I have been using the death metal recto DI tracks in the session for tone matching. There's currently 15ish amp Sims in the chain using the same virtual cabinet and level matched to switch between them. To hear their character eq them in the 'amp' so to learn how to best apply them. Your matrix is great idea for consistency. Great course, i even made an homage to the grindstein by some thoughtful fx routing to split the signal and blend In the channel as i don't own one. But i got pretty close to the sound of one using audiority hm2 and ignite amps PRO FET distortion.
Awesome! I see you#re learning and having fun. The Audiority HM2 is great btw! Also try to do the same thing with the modern metal DIs. The amps will react differently because the tuning is not that extremely low like in the DM example.
@@KohleAudioKult i am just about to open up the daw for bit of a 'wind down'. I shall go back into that one like and play with it as you suggest to really listen and hear the differences. Yes having fun whilst learning and being creative!
The part about keeping things straight on explains why I’m not a huge fan of the Fredman technique. It’s all fizz because you’re essentially adding more presence to an already present sound.
Just finished the course yesterday. It is amazing!!! Kohle, could you please make a content or give some advice about loudness sweet spot of speakers? Its like, I understood that for tight metal the power amp adds unpleasant clipping/saturation. But the speakers also behaves unpleasantly after cranking too much them. It'd be huge help if you give a light in this topic In my case I got a little evh 5150 15w, with 2x12 v30's. The speakers behaves good between Master Vol 1 and 2 (9 o'clock maximum), after that just adds boomy.
Can you make a video about blending speakers and how you did the phase and delaying a mic...but using reaper to do it? I am a noob when it comes to recording and I would love to learn how to blend my mics/speakers to get a heavier tone out of my guitar tracks. please and thank you. BTW I love your videos, and appreciate how much knowledge you share with us.
It's all about understanding phase, delay and volume. It has nothing to do with the DAW. There are two courses in my academy showing you how I do this! Join the Kult: www.kohleaudiokult.com
Recently I think about speakers changing in my 1960 cab with 4x g12t75. What will be better: 2x v30 (China) with 2x g12t75 or 2x Eminence v128/ gb128 with 2xg12t75 ? I use marshall slx amp.
Technical question. Lets assume normal situation that musician is using 4 the same speakers in one cab. And sometimes at studio people are using more than one mic, for example one ribbon (for low end) and one dynamic (for brightness). Then they blend them. It always creates phasing problems, more noise, more cables and so on. So why not just use one mic and EQ? Especially almost always people are using some EQs.
Because the effect of blending is way more complex than EQ. Imagine 1000 bands. The way a proper blend fills up certain frequencies is very difficult to achieve with EQ.
Truthfully, I derive any sound I'm looking for using a homebuilt 2x12 cab sporting a Fane 65 and a Fane 75 speakers. Cab is wired dual single (either) or series, parallel, or series parallel with switches on rear. I mic it with a Cloud 44-A... Edit : Amp is a Hughes & Kettner GrandMeister Deluxe 40, not to mention a 14-space rack of processors (Axe F/X, dBx compressor,Tascam EQ, BBE, etc...)
What do you use to adjust the phase and eq in real time like you do at about 14:58 of this video? Is that a mixer of your interface or is it something inside cubase?
@@KohleAudioKult I have the same "problem", I have a Roland Quad Capture but can I do that in Cubase directly ? Or we must delay samples inside the audio interface ?
Cojones, everbody want that in their guitar tone! "Cojones" maybe a cool name for an IR or your next IR-Pack..... haha :-P 100 watt razorblade -Kohle chainsaw bliss-bulldozer death and so raw yet well done are my favorites so far, cheers! ;-)
I have a question that might be a bit dumb, but I ask it anyway. I have a 4x12 marshall cab and I have 4 16ohm celestials in it. However I want to replace 2 of them with vintage 30 speakers 8 ohm. Is the difference between the 8 and 16 ohm gonna be a problem using 1 speaker input?
Hey Kristian that riff you always play / use. It's in the beginning of this video @ 1:25. Is it from a song of yours? If it's not a song it should be. It's a brutal riff... Awesome video as always.
It’s from the Death Metsl song of this course. Originally it was the presentation video of the Grindstein pedal. This: th-cam.com/video/hY0qhoehMmE/w-d-xo.html
I’m trying to delay the mics in studio one while monitoring live. But delaying the track only seems to change things on the already recorded track. Not while live monitoring . Any ideas fellas? Thanks
Sounds like you are using a Delay in your DAW that only affects the playback. Is you are using Cubase for example, you have to insert the delay on the input channel and not the tracks you record.
Hi, I have two questions. Question1 : what do you think about different settings for left and right)? For instance Amp1/Mic1 + Amp2/Mic2 on the left and Amp1/Mic2 + Amp2/Mic1 on the right side. Instead of amp and mic you can also use speaker+mic combination. You get the point. Or - what I liked to use more than 10 years ago - find a good sound with a mic or mic-combination on one (e.g. the left) guitar speaker (in most cases a 57 and V30) and then hook up the same setting but mirrored on the right speaker. (easy in case of one sm57 and a cab with 4xV30). So you get the same sound for the right side. But not exactly due to slightly different speakers, not excatly to the µm exact mic placement. This can widen the stereo effect. And for the other two guitars you flip the sides. Question 2: I often see people in the studio - I think you, too - micing also the lower speakers. In my (less compared to your) experience the upper speakers sound better. And if you want to use the lower speakers put the cabinet higher. E.g. on beer crates. Because of the strong reflections from the floor. 50cm delay cancels out frequencies of 1m wavelength, 300Hz. So you get compfiltering in the lower mids. Did you noticed that, too? Does it really matter? It's only imagination?
I only do that if I want both guitarists to have a distinct tone. I have also done mixes with a slightly different sound left and right, but that never really did anything for me. Here's an example: th-cam.com/video/bY7djxo6lz0/w-d-xo.html
