    I need to update the book cover for my Photography Buying Guide, so I decided to do a top-down approach. I used a C-Stand (sdp.io/cstand) with a boom to hold the camera straight down. I connected a Godox trigger (sdp.io/trig) to fire the Godox AD600 Pro strobe (sdp.io/ad600pro) with an octobox. My Sony a7R IV (sdp.io/a7r4) is tethered to my Alienware PC running CaptureOne using a TetherTools USB-C cable (sdp.io/tetherto.... The TetherTools cable isn't really special, but it's long, orange, and sturdy, so that does make it a bit more reliable and helps people not to trip on it. We bought all the gear shown and have never accepted money or free gear from any camera or lens manufacturer; none of this is sponsored.

    Aren't C-stand booms supposed to be over the big leg for stability? Genuine question, can't remember where I read that

    • @longliveclassicmusic

      Yes, but in this the load is super lightweight so it doesn't really matter. If it was a 600 Pro with a 7 foot softbox ya might have a problem.

    When I use my C-Stands without weight, I always point the longest leg, (the tallest one) toward the item I am mounting, (light or camera). When I am using a sandbag weight, I position the longest leg away from the item and drape the sandbag over the tallest leg so all the weight is effective on the stand, none of the sandbag touches the floor.

    Whatever happened to your audio, you may want to take a look at it. If you are, by any chance, using an Atomos Ninja V - send it in, I had a problem with the soundboard, and they fixed it for free since it was a manufacturing problem.

    Tony, I really enjoy your work. I want a camera that supports gps without an extra unit attached to the body. Bluetooth link to a cell phone is fine if it works and does not drain the batteries quickly. The canon 90D is said to support this through its app over Bluetooth. I have an 80d and it does not. I cannot understand how a thin phone can support gps but our cameras do not. A video discussing gps , how and which cameras support it. Thanks keep up the great videos.

    It is painful to watch C stand used against all rules here. Load is supposed to be on there other side - aligned along the biggest leg of your C stand (it will fall even with mild load the way Tony used it) and to the right from center column so the load will tighten the griphead, not make it loose. .

    • @longliveclassicmusic
      @longliveclassicmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a tiny camera with a relatively small lens, not a huge monolight with enormous modifier… These stands are super heavy and extremely well supported. It's just that with extreme loads it's not enough.

    The new buying guide only seems half updated? Like, yes there's some things about newer cameras in it, but it seems like nothing about the older cameras was updated, leading to some contradictory or out of date advice in regards to what bodies are the "best overall for XXX" or on available lenses, that kind of thing. For example:
    "The a7R is Sony’s top-end mirrorless
    camera, but I still recommend the standard a7 to most people. While thea7R is an amazing camera, the extra resolution (36 megapixels, compared to 24 on the a7) is mostly wasted, unfortunately. " That was true when it was first written, but in 2020?

    I am thinking to buy this camera, but I am not sure if my macbook is enough powerful? I am shooting 99% tethered, and I am afraid I can have big lag with file transfer. How powerfull is your PC and how fast your images are visible on screen?

    I hate saying things like this because I know how much time and effort was put into it. But I’d rather be honest and helpful then kiss ass and not be honest. I feel you should have made it brighter imo doesn’t really pop like the old one. Also, it just looks like someone’s countertop. It doesn’t convey the contents of the book like the other one. I think the passport is especially unnecessary. You shot it like a Saturday morning Instagram post, but it’s for a buying guide, I would try to put an item from all major categories on the cover without making it look too cluttered. Finding that balance is the job!

    Curious: Have you done a video on how book deals can work? For example, do you update the cover photo gratis just because it helps keep the book fresh? Or do you set it up so that the publisher hires you separately for he new cover project, outside of the book deal itself?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We haven't made a video, and in this case, we own the publishing company, so there's not much use in me paying myself. I have shot book covers for outside publishers, and it's either sold as stock photography or by a day rate if it's a custom shot.

      Literally every area of photography out there has educators LIKE Karl Taylor and Lindsay Adler and Felix Kunz whose premium content could run circles around the Northrups. The Northrups do insanely well with published material. That's why they're so successful. He's an amazing writer. Actual working pros in the various fields do way better with premium video education, and these days the Northrups get most of their traffic from their gear review videos.

    I personally don’t like cords and shy away from tethered shooting. If a client insists, I will use a large iPad Pro and just use the Imaging Edge app via WiFi. It allows for live view and when I take the photo, it transfers a jpg preview wirelessly that is high enough resolution for evaluation purposes. I see no point really in having to ingest RAW files via a cord. Also the A7 RIV has fast enough WiFi and offers wireless tethering even for RAW files. Cords seem so yesterday and I’m just curious why you didn’t go the route of a wireless solution? Thanks for the videos as always!😊

      Tony & Chelsea Northrup I would LOVE a video showing a video shot in 8k, then you show how much you can crop in before crossing the 4K boundary if that makes any sense. Basically I want to know how much I can punch in and still get a clean shot.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did this in our poll and punched-in 8k definitely looks noticeably better than punched-in 4k. I wouldn't say there's one magic number because it's going to depend on the viewing size and sharpness of the lens, but I punched in 200% for one shot in this video and you probably didn't notice. Punching in 150% is definitely fine.
