I have worked with at least one of the Hollywood guys that had worked on some of the Star Wars, but more on Iron Man. He worked on building a set for a movie, and would actually go to a local thrift store looking for as much junk as he could find. A calculator that had a printer in it when glued to a barber shop chair that has been flipped upside down is now a pilot's control module. Cheap plastic paint trays spray painted with a metallic like paint then glued to particle board is now the ships blast armor (looked better when the paint tray had grooves in it to help the paint off your brush). The back half of a kid's golf caddy painted with a more metallic type paint, glued to a wall is now an air tank. It was pretty amazing to walk through this set and realizing that the stuff that was used was really cheap garbage made to look expensive. It was AWESOME!! I miss that job so much!
I've worked on a few big films including The Force Awakens. The full-sized Millennium Falcon model (actually, only the front half was built) that was in the scenes on the planet D'Qar was decorated in white plastic plumbing parts. I spent a few hours standing next to that model, occasionally leaning up against it whilst waiting for set changes.
The prop guys were actually pretty inventive with some of the stuff they were creating.

When "Life of Brian" by Monty Python was being filmed in Tunisia, the lead star, Graham Chapman, was the staff physician when not on camera. He mainly treated dysentery and scorpion stings, so I can dig how Harrison Ford must've felt.
Don't forget, too, that Tom Cruise often stood on boxes while filming 'cause he's so short. At least Michael J Fox owned his shortness!

I read that John Rhys-Davies (Gimli in LOTR) was allergic to the prosthetics they made him wear which is why it sometimes appears as though one of his eyes is squinting, but he stuck it out anyway. Didnt they film the three movies over the course of 2 years? Thats a long time to put up with allergies like that! Props to JRD!!
That is covered thoroughly in the Behind The Scenes material for the movies. They would often use stand-ins so that he could get some rest.

He was almost killed in Ivanhoe. A chain mail he was wearing started to contract, suffocating him like a snake.
I played a cop on TV for two seasons, and most of our lines were easy enough to remember, that we'd shoot and move on, but we were also allowed artistic merit to make the character more realistic. For long sides, we would glance down at them. David Caruso was notorious for reading his sides in CSI Miami. That's why he was always looking down.
That's interesting. Caruso does look down a lot. NYPD Blue, loved him in that! And if I were a director, I'd let the actors be free to act like they're not acting.
Some of us plebeians don't know what a "long side" is, BTW.
@@fman4234 Oh sorry, lol. Sides are what you would call lines. So long sides are lengthy dialogues. That's why he's reading. Notice how long his dialogue is.
Here in the South, we have a bit more leeway, but the stuff that comes out of NY or CA is to the letter. When I was on Atlanta Homicide, we sometimes had to rework scenes because a character was missing. We'd ad lib the whole scene to make it work, and usually get it one take because it was "real." It was a lot of fun.

@@fman4234 First thing I ever saw hm in was "First Blood." Some people find their niche early, others have to try a lot and even make names on both TV and silver screens. I was typecast as a cop because I was, so I played the part very well. I was lucky; I landed Series Regular (opening credits) with my second speaking role, but most actors don't find it that quickly, so they try various venues. I literally went for an audition for a scene, and they created a role for me. I got to name him and everything, LOL.
As for his being difficult to work with, IDK. Stallone, Bruce Willis and Mandy Patinkin are all rumored to be dicks on set, but the few big names I worked with, like Michael Rooker and Rick Schroeder were nice. Mel Gibson is as well. A long time ago, when I got my first book contract, someone advised me to never forget who I was or where I came from. I carried this over to acting. Without fans, you're nothing. "You want your pic taken with me? Of course I have some time." And it wasn't fake either. I was always flattered when someone wanted to talk. But some people let it go to their heads.

Yeah, it is important to underline more people do this. I don't blame any. Altough nowdays they use a ear peace and are "feeded" with the lines, as a TV host is with cues and info. NEW WAY TO ACT ON FILM? I think so... And by one, I have to say that I am OK with it. I want a good performance. Memorizing lines and lines of text will become something from the past... and performances can have that FIRST TIME FEELING from it, that is almost always the best take.

