Dr. Yang has visited in Houston frequently, and besides Master Bolt's amazing teachings, Dr. Yang's seminars are wonderful and thorough, including the martial aspects of Yang tai chi. It is a true honor to know this man, and to see/feel him in action. Thank you sir for all that you have given the rest of us!
The reason why people discredit tai chi is because not enough people study the combat applications of tai chi. You don’t fight like you’re doing a kata, but utilize the correct movement at the correct time for maximum effect.

37 years ago I took Tai Chi Chuan, now I am 58 I would love to take it up again. The system really works when I was jumped in South Boston it got me out of trouble without even thinking about it, everything came naturally to me.

Who did you learn from because I do not believe that simply training the form will allow one to respond properly in combat without a true transmission (the spiritual side). However, because someone has trained the form, the practical application will "magically" appear through the true transmission. I know because this happened to me where someone tried to grab my arm and I instantly knew to pin it to my belly and he immediately was mine -- the thing was I was never taught the practical application for that common position! It was the true transmission that allowed me to "know" what to do because I had practiced the form; its like a gift, a very helpful and valuable gift. :D

@Kamatari Honjo This video shows one or 2 applications per form, which is incredibly limiting as the postures/forms of Taiji are "seed forms" and there are many applications. Most decent instructors tend to shy away from applications as most people aren't real "fighters" and aren't learning it as a martial art. No good instructor will lead you to believe that this is the kick ass all winning martial art. It isn't. You have to train functionally to fight - sparring, drills etc and the highest percentage moves are the proven strikes, wrestling, BJJ. What Taiji does teach you is: Body Mechanics/Posture/Kinetic Chain, Balance, Relaxation/Overcoming Fight or Flight, Mind/Body Connection. I challenge you to find a fighter who doesn't value these attributes! What you will actually find in the forms are many common wrestling moves - a simple arm drag in "Grasp Sparrows Tail" for example, plenty of Sprawl type techniques in Chen Style. There are only so many effective techniques to strike or take down an opponent and you will find them all in the Taiji form. In reality the forms themselves aren't as important as the principles behind them, the body mechanics of the kinetic chain and how to develop power through relaxation and torque through the waist (boxing). This is stuff that modern sport science has only really developed in the last 50 years or so, but these TMA were doing it hundreds of years earlier. Yes things have moved on, there is no focus on ground techniques but if you have the time to study this art you will develop some great skills. You will be harder to take down and you will have heavy hands. Now referring to the guy that said he got jumped even without using a form or application of any sort, the first thing you need to do not to tense up otherwise you can't react quickly. After that whatever happens is down to luck if you don't know how do deal with it, but step one is staying relaxed, keeping a good posture and not falling over.

Dr yang jwing ming..is a legend..I remember how excited I used to get every time I saw him on the cover of "inside kung-fu magazine" or "combat magazine"..I just couldn't wait to read his articles on tcm ,tai chi and chi gong.those day's I was into wing Chun..and 7star mantis..now I'm into tai chi and internal arts..no doubt I also have his bagua book(the blue cover) and tai ji sword manual..in my martial arts book collections...he's so inspiring..thank you sir for guiding us all on the "way"..much love and god bless you...😍

respect to Dr. Yang. 1994 i found one of his books (Chi Kung Health & Martial Arts). thanks to his clear explanation, i learned chi transport easily. after that, my general alertness and sensitivity improved and i stayed calm. until today, his explanation and demonstration is the clearest i have seen in english language.

