- An updated trailer for this channel featuring my documentary, Sense of Scale about film industry model makers. I have uploaded the entire doc in segments. More videos will be uploaded when time permits.
The true stars of the industry.
Thank you for preserving the contributions of these folks. So many have already left us.
I hope then that a model maker who left us has been in the Oscar's In Memoriam video due to the great contribution to motion picture arts and sciences.
Exciting times, digital models, real models and a bit of both!!!
Just watched your interview on InCamera wonderful as usual!
I would pay for a physical copy of a doc for this.
Love, love, LOVE these videos! An amazing accomplishment, thank you so much!
Bought your DVD "Sense of Scale" back in 2020 as I love miniatures and movie making. Great channel and DVD. Both have afforded me a behind the scenes look at the history and people responsible for bringing wondrous and fanciful images to life in my most beloved movies. As a consequence, I was able to correct a mistake of another channel for mislableing a miniature FX scene regarding the actual movie and note that it was done by the Skotak brothers.
Big Fan of your work, viewed all your videos so many times! Can't wait to see more! I can't stand CGI in today's movies...
Thanks!
god I love good physical models. GCI and models are a match made in heaven as they allow skilled VFX folks to combine the best of both worlds. The urban modeling for Blade Runner are some of the best I've seen in years for example. Looks so much better than the pure CGI city-scapes used in a lot of other scifi.
I love to tinker and get just so inspired by the pros doing the work with fysical models and the art of making them into filmprops.
I absolutely love this channel - I wish some of these guys were still in business. I can't find model makers for film anywhere these days!
Fon Davis has his Fonco Studios in LA. They make models and props. Ian Hunter still makes miniatures for TV shows and movies. Simon Weisse makes miniatures for Wes Anderson movies. There are still a few shops working these days. Leigh Took's Mattes and Miniatures shop in England is also building stuff for House of the Dragon etc.
Sweet was just thinking about your channel the other day and hoping you'd post more often!
I have some cool model shop behind the scenes videos waiting, but the actor strike last year has pushed production and releases of the films to 2025... Hopefully some new interviews coming up this year, though!
sweet im looking forward to seeing the videos an sharing in the groups on facebook . as a model an diorama builder your channel is a great source of info on how they went about building the best models an large scale sets in the movies is wonderful to have at hand
Helps realise movies were actually real deal hands on effects. Carvers of the craft. Happy space.😊
this Is probably the channel I visit more than anything else! thank you for this!
Thanks for watching!
i got the DVD and am enjoying your channel, watch them over and over. I was lucky to be at the tail end of the classic age, working on LOTR films under some of my heroes i read about in StarLog etc. There is still some model making, hopefully a renaissance pending thanks to Mr Savage et all and democratization of technologies. !! PlastiC is FantastiC !!
Thanks! I sold a lot of DVD`s to Australia. It would have been really cool to get some Weta model makers involved. And maybe I can reach some people for interviews at some point!
It's always fun to watch these. Thank you Berton!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
This is beautiful, Berton. Looking forward to the Documentary. Your channel is an educational mine, so much to learn here.
How wonderful, more videos!
We are looking forward to that movie. Wow, it is amazing what you can do. I adore your work. Keep up the good work.
A fantastic documentary, I’ve enjoyed every minute
Looking forward to this
I love this channel so much
A miniature done right looks real. TRUTH!
In a world of AI and increasing inhuman fakery, this sort of art needs to make a comeback!
Wow, this will be great.
VERY excited.
Love this
Thanks for all the effort!
It sounds like there is hope with digital printers bringing model making back to films. I love the memories and the contributions of these artists.
I believe some of the starship models in The Madalorian TV show are mostly 3D printed. Interstellar also used 3D printing for the miniatures. Wes Anderson still prefers model makers making the miniatures for his movies by hand.
@@piercefilm Excellent. Of course they are using them for props and costumes so there are a lot of uses.
Excited for this! Love the craft and skill in miniatures.
This is what I wanted to do when I grew up. By the time I grew up everything started to go digital.
Yes, it is a bit depressing. And one of the reasons I made this documentary. Maybe it will inspire new directors to use more practical FX and not so much CGI:
@@piercefilm Agreed as i still prefer Practical Effects to Visual Effects
"A miniature done right looks real" there you go.
"Moon" is a vastly underrated film.
Thank you for this documentary. Absolutely love it
I really love what You do. I use to listen to these videos even when I walk and I can’t watch them. The stories and narratives are so compelling and interesting
Many thanks!
Building miniature sets is masculinity in VFX and Hollywood can't have that.
There are also many women model makers.
I love all of your videos. It's such an education.
Thank you!
Legends!
This is going to be fun to watch
Amazing!
Where can Sense of Scale be watched in full online, what streaming services is it on? I admire this artistry, but am finding it confusing to locate the "definitive" version.
There is no one version. It is an ongoing documentary project I am adding to. Must be over 18 hours long now all together(!) You can use the Playlist function here on TH-cam to help search for particular movies or model makers. It's all free! Thanks for the interest.
@@piercefilm I appreciate the explanation!
More videos. Brilliant
awesome
LET'S GOOOOOO!
Can,t wait to buy this online
I made a 3hr DVD many years ago, but it sold out fast. The doc is free on my TH-cam channel now. 18+ hours long! And it's an ongoing project with more coming up.