Another thing that happened in candy man was that to get the entranced reaction from Virginia Madison, the director hired an actual hypnotist to hypnotize her. The director would then use a key word to bring her back into a trance like state for shoots. This continued until one day Virginia forgot an entire day of shooting and the no longer consented to being hypnotized. 14:19

The early days of the cinema were filled with things that today we would never do. It's amazing what a little bit of knowledge and time can do to perspective.
The Wizard of Oz is such an incredible movie... but that's mainly just the fact it was even made, because it had so many issues, problems, deaths and injuries. It's a horrible story, so the fact that something so good came out of it is pretty remarkable.

The first, so called, found footage film was Cannibal Holocaust.
It was banned in the UK for being too graphic.
Speaking of Star Wars props, it's pretty well known that the communicator Quigonn used in Episode 1 was a handle from a ladies shaving razor.

For "The Conqueror," there is a video that did a deep dive into whether or not radiation was to blame for the deaths. It found that the ages and cancers that people died were of a normal percentage for the time. Especially for people like John Wayne who smoked cigars and drank alcohol much more than was considered normal for even that time. What I want to know is, why did they use real locks on the tank for Isla’s stunt? They could have attached the chains on her wrists to Nothing(!), and the locks on the lid didn’t have to actually lock. If something went wrong, which it did, she could have instantly bailed. And they could have used a safeword signal to get her out.
Star Trek was famous for repurposing everyday objects, for instance one of Dr. McCoy’s instruments was a salt or pepper shaker.

John Wayne also smoked like a chimney, drank like a fish, and ate large amounts of particularly health-questionable foods. He'd already had a lung removed from cancer, so who knows what should be blamed for his eventual demise.

One of the first notable "found-footage" movies ever made, if not the actual first, was Cannibal Holocaust from 1980. The Blair Witch producers took the idea from that movie. And it is way more horrifying than The Blair Witch. It is considered one of the most brutal and unsettling movies ever made.
Didn't the people who made Cannibal Holocaust have to prove it was just a scripted movie to avoid being charged with crimes? People actually thought the killings depicted were real.

It is true, He was facing many charges for their deaths.That's why the producers of Blair Witch made their cast hide. They were trying to achieve the same outcome and controversy for their protect, but it wasn't as impactful as the Cannibal Holocaust.
@@venusknowme1743 Well.... there is obviously more impact if you see their death (i assume the viewers seen the cast "being eaten" in that 1980 movie) while in Blair Witch they was just vanished (i assume).
I had already heard most of these, growing up in the early 1970's my mom used to read all those check-out line news rags like The Enquirer and the others, I knew most stories were made up rumors but I was surprised to learn some of the weirdest, most unbelievable ones were actually true. I loved the scene in Men in Black where they got lots of leads from them. 🤣

Exactly. If someone is bound and gagged, give them something to hold onto. If they drop it, that's their safeword. They should have negotiated some kind of sign with her before she was submerged. Their big mistake was assuming the instant-drain switch would (a) function and (b) be reachable. In a life-critical situation, never let there be a single point of failure.

Fun fact, The Blair Witch Project was shot in real life, the actors were given a basic script of the movie and camped in the woods with nothing but an Hi8 camcorder and camping gear. Also all the lines in the movie were improvised as no lines were given except for the beginning interview
I also read that the producers would do things to mess with the actors, like rustle the tents, or put up scary things to make their reactions more believable.

