Great tutorial. Question - did you shape the bottom of the bezel to sit directly on the curved base?

Definitely know what you mean about the shadow of the bezel messing up the positioning. I often use my dividers to scribe a very fine mark just outside where I want the border of the bezel to be, to help get it spot on, and then use binding wire to hold it in place. Borax flux can really lift it out of position when it puffs up.

definitely one reason I tend towards mechanical fastening whenever possible, hooks, pegs etc. I'm more used to boric/methyl + self pickling hard solder flux and that flux does it really bad, will even let your solder boil and swim on a layer of flux instead of flowing
