what it caused). in that moment, i see that as Riley’s dad finally understanding his son and forgiving him.
i also thought it was beautiful that Riley experienced death the way that Erin explained it (in regards to her baby) and Erin experienced death the way Riley had explained it. Soulmates.
I will never forget the way I felt when Riley saw the girl he killed in the boat, whole & healed... and she took him to Heaven, truly forgiven. Perfection.

The Priest’s monologue at episode 3 is the best scene out of the whole series IMO. He tried to make sense of what happened to him for himself, talking alone in a confession booth without no one listening. So scary how someone could justify any bizzare events and acts through religion and it happens in real life too

See Midnight Mass is actually about the way how fanatic religious people lay out the texts of the Bible or any other holy book the way they want to. I’m religious myself and I hated the way the characters of the series interpreted the texts of the Bible just so they fit to the events they are experiencing. If you know the meaning of the texts, you can tell how far off they are when connecting the events to the texts. Flanagan actually showed this at the end when Pruitt realized how wrong the things they did were.

The scariest idea of this series for me was the way they viewed the monster as an angel. Also, how the creature had human like intelligence, but never spoke and couldn't overcome it's instinct to feed.
Yes, I really liked that the creature never spoke, so that the priest put his own interpretation on the actions of the creature. I feel like that implied that many Biblical angel's actions were interpreted.
He did speak or we can say he imitated the drug dealer’s voice so that he could lure the drug dealer into the dark and then murdered him.
I'm thinking that vampire was once a human thousands of years ago, eventually all new vampires turn into their true form.

Outstanding show. The most memorable scene for me was probably Riley's sacrifice - simultaneously horrifying and an absolutely perfect way to redeem himself and try to save the woman he loved.

I love the heavy implication (or rather juxtaposition) of the 'ark concept' towards the end as Beverly Keane preached about how she is leading the villagers into Noah's Ark that is the rec center.. while not too far away, Warren and Leeza are literally the only ones survived on a literal 'ark'.
The Rec center is even shaped like an upside down boat.

Although Erin cutting the vampire's wings at the end was to mirror the story she told of her mother trying to cut a dove's wings, I thought it also was an incredible depiction of addiction and helped further redeem Riley as a character. The vampire was so consumed with her blood that even as she was cutting into him, he couldn't take himself away from it. I believe this speaks to how one can be so addicted that they don't notice the harm being done around them. Furthermore, when the vampire tried to look away (perhaps someone trying to end their addiction), Erin pulled him back (like a relapse). Therefore, it was absolutely vital for Riley to not become like Father Paul or the vampire, but instead resist this temptation because it was a mirror of his own addiction that he had worked so hard to heal from. Because while Riley wrote letters to others he had hurt, he can't very well give one to the woman he killed. So when he saw her on the boat just before he died, I think that for him, being an atheist, was like when God absolves believers of their sins.

Astute. Addiction was a major theme of this series. Most people don't realise how addicted they are. A lot of addictions--sex relationships, work, money, coffee--are normalised.
There's a great program called Smart Recovery (similar to AA, but without religion) that explores this.
This show was a great depiction of addiction and how destructive it can be, but also how to heal from it (Riley, Joe, Erin).

I grew up Catholic, so a lot of the show resonated with me. I've heard stories before of Angels being portayed as how the angel/vampire appeared in the series. What I found the most interesting was the take on everlasting life. Which, in Catholicism, is if you drank the blood of Christ, you would be granted "everlasting life." Which is supposed to symbolize you being granted entrance into God's kingdom in the afterlife, heaven. What Flanagan did, was he completely flipped it, and turned into a literal, physical meaning. Drink the blood, and you are granted an everlasting, physical life; the way vampires are portrayed in pop culture. I thought that was genius. Just my 2 cents from a non-practicing Catholic.

