If you think emus are dangerous, check out their colourful cousins, the cassowaries! It's they who are actually considered to be the most dangerous birds in the world. Yes they're found in Australia (and PNG iirc) of course!

That young man's complete composure while walking away from a large brown bear is stuff of legends. He has nerves of steel and control over his fight/flight response. His dad, assumingly that's dad with the camera phone, is the same. Parental instincts is a major drive in any adult. Kudos.

Very much admiring the 12 year old with nerves of steel, and a good memory for youtube videos! Ditto for the group of tourists who remembered to make themselves small and avoid eye contact when a silverback gorilla came strolling along...and over...them.
You have to remember that the fight-or-flight instinct is very difficult to overcome, simply because it is like a switch. Being able to consciously override it takes a lot of self-control and strong nerves.

Sharks appearing a few feet from you is the main reason I fear the ocean :)

    • @JaggedBird
      @JaggedBird 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Fun fact: we are actually too fatty for a shark's diet! "[Sharks] are famous for chowing down on humans" is a false statement on the narrator's part. They don't see us as a meal, rather a threat. Sharks eat threats that aren't hazardous to do so with sometimes after killing them. Some ocean animals do that. It's why shark attacks occur.
The writer of Jaws has apologised for the misconception and realises the harm it has given these majestic dangerous fish. They aren't our biggest enemy in the ocean long as you leave them be or are in a cage with a competent supervisor. Shark cage diving is safer than you think but don't get cocky. They aren't a threat as long as you don't make them feel threatened or are bleeding. You'll be grand otherwise

When I was a kid, my dog , my mom, older brother, myself & our abuser went hiking 2-3 times a month from late spring to early fall. When I say hiking, I mean trails up the Rocky Mountains that were, at times, VERY difficult & took 2-4 days to complete, & 98% time we never saw another person. I absolutely loved it! BUT... one night after we had finished setting up our tents & collecting wood for the fire ... this blood chilling scream of a woman rang out. We all froze. Another shrike I shot up & my mother nearly dislocated my shoulder yanking me back down on the log we we'd been sitting on & covered my mouth. This was somewhere around 1985-87 so there weren't cellphones of any kind. After the longest 5 minutes of my life. I finally whispered "Should we go help her?". Our abuser released my dog's snout, chuckled & said, "You were right to be afraid & be silent, but, not for what you THOUGHT you heard. Yes, it sounds like a screaming woman, but it's not. THAT is the sound of a mountain lioness letting EVERY mountain lion in earshot know that she is HORNY! My mom & I both laughed & my brother just shook his head in disgust as he turned his Walkman back on & put on his headphones. If I didn't have our dog in the tent, I don't think I would have been able to sleep. 😱😱😱

When I was 8 and my brother was 3 , my neighbor had this big putbull named Knots. Somedays when me and my brother was walking home from school , getting of the bus to our long driveway , sometimes Knots would in the beside the trees near our house and if the door was locked , we would have to wait 30 minutes for for or dad to come home with the large pit bull in the distance. We were both scared and my little brother would cry until mom or dad came home. @14:00 or so, when the guy was being stalked by the cougar mom, he did some of the things right. #1 He didn't turn your back-- Check. #2 He backed away slowly-- Check. The only thing he did wrong and I wouldn't recommend (if you can control yourself), is DO NOT yell, as this is also perceived as a sign of aggression. So keep your voice DOWN. (I, myself, tend to elicit a stream of non-stop expletives when in a panic; but usually as a whisper around large animals... at least that's what happened when I came across a bear.) And most especially do not yell AT the cougar. That's probably why she followed him so far. BTW, if she had crouched down, as if she was preparing to spring at him, then he should have rolled himself into a ball, covering his head and neck with his arms, as quickly as possible. Whether it's a bear or a cougar, that's your only hope if they attack. It won't stop the attack but it will protect your most vulnerable areas. If done properly it keeps your jugular & carotid arteries and skull covered as much as possible.
Instead of yelling, IF you have a very great amount of control (not even sure I could do it in the moment), try to sing softly. That sounds insane, I know. But the old saying, "music has charms to soothe the savage beast," has some basis in reality. It is because animals have a keener sense of hearing and-- you know that funny feeling you get when a marching band goes by and it kind of makes your insides quiver? Yeah. Same thing happens in animals, only more so because their hearing is so much more acute than ours. So it stops them, literally, in their tracks. If you cannot sing (not surprising in that situation) but you have soothing tracks on your phone, you might start playing something like that. Not, as that one woman did, playing heavy metal. She was lucky. More like Brahms' Lullaby or Amazing Grace... something like that.