I was an extra in Hollywood in the late 70s -mid 80s on one shoot. One of the 2 main actors was shorter that the other, and they pulled out a crate for him to stand on..i had only heard rumors about that happening..but there it was!
The cat was living on the studio lot. FFC thought it would make an interesting contrast to the very serious scene showing the "softer side" of Don Vito. Brando was an avid animal lover and was delighted to share the spotlight with kitty. I think the cat steals the scene! xoxo
I have to tell you something: I have watched videos by myriad TH-camrs who often show a variety of interesting clips in every video, much like you do. Speaking as a published writer, however, I have made it a personal policy to never subscribe to these channels because the TH-camrs do not know how to write or use the English language ... AT ALL! When they write crap (which they often do), I refuse to subscribe. This is why I am Amazed by "Be Amazed" because the writer or writers KNOW how to write. They (assuming there's more than one writer) understand how English works, and they use it well. That is why, after watching this particular video and having been impressed by the writing for several videos before this one, I am subscribing to "Be Amazed." I doubt that I'll watch all of your videos, but I've already seen enough to know that when I do watch one of yours, I won't be tortured by ungrammatical expressions of every sort. You have my thanks.

@@a64738 I don't consider myself a grammar Nazi. More like a grammar commander, as in a military boot camp officer. You can't really be any form of Nazi when those who speak English as their primary language can't speak English nearly as well as those who speak it as their second language. I care enough to correct people when they're wrong, especially (or should I say "expeshullie"?) when they are known to be born in English-speaking countries.
I don't know how tall she was at the time (she's 5" 2' now), but in Lemony Snicket, Emily Browning had to wear heels because she was so short.
That scene in the first Resident Evil movie, where Alice checks her shoulder and finds bruises, are real bruises. Milla hurt herself doing a few stunts, so they left it in to use for the shower scene.

The way I heard it, a crew member found the cat and gave it to him, because he knew Marlon loved cats. They also almost had to re-shoot, because of how loud the cat purred.

As a small time film maker, I find it revolting for directors to put their actors in harm's way. Something I never have, or will do.
Better think twice before making that claim. They did not know of the dangers of asbestos back then. They thought it was safe. You could end up in the same kind of situation and not know about it until much later!!
Some awful things were done by the directors of the series Stranger Things. Google it. Exhaustion, shaming, making one of the female leads kiss another actor despite her saying no, injuries. The kids were just so excited about being in a successful series, they just shrugged off what sometimes amounted to real abuse. The directors actually laughed about that kiss and other incidents in an interview with the cast that I saw on TH-cam. The girl who had the kissing scene said she was so anxious about her FIRST KISS being during filming this show. One of the directors laughed and said, "That's why we made you do it, ha ha ha." They struck me as self-centered creeps.

The Star Wars grenade thing reminds me of the medical devices Dr. McCoy used on Star Trek, made from Swedish salt/pepper shakers, and a device seen on officer's desks in ST-TNG that are actually a type of telephone conference device we had at my state IT department. And many scifi guns are built from real guns, sometimes not even much modified.
Geordi La Forge's original V.I.S.O.R. was actually a repurposed and modified plastic banana clip.
The blasters on the recent (Ep. 7 onwards) Star Wars were die-cast metal.

A lot of more conservative people have left Hollywood and go back only to produce movies and then leave.
It’s never what it seems; everything’s an illusion or outright lies. I never even knew about the Blair Witch movie until now, but that was absolutely insane for them to put it on the news and make the public genuinely believe that it was real.
Another fun fact about that Raiders of the Lost Ark scene, it was improv on Ford's part because he was exhausted after so many takes.

The cat in The Godfather wandered onto the set while they were about to shoot. Brando picked it up and started petting it while the scene was being shot.
The Johnny Cabs in the original Total Recall were modified VW Beetles. The actual Johnny Cab Robot was made of wood. I got see these up close and in person when I worked in Saugus, CA.

Fun fact about Ghangas Khan: More than one foreign ambassador described him as having blue eyes and either red or brown hair. There was never an actual portrait done of the great Khan. The most famous painting attributed to him is actually his grandson Kubli Khan.
Interesting....I went to Cuba in 1986 and met this spectacularly striking man with very very beautiful dark skin....and eyes of the bluest blue. His colouration was incredibly beautiful. Incidentally, it must be a rare eye colour in Cuba, for my then hubster is a natural blonde with, again, robin egg's blue eyes....adult/young girls were screaming and chasing after him when he walked on the beach, and they clustered around him, begging & motioning for him to take off his sunglasses....then, the screaming intensified. He has similar interest in him in Japan.

