    Thank you for the tutorial! If the stone is rocking when I put it in and I put a thin piece of wire around the interior of the bezel to raise the stone to prevent the rocking, would I need to solder that thin wire in place?

    • @greggreenwood4628
      @greggreenwood4628  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello Courtenay, You are welcome. If a stone is rocking in the bezel, it means that the stone is uneven on the back.
      It is very difficult to determine how much and where the uneven area is. Instead of using a wire, it is better to either add a small piece of paper into the bezel cup to take up the uneven area or you can use an old trick of putting a SMALL amount of sawdust into the bezel cup. This will even out the uneven back and the stone will be more solid. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Greg Greenwood

    Hi. I've read reviews about thermal are being difficult to use, specifically when you're finished with your setting and you're trying to get the thermal lock off the stone. Is there any other product you would suggest? How difficult it is to use thermal lock? Thank you for your time.

    • @greggreenwood4628
      @greggreenwood4628  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Lori, Good question. I like Thermo-Loc because it does a great job of holding your pieces while working. I only use a heat gun on lower temps to soften it and to help remove from the work. There have been a couple of times some small pieces have stuck into a crack, but in general I have not had trouble. As a matter of fact, I've been thinking of doing a video on Thermo-Loc. So it is on my list. Make sure you subscribe and ring the bell so you don't miss it. Thanks for all of your questions. Keep watching. I hope to hear from you soon. Greg Greenwood

    Hi. Thank you very much for this video. I've had a few people show me their technique for setting a bezel, and every single person has managed to push the bezel wire too fast too soon, which creates a ripple or a wrinkle. There a solution is to file it off. I'd like to find a way to not use a file to sand off the silver to get rid of the wrinkle. Do you have any suggestions of how to get rid of a wrinkle, or better yet, how to prevent one? Yes, go slow be patient however, if you're dealing with those tight little oval tips at the north-south ends, how do you prevent those are the areas( I tend to get wrinkles/rippel in those areas).

    • @greggreenwood4628
      @greggreenwood4628  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Lori, You are very welcome, I appreciate your comments. Wrinkles in bezels come from the bezel wire being too tall for the stone.
      The best way to prevent the wrinkles, is to cut, file, or sand down the bezel to the correct height first. The bezel should be just tall enough to push over on the stone. It does not take much bezel wire to hold a stone in position. Use the minimum amount. This will also help with your oval tips at the ends of the stone. There is simply too much metal to fit into the small space at the tip. If the tips are too pointed, then you can file a small V shape in the bezel to remove the excess bezel or you can file a scallop shape into the bezel if it is a less pointed end. Just remember the old saying, "Don't try to put 10 pounds into a 5 pound bag".
      I hope this has helped you. If you have any questions, let me know. Greg Greenwood

    What guage is your bezel wire and is it SS or FS? What kind of solder pad is that? thank you!!

    • @greggreenwood4628
      @greggreenwood4628  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Renee, I use 26 to 30 gauge Fine Silver bezel wire. It all depends on the stone and the design. The soldering pad is a
      Vermiculite Soldering block. You are welcome. Greg Greenwood

    • @greggreenwood4628
      @greggreenwood4628  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Canadian, Generally I like to have a small girdle. 2 to 3 mm. Of course, the larger cabs normally have taller, but this leaves more of a chance for wavy bezels. The smaller the better! Thanks for asking. Nice to hear from you. Keep watching. Greg Greenwood

    Why do my pallians always stick to my tweezers? Even when my tweezers are immaculately clean, and using fresh unused pallians, they always stick to my tweezers every time, and I can NEVER get my pallians exactly where I want them. I've been using my solder pick to move em around, but if I barely even bump on that is already in place, itll bump all the other pallians off my joint. It's extremely frustrating. I've watched all your soldering videos many times over, and still haven't made any real progress
    Getting close to giving up

    • @greggreenwood4628
      @greggreenwood4628  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Red, Please don't give up. You are almost there!! Try checking the size of your tweezers. File them down to a very fine long
      point. The idea is to reduce the amount of surface of the tweezers that touch the solder. And, give them an extra quick filing right before you pick up the paillons. This will give them an extra cleaning. Also, don't cut your paillons ahead of time. Clean the solder strips with steel wool to get any oxides or grease off of the solder before you cut the paillons. Cut only the amount of solder that you need for the job. Keep your solder pick clean also. Any flux residue will make the solder stick. Keep on going!!!!! You will get it!!! Thanks for the question. Just found your site and thank you for this excellent videos. I do have a question for you. How do you address a cabochon that has uneven wall heights? I have watched numerous videos but have yet to find one that is an easy solution to this problem. Thank you in advance.

    • @greggreenwood4628
      @greggreenwood4628  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Pamela, WOW! Great Question! It is funny because I have been thinking about doing a video on this very subject. Now that you have asked, I will be doing a video about uneven wall heights soon!!! Make sure you ring the notification bell so you don't miss it. Now, in the mean time. Here is what I do for uneven walls. I am going to assume that you know how to make a regular bezel cup. Make the cup with the tallest bezel wire to accommodate your stone. * It is important to fit the bezel and make the cup first.* Put dental floss across the cup (so you can remove the stone) and insert your stone. Mark the areas on the bezel where you need to lower the bezel with an ink marker. Remove the stone. This step is where you can go in several directions. 1. File the bezel down with a half round file to the correct height. (OR) 2. Use a cylinder bur to bur down the bezel to the correct height. (OR) 3. Use an emery bur to bur the bezel. (OR) 4. Use a split mandrel with emery cloth on the flex shaft to emery down the bezel. With the cup already made, you do not have to worry about the size of the cup changing and not fitting the stone. After you have the correct height on the bezel, polish the top edge to make smooth and remove the emery marks. Put the stone back in the bezel (with the dental floss) to double check the height. If it is correct and you are happy with the look, then you can proceed to set the stone or solder to ring, pendant, etc. This technique has worked very well for me for over 40 years and it will look great on your projects. It is easy and will look very professional. If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know. I am happy to help. Thank you. Greg Greenwood

But, like all metalsmithing techniques, the more you practice, the more comfortable you will feel. Also, many great jewelry designs do not have stones in them. Ease into it and do easy sets at first. Take your time. It is not a race. It is a journey into enjoyment for you! If you need any questions answered in the future, please let me know. Take it slow and ENJOY! Greg Greenwood

Bend it to the curve that you want for your roller. Cut off about 18-19mm. Take another piece of brass rod (30 mm) and silver solder it to make a "T" . Use Hard solder. File and Polish the "T" to your liking. Then insert the straight end into a file handle and....Magic!! You have your brass roller. Much cheaper than you would have to pay.