This is how you make monologues interesting and worth listening. From the homily, to the confesion, the AA meetings and the long conversations. Never I have seen such interest watching people just talking.
Fr the conversation were so long but not one second I felt bored or the need to skip a bit. It was all interesting and I loved this series

Mike Flanagan seems comfortable and confident in his shoes. He has his own style, genre and actors. And he keeps nailing it.
That scene between Leeza and Joe Collie in the trailer was one of the huge standout scenes for me. I felt so bad for Joe at the end when he was talking to the priest. He was honestly just trying to get his life together and then THAT happened. That said, when everything was said and done, for as disturbing as his death was, I think he got it the least worst out of most of the characters on the show.

The show deserves all the praise it's receiving, but the scene between Leeza and Joe was absolutely shattering. I broke down in tears - sobbing is more accurate. It was one of the most powerful scenes I've seen in a long time.

That was a beautiful scene! Very powerful! He really couldn't forgive himself. It was killing him. His reaction to seeing her standing there outside of his trailer was perfect. She saved him from himself and it was nice to see him trying to do better afterwards.

Riley's death, for me, was so unexpected, horrific, honorable, and tragic, all, at the same time. I could figure out what was going to happen 90% of the time, once the clues were put in place. But what Riley did... it's been a long time since I was shocked. I also liked that Riley and Erin's relationship wasn't cliched with today's over sexualized troupes. They genuinely cared and accepted each other's faults without blame, remorse, or pity. Right before Riley dies, he tells Erin he loves her. Even thou Riley thought he was so weak, the second he realized what was happening he sacrificed himself to save Erin. Riley was far from weak.
Can't remember the last time I shit myself at a jumpscare as much as when Riley meets the Angel.

The scene at the beach with the dead cats was over 7 minutes. It was amazing with the camera circling, the people moving in and out of the scene. Very highly choreographed and well executed
I noticed that, too. Getting all that in 1 continuous shot would have been very hard. Could have taken all day! Can you imagine, if a hair was out of place or an actor flubbed a line or the camera op tripped on sand? Reset!

Mike said in an interview that the birds on the beach were cgi. The actors were told to look around as if watching the birds, well choreographed.
The director is very good and creative at such shots. In his other shows you can see similar shots, like the storm scene in the Haunting of Hill House or the spirit coming out of the lake scene in the last ep of Haunting of Bly Manor.
Erins explanation of death helped me come to terms with everything in my life and my moms suicide I’ve never had that feeling and this show is beautiful
It was really well said, in short heaven is when you’re remembered and loved when you’ve passed away it really made me tear up but it’s a beautiful way to think of the end
Yeah, the western world has a strange view of death as some terrible thing. It puts a lot of pressure and stress on people who end their life, and the people affected by that.
Other cultures differ and have a saner, less clinical perspective.
I suggest watching Melody Sheep's video about the universe (forget the name... Something about the end of the universe) to put things in perspective.

I don't think anything suggests that the angel/vampire needs to be alive for its blood to be effective.
In old vampire lore there used to be a trope about killing the main one kill the others, but it hasn't been used for a while.
There also isn't anything that indicates this. We see a few references that it is like a virus, viruses don't care if the original cell died, as long as it can keep going and living on.
Specifically, the doctor mentioned that it might be similar to poison, if you don't take in too much your body takes over again.
We also have this dynamic of people not changing into vampires until they die. I find it hard to believe that this will last forever. Otherwise, that girl would make it to the main land, die when she is 80 and start the whole thing all over again.
I think it was simply a way to fill this plot hole. The blood runs out eventually and you return to normal.

Dear God, what a series. After the first Haunting on Hill House, I realized that I’m going to watch anything this man puts out.
I’m much more partial to supernatural horror dramas so discovering him has been such a revelation.