@@piercefilm Awesom
I'm a bit disappointed that the Japanese weren't featured here since they've had a lot of experience with miniatures, especially for Kaiju movies and TV shows, however I do like how this features the people in the west who also practice the craft, so it was really interesting to see how they do it over there, overall I like this documentary because of the light it shed over these artists
I just wish you would make EVERYTHING you did available for purchase on a full set of DVDs or Blu-Rays at whatever full rez you recorded it at as so we all can have a PERMANENT record, not dependent on TH-cam hanging on to it. Take my money for the entire work of everything you recorded. I'm worried that if TH-cam gets deleted or some such thing in the future that all your work will also go away. It needs to be PERMANENTLY preserved by making sure that as many people as possible have physical copies of these historical interviews and video compilations so they can never be erased from history!!
I've already lost some of the doc in a hard drive crash years ago. What is on this Channel will have to last for eternity! Let's hope Elon Musk doesn't buy TH-cam and destroy it...
@@piercefilm Well, obviously you need to retrieve all the info here on TH-cam and preserve it!!!!
You never backed up all your original footage???
Damn. That's sad.
I have about 50 hard drives. Some went down, others are still alive. Moving endless hours of footage from one to another takes time. I have various versions and parts spread out all over the place and would need to go find it all. Maybe some day.
Looks great! ....may want to fix the sound so some of the interviewees aren't just in one ear though.
Had to patch this trailer together from various found parts as I lost a lot in a hard drive crash years ago...
@@piercefilm oh no!! that sucks :(
This is *so* great, thanks for all the hard work - been wanting to watch this movie since I first heard about it several years ago :) Is there any chance at some point there will be a playlist with all the segments in the "correct order" for viewing the whole documentary in it's entirety as it was cut/intended?
Thanks! Well, there are playlists based on movie genre or FX person etc. I don't have an order other than possibly by year the film was made. Starting with Dark Star and ending with Moon. But mainly people can just pick and choose what films interest them.
@@piercefilm thanks for replying so fast :) I’ve watched it all, the amount of work that have gone into this must have been ginormous :D The reason I was asking is just my brain wanting to watch «the documentary» as it was created/cut/finished (and not released) but just having access to all these amazing interviews and footage of all this great work is more than good enough :) I’ve had an interest in miniatures and effects since I was a kid in the 80s watching Fantastic Voyage on tv and 2010 in the movie theater at only 10 years old, and have just started making my own miniatures and models now, trying to create som of that magic I experienced myself back in the days, and seeing all this footage is such a great inspiration, so thanks for doing this :)
I’ve wanted to see the movie (“in order”) since I discovered the channel. I’d like to see “the flow”, so to speak, of how all of these great segments go to together as a whole. Wish I’d known about the movie when it was available. I’d absolutely have bought it. And will if it ever becomes available again.
Rest in peace Bill, a sad end to a great modelmaker.
Yes, very unfortunate that a few of these talented artists have passed away. Hopefully, their stories and work will inspire new generations of filmmakers.
Is the DVD gonna come back anytime in the future? I missed out on that one.
No plans at the moment to do that. Costs are too high to make DVD's since most people switched to streaming. Maybe a digital download some day. But it's 15+ hours long and growing, so it will be difficult to upload that much footage.
Modelers replaced by CGI, now CGI artists replaced by AI shortly..
Definitely one of the coolest jobs ever. ;) Some of the interviews can only be heard in the left channel. Especially with headphones that is not optimal...
Yeah, I lost some of the videos in a hard drive crash a while ago so I had to patch stuff together from parts. It still gives people who haven't seen this channel an idea of what Sense of Scale is despite some sound issues etc.
@@piercefilm Cool (not the hard drive crash of course). Gotta check out the film some time!
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👀🇧🇷
Would love to see the documentary as a single piece too. Any plans to release this as a whole?
It's too long. 15+ hours and growing. It's made to be seen in individual portions by films. The Playlist button helps to find which film.
@@piercefilm didn’t realise it was that long lol. Yeah as much as I love the documentary wouldn’t want to sit through that much in one go 😝
🎉
I have the DVD from some years back. Would a blu ray be possible? Was the content originated in HD?
No Blu-ray possible. The doc is 15+ hours long and growing. I did film it in HD. Streaming is the only possibility for this ongoing project.
I know all the content is being uploaded to TH-cam, but is there anywhere I can get a copy of the whole documentary on DVD or BluRay?
I can sell a DVD to you if you are in Germany. 25 Euros. I have a few left. Otherwise, no plans to make Blu-rays due to the enormous length of the doc, and people preferring streaming to DVD's etc. Thanks
Will you ever make the documentary available for sale again?
Not as a DVD or Blurray. It's too long. If TH-cam crashes one day, then I will upload it all again somewhere else like Vimeo.
Shut up and take my money
Where can I watch the full film?
Here on my channel. It's not really one film since it is around 15+ hours long(!) I broke it down into segments. You can use the Playlist button to search for individual videos about certain films. And I will be adding more over time since it is an ongoing project. Thanks.
Is there any way to purchase this documentary in its entirety? Digital download?
Unfortunately, not at this time. As the doc is 15+ hours long and I keep adding to it. Maybe I can re-upload it all some day to a new platform for downloading when I have a faster computer.
Now with AI, all manner of creative people will be replaced by robot creators....no need for painters, model builders, writers, even actors...We are all being made obsolete...
Let's go Skynet, just end it already!
I also see it going that way... so maybe this documentary will stick around for a while to show future generations that real people actually made real things with their hands and creativity.
Is the cow a Father Ted reference? 🤔
Not consciously. ;) I just had a small model cow from another project lying around and used it.
Today's movies so packed full of CGI just look terrible compared to miniatures and physical location shooting of the past.
:)
I thank each and every one of you for making me who I am today! The magic of cinema made me a better man. th-cam.com/video/x-JabuPRxUU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KzjapKIMoZ5SIEsN
