How to Disappear Completely is actually a song about Thom Yorke’s anxiety during the OK Computer tour, because it was the first time Radiohead was really really huge. A friend of his told him to tell himself “I’m not here, this isn’t happening” to help him with this anxiety and the part about walking through walls is a reference to a dream he had a night before the big concert. It’s easily my favorite on this album, awesome reaction btw

Just go through them all. They're all great in their own unique way.
I vividly remember hearing this album for the first time and, the moment it started, I was mesmerised. It was like nothing I'd ever heard before; like music from another dimension. Unreal.
Idioteque is largely about their fears at the dawn of the internet era and, 20-odd years on, it appears they were right.

Haha, yeah I think I just need to experience all their work!

    • @LongSinceDead1

Idioteque is especially focused on anxiety regarding warfare and climate change, and how politicians and corporations refuse to do anything about it because it serves their financial interests. Which is unfortunately still very relevant today

Absolutely classic album, and even more stunning when you consider that at the same time they recorded all the songs that went onto Amnesiac (released a year later), also a great record, just more eclectic. Great reaction/review, thanks for all you do and for picking wonderful music to feature.

Amazing album. It blew me away as a teenager. I felt confused at the time and sad and especially how to disappear completely made me cry and gave me peace at the same time. I still get a warm and sad feeling listening to this song and I am always amazed at it's impact on how it makes me feel. I think you should listen to Hail to the thief. It's great, might not be their most perfect album, but it is adventurous in all it's ideas and imo underrated. Thanks for this great and honest review. And keep listening. Especially In limbo will grow on you. It shines in it's details and layers.

Loved your reaction to this album! The next one should definitely be A Moon Shaped Pool, the most recent one, in my opinion. Although going with either Amnesiac, since it's pretty much Kid A Part 2, or The Bends would be fine too.

Delighted you came back to them - All their albums are worth listening to them but three of the six remaining definitely:
The Bends - A Rock album but with their twist,
Hail to the Thief - a mix of everything and much maligned but has some of their best songs
A Moon Shaped Pool - You want cinema soundtrack depression and beauty? Thats this one :)

I hope Optimistic and In Limbo can grow on you, i would advise listening to the whole thing on headphones, but also never listening to the tracks on their own, Kid A is one of these album that really works as a whole, i only ever play the full album or i dont listen to it

Kid A has 2 of my favorite Radiohead songs on it “The National Anthem” and “How To Disappear Completely”. Although “Idioteque” is up there as well.

Now that you have done the essentials, I'd still really love to see your reaction to "The Bends". Even if you aren't into rock music, Thom's raw vocals make the journey worth it. His singing style has changed so much over the years, but his insane range has not. This album had a tough job following "OK Computer". There are some really great songs on "Kid A", but for me there is a little something lacking. You will notice a lot of songs that sound a bit like Bjork. Thom loves Bjorks music, and it would make sense that he might pull a bit of inspiration from her music.