I once was decorating my house, and we were shopping for some plants. My brother was grabbing a cactus he found, and a couple seconds later he saw a caterpillar on it. Little did he know that it was a puss caterpillar, one of the most poisonous caterpillars in the world. Needless to say, we got a different cactus immediately.

If you understand nature, and how it works, you have absolutely nothing to be afraid of. Most of these animals would rather leave you alone then attack you. Most often people are attacked because they do something that makes the animal think it’s in danger. But here’s the rub, we have to go against our natural instinct, and learn how to stay calm, because if you panic, a lot of animals will pick up on that, see you as a threat and go after you, but if you stay calm, stand your ground, and totally ignore the animal, while keeping them in your line of sight, most times you’ll be OK, I learned that the hard way. We had a cottage about three hours north of Toronto where I live, every once in a while if it was a very dry spring and summer, the Bears would run out of food, and being incredibly intelligent and resourceful, they could pick up the scent of food from all the cottages nearby. I had a bear literally 5 feet from the deck of the cottage, just looking at me, because we were barbecuing and it obviously picked up on the smell. But I remembered what my scout leader had told me, not to react, to seem as passive and calm as possible, and most times the bear will ignore you, and that’s exactly what happened. Unlike my parents who ran into the cottage, leaving me on the deck by myself, way to go mom and dad! That same bear came back several times that year, so I named him Ben, And he became my little buddy, well, big buddy, but never once did I ever feel threatened, if anything the total opposite, I felt safe when he was around. After a while he knew I was no threat, and I actually would feed him, because I knew there was no food in the forest due to drought. I know you’re not supposed to feed wild animals, but I was young, and I felt so bad because I could see this bear was losing a lot of weight over the weeks, and believe it or not, I could tell he was appreciative. He didn’t attack me, he just stood there with this big sad look on his face, but once I fed him, he would just look at me as to say thanks, and walk away calmly. To be off topic for a second..I was a weird kid, but I’m so glad I had the best of both worlds, because not many city kids would know what to do in the same situation, but I grew up in the city when school was in session, but I lived at the cottage all summer long, because I loved it so much, and never wanted to go home. We had countless families of raccoons living under the cottage for many years, each spring a new litter would show up, my mom has pictures of me when I was about five, feeding them by hand, I used to give them names, and actually look at them like pets, but I always understood that they were wild animals, and I always kept that in the back of my mind. I wasn’t stupid either, I knew enough to keep that respect, and never let down my guard, just in case, but overall, I think I knew more animals than I did people up there, and the day my parents sold it when I was 16, I cried for weeks, because I’m now 53, and I still miss it every day of my life. They sold it because it was just too much work having to work full-time, both of them, and take care of a home and a cottage, not to mention to kids, eventually, enough was enough they said, but why did they have to sell it when I got my drivers license? I think they were afraid I was going to live there permanently, and I didn’t want that happening. I absolutely love nature, but I also love city life, but it was so nice to have the best of both worlds at my disposal, what really hurts is the people that bought our cottage, that my father literally built from the ground up, tore it down to build some gaudy monstrosity with 10 bedrooms, that’s not a cottage, that’s a house! No that most cottages cost more than a house in the city, there is no way I could ever afford to buy one now but I was forced to live on permanent long-term disability thanks to cancer and Crohns…. So I do the next best thing, I rent a cottage every year, sometimes more than once a year in the summer, and we bring the whole family with us, just to live some of the happiest times of our lives. There’s nothing more beautiful than waking up early in the morning, hearing the soft gentle breeze blown through the pines, the sun beams reflection off the still lake waters, watching the mist rise off the lake, broken only by fish jumping out to catch the small flies just above the waters surface….standing there with coffee mug in hand, with not a soul, or a sound in sight, and breathing in the fresh forest air as the morning dew slow evaporates off the ground to welcome the new day..ahhhh….paradise. I yearn for it so badly I could cry. But after 37 surgeries, nearly dying 4 times, having less then 5% of my GI tract left (it was intestinal cancer) and not being allowed to work ever again, money is a thing of the past..anyone have a cottage they don’t want anymore?😫😫😫😫😫

