- In this video, Andrew shows you the correct way to solder a tube or bezel setting onto a ring. There are plenty of ways to accomplish this but Andrew shows you a neat way to restrict and limit the amount of solder flowing in unwanted areas and so reducing cleaning up of excess solder which always takes time and effort.

Andrew shows you many hints and tips that he has gained from his experience as a professional goldsmith.
Andrew Berry, a professional jeweller for 30 years, is the training director of www.AtTheBench.com, an award winning on line jewellery training website.
My great, great grandfather was a blacksmith. While I can shoe a horse and make harnesses and occasionally even make a knife I need or want. I will never know as much as he knew. But he was no silversmith. I am an American from Texas and I have lived in the UK for 20 years now with my wife who is a from Cardiff. She took me to a museum in London long time ago and I got to see the silver work done by the not so modern English Silversmiths. I was in awe to say the least. From that point on I have been hooked and learning and doing. Most of what I know I have had to learn on my own as I did not know where to go to learn such skills. But since finding your channel and I have been watching you for quite a while, I now know how many, many things I have seen were done. So much so that I am doing it myself and have been for a while. I never tried to sell anything and would not know where to begin by doing that. So, I make pieces for my wife. My wife loves copper and silver. Since we have never had proper wedding rings. I decided to make her and me a set with gems of course. Just put an order in with C&G for the silver and copper I need. Already have the gems. I just wanted to say thank you. I have learned so much watching you teach your skills and putting a lot of it to practice. I am confident enough now in my tools and skill to be able to make anything I can imagine. My wife would laugh at that as she knows I can imagine a lot. From you I have learned what I have been doing wrong and why some things did not work and of course proper technique and tools when creating a piece. Thank you sir very much.
It's good that anyone can go back to these old video's and learn something that maybe you forgot or when you want to know how it's done!....Andrew is the man, been watching for a lot of year's now...Thank's Andrew , Just keep on keeping on! GOD Bless....
Those tweezers are an absolute lifesaver, best tool I've bought in ages - thank you for the tip!!
I am so grateful for these videos. It is rare to find a true professional who is willing to impart their knowledge onto others, but one who is willing to do it in a way that anyone could understand is priceless. Especially in a profession that is notorious for keeping trade secrets.
Agreed. ❤️🌷
I bet it wouldn't look that easy if I did it. Thanks for all this, it is a rare thing to find someone willing to share what they know when they actually know something, and it is appreciated.
I’ve tried soldering before, using different materials and techniques, to no avail. Thank you for teaching us the importance of positioning the flame, closing the jump ring before soldering, and keep it CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN
I enjoyed you video very much! You answered so many questions as to how to set a bezel w /o solder prongs onto the setting. (It still looks hard tho) I ‘m not sure which way I will go yet, I need to try them both out, for awhile first.
The compound curve on the bottom of the tubing looks much easier, that is when you are doing it anyway!
But I really do think I can manage it now due your teaching.
I know that it would have taken me allot of courage to try that one either, had it not been for your instruction.
Thank you for pointing out the pitfalls for me. I am mostly self taught, so sitting under your teaching is such a relief!
People say that trial and error is a good way to learn, but I don’t agree. I think always having to bump into every wall is a very difficult way to learn and having someone teach me is just a pure joy!
Thank you so much Andrew you are a godsend!
Andrew thank you so much! I was the one who asked about the bezel and if you would wait and set it after the ring was made. I really appreciate the time you take to be so detailed and explain things. you cannot know how much I look forward to these videos. Thank you again for your kind generosity!
You have a great way of presenting & going straigh for the suject. Easy to under stand most of the time. I'm looking forward to more of ue videos.
I really learn with you. I was or am a member of At the Bench but had many problems to watch the videos. Now I will watch 1000 times to follow your instructions. Thank you for these classes. Is there a way to buy your videos???
Thank you Andrew. You make it look so easy.
Outstanding! Your teachings are clear and concise and completely understandable.
Andrew ... i am absolutely hooked with your videos. Just getting ready for retirement and always fancied a go at jewelery. Looking forward to more time to watch and experiment. Your techniques have already given me ideas for my model making where I use lots of brass and copper... and solder!! Keep it up .. your are a real craftsman... and still excited about what you do. Top marks
This is my third video in a row. My minds being blown. Appreciate this info so much ❤️❤️
Loving your videos! Thank you. I started my first ring since high school just today. That was over 40 years ago. Your videos will be a great help
you pack a lot of information/tricks of the trade in an intense way...no words are wasted-kudos to you to sharing your experiences.