I liked the way Hassan finally gave into death just before sunrise. Sparing himself the final image of life on earth being his son burning alive.
I also liked Leeza smile after saying she can't feel her legs. Proof the the bad blood was out of her system was more important to her.
I might be off, but the "I can't feel my legs" line signaled to me that the vampire/'angel' had died, thus negating all effects its blood had on everyone else. Which I thought was the perfect closing line, as if to say "it didn't get away".
Erin's character was just so incredible, in the first half of series she's a bit skeptical about religion, still goes to church though, gets moved by it and I think she wants to believe and to be a good Christian, after what she's been through.... But then as soon as she loses her baby, she falls deep into desperate belief, that her unborn child is actually safe and sound in heaven, as if she were in denial, and it's until she speaks to the sheriff and says "I miscarried" that she starts moving forward a bit, she doesn't even go to church after that because of the disappearance of Riley. Her initial interpretation of death is grief, and her second interpretation is based off of what Riley told her on the canoe: we are the dust of the cosmos, and that is God. So in the end, she combined her beliefs with the belief of Riley. What a series.
Masterpiece. I admit I was kinda bored with the slow pacing of the first couple episodes but then it all paid off. 10/10
To me it was just the first episode the rest was good.
I liked the cast but the first couple of episodes were so slow that I told myself if something doesn't happen soon, I was going to stop watch. I've done this to a number of shows that looked promising but died for me and I stopped watching. I'm so glad that this show pickup that I had to watch it all the way to the end. Hope for a second season.

Never has a show been all about monologues and dialogues while being horror but kept me so engaged in my thoughts. The show really was just the perfect amount, not too long, not too short, explained what it had to and left the rest up to interpretation honestly the creature getting its wings clipped was such a nice touch and so many moments in the show were very clever, aghhh can't talk enough about it
I had to watch all episodes on a marathon. I have to but this. As I know there will be more to unpack.
I believe Riley dad didn’t feed because the pain of hunger for him was no different than his chronic back pain he endured for years.

Bev's sickness was revealed way before refusing to drink the sheriff's blood. it's in everything she says from the start and culminated when she 'decided' that howard is not fit to be saved because he didn't go to mass every sunday.
The moment she opened her mouth it was clear she was deluded. That actress was incredibly skilled.

This series has got to be my favorite among Flanagan's series on Netflix. Every episode really gives you something to ponder about death and faith. I couldn't stop tearing up in the ending: with everyone singing in the end, Erin's monologue on death and Ali + his dad praying. So beautiful.

I love the underlining issue of addiction in the show. How it shows the parallels of addiction on all levels. Addiction to drugs or alcohol is not different from an addiction to religion, perception or even blood lust in vampires. They can make you selfish and disregard the feelings of others around you but all can lead to your demise.
I'm so glad that I went into this completely blind. The mystery unraveling was very intriguing. I binged it for 7 hrs straight too 👍
The show was amazing, and I grew up in a deeply religious island community like this so it hit different, I knew people personally that spoke and acted like this. The horror of blind faith, people can use religion to justify the most blatantly evil things. If they do a sequel, I would not want it to be vampires again, maybe follow the brother or have him appear in a different supernatural situation, using the knowledge and trauma of what happened on the island, maybe hint at what happened with the angel, that would be cool, but a straight sequel would be very hard.
I'd prefer a sequel more akin to Bly. But I'd rather see a different take. This was a very complete work.
I think it's safe to say the "angel" died because Leeza lost feeling in her legs. I think that's Flanagan's way of saying the connection is gone.
@@bentouta5 Maybe but also maybe not since that was never established to be how the infection worked. And the doctor implied that the concentration in the blood was the key and it could be burned out or wear off over time(unless you die) which is why Paul was fine for so long. It could just be that she didn't drink more of the sacrement so she didn't have enough in her blood anymore, at least if they wanted to make a sequel, that could be the explanation if they want the angel to still be around. Technically way more of the islanders should have turned when they went to church suddenly for that festival to be blessed but they didn't, likely because the blood was out of their system by that point. I fully accept that it was most likely meant to imply the angel's death, but it's open ended enough to leave doubt.