Fun fact: The movie [•REC] from 2007 never had a full script. Most of the acting was actually on the actor’s genuine reactions. Another thing was they were trying to have the actors as real as possible. Manuela Velasco which played Ángela Vidal which is shown in the screen as the woman in the white tank top, is also a TV reporter.
Thank you for this video. Regarding Brando using the cat as a prop to disguise a cue card, the cat was actually a stray that wandered onto the set, a cursory internet search reveals. Regarding the rest of the content, it could be summarized by saying, "I'm going to list some movies that utilized techniques that were common practice before their danger was known."

Ah the snow scenes, back in the days when you could do no wrongs (or so they thought) by using asbestos.
I as a young boy would play with asbestos rope as my dad replaced the glass window panes of our briquette heater. We had no idea, the stuff was so soft to the touch, unlike anything I had experienced before.
I had an asbestos mat to put my Bunsen burner on in science class, we all did back then!
It's only dangerous when you breath it in.
The "everyday items" section, such as the microphone toy repainted to be grenades, could have an entire video. Just from Star Trek, you have the warp engines of the USS New Orleans being made from disposable razors handles, translucent shower curtains being used to add chaotically-colored lighting on the original series, and the use f model kit parts to add details to ships, make one of Dr. McCoy's medical gadgets, and the canopy from a snap-together TIE Fighter kit being made into a Borg eyepiece in First Contact.

Ford also STAPLED his HAT to his head in "Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Arc"....the footage is shown in the Director's cut version of the DvD. He was (of course) NOT asked to do so, he was frustrated as his hat kept flying off when he was riding the horse, so he just stapled it on.

I absolutely love horror films. The Exorcist (1973) is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. But it never scared me, and I've not found any horror film to ever scare me. So I'm brave to watch any horror film.
Literally the only horror movie to ever scare me was the original 1987 "Hellraiser" film. That freaked me out!
When the Exorcist came out I was 13, some classmates sneaked into a screening, and it was the swearing that we all laughed at, I've never been scared by it!

Another Garland was forced to wear wraps in her chrests to minimize them oh and also gave her weight loss pills and other ones to keep her awske. Also heard on the Conquerer, for the sound stage scenes, they transported tons of radioactive soil from desert locations to the sets at the studio where cast and crew inhaled the contaminated dirt.
Today MOAB Utah, is FULL of radioactive sand... And NOBODY sais anything, go there, BREATH DEEP. Inhail that cancer! (Rip the dirt with your 4x4, let it dust).

With Brando, the cue cards thing is true. The cat thing isn't; but there is a story behind it. As far back as 'On The Waterfront', one of his techniques was to play with something with his hands while acting. Keys, an apple, a lighter, or, indeed, a kitten. Focusing on an object in his hands helped him focus on his performance for whatever reason. Watch his roles and you'll see him constantly fiddling with things with his hands as he acts.

Here's one. one Cannibal Holocaust is considered one of the first found films that looked so authentic that director Ruggero Deodato was arrested and charged with several counts of murder. At his trial, the supposedly deceased actors all show up on Italian TV to help clear Deodato's name...eventually he was cleared of all charges.
It's like with Oliver Robins in "Poltergeist" where his character is appearing to be strangled; problem was, Robins REALLY was being strangled. The director thought Robins was selling it... right up to the point where Robins started to develop hypoxia... but he was saved.
There's also the iconic AF line from "A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors", "Welcome to primetime, b*tch!"
Robert Englund made up that line.
By the way, you know Jack's iconic death scene in "Friday the 13th"? More "blood" came out that what was expected because of having to manually remove a clog by blowing into the tube.
Also, later in the movie, a pair of hands that DEFINITELY weren't Betsy Russell's are used.
There's also the iconic AF chestburster scene: Tom Skerritt was told what was gonna happen, but his co-stars WEREN'T.
There's also the line "you hit me with the phone, you d*ck". Skeet Ulrich's skills weren't the best and he ended up accidentally hitting his costar, Matthew Lillard, in the head.