Best soldering tips I've found anywhere! I'm ready to go back and tackle some unfinished projects again. You make it so clear and your tips are great.
Fantastic video, Andrew! OMG, I can't believe how much easier this method is than dealing with third hands and/or trying to balance the tube on top of the shank and try to keep from blowing it off with the torch the way I've seen in other videos! That Swiss shank tweezer; what a marvelous device! And it's absolutely brilliant to use the firescale to your advantage like that. I'm not afraid to try one of these any more; actually downright itching to do so.
Merci. Encore une démonstration clair et précis. Quel plaisir de voir les paillons fondre et « faire descendre » le serti sur le corps de bague. Magnifique , « gorgeons » comme dit Andrew….
Beautifully done! I have recently started silversmithing and I am grateful for your teaching!
Thanks for sharing Andrew. Your video's are great. I just graduated from a jewelry program and I'm finding your video's are filling in a lot of blanks on topics we didn't cover , or covered lightly. Cheers
As usual your quality of video, presentation and content are excellent. This video together with you’re videos ‘How to Make and Solder A Silver Ring’ ‘Cleaning up a Silver Ring, Removing Solder, Making Round and Buffing Ready For Polishing’ ‘How To Polish A Silver Ring’ ‘Soldering On Elements Onto A Ring - Making Silver Ring With Embellishments’ make an excellent basis as a project for the novice.
As a novice I would like to see a few more steps that would form the base for many projects, such as :- flush setting a faceted Stone into the tube, setting a Cabochon and turning the tube into a claw setting and setting a faceted Stone into it.
John Street We will be setting a faceted stone into the tubing in a weeks time 😀
Thank you, that would be most helpful. Look forward to seeing it.
So funny story. I purchased a swiss ring clamp and used it for the first time on a ring that I make. A tube soldered on the top of a rectangular wire. I was so excited! This device will make my life easier. No more last minute adjustments because the flux bubbled up and moved the tube out of center. So I place the pieces in this device, clamp it down, make my adjustments to the tube and proceed to solder.....and that's where it went horribly wrong. So I bring the silver up to temp. I know from the flux that the solder is about to flow, the silver relaxes and the ring starts to squish before my eyes. Seems I was a bit to over zealous when tightening the clamp! It's a mistake you only make once (hopefully!!!) Lesson Learned :)
Love love love your videos...very detailed! Please keep them coming....I am an aspiring metalsmith and would love to see more tutorials!
Video Ideas:
◇bezel setting cabochons and facited stones to rings/pendants
◇prong setting (using facited/cabochon stones)
◇ adding beaded/twisted wire properly around a bezel for decoration on a ring, pendant, or cuff
◇different texturing techniques for rings or cuffs
◇bezel/prong settings for post earrings (using faceted/cabachon stones)
Yes . Brilliant looking forward to watching more of Andrews tutorials. Clear and precise presentation. Thank you.
You're an excellent teacher. Thank you Mr. Berry! 😊
Absolutely amazing project. Thank you for your patience.
Thank you for your demonstration. I find them very helpful. I will attempt to make a tube setting using this method.
Hi Andrew! Thanks for putting the time into making these videos - great job. Also, thanks for mentioning the US when you're talking about products, etc. I have an idea for future videos. How about the "business" side of making jewelry. So many times that is overlooked in curriculums and yet it's so important. How/what to charge people. Do you advertise? Word of Mouth? Online? What if you make a mistake on their jewelry? What would prevent you from taking a job? How do you repackage (or do you?) to give back to the client? Just use a plastic envelope? I'm sure there's many more things to discuss. Thanks again. Also, I haven't gone through all your videos (yet), so if you have done this, please disregard this comment :). Thanks again!
Andrew, I am a very novice, novice. But that said I have learned everything so far from your videos. For that I thank you for taking the time do share your knowledge. BUT.....as an old Mechanic I have a suggestion of my own for you. The bezel setting your struggling to get a grip on, perhaps could be cut from the long tube after shaping it for the ring. Again, I have to say thank you for your great and informative videos.
Really well done video Andrew. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. There's a whole generation of budding jewelers and artisans who are eager to learn, and can't afford to travel all over the world for classes. Thank you
Carol Minnich thanks Carol. Please share on Twitter and Facebook so all these budding jewellers can take advantage. Thanks. Andrew
Andrew Berry Actually I emailed my buddies the email link I got from you.
And some of us budding jewelers are OLD. From this moldy oldie to you… THANK YOU!
Love this series. Thank you so much Andrew
BRILLIANT VIDEO! I am a jewelry student and I love your videos. Thank you so much! Looking forward to more. ❤️
Thank you, Andrew, you're ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!