Yeah. The Vampire is the master of them all. In almost all vampire stories the only way to lose the power of the blood is to kill the Vampire that turned the humans.
That’s not how it worked. She lost her feeling because of the Sun exposure. She was mostly human. See the conversation that the doctor, Erin and the doctors mother had at the dinner table.

I don't think it mattered to him. It just served a purpose. I don't think he actually believed it to be an angel. Maybe in his head he could justify submitting to it and what it gave him if he thought of it as an angel?
I can understand how he could have mistaken it for an angel. Most angels in the Bible look like freaky abominations. However at the same time most of the time those angels drop by send a message and then leave. They don’t take such direct action like “the angel” did for an extended period of time except for in rare cases and when they do take direct action they normally leave behind death or destruction not some kind of resurrection through them.
The show explores taking something and twisting it, and having a distorted view. Also suppression, which he admitted to. It's an indictment of religion and a celebration of spirituality.
Father Pruitt had dementia when he came across the "angel" so to him because of his strong faith and what it says about angels in the bible and how they look like monsters esp in the old testament, I believe he believed he was with an angel. I also think in the universe where the show is set, vampires did not exist. So to all these devout Catholics they believed it was angel especially because it's blood was miraculous. Blood is a big part of the bible. Just my thoughts.
That whole town could have been saved if pruitt had watched ONE vampire movie 😆
The ending scene with the sun rising and the song "Nearer My God to Thee" had me choking up, what a great show

@@mayavi93As a religious(?) person you understand it differently than someone who is not. Indeed, it is a materialistic perspective if one assume it is only your matter and energy which is recycled. But this is also the closest an atheist can come towards something akin to eternal life. That is, there was never any permanent person to begin with, but the parts of what you are continues like it always have, as they are and will always be - parts of an interconnected whole.
It is unclear though, if Erin believes the universe is self aware or not. If it is, she might mean her consciousness is just a part of the universal consciousness that for a brief time tried out how it was being a human. If she did not, she kinda disregarded that the dream only have meaning for the characters within that dream, who will evaporate along with that meaning when the dream ends.
Sloyan’s performance is so scary, like she can be the girl in Misery. But Linklater’s is probably the best in the show. He pulled the audience in and has become my favorite character. Can’t wait to see their future and other works.
I loved Linklater in this show. Problem is I’ve always loved him in the New Adventures of Old Christine and I couldn’t stop expecting him to give some hilariously sarcastic performance 😂 it is a great sign of an excellent actor that he can play such varied performances so perfectly.
Erin and Riley's conversations such as explaining death and how her baby girl is in the afterlife was so touching. When she said we are all "a part", like a drop of water going back to the ocean. We are all connected and made up of energy, that really spoke to me. Also spoiler alert:
When Leeza said she couldn't fell her legs at the end, I think it shows that the angel/vampire is dead. And even though she can't walk, there was a sense of relief and happiness that she showed. Such an amazing series!!!!
Throughout the entire series, it never seemed to me that the priest and or the angel were the most corrupted characters on the show. It was always Bev. She totally had such a perverted view of self reflection and religion. Great show.
I think the ash was actually that of the winged vampire. He didn’t make it by sunrise and burned in the air once he was dead all the healing his blood gave was reversed.

This movie was so beautifully sad. I felt for everyone. Especially at the end when they all accept their fate. I shed a tear. That’s rare. The last time I remember shedding a tear for a show was hill house by the same guy! Lol. Mike is a brilliant writer and even better director.
Yeah Flanagan is the king of really making me feel for all the characters in a Horror story which is really lacking in the Genre.