I take Tai Chi classes to help me with strength and balance because I have reactive arthritis in all of my joints. My teacher has been teaching us the martial arts reasons behind each movement of the form because so many of us in the class are so vulnerable and could not run away from an attack if we tried. I love the meditative aspect but I think learning to use the movements to protect oneself is vital if you have a mobility handicap. Next I think he will teach us how to read the vulnerability of an attacker. That is probably months down the road. But I really do appreciate Tai Chi and what it has to offer.
There are no belts in Tai Chi. My teacher has been practicing it and Kung Fu for 65 years. He is a Master, but he refuses to accept that label. I've yet to see any belts. In fact, a Tai Chi Gee doesn't have any place for a belt.
The beauty of tai chi is that anyone can do it, it dosen't slowly destroy the body but rather builds it up and preserves what you have. I wish it were more popular where i am.
@wade i disagree, with external arts careful technique can extend the time you can practice, but theres only so much beating the body can take before your age starts to catch up with you. That toe you broke during sparing, that shoulder you wrenched during a throw you probably shouldn't have tried on that big dude, that elbow that got hyperextended when you took a little too long to tap out. It all adds up over time, And starts to catch up with you around your mid-forties. Thats not saying that one must stop, (i know a retired boxer who practices with the speed bag in his 60s) but if you take a guy who's been training in Taekwondo his entire life and compare him to a life long Tai Chi practitioner at age 60 there is a profound difference.

He has written a number of very detailed books on Kung-fu ,Tai Chi,Hsing-i and he collaborated on a Bagua book With master Liang shou yuo. He knows alot about chi and the body.
I recently bought his Tai Chi martial applications. I started do understand what I have learned years ago. Here in Brazil we do not have detailed books written by our masters. Thank you so much Dr. Yang! I will buy more books.

If you want to teach them a form of cardio and stretching than sure. But fighting? Throw any tai chi master at me and I'll beat him. Hands, kicks, grappling, any one or all three. Anyone that tries to tell you Tai Chi is a fighting art is selling you a plate of shit.
Spent 3 yrs studying Tai Chi but had to stop after college and work. It is very effective and the instructor could very effortlessly best any movement even tho he was 10 inches and 70 lbs lighter than me. Amazing.

Tai Chi Quan is a wrestling, graphling martial-art. The governments and people should do better marketing, funding and do more tournaments to protect their culture, before these martial-arts go extinct. We need to teach in school and have tournaments. Tai Chi school also needs to do sparring to sharpen their wrestling skills so people can apply in real combat.
No, taiji quan is not a wrestling or grappling martial art. Even if you can use qina and different types of locks, you also strike, punch, and kick very violently to break bones, articulations, organs, and different parts of the body such as eardrums.
@@Supermomo2007 Not really. Being efficient in fights with taiji requires a high skill. Do not expect to be able to fight in a few months. You should see it as as long-term practice that will slowly build your strength without damaging your health. And it is very difficult to find a taiji teacher able to teach how to fight. Most taiji adepts have no martial bases. On the other hand, if you find the right teacher, taiji can be incredibly efficient in fights.
I have Dr Yang's material (all his DVDs and books on Taiji actually) and they are truly excellent, clearly explained and allow you to train by yourself if that is all you can manage. My only suggestion is that I wish Dr Yang would deal with Taiji applications that deal with the most common street attacks (such as a sucker punch, round house or swing punch, big wild haymakers....etc). The Taiji martial applications DVD all assume a push hands situation, that if you really think about it can be adapted, but that would just really help people visualize and have some techniques for punches etc. However I do admit that Dr Yang does deal with this moreso in the book that goes with the DVD but still, this would be really awesome. However I totally recommend Dr Yang's Taichi materials!!
@@brittscott4673true. Tai chichuan and teaches you how to block, redirect the energy and also strike. As well it teaches you to knock the person to the ground and add joint locks. There are infinite possibile responses.
Tai Chi is a beautiful art, but practitioners need to face the modern bitter truth that it is NOT a fighting art. Perhaps one day, a LONG time ago; however in this day and age, it is an irresponsible mischaracterization to make any reference to real world fighting. You risk getting people hurt, by convincing them that this may be used in a self defense situation. Something is better than nothing is the only adage that Tai Chi may rise to in its level of effectiveness. Please keep it for what it is; an AMAZING internal art, that every person in the world would benefit from. I am sure that my opinion may anger, as a martial artist of 40 years, I'd submit that it's a valid discussion. I've practiced Tai Chi, still do personally from time to time. I can only appreciate it for what it is, an internal art. After 40 years, it'd be easy to write a book of opinions and observations from the 40 years. I'm open to being wrong.
I don’t want to minimise the skill of those masters nor in any way tarnish the image of taiji but whenever I see a martial art demonstration I wonder how effective it is against an attacker who, contrary to the demonstration partner, neither knows what’s coming (which usually makes him/her anticipate a safe and painless fall) nor cooperates. There’s been a few videos about aikido which seem to demonstrate it’s a lot less effective than what I expected it to.
I show others how to use Tai chi in combat, once you understand the basics it becomes easier to understand the exercise and it's combat application ☯️🙏.
It is interesting to study the martial aspect but almost everyone who does Tai Chi doesn’t have any actual fighting experiences. It’s like studying the techniques involved in a tennis swing but never actually playing a match
Fighting is the dumbest way to resolve a conflict. Studying martial arts is like studying violin or oil painting, a classical art for self improvement.
I love cloudy hands but I was never taught the elbow down version, only the elbow up which requires an additional step of twisting; I would really like to learn the elbow down way, its much quicker and easier. :D