I have applied your lessons about soldering on two wedding bands I'm making and have been successful by carefully following your instructions. Thank you.
HI ANDREW JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH US THAT ARE TRYING TO LEARN THESE SKILLS ON JEWELRY MAKING ,YOU HAVE A GREAT WAY OF GETTING YOUR POINT ACROSS AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND ,PLEASE KEEP MAKING THEM AS THEY ARE SO HELPFUL ,MY MAJOR PROBLEM WAS SOLDERING AND YOU CLEARED THE AIR ON THAT AND MY SOLDERING IS NOW 100% BETTER .BLESS YOU !
So glad I could help
So after watching this vid twice I have a perfect shoulder joint on my first ring….thank you Andrew Berry !
Many thanks for this video. I like how plainly you speak, and your explanations are full of helpful information. Yes, I am thrilled because now I know what I did wrong on my current ring (a lot of cleaning up of solder) and I’m excited for my next ring endeavor!
Andrew Berry you are a great teacher. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your in-depth lesson. I love watching your lessons cause it helps me learn how to make better pieces from minimizing the amount of flux and solder I used to go through and had to spend more time cleaning it up then I do now.
Hi Andrew..As a schoolboy i made a curved silver olive dish. My metalwork teacher helped me make a rectangular base for it, and covered the underside of the dish with engineers blue and all i had to do was position the base on the dish and where i could see blue, just filed that off and eventually the rectangular base fitted perfectly...Is this an outdated technique as it was 1968 when i made the olive dish?...Great vids Andrew and best instructor on TH-cam..thank you.
Andrew you are a brilliant teacher , kudos to you and so many thanks for sharing your amazing expertise.
Thanks so much for this, really well explained! I’d love to see how you make and set a prong style setting or a range of different styles 🙏
These are by far the best videos I’ve ever seen. I wish I had seen this when I was just starting ! So much info and straight to the point. It would have saved me so much time in the beginning if someone had stressed to not only have a great fit but also a very clean joint ! I’m going to look Into the membership.
You made this look so easy! But by doing that you make us eager to attempt this kind if double curved setting. Thank you SO MUCH for all the time you put into these videos! Although, I went to jeweler's trade school for 2 years, you have taught me more than my instructor...and you teach the correct way of doing things. That makes us all better jewelers! Thanks!
Thanks. Great content on so many levels: How to shape the tube, heating the ring holder, using the firescale to prevent solder from flowing to unwanted areas. Learned so much, I cannot count the ways.
Hi Andrew, just made a few bezel set rings and I had trouble getting the settings to sit straight on the ring. This vid was very helpful! Just ordered me a pair of swiss shank tweezers, never seen them before! Going to make my life a lot easier, thanks!
I really like how you show ways to reduce the amount of clean up time by using streamlined methods. So new at this and look forward to trying! Thanks :)
Thank you for the detail and clarity of your videos.
The best quality video about soldering I've ever seen. And really really well explained! Thanks for the upload!
I only found your videos two days ago. I'm quite grateful for what you do and how you present content. I've just got back to the bench after close to a decade and I have a lot of brushing up to do as well as learning new techniques. I was wondering if you have a video yet on sizing up a ring and how to handle two joints. Is it better to approach them one at a time, softer solder second? Or can you get both to flow in the same heating? Thanks for helping us all out!
Thank you Andrew. Very helpful and easy to follow your guidance. I appreciate it.
I have recently discovered your videos and have subscribed. Your videos are very succinct and clear. Thank you. I am relatively new to soldering and I am struggling to solder. Some areas include determining how much solder to use, holding pieces in place to prevent movement, preventing the piece from getting dirty during the soldering process, getting the solder to flow evenly. I guess, in general, I am struggling with soldering. I would appreciate more videos on soldering.. Thank you.
Hi Andrew, have shared this with friends etc....love your tutorials , excellent well put together easy to follow informative and enjoyable. Nicely paced never tedious etc..and yes, detailed. Many thanks Andrew. Please put more. Great teacher.
Great tips on filing both angles to accommodate the ring shank - thanks a million.
Hi Andrew, I just wanted to express my gratitude for your wonderful teaching. You make everything look easy and doable, and I am encouraged to attempt your demonstrated techniques! Thank you so much!
You make it look so simple. I can’t wait to try it. Thank you for this beautiful knowledge!
Wonderful style of teaching Andrew!! Thank you so very much.
Enjoy your teaching, thank you, I am retired and learning jewelry making is great.
Thanks Andrew, I really enjoyed your video. Good tip about solder not running onto burnished parts of metal. Excellent!
Good one!