So, I'm super old and was a huge fan of Radiohead from The Bends onwards. After Creep (from their weakest album Pablo Honey) the band released The Bends and had quite a few charting singles. While the band and the album were both considered pretty good by the standards of the day, when OK Computer came out it was a complete sensation. Cuts from the album were in constant rotation on MTV, they were critical darlings, the music press called them more or less the salvation of rock music. World domination was not really something the band had aimed for, but somehow here they were. The first Radiohead concert I went to was when they toured OK Computer, as they were still growing their fanbase, the audience was incredibly eclectic, but the focus was still mainly on pure rock.
With Kid A, schisms in that growing fanbase started to form. There were those who felt the move away from pure rock that Kid A represented signalled that Radiohead had 'lost' whatever magic they once had, and those of us who felt this represented a much-needed break from their established style, one that would allow them to grow as artists and musicians. No cuts from this album really broke through to the mainstream, and after the ecstatic reception given to OK Computer, the album was initially seen as a failure. The concert for this album was insane. I saw them in Denmark the summer after the Roskilde tragedy (nine people were killed during a stampede when Pearl Jam took the stage at the Roskilde festival), rules about how enthusiastic concertgoers were allowed to be at a rock concert were so restrictive that it was a strangely subdued and awkward experience. Whenever anyone dared to get on the shoulders of their boyfriend or whatever, security would shine an extremely bright arclight directly into the audiences’ eyes. That meant most of us were sun-blind for the entire experience.
When Amnesiac was released shortly afterwards the fanbase that had grown with OK Computer was drastically reduced. The more mainstream audience had moved on to other things, and the album felt far more intimate as a result. The tour for Amnesiac also felt smaller. I'm sure it was just as expensive to mount, but the crowds seemed friendlier, more focused on the band- it was almost a religious experience, the audience I saw it with were definitely the converted.
Radiohead's politics began to surface more with Hail to the Thief. While they were always political in subtler ways, HTTT is a pretty direct diss-album aimed at the British Government of the day. As is true today, this left some fans with opposing politics pretty disappointed and upset. Also as is true today, there was much handwringing about whether or not public figures should be allowed to voice their opinions. The concert for HTTT was a much different affair to the previous concerts. The band, while always amazing live, were absolutely on fire. It was like they were driven by anger and had a point to make- it was one of the greatest concerts I have ever been to.
In Rainbows brought the band back into the mainstream, with it becoming their biggest record since OK Computer. Again, cuts from the album were on constant rotation on MTV (which was by this point moving away from its roots in music videos and had started on thier current path of wall-to-wall reality shows), and regular mainstream audiences were reintroduced to the band. While I am a confirmed die-hard fan who has always enjoyed even their most "difficult" work, In Rainbows quickly became my favourite album. It felt like it was written directly for me. This time I was able to score tickets to see them multiple nights at Victoria Park in London. This was by far the biggest crowd I had witnessed at one of their concerts. Together, those two concerts represent the best live experience I have ever had. The set list each night was almost completely unique. I felt like over those two nights I had experienced practically their entire discography live.
The King of Limbs was an odd experiment for the band. Instead of releasing the album in the typical way, Radiohead decided to self-release it through their website, and allowed fans to pay as much or as little for it as they wanted. The point the band were trying to make (that music sales are being killed because the music industry charges so much that it's driving fans to pirateBay or whatever) seemed to get a little lost in the media, with most journalists revelling in the schadenfreude of watching a stadium-filling rock band earn pennies for a full release album. I figured this would happen, so like many older fans when I bought the album, I paid $50 for it with the hope that by paying four times the regular CD price that I could help mitigate their losses. I missed the concert for this album. I was moving from Europe to the US that summer and simply found myself on the wrong side of the world.
Finally, we come to Moon Shaped Pool: Again, this one seemed to create a bit of a moment for the band. One or two cuts were on rotation on radio stations here in the US, and the band seemed to have moved from contemporary artists to distinguished elder statesmen of music. By now, their reputation seems unimpeacable, like Bob Dylan or Neil Young, musicians who've moved beyond the slings and arrows of popular success and become part of the firmament of the 20th/21st century musical landscape, their contributions to style and production are so huge that they have become indivisable from what comes afterwards. The concert of Moon Shaped Pool was not great. It might have been the venue I saw them at (the Shrine in LA, it was seated, everyone recorded it on their phone, you couldn't move or dance, and a small beer was $25- it sucked). This was by far the smallest crowd I had witnessed at one of their concerts, the venue was packed to capacity but it's a pretty small venue. The band were still great, but the experience absolutely wasn't.
I would recommend some of the solo work by the bandmembers. Thom has two excellent solo albums (Anima and The Eraser) that don't stray terribly far from the Radiohead sound (perhaps a little more electronic), and he did the astonishing soundtrack for Luca Guadagnino's remake of Suspiria. Jonny Greenwood has found enormous success in movie scoring, having done the soundtracks for There Will Be Blood, You Were Never Really Here, Spencer and lots more.
Sorry for the massive comment, I got a bit carried away! I really like your work and wish you every success!

A lot of people interpret Morning Bell as a song about a divorce or an abusive relationship, but I believe Thom said in an interview that it’s about a poltergeist or ghost exorcism or something similar. Either way, “cut the kids in half” is such a great line.

  • @stillatomic
    @stillatomic ปีที่แล้ว +4

aside from a couple tracks, most of the songs on here lyrically have no meaning or sense - Thom took the approach of focussing on sound and creating worlds within soundscape, so when it came to lyrics he quite literally (and this isn’t an analogy) put random lyrics in a hat and pulled them out to form sentences.
How to Disappear Completely is the only song where the lyrics were formed simultaneously and have a uniform theme/meaning, being hiding away from fame and trying to pretend like you aren’t there to escape it.

I think since you loved In rainbows you’ll also love A moon shaped pool (similar vibe in ways, and imo their saddest record). The bends is pre ok computer and is basically just a really good alt rock 90’s album. Amnesiac is good in its own way but kinda sounds like a B sides to Kid A and imo a lesser version. BUT it’s still good.
    Hope you like the suggestions!