First you learn the techniques, that's this video or class. Then you train and spar for a few years in class. Dr Yang discusses this on the DVD you are watching the preview for.
In a fight, it is ultimately your conditioning versus your opponents conditioning. If you rely just on technique or just on bulk or just on speed then you have already lost. The one who wins the fight and is considered the strongest is the one who has mastered balance in all those aspects. It is called a martial 'art' not a tutorial on how to kick 50 men in the face in 2 minutes without them being able to breathe.. Tai-chi or tai chi chuan is meant as a point of balance. Yin & Yang. Heaven & Earth, passivity and aggression. No one said it was meant to be anything more then that If you do not care about Taoism or the philosophies that such an art can bring you then join a boxing gym instead of trying to discredit others in what they enjoy. I do not participate in Yoga or Taichi but that doesn't mean I rant about how effective or ineffective someone's "way" is

I seek the older understanding but by learning to make Yin strong. 6 element i made system pointing energy more clear then any seen by by self. Why it works simple i know what they needed to be able to do. The way you know you learned Tai Ji right, you never fell you do muths, and there are no focus on Fight it self, but energy it self as one. (In case well come to the first step) Yang can easy be over do.

Are there sparring classes for Tai Chi? Don't you need actual fighting practice to develop your Tai Chi as a fighting art? So, would you develop say, a Tai Chi for MMA video?' One that shows how to defend against the quick strikes and clinches of a boxer or a Muay Thai guy and also grapple with Ju-Jitsu people? I appreciate that Tai Chi has stand up grappling but, obviously being a self defense art it would include fighting on the ground as well. So that, we may get up to get away or get up in order to continue fighting. Would YMAA produce a video that instructs us on something like that?

If you are boxing at the moment, you will come to realize pretty soon, that taiji quan is a totally different way of handling your sparring partner, or opponent, should it come to this. And while everybody can throw a (more or less aimed and effectual) punch, it will take you months to settle into the basics of taiji quan, and years until it starts being of any use in terms of self defence. That's a first thing you should consider. If anyone tells you otherwise, it's a scam school. As for learning proper taiji quan, that is highly dependant on where you live, how many schools you have to choose from, where the respective teachers learned, etc.
I wouldn't count on learning practical application in your first year of tai chi. I also learned boxing first and you get skills you can test right away with boxing. I have found that tai chi makes a great bridge between striking and grappling. Good luck finding a teacher who even knows the combatives though.
Learning Tai chi starts out with very slow movements which builds strength and coordination. Once moves have been practiced perfectly their use whether it be for Marshall or exercise purposes comes into play instinctively. A movement practiced a thousand times results in very fluid and very fast responses to others movements.
Would really love to see them actually fight against an untrained fighter and a trainer fighter. It's easy to demonstrate with a cooperative partner, but in real life no one is gonna wait for you to finish your thing. Not to mention, possible physical strength difference, because trained fighters usually have strength training, while most tai chi practitioners dont
@@DamsiaDeka Probably easily overwhelmed by a trained fighter with strength and actual fight experience but fine against untrained fighters. I don't think someone who practices Tai Chi forms but never actually fights should expect to beat anyone who actually fights. Traditional, martially-focused Tai Chi training definitely needs to include strength training and sparring. It's not magic!
The main problem is that no one pressure tests the material any more, and it's really hard to find anyone that's serious about Tai Chi. For example, when I teach, almost EVERY one that comes to me is only interested in waving their hands around. They don't have the patience for proper breathing and posture, and they are flabbergasted when I want to have them practice the techniques on each other. The material is VERY practical for self defense, but finding someone that is willing to put the hard work into it is almost impossible in today's society.