Love your stuff man! Guitars always sound Killer and im so looking forward to your academy! Already have your guitar course and your IR’s and I‘m on fire for the drum course! Best IR‘s ever and I tried more than a couple other packs. So far the only other IR‘s i liked are from ML Soundlab. Have you ever tried his Mikko Plugin? I think it is fun to move the mics in real time. I think a collab DV-77 Pack would be f... awseome. Grüße aus Freiburg ;)
Thanks :) and I forgot I would also love a course on recording and mixing heavy vocals! As soon as I put the vocals in my mixes they just don‘t work anymore. (Maybe because I suck at singing xD)
Hey Kohle!, when your inverting and changing the phase, what are you mostly listening for? Is it the low end cancelation? Is it the change in mid to high fizz? Is it a drop in general volume?
The less you hear, the better! When you change the delaysettings, you can decide which frequencies you wanna get rid of. Sometimes there different possible settings. Whatever you hear with the phase switched, will later disappear!
Kohle help!! I just watched your URM vid on reamping without a reamp box, just using a passive DI. I am confused on the signal chain. What is that utility/ function of a “converter” and why do I need it in between my computer and the DI box. Would my Scarlett 18i8 interface suffice? Unfortunately the only outputs on my 18i8 are line level, would I still be able to use one of those outputs if I just used some sort of adapter/ converter box to bring that line level down to mic level? I am very confused!
The signal in your computer is digital. It needs to be converted to analog. There is an inbuilt converter in every interface (like your Scarlett). So nothing to worry about. It's just important ot understand where the signal is analog and where it's digital.
Guys I have a question: I’ve decided to upgrade my Blackstar 4x12 cab by getting 2 DV-77s, but what should I pair it with? Would 2 75 Creambacks work well/complement them like they supposedly do with V30s? (since the DV-77 is a bit similar to the V30) ... If not, which speakers do you think would work well with a pair of DV-77s? I play extreme metal (death/black/doom) and a bit of post rock/dark ambient This is my first time changing speakers so any help is really appreciated!
@@KohleAudioKult Thank you, Kristian! I like the heavy doom/stoner style of production a lot, but I also like a slightly more modern sound when things get speedy
@@KohleAudioKult Kristian, I’d like to ask you something else please! If I install a DV-77, a 75 Creamback, a Tornado Stealth 65, and a Hesu Demon in my 4x12 cab, could it work well or will the overall sound probably lack tightness? I plan to mic 3 speakers with 3 different mics (57, AEA R92 ribbon, Placid Audio lo-fi mic) so I’d love to experiment and combine tones
Hi Kristian, I really learned a lot from you regarding micing a guitar cab. During Lockdown I also created my own IRs and I realized that the quality only depends on the Mic Placement (Es steht und fällt mit der Platzierung der Mikrofone ;) ) I only have the problem that I do not have a seperate LiveRoom in my basement at home. Thus I cannot listen to the mic-placement on my Monitors (JBL305 MkII) but only on my headphones (DT770 Pro). Even this is a compromise. I have to play the amp quietly. There is sound-bleeding from the cabinet in the headphones. I came across the solution to place the mics while using headphones, record them, listen to the record via my monitors and re-place the mics if needed. This process consumes a lot of time. Your approach to flip the phase is a awesome Idea but hardly possible on headphones when there is bleeding from the Cabinet. Do you have an Idea how to deal with it in a better way? Cheers from Germany Christoph
Sounds stupid but: Get another room! At least for the soundcheck and the IR capture. Or maybe an isolation cab. I used to have one from Randall that sounded pretty damn good.
Another great video! I've just been given with an oversized Blackstar S1-412 Pro A Cabinet by a band I've just helped with some pre-production, what are your thorts on the cab?
Hallo Kohle. Wie summiert du die verschiedenen Mikrofon Signale? Nimmst du die Mikrofone separat auf und summierst in der DAW oder nimmst du das summierte Signal auf?
What do you think about recording these speakers separately? I mean play the same riff for each of them. I think, this way you can avoid phase issues, but will the sound not be blurry then?
Great channel as always. I don't record my playing but I really enjoy your speaker comparisons and learning about capturing guitar tone. Eminence are by far my favorite speakers. My combo right now is a governor and a cannabis rex. One I haven't tried is the swamp thang. What's your favorite eminence alone or in combination? Cheers
What is the difference on a Eminence CV-75 vs CV-65 other than the wattage ? Thanks I'm planning to pair cv-65s with celestion g12t-75s . Would this be a ok mix ?
It's more about the amp. The amp needs to be at a "comfortable" level. You start at zero with the master volume and at some point it feels like the amp is "coming to live". That's enough volume. you don't need more.
I usually have channel volume at about 1 o'clock, master at zero. I then slowly turn the master up until the cab starts to resonate. Do a couple test runs. and adjust from there. edit: Like Kohle said, it will start to "come to life". You really will know when you start getting in that zone.
You can use noise, but it’s better with a guitar signal because you will be able to tell if the frequencies that will be canceled out are imports or not.
This great and cool to know the basics. now i would love to know hot to get a "decent" sound out of my harley benton 2x12 (not the v30-Version and my 1x12 ornage (v30). i know, i should get different cabs or at least exchnage the speakers, but lets just pretend i need or want to work with what i got cause i just wanna play around and record demos or just see how far i can get, cause its Corona-Time and i got spare time to get in to homerecording. :)
Super cool stuff from your channel, love it! I have a question: how much does a certain mic pre affects the sound, talking about screaming hi gain tones? There are a lot of harmonics and overtones (I hope to use the correct words) in a distorted sound, can you hear a huge difference using a Neve instead of an Api or an Ssl with the same microphone? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