I took it as being both. My interpretation is that the series explains alot of what the christians and christianity could've mistook to be angels, resurrection and god etc but was actually vampires the whole time.
And vampires are even speculated to be something completely different than the traditional supernatural monster. Instead of that it's just some unknown contagion that science hasnt stumbled upon yet. And the whole process is likened to people with extreme UV sensitive skin disorders and that the contagion makes the host have to consume iron in order to sustain it. Quite interesting. I mean it doesnt explain the giant vampire with wings but who knows it could just be some undiscovered species that produce this substance in its bloodstream.
About the fate of the “angel” at the end:
Probably died. His wings were clipped in a way that made efficient flying difficult and we didn’t seen the slits in his wings to heal. He was near the island barely flying towards the mainland moments before dawn and the island was 30 miles away from the mainland, hardly an easy distance to fly quickly in that situation. Also, the vampire stayed in the island the whole time, killing cats before he started consuming humans. Why kill cats if it was easy for him to go to the mainland and feast from thousands or millions of people every night? Even if the vampire made it to the mainland, he wouldn’t have had time to find shelter. He was fast, but not THAT fast.
I think Leeza saying "I can't feel my legs" at the end, is due to the "angel" dying at sunrise. It's fairly common in vampire stories, because of how linked people are to the main vampire for them to be "set free" from it's grasp upon the vampire's death. I think anyone not "converted" probably would have had their healings reversed like Leeza.

Oh, so many thoughts. I can’t believe how good it was. If I didn’t have to get up in 5 hours I would watch it again. The love Flanagan has for his actors shows. Allowing them to have uninterrupted monologues. The Book of Revelation scene was just amazing. Early on while watching episode 1 was thinking Jonestown and cults. Wow. It was so amazing!

In an interview, Kate S, his partner, who plays Erin, said she was auditioning with him and after giving her some direction for take 2, he said for her to one more, but just as she wants to do it (instead if trying to impress him, which he didn't say, but could see, and she was).

Just finished watching it. It's pretty darn good. Felt like a love letter to Stephen King. It was like Needful Things meets Salem's Lot.
Did anyone else notice how the word “vampire” was not used at all in the entire show? Not that the implication was at all subtle, but still cool. Leaving it up for interpretation whether all of the monster was truly an angel or a vampire
Also, unless I missed it, the word “Catholic” was never used. I don’t think they ever said “communion” either. Instead the called it “The Sacrament”. I assume this is to avoid some backlash from the church.

It truly is a masterpiece. I was hoping they would have briefly touched on the origins of the beast though. It does bear a lot of similarities to the typical vampire but the fact that it has wings makes me theorise that in this series it is actually a fallen angel/demon.
For me, Leeza losing the feeling in her legs again signified the death of the Ang-pire. It was the look the two gave one another when she acknowledged it that sealed it for me.
I like how they never mentioned vampires in the whole series. It's like people not knowing what zombies are in zombie movies. I was waiting for one of the kids to say, "well, it's a vampire, DUH!"
The comparisons to Stephen King's Salem's Lot are also many. A powerful vampire is brought to town, hidden away by his familiar and through most of the story the vampire remains hidden and when it is revealed it is truly monstrous. Since Mike Flanagan has adapted a number of King's books, I assume he has a thing for King.
I do think it is wrong to call what the priest thinks is an angel, an angel. I assume it's just a very old vampire. Sure, it's got wings but it looks almost exactly like the final version of the vampire in Fright Night. I agree with you, this is an awesome series and I look forward to Flanagan's next venture.
Was really intriguing and well made. The acting was phenomenal. A good spin on religion and dealing with loss/grief.
Even the dichotomy between Beverly and Pruitt shows an extreme layering of ideas. Beverly being the manipulative, walking superiority complex who uses doctrine to control others - and Pruitt being man of faith, who really believes(or wants to) in what he’s doing as the spearhead of action.
Episode 4 is peak screenwriting/storytelling.
Wasn’t too big on the very end, felt a little bit rushed for some characters…and sometimes during the course of the show the monologues were ill timed. Everyone seemed to have a story to tell at any given moment. Which is fine, especially when they’re so well written/acted…but sometimes it gets in the way and slows down beats of a story that would happen more naturally.