I certainly can relate to you TJ in Toronto. I am very close to 57 , I also have been on long term disability from a spine injury and 3 surgeries at age 40. I had both worlds growing up as well. I stayed at my grandparents house in the summers while growing up. They had 183 acres of what I would say some of the best land in the state of Pennsylvania. My passion was hunting and fishing on their land and I never missed a summer there till I graduated high school at 17 and went directly into a mill to work. But I still did all my hunting and fishing there seasonally till I was 38 and my grandmother passed so the 8 children could not wait to sell that land because loggers and National Feul wanted the land so they all got to split a considerable amount of money and that was the end of hunting and fishing for me because my injury came just after all that. I miss that land, the smell, the critters and Deer and pheasants, grouse you name it. I still hurt from that, we had a huge family on my Dads side and we all were close. My grandfather kept a decent size apple orchard where we had several huge family parties every summer . My dad passed in 2017 and nobody talks to each other anymore. My heart is saddened deeply over that, I miss my family and it's just me and my 2nd son and my 7 year old grandson now and I wish so badly I could give my grandson a childhood like I had but there's that cash missing thing you spoke of going on for me also. Lol. So I tell him my stories and hope like hell he takes something out of them because the young are getting ,well , ridiculously selfish and their morals and manners seem to be missing as well. I pray for mankind because we don't have very kind men anymore. I think you and I were very lucky even tho we probably think we got it bad now. Take care and God bless brother.

@@jamesshaffer206 wow, thanks for sharing, you and I have a lot in common, including the big families, my dad only has two brothers, but my mother comes from 12 siblings, but just like your family, money got in the way, when my grandparents passed away, none of my mothers siblings would speak to each other, same goes for my father‘s brothers, all they did was fight over money, but in the meantime all I remember is the love and the fun, and those wonderful memories that we grew up with. It’s so true that there’s so much selfishness today, it was never like that when we were kids, greed has always been there, but never to this extent. There are times I wish to God I could go back to my childhood and stay there permanently, because society has turned not just my family but many families into antisocial bickering childish isolationists, just like you, leaving me with my spouse, one son, my two nephews that we raised (my narcissistic materialistic sister tries to ruin every single family gathering, because my grandparents didn’t leave her enough money, according to her, so we have to cut her out of the picture completely to save our sanity, it’s so frustrating and hurtful, but we had no choice, better no communication, then constant fighting and arguing) and my parents, who are actually both still alive and in there late 80’s (longevity runs on both sides of the family, most people live to their late 90s at least). But my parents are too weak, even though they live in their own place, I pretty much take care of them, point being nothing is like it used to be, and it never will be again because of all this arguing over my grandparents money, because both of them on my mother and father side had quite a bit, and it just tears me apart that people choose money over family. In the end, while necessary to live, material things mean nothing, we have to surrender everything we spent our whole life accumulating once were gone, the only thing we have is the love for my family and friends, but people don’t even have that anymore, because they have the whole thing backwards, and place money ahead of love, it’s just also saddening and disheartening. But if it means anything, you’ve gained a friend today. Take care, and thanks!

The young boy and the brown bear. As the video demonstrates, some people can't put down the camera. Interesting and exciting though it be, it should, in my opinion, be left to describing an unbelievable occurrence instead of recording it. The attention of catching the moment is a distraction to total concentration of getting away safely. Great video. Brave boy.

I am pretty sure the guy with the camera was also being careful to not make any sudden movements and was walking backwards. Turning around or putting down the camera might have been seen as a "sudden movement", so don't rag on the guy too hard. He also didn't want to take his eyes off his son or the bear, and I don't blame him.

    Awesome Clips
But I really don't agree with Animals being caged like the Gorrilla or Running of the Bulls even the Emus and also the Snakes being kept as pets the reason they can be so aggressive is from being locked up and not been able to roam as they would naturally in their native habitats
You would be aggressive and even feel like doing damage to someone who had you locked up in an area smaller than your freedom to roam intuition as if you were being kept as a display for those who don't truly care for your wellbeing 💯
