    I have been looking for such review. Thank you, Jimmy. This has cured my curiosity about their differences ever since I purchased the LLL lens. The LLL performs admirably. I have the collapsible version with M39. It 's almost permanently glued to my Leica's because it's so dinky small.

    Thanks for the great review, it does show that with the ll8e they have achieved a true to the original version of this lens. I have a 1961 Leica 8e that much like the one you tested, was in a mint condition and recently CLA'd. It performs beautifully, but if I didn't already have it I would definitely like to purchase the ll8e.

    I have the ll8e and am amazed at the output - glad to see your review Jimmy because I sometimes think I’m going mad at how much I like the image quality and wonder if it’s just me! (I also shoot two Summicrons and a 2.8 Summaron and the lll8e still holds its place in my setup)

    Well done even toned review. I have a Ultron 35mm f2 and will probably keep it and possibly add the Apo-Lanthar 35mm. I like the smooth jazz background music and also enjoy watching the pooch running around in the back yard.
    I anxiously await your review of the 50mm f2 ridgid LLL as I'm considering that lens because the vintage Leica lenses all seem to have issues with hazing, fungus and mechanical problems.

      I am curious as to how the new Rigid will perform (not the Rigid-SPII). I already own the LLL 50mm f2 Elcan and like to see a comparison between the two. I think the Rigid will be slightly longer than the Elcan so not as compact. I had a Leica 50mm f2 Dual Range but it would not work on my M9 so sold it and got the LLL Elcan

    Really nice review, as allways. I have 3 versions of the LLL and this another good point for LLL: you can get them in black paint, chrome (real chrome), screw mount, collapsible or not. They are very very well built. I would also mention that you get some goodies with or can buy them from LLL, as for example black paint or chrome lenshoods, bp filters. I really like this company, the transport more spirit than Leica itself

    Did you have the Leica UV filters on the lenses when testing? If I'm remembering correctly, I saw a test that showed using a filter on the LLL lens would noticeably increase veiling flare, which reduced contrast and color.

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@settingofthesuns I learnt my lesson in my 35mm comprehensive review lol. No I did not. All uv filters decrease contrast and creates tons of ceiling glare. I consider b+w filters the best ones out there, but in the first testing scenario, it made the asph Summicron look like the 8 element 😹

      @@JimmyCheng Thanks, Jimmy! Goes to show how much variation there is out there for these old lenses. I love your comparison videos, this one no exception.. This is very informative and interesting at the same time.. I would add just a little from my experiences of using 6 copies of the original Leica 8E and 3 copies of the LLL 8E.. It is clear that the LLL 8E was born from reverse engineering of an early serial no. Leica 8E.. And there is quite a noticeable difference in image rendering of early vs late SN original Leica 8E.. Not a single Leica 8E was the same from my experience, in terms of sharpness, periphery rendering, flare , and image glow at high contrast lines. They may be due to CLAs, but I can say for sure that the manufacturing methods in the early 8Es and the later 8Es are quite different.. The really funny thing is that even the LLL 8E differ in image outputs because they changed the lens coating along the way.. And again, thanks for the wonderful video,, and hope you keep it up.

    thanks for the review, but would be better if u can show portrait comparison also. I think if u review LLL 50mm rigid, portrait comparison is a must. I remember, I bought summicron rigid after I saw thorsten ( portrait) review using that lens.

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SuwanditryTan thanks for the comment. I mostly avoid portraiture in lens testing because the way human brains work with human face is very different from anything else. With good lighting and a pretty model, you can easily distort the perception of a lens (no matter how bad it is). I was in psychology, so I’m hyper sensitive about this lol. Anyways, I’ll consider putting a few portraiture samples when testing the 50s.

    My experience with this lens has not been the best
    Starting with the fact that only one of the four was suitable for my purchase
    One had a focus ring with noticeable backlash, the second was not properly calibrated and did not focus properly, the third had sharpness issues and only the fourth was in serviceable condition but it did not focus accurately at infinity.
    I used it for about a year and recently sold it.
    This lens does have a beautiful rendering, but not the smoothest and most even focus ring travel, awkward infinity lock and severe vignetting were the reasons for the sale.

    Thanks Jimmy. Been waiting a while for a good review of this lens. I am on the fence about getting a zeiss C 2.8 or this. I know the images are different but i was still unsure about the LLL. I manily shoot at f8 and like the size of the zeiss. What would your opinion be? I can get either at a good price used. Thanks again!

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      these 2 lenses are drastically different. As you can see the LLL is even less contrasty than the original. If you've watched my 35 summicron comprehensive review, you know that the original 8 ele is already the least contrast of them all. Zeiss being a tad more contrasty than even the most contrasty summicron, it would be significantly more constrasty than the LLL. All those talk are about wide open though. At f8, any of these lenses are more similar than different. Size is not a factor here since this lens is as small as the zeiss. I would either pick the voigtlander 35 ultron or this over the zeiss personally for the larger aperture opening.