Pruitt was using it selfishly too, he was just in denial. His first thought upon finding an “Angel” was “now I can be with my illicit lover forever!” rather than notifying the rest of the Magisterium? He knew he wasn’t following God.
This show will stick with me forever. I wasnt too keen on it after the first episode but I continued watching it and found very similar parallels to its characters individual stories, its theme, and my life currently. I cried far too much watching while watching it but its just one of those shows/movies that will haunt me in both a good and bad way.
Seven hours straight and definitely worth it. I liked that each episode title linked to a book of the Bible. Hearing the different thoughts on religion makes me want to read up on the different denominations. And thanks for a couple of the “Easter Eggs” that I missed. I will have to watch this series again soon.
When Pruitt first died, it seemed like 1. The miracles were draining him bc he got really sick each time. And he was using the vampires blood to live. That’s why he kept saying that prayer to call the thing to give him blood in his decanter. He hadn’t murdered to feed. I think he died of starvation. Not the fanatic lady. At least I don’t think.
Paul was definitely killed by Bev just like how Joe’s dog (Pete?) got poisoned. We got a glimpse oh her dress whilst she gave Pete the hotdog after getting the poisonous compound. And another glimpse of her taking the compound bottle after she saw the clipping of young Monsignor. She was testing whether Paul could be resurrected by killing him herself.
I feel like the angel did die based on Lizzas line about her leg feeling going away in the end. His power was gone. Just a theory.

@@atomnous in that case, explain how the lady went back to being paralyzed after the supposed death of the vampire(angel). Well, magic is just unknown/unexplained science.
I also thought it looked as if he had been poisoned , just like the dog..but Bev seemed obsessed with him, why would she want to kill him? & did she have a chance to poison him right before that happened?
I assume bev is the one preparing pruit’s food, so she could have done that. From what is implied it seems bev was taking advantage of the monsignor and his condition when he was still old and had dementia. And when this young priest came she couldn’t do it anymore , she may have been trying to get rid of him. At the end , bev is the ultimate “user” and everything was just a pawn to her , even the monsignor, the angel, etc.

The 2 most memorable parts for me was when Sarah refused the blood and when Bev tried to bury a hole in the sand. I thought Paul died bc he consumed too much of the Vampires blood, too much = toxic.
As a muslim, I'm happy about the fact that the sheriff was portrayed as the rationalist because that is what a muslim should really be. The Qur'an gives us a golden rule when deciding our faith 2:111 "They say that no one shall ever enter Paradise unless he is a Jew, or a Christian. These are their fancies. Say, “*Bring your proof, if you are truthful.*" " There should always be proof for everything you believe in.
Islam is the ultimate evil. Quran asks it's believers to start a war with India.

Even in that first episode, seeing Riley stop to look down at the entrance of his folks' home, that part about vampires needing/asking for permission before entering ones home popped into my head, just sent shivers through me.
Scariest thing for me were them eyes in the dark. These were the scenes before we knew it was the angel. I loved not knowing what we were watching. It reminded me of Jeepers Creepers back in the day.
The monologue Erin has when she dies is a masterpiece
just finished it, it was incredible.
When Riley sees the girl he killed on the boat, and then they cut to him burning, that part reminds of of the ending of St. Maude.
I think midnight mass is the craziest thing i've ever watched.
Its so different, its so honest, its so touching, its so deep, its so real, its so heart wrenching...It's the best depiction of faith i've ever seen ! It is definitely Mike Flanagan 's greatest work !

Just finished the season and I enjoyed it overall. I do think some of the monologues could have been cut and maybe make each episode about 43-50 mins instead of over an hour. If you have a short attention span you won’t like this as it is slower paced.

