A Spearfishing Comedy of Errors in New Zealand, What Went Wrong?

  • This dive did not go to plan... because there wasn't one.
    I made a lot of mistakes, this video aims to understand why and share what can be learnt.
    Mistakes are the ultimate teacher, the best way to learn how to do something right is to first do it wrong. Learning from mistakes is essential for self improvement whether it's spearfishing or any other aspect of your life.
    Do we adapt to our errors or keep doing the same thing, encountering the same problems?
    Do we move forward or dwell on our situational shortcomings?
    Do We use mistakes as opportunities for improvement or find excuses, dodging accountability?
    Mistakes happen, you don't need to beat yourself up over it.
    There is plenty of hardship in life, no sense in creating more for yourself.
    The vast majority of errors in spearfishing are the result of poor planning and/or rushing. Spearfishing is exciting to say the least, an exhilarating experience like no other. It is easy to be totally enamored by the ocean, in fact it is perhaps what we desire most. But the ocean is no place for complacency, a few seconds of rational thought can make a massive difference.
    Great diving requires a certain level of detachment, broad focus, calculated movements. Everything thought out and visualized before it happens, a great dive starts with a great plan. Take the time to make sure your equipment is functional and ready because you never know what might swim by.
    Learning from mistakes and acting based on thought instead of impulse will make you a better diver and a better person.

    Dude, I feel this spearo vid more than many others. I could share some pretty bad fuck ups, but the point is to learn, adapt, and overcome. Good job, bro!

      @@BlueNeoprene I've been blown out to sea twice. One time diving off Gooseberry Island, MA USA I wentbfor a shore dive out about 3/4 NMIs off the island and hit 60mph winds & 13-15 foot swell on the way back. I made it about 2 of the 3 quarter NMIs before I was completely exhausted paddling a fully rigged yak after 6 hours of diving. The wind was so bad I geared up and tried swimming; pulling my yak behind me but in the process got blown out even further. Anchored my yak in about 60' of water and spent the longest 45min of my life getting absolutely hammered by 15' waves causing me to bear hug my yak after rolling it 3 times. It was May, middle of nowhere, no people, no boats bc of the conditions and getting dark. Boat was filling up with water and I was exhausted. Had to decide wether to wait for rescue in eyeshot about a mile off shore or cut my anchor line since my plow was so dug in and pray I made it across the bay instead of being blown out to sea with little food/water & no anchor. Pulled my damnedest and got the 23lb plow anchor up off the bottom, buttoned up my yak, and basically surf ski'd 4.5NMIs from Massachusetts into Rhode Island in 13-15' swell and Gale force winds. Made it to shore, nobody around, had to hitchhike, met a nice couple who helped me, and got t a ride back to camp with all my gear, all my fish, and all my sanity around 8pm after the longest day of my life. Couldn't sleep for a week because everytime I closed my eyes I would see walls of water and feel my stomach go up/down on a 15' pendulum. Don't dive in bad conditions if you are not prepared!

    Hey bro I want to encourage you - that was very humble of you to share footage of multiple mistakes and to be real about the learning curves that we all go through. I respect you for that.

    • @BlueNeoprene
      @BlueNeoprene  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well you have done exactly that Michael, very encouraging. I want to use my platform to educate as well as entertain. I hope that sharing my experiences can prevent a few wounded divers and fish. It wouldn't feel good just making fish quick scope music compilations because there is plenty of that already and doesn't provide much value to the viewer besides entertainment. When I was starting out I couldn't find much in the way of proper informative spearfishing videos so I want to be able to help those who might be in the same situation I was. No mates into spearfishing, no rolemodels just TH-cam and a speargun.

    This is something that every shore diver has or will experience. The other day I accidentally shot a giant moray ell that was behind my target under a dark ledge. I shit my wetsuit and had to swim with a 5kg grouper and a huge pist off moray eel half a mile.

    • @BlueNeoprene
      @BlueNeoprene  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ol morays can be very feisty. I heard a story of a diver who would always feed sausages to the same eel. One day he didn't bring a sausage, slippery dog got his finger instead 😅

    Definitely a great video, and the fact you were honest about your mistakes helps to keep faith in my fellow man way cool !! You're blessed to have a dive spot like that and the fact you go out of your way to pick up others garbage,we should all strive to take better care of our oceans! We're all grown up so let's act that way !! Keep up the good work !

      Thank you fish man. I try keep it real because the would is over saturated with fake people. It's our responsibility to take care of the ocean as it's our fault it's dying. If I can inspire people to be safer and care more I will be a very happy octopus 🐙

    One of my favorite vids of yours so far bro. Way to keep it real🤙 fuck I've had that happen with my float boat before, but the weight was from overloaded Kinas which I ended up loosing most of along with my dive torch and float cover😂 Planning and having knowledge of the area combined with the times of the tides is definitely some good advice youv'e given here man, a lot of people can learn from this. Keeping track of the time/tide while you dive and estimating where it will drag you can be the difference between exiting in a safe spot you planned or a dangerous unplanned exit spot. Something I've done many times and seems like I never learn😅😵‍💫

      Thank you Shanan, I'm sure you do run into trouble hauling huge crays, giant paua and the creamiest kina! Knowing the spots is half the challenge of spearfishing, unfortunately most people won't tell you much and you usually don't know who to ask. Can send it and get away Scott free most times but play the game enough and you lose eventually.

    Man you know that it's that damn lead. That caused this night mare. Last year I also found a weight belt with lead 8 kg and my own 7 kg and no float boat I almost died that day.

    I sold the same float boat because my area has a bit of swell and current. That float boat just dragged me and unsafe. I said to another diver the other day after a dive, ‘well that was rather refreshing today’ and diver responded sarcastically, ‘mate! I nearly drowned in there!’ 😂 One gets used to it, but most spearos here only have a small bullet or even just a tiny float for fishing with no flag.... you can’t see your buddy from meter away in the crashing waves. I just got the Ocean Hunter float boat which is smaller and better bullet shape (tho not as well made)… will try it out soon and hoping to get a big Mulloway in the rocky wash.

      Yep float boats are sweet as when seas flat but in rough water they can be a real hassle. Not the first time iv experienced a float boat try take on water and sink. Would be much nicer to YOLO it and never use a float/float line setup. Did you get the full size Ocean Hunter Float Boat or the mini one? Mine is the wettie mini, seems to hold fish well, dive weights is another story haha

    • @dirty_diver
      @dirty_diver ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BlueNeoprene I got the mini - just enough on top for few crays and bream or black fish. The rest has to be dragged in water, which is ok with me. Mostly because it’s so bull sharky here. I had the Wettie mini in pink. It was really well made, but it’s not at all good for my area. ‘Flat’ - I forgot what that even is. Great find on the dive weights tho!!!!!