I am starting to master soldering right now and your videos are very handy for me. They are informative and very easy to understand and reproduce.
Thanks a lot!
Fantastic video Andrew. I have recently taken a very strong interest in metal smithing and have learned so much from your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your extensive knowledge and fabulous videos. I look forward to learning so much more from them.
Again, presented with clarity. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I am in a middle of a project and this video has helped me so much. Very detailed and easy to understand.
Best teacher ever thank you
best jewelry youtube account out there! I don't have any idea why you don't have more views...? are that many people really not into making jewelry?
That, and people forget to SHARE.
This is a brilliant video. I really want to learn tube settings and will be attempting them when I go back to my part-time College course in a couple of weeks. Ive immediately placed an order for both the tweezers and the cutting vice/jig as they look like invaluable pieces of equipment. Thanks xxx
Great work Andrew!
Great presentation, explanations are geared to the novice . I have learned much.
Hi Andrew, thank you so much for your videos. Your explanations are clear and to the point and in detail. It is easy to understand for me as a beginner. Much appreciated! 👍🌻
It looks so easy when you explain it! Now to try it myself...
Good tutorial, thank you Andrew.
Fabulous teacher. Thank you .
Great job .....always had a hard time attaching bezels and tubes ...thank you for your process,it now works for me....
Many thanks Andrew.Very helpful indeed.
Andrew you are a money and life saver thank you I SO APPRECIATE YOUR THOROUGH EXPERTISE. Can you please show how to make a silver and turquoise single squash blossom? Thanks.
Thank you Andrew! What would you then set into the tube bezel? Will you please do a video showing us? I have a large selection of facets. I would love to see how to set them into a simple ring like this one.
I started searching this morning for a technique I want to try that seems simple, but I needed some details. I was not at all surprised to find another extremely informative video from you, Andrew. You answered all my questions. Thank you so much for making these videos! I am particularly interested in learning how to correctly solder a bezel set cabochon on to a narrow ring.
Hi Andrew! Thank you so much for sharing! I certainly learned a lot! I definitely would have forgotten to check for my join in my ring and of course that would have created a problem right off the bat! Again, kudos to you and all of your amazing videos!
Your videos are very good. You are an excellent instructor. Thank you so much.
Lovely job. Thanks Andrew. Great great films.
Hi Andrew I am a beginner and i have been following your videos you make it sound so simple. I would like to know when you are soldering brass on brass i have been using a silver small wire dipped in solder powder and applying to the ring and it worked but when it comes to a round then how do you do it?
Your videos are wonderful--Very detailed, full of helpful information you can only learn from experience. Very, very helpful.
Thank you Andrew! I've been looking for this exact thing and Melissa Muir posted this on facebook. Very helpful and so many tips! Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Love Love Love your videos Andrew!!!! Your tips and tricks are amazingly informative and helpful. Thank you!!!
Wonderful! Just the right amount of detail.
Thank you Andrew - very informative x
Andrew Berry "thanks Andrew, my soldering techniques are really improving since I follow your tutorials
Mine too! Andrew is a brilliant teacher.
Really appreciate your detailed tutorials. Fascinating. Thank you.
Great tutorial !!! Thank you so much!
Fabulous tutorial. Thank you. Can you please tell me what bit and compound you used for the quick polish?
Brilliant,I have just started watching your videos and am impressed,Iam also just embarking on jewellry making and have found these vids fascinating.thank you.
Very handy, thank you!! I'm currently trying to learn how best to set stones that aren't cabochons, so anything related to that is helpful!
Hi Andrew! Your videos are the BEST on gold jewelry making that I have found online! You are a blessing for sharing your knowledge and techniques. I am interested in getting started making gold jewelry also, but more specifically, I need instruction on creating the tubes that are used for tube bezels. Are you able to explain how I can form gold into a long thin tube shape? :) I would greatly appreciate it.
Gorgeous! This is very good info.👍 The ring tweezers are quite clever. Can they also be used to hold a prong setting in place? Also, are you applying some sort of compound to the bristle brush during cleanup when you are intermittently moving it away from camera view? Thanks!
Hey Tammy, I’ve just asked the same question about the compound on the bristle brush. Did you find out what it was? 🌸
I have a feeling that he’s using tripoli, that’s what he normally uses at that stage of the process
Fantastic, very informative tutorial. Thank you. 👍💮☀️❤️
Thank you for your films. They are very helpful and informative. 😊
Very thankful for the technique, its help alot for a beginner.
Can i ask what kind of flux are you using?
Thanks for sharing Andrew
Thank you for this video. Excellent technique and useful. I can’t wait to give this a go.