"Angled setups are not that easy to recall"...[turns to Dynamount Control] :) I mean I'm a fanboy of your stuff, I definitely learned also from this video, and I certainly don't question that one can get the same results with on-axis-only setups, but in the age of the Dynamount, the Fredman clip (and drag&drop 3D modelling & printing) is the difficulty of recall really a valid argument against off-axis setups?

Also, the difference between a different rear loaded smaller 412 with insulation vs a Mesa 412 with no insulation. Love your videos! Keep them coming and continue to shred!!!
amazing as always
Would really like to hear some Laney cabs sometime too.
Me too! ❤️
Well that was an incredibly helpful video. Thank you very much!
Thank you for the awesome video! Appreciate it Bigtime. Learned a ton dude.
I know it may not be your thing but it would be awesome if you did a video like this but with a fuzz pedal, like for doom or stoner
But you’ve seen this, right?

How about mixing blended speakers?
My cool cab has a blackbird a c12k and 2 English g12k
can you do that sample align to match the phase on cubase?
Just finished the course yesterday. It is amazing!!!
Kohle, could you please make a content or give some advice about loudness sweet spot of speakers?
Its like, I understood that for tight metal the power amp adds unpleasant clipping/saturation. But the speakers also behaves unpleasantly after cranking too much them. It'd be huge help if you give a light in this topic
In my case I got a little evh 5150 15w, with 2x12 v30's. The speakers behaves good between Master Vol 1 and 2 (9 o'clock maximum), after that just adds boomy.
I feel like you should just go to the point where the amp „comes to life“. That way you never drove even a 1x12“ too hard