Yea, I zoned out during some of the monologues, they were just way to long for my attention span. I still understood 90% of the story though so 🤷🏾♂️
The only monologue i hate was Pruits in the aa meetings after riley was biten. He was so delusional about religion and the vampire he encountered. Forcing his own belief to riley.
the long conversations about their feelings and beliefs are what its about though, none of it could have been cut. Ive got adhd and still enjoyed every second of it. It seems like it just isnt for you
As someone who has stopped the their vice-grip grasp on the idea of afterlife, I was so afraid of dying because death seemed like the ultimate end. Erin's monologue helped me look at it at a different angle. It was so beautiful.

The way Riley and Erin explain the death, what happens when we die etc, it was just.. poetic. And I kinda agree with them.
Very strongly reminiscent of The Unholy (2021), Needful Things mixed with the Jonestown massacre. I still thoroughly enjoyed this series. There is so much attention to detail as far as the plot and storytelling, and the dialogue is inspiring. It is truly a masterpiece. I binge watched all the episodes, and wished there was more. At the end I was left with a strange feeling of tranquility and peace that lingered for some time. I really can't praise the series enough.

This series gave me everything, Also I must say that first sermon from father Paul made me very emotional. That’s when I knew this series was going to be good!
I had no idea what this series was about but I love your channel so I gave it a go. I was left intrigued so I started the series at 7pm and ended at 2 in the morning. I'm usually in bed 2-3 hours before but I could not stop. The confession/story with the inter-cuts of the wood carvings was amazing. I loved the discussion if mortality and religion combined with supernatural horror. Vampires have long been associated with Christianity but this takes it to the next level
I interpreted Leeza losing her legs again as the moment the angel did actually die, since it happened right at sunrise.
I am glad Leeza can't walk in the end because it means she can die in peace without having to worry about turning into a vampire and killing more innocent people
In some vampire stories, when the head vampire, the one whose blood transforms every one, when he dies the effect of his blood wares off.
That's what I thought happened when Lisa lost the feeling in her legs, that it was a sign that the head vampire, the "angel", had died and the effect of his blood had worn off. Subsequently, that might have also meant that everyone turned by his blood would have been saved if the had waited out his death.
They would've died too, if the main vampire died, because they had to die to come back to life as vampires. They are already dead in the first place.

It took me so long to realize this was a vampire story. Like the Angel isn’t an Angel it’s a vampire. Everyone in the series becomes a vampire. At one point I was just thinking “This is weird, are the becoming angels or are they vampire because this is very reminiscent of vampires.” Makes me want to rewatch knowing that I wasn’t going crazy lol
I think it speaks to how the delusional can rationalize anything (even something as so obviously objectively evil, like a vampire with giant bat wings) into something good if it serves their delusion. If it serves their cause.
The Midnight Mass sermon at the church was about facing death with bravery, which the congregation finally did when they waited for the sunlight while singing in the last episode.
I wanted more than anything for someone to see the angel and be like “yo, that’s a vampire!!!”. I loved it tho.

On the shelves in Riley's room were Stephan King books....I thought that was funny because the series reminded. a little of Salem's Lot....especially the winged creature.... and a little of 30 Days of Night mixed in....
Same I was explaining it to my mom and described it as “sort of like Salem’s Lot, but also very different” lol like that was the only thing I could think to compare it to

Mike Flanagan directed doctor sleep and Stephen king is fan of his and vice versa. I want to see Ari Aster directed a Stephen King movie. I thought IT would've been perfect.
As someone who is a former Christian, almost every episode was triggering. Multiple times throughout the series, characters would quote scripture to justify their actions, beliefs, and words. On one hand, it disgusted me, and on the other, it felt validating of my experience. A few episodes in, as I got a clearer picture of where Flanagan was going, I began to enjoy the ride. I found myself engulfed in these long monologues (from every one of the main cast members) about faith, religion, the afterlife, islamophobia, forgiveness, addiction. And they all intertwined so beautifully.
I cried once the credits rolled for the last episode. It felt like a perfect ending. Personally, I had to sit and sort through a lot of feelings about my own faith. Reflecting upon the immense guilt I still sometimes carry for the harm I most likely inflicted upon others when I was a believer. Feeling pity for the islanders that sought for hope and redemption in a force that they believed to be holy but was clearly malevolent to those outside of the faith (ex: Riley and Hassan). How there's equal importance in forgiving yourself as there is in being forgiven by others (ex: Joe).
Having loyally watched Flanagan's other Netflix shows previously, I believe this show outranks even Hill House itself. This is just my opinion, based on the critique of the show and my personal experience sitting through it.