Spent 3 yrs studying Tai Chi but had to stop after college and work. It is very effective and the instructor could very effortlessly best any movement even tho he was 10 inches and 70 lbs lighter than me. Amazing.

Is Dr Yang Jwing MING YMAA RETREAT CENTER in Northern California still existing? I used to read about him and his teachings years ago.

Tai Chi Quan is a wrestling, graphling martial-art. The governments and people should do better marketing, funding and do more tournaments to protect their culture, before these martial-arts go extinct. We need to teach in school and have tournaments. Tai Chi school also needs to do sparring to sharpen their wrestling skills so people can apply in real combat.

No, taiji quan is not a wrestling or grappling martial art. Even if you can use qina and different types of locks, you also strike, punch, and kick very violently to break bones, articulations, organs, and different parts of the body such as eardrums.
@@Supermomo2007 Not really. Being efficient in fights with taiji requires a high skill. Do not expect to be able to fight in a few months. You should see it as as long-term practice that will slowly build your strength without damaging your health. And it is very difficult to find a taiji teacher able to teach how to fight. Most taiji adepts have no martial bases. On the other hand, if you find the right teacher, taiji can be incredibly efficient in fights.

Tai Chi Chuan means Grand Ultimate Fist and it is a Kung Fu style practiced slowly and used quickly for self defense.
Movement center practice very slowly later on become movements that are very very fast, precise and effective.

I have Dr Yang's material (all his DVDs and books on Taiji actually) and they are truly excellent, clearly explained and allow you to train by yourself if that is all you can manage. My only suggestion is that I wish Dr Yang would deal with Taiji applications that deal with the most common street attacks (such as a sucker punch, round house or swing punch, big wild haymakers....etc). The Taiji martial applications DVD all assume a push hands situation, that if you really think about it can be adapted, but that would just really help people visualize and have some techniques for punches etc. However I do admit that Dr Yang does deal with this moreso in the book that goes with the DVD but still, this would be really awesome. However I totally recommend Dr Yang's Taichi materials!!

@@brittscott4673true. Tai chichuan and teaches you how to block, redirect the energy and also strike. As well it teaches you to knock the person to the ground and add joint locks. There are infinite possibile responses.
Tai Chi is a beautiful art, but practitioners need to face the modern bitter truth that it is NOT a fighting art. Perhaps one day, a LONG time ago; however in this day and age, it is an irresponsible mischaracterization to make any reference to real world fighting. You risk getting people hurt, by convincing them that this may be used in a self defense situation. Something is better than nothing is the only adage that Tai Chi may rise to in its level of effectiveness.
Please keep it for what it is; an AMAZING internal art, that every person in the world would benefit from. I am sure that my opinion may anger, as a martial artist of 40 years, I'd submit that it's a valid discussion. I've practiced Tai Chi, still do personally from time to time. I can only appreciate it for what it is, an internal art. After 40 years, it'd be easy to write a book of opinions and observations from the 40 years. I'm open to being wrong.

Tai Chi is equally valid as a martial art or as moving meditation for health.
I don’t want to minimise the skill of those masters nor in any way tarnish the image of taiji but whenever I see a martial art demonstration I wonder how effective it is against an attacker who, contrary to the demonstration partner, neither knows what’s coming (which usually makes him/her anticipate a safe and painless fall) nor cooperates. There’s been a few videos about aikido which seem to demonstrate it’s a lot less effective than what I expected it to.