The Krusty Kohle ir sounds amazing! And is very versatile too, i tried it with different amp sims and it always sounds 👍
Wait till you try the other ones!
High quality content dude
The infamous Celestion T75's actually sound awesome.. When blended with V30's
Killer video and tones!
Can this sample delay used for the phase correction be done in Cubase?
You need a very fine delay. Samples, not milliseconds!
That’s the mixer of my SSL MX4 interface.
@@KohleAudioKult I have the same "problem", I have a Roland Quad Capture but can I do that in Cubase directly ? Or we must delay samples inside the audio interface ?
Cojones, everbody want that in their guitar tone! "Cojones" maybe a cool name for an IR or your next IR-Pack..... haha :-P 100 watt razorblade -Kohle chainsaw bliss-bulldozer death and so raw yet well done are my favorites so far, cheers! ;-)
Noted! Definitely sounds like my typical IR language. Haha!
Danke dir! Ich versuche eigentlich, immer 8 Ohm zu nehmen. Klingt wärmer und man hat keinen Anpassungsstress.

Very informative video!
Here's an example:
th-cam.com/video/bY7djxo6lz0/w-d-xo.html
@@KohleAudioKult a big disadvantage is also that you cannot fly say verse 1 from guitar 2 to the fucked up verse 2 of guitar 1.
I haven’t tried the Mikko stuff. He did the Omega IRs which sound ok.
But his cabinet plugins look nice!

@@KohleAudioKult thank you so much kohle!! Your vids have helped me so much in producing my bands upcoming album! I can’t thank you enough man!
Question, if I don't have another ribbon, do you think an AKG D112 would work for the "super balls" sound?
You can try. Hard to tell. Those kick mics are very often less linear. But you won’t know before you have tried ❤️🍺🤪
Guys I have a question:
I’ve decided to upgrade my Blackstar 4x12 cab by getting 2 DV-77s, but what should I pair it with? Would 2 75 Creambacks work well/complement them like they supposedly do with V30s? (since the DV-77 is a bit similar to the V30) ... If not, which speakers do you think would work well with a pair of DV-77s? I play extreme metal (death/black/doom) and a bit of post rock/dark ambient
This is my first time changing speakers so any help is really appreciated!
It's hard to tell, especially without knowing your taste.
I love how they sound with Swamp Thangs, but that might be just me!
@@KohleAudioKult Thank you, Kristian! I like the heavy doom/stoner style of production a lot, but I also like a slightly more modern sound when things get speedy
Me too!
I’m afraid you have to try!
Hi Kristian,
I really learned a lot from you regarding micing a guitar cab.
During Lockdown I also created my own IRs and I realized that the quality only depends on the Mic Placement (Es steht und fällt mit der Platzierung der Mikrofone ;) )
I only have the problem that I do not have a seperate LiveRoom in my basement at home.
Cheers from Germany
Christoph
You have tinplate very, very tight then.
I haven’t tried the 65. I’m sure it sounds quite different though.
Great video!
Did you try bass speakers (like the jensen punch from your bass speaker video) with guitar?
Yes. mostly too bright sounding, but maybe worth a video
How loud a cab must sound for recording? With a sm57 for example
Kristian, how do you feel about using test tones for aligning different mics?
You can use noise, but it’s better with a guitar signal because you will be able to tell if the frequencies that will be canceled out are imports or not.
U rock man! 🤘🏼
Was wär die Welt ohne Kohle ;) Thx
Pleite, hahaaaaa!
If the speakers duck, there’s not much you can do. Which speakers are in your HB cab?
When would you mic the back of an open cab? Would it be the same as the super balls mic ? I am enjoying your Eminence IR pack
I did a video about that on the URM Academy Channel back then. I think it’s called „you’re using the cab wrong „

"Angled setups are not that easy to recall"...[turns to Dynamount Control] :)
I mean I'm a fanboy of your stuff, I definitely learned also from this video, and I certainly don't question that one can get the same results with on-axis-only setups, but in the age of the Dynamount, the Fredman clip (and drag&drop 3D modelling & printing) is the difficulty of recall really a valid argument against off-axis setups?
A Dynamount makes the recall easy, yes.
But if you have a 5-10 mics setup, you’ll need a lot of Dynamounts for a full recall. 😳
for modern metal stuff, can't really go wrong with V30s (friggin Nolly...) but if i want to gravitate towards 80s and 90s stuff i would blend it with T75s, G12-65, or even K100 and maybe swap the V30 with Eminence Governor or WGS Vet30.