I understand when you think about it reading the Bible should be a personal experience. Yet we have bible study to interpret it the way the priest/preacher/pastor sees it.

I’m a Christian, and just because scripture can be misinterpreted, twisted, manipulated by Man for evil purposes, that doesn’t make the true message of the bible bad, the point is that Man’s word can’t always be trusted as we are corrupt beings, but Gods word can always be trusted, that’s why discernment is needed to decipher truth from lies. When people don’t understand God and the message of God then they can be easily led astray.

On the angels demise, in many telling of vampire mythology when the head vampire dies, the effects of their power are revoked. So covering the distance to safety with diced wings was not likely and proven by the ash that fell on the kids as he combusted and Lisa's paralysis returned.
I was wondering whether the ashes at the end weren't only the people of Crockett, but also of the Angel who burned in the sun and the ashes were falling from the sky.
Just finished the series. Didn’t even realize this was done by the same person who did the Haunting of Hill House. No wonder I loved it! I’m sure I’m gonna be rewatching it soon. There are so many nuances to this show, and like many, binged watched it with no breaks 🤦🏻♀️
This show was immaculate gave my perspective on life the push it needed. It also shifted my view of the Bevs of the world as necessary for they are the ones that truly test your faith. Not just in a higher power, but in yourself.
They're not really necessary, though. They are a product of a larger broken system. You can learn resilience without having it beaten out of you.

What I’m attempting to say is you can’t have good with out evil. You can’t appreciate or forty light without darkness. Sad but true. That doesn’t mean people should be beaten down either. But a survivor is normally more credible than a bystander.

@@O1OO1O1 im not sure how what I stated earlier is indicative of my current paradigm of reality. Regardless there is something to be said of people that are able to survive the toxicity that is BEV and stand tall. I view BEV as an amalgamation of the difficulties we face on a daily basis. The truth is you will always be faced with tough choices and people that will make you second guess yourself. Life is tough and as you stateD BEV is a Product of a broken system which indicates she is an Integrant of a system no less. This means many like her exist in the world and being able to condition yourself against people like her is invaluable.
@@O1OO1O1 I view all counterparts of a society as necessary. Every one has a part and they play that wether it be bad or good or in between. How you prepare yourself against things that are already in place and will continue to remain after your existence is entirely up to you.
A couple things I noticed:
1. The rat poison scene in episode 6 gave off major Jonestown vibes. Jonestown was a real world event where a pastor/cult leader named Jim Jones convinced 900 people to commit suicide by drinking poison (this is where the phrase “drink the kool aid” comes from).
2. Also, the number 7 appears a lot. There’s a Se7en poster in Riley’s room, there’s 7 deadly sins, 7 sacraments (such as communion), 7 episodes, and if I remember right there are even 7 people who escape the church at the end of episode 6. What this means I don’t know, but I thought it was fascinating.
I didn't even think of the poster, I just thought he had good taste in Movies lol
My theory after the first episode was that each episode and each of the main characters corresponds to one of the deadly sins but I couldn't quite make it work in my head.

It is basically the reverse of the Bible. Warren and Leeza as Adam and Eve but they're the last two, the divine conception but Erin lost the baby instead of gaining it, and the Angel is the Devil. The show has so many amazing layers. One of the best really