It is interesting to study the martial aspect but almost everyone who does Tai Chi doesn’t have any actual fighting experiences. It’s like studying the techniques involved in a tennis swing but never actually playing a match
Fighting is the dumbest way to resolve a conflict. Studying martial arts is like studying violin or oil painting, a classical art for self improvement.

I've been on the receiving end of cloudy hands. It's unbelievable just how powerful it is. A video cannot do it justice.
I love cloudy hands but I was never taught the elbow down version, only the elbow up which requires an additional step of twisting; I would really like to learn the elbow down way, its much quicker and easier. :D

First you learn the techniques, that's this video or class. Then you train and spar for a few years in class. Dr Yang discusses this on the DVD you are watching the preview for.
In a fight, it is ultimately your conditioning versus your opponents conditioning. If you rely just on technique or just on bulk or just on speed then you have already lost. The one who wins the fight and is considered the strongest is the one who has mastered balance in all those aspects. It is called a martial 'art' not a tutorial on how to kick 50 men in the face in 2 minutes without them being able to breathe..
Tai-chi or tai chi chuan is meant as a point of balance.

Are there sparring classes for Tai Chi? Don't you need actual fighting practice to develop your Tai Chi as a fighting art? So, would you develop say, a Tai Chi for MMA video?'
One that shows how to defend against the quick strikes and clinches of a boxer or a Muay Thai guy and also grapple with Ju-Jitsu people?
I appreciate that Tai Chi has stand up grappling but, obviously being a self defense art it would include fighting on the ground as well.
So that, we may get up to get away or get up in order to continue fighting.

I'm a younger person and I wanna take this for a new self defence I do boxing ATM but wanna try this everyone says it's just old person thing to move around don't know where I can learn it as self defence
If you are boxing at the moment, you will come to realize pretty soon, that taiji quan is a totally different way of handling your sparring partner, or opponent, should it come to this. And while everybody can throw a (more or less aimed and effectual) punch, it will take you months to settle into the basics of taiji quan, and years until it starts being of any use in terms of self defence. That's a first thing you should consider. If anyone tells you otherwise, it's a scam school.
As for learning proper taiji quan, that is highly dependant on where you live, how many schools you have to choose from, where the respective teachers learned, etc.
I wouldn't count on learning practical application in your first year of tai chi. I also learned boxing first and you get skills you can test right away with boxing. I have found that tai chi makes a great bridge between striking and grappling. Good luck finding a teacher who even knows the combatives though.

Tai Chi as practiced generally is slow motion aerobics for geriatrics. It's time they start practicing the fighting aspects to make it real
Learning Tai chi starts out with very slow movements which builds strength and coordination. Once moves have been practiced perfectly their use whether it be for Marshall or exercise purposes comes into play instinctively. A movement practiced a thousand times results in very fluid and very fast responses to others movements.
Yang Jwing Ming is one of the best master. He gives new life toTaijiquan.
This guy is also a kickass wu shu practioner too.

Would really love to see them actually fight against an untrained fighter and a trainer fighter. It's easy to demonstrate with a cooperative partner, but in real life no one is gonna wait for you to finish your thing. Not to mention, possible physical strength difference, because trained fighters usually have strength training, while most tai chi practitioners dont

@@DamsiaDeka Probably easily overwhelmed by a trained fighter with strength and actual fight experience but fine against untrained fighters. I don't think someone who practices Tai Chi forms but never actually fights should expect to beat anyone who actually fights. Traditional, martially-focused Tai Chi training definitely needs to include strength training and sparring. It's not magic!
The main problem is that no one pressure tests the material any more, and it's really hard to find anyone that's serious about Tai Chi. For example, when I teach, almost EVERY one that comes to me is only interested in waving their hands around. They don't have the patience for proper breathing and posture, and they are flabbergasted when I want to have them practice the techniques on each other.
The material is VERY practical for self defense, but finding someone that is willing to put the hard work into it is almost impossible in today's society.
