I really enjoy this lens (V1 asph). It was my first Leica lens and I used it for over 10 years on my M6. When I switched to the M10R I noticed a slight Italian flag effect on my digital images. I can fix it with corner fix but I wonder if the updated version was made to address this issue. It might be the micro lens layout on the 40MP sensor. Not sure. Have you had that issue as well. Is it just the M10R. Nobody talks about it but for me it’s a small disappointment that you have to fix color shifts on a 2500 EUR lens. Keep up the great work!
@@markymark240682 what a story. I’m glad you enjoyed the lens and sorry to hear the issue. I’ve not encountered what you have described but Leica did claim the v2 has been optimized for use on digital sensor.
Thanks Jimmy! I’m about to replace my Zeiss ZM for the lux, what’s your real-world experience of focus shift on the fle?
@@ChristopherAndreou there’s none that I can detect realistically
why did you get the silver one on the black body?
@@Leander-tt9kg silver lenses actually pairs really well with black m11, because of that silver ring and button around the mount on the m body.
A very helpful video! This lens looks great and fits my needs. I don't care much about sharpness, but I'm torn between this one and the Leica 50mm f/2.5 lens. How do they compare in terms of atmosphere and color rendering?
@@markg459 I would definitely pick this one just for the size, price and a bit larger aperture. The 50/2.5 is also on the small side for a 50, and its rendering is very modern actually, but I found the vm to have even better flare control.
Like in every comparison you do you are able to make Leica lenses Look Bad. I Wonder if that is in purpose. I would like to know if These are unedited raw Images and would like to know the Software used.
@@elderinmoi1571 sorry if I made your fav brand look bad. Unedited LR raw files.
Right from the Intro Shots I could Tell that I did not like the nokton. Typical Voigtländer Color and Rendering. Looks like shooting a Film Camera with expired Film 😅

50mm f1.2 is better.
The sonnar makes digital look like film for me. I absolutely adore it.
yeah it does that trick pretty darn well
As does voigtlander
youre absolutely right about leica quality drops down last years . for instance in last two years ive had 6 brand new m11 of all modifications. 3 of them were defective hardware wise . same goes to lenses brand new luxes and apos ,. out of 7-8 lenses only 2 ! were fine 5-6 were defective or damaged upon assembly yet still packaged and shipped to me . 3 visofles 2 out of 4 were poorly assembled . its a shame I love the brand . love the prestige and rarity of . I was to never use any 3d party lens up to now . im sick of it . and have decided to buy 1-2 voigtlanders .
@@oshanefa it’s a real shame. Optically Voigtländer has bought up and even surpass Leica in some occasions. So really no drawback getting a few vm lenses.
Wonderful comparison ! Do you think Simmulux 50mm 1'4 Pre ASPH is worth buying if someone has Zeiss 50mm f/1.5 C-Sonnar ?
@@juyalgrafo4240 good question. I used to own a copy of brass v2 e43 lux. Sold it because it’s too heavy in day to day use. So I couldn’t really compare them side by side right now. I guess they serve the same purpose, but for us 50mm lovers it’s never too many. Anyways, I’ll do a comparison if I get the chance.

Hi Jimmy, I bought the Voiglander 50mm f/1.5 Norton for my M monochrom Type 246. The photos are very sharp, but Leica don't recognize the Voiglander lenses. I tried to set it as the Summilux 50mm f1/1.4, but it failed to capture the aperture setting. For example, the aperture setting is 1.4, and the camera data shows as f16. Do you have any advice to work around this problem. Thank you.
@@thng5141 this is not an issue with 6-bit coding. Even if you mount a Leica lens, the aperture setting was a guess work from the software. Leica lenses don’t have that digital info.
Thank you Jimmy

Hi Jimmy, out of curiosity, do you send your Leica cameras to Leica annually for annual maintenance? Is it necessary to do this maintenance to ensure the range finder works precisely?
@@charleskcyeung Nope I never had to do that. Neither cameras nor lenses. But again I own and test multiple copies of lenses and bodies so maybe my “usage” was spread too thin to have taken an effect.
dude, if you send your leica annually to maintenance you'll never see it again given support times 🤣
I bought this lens when I was in Japan and been using it since then, it's the sharpest 28mm I have ever used , considering the size of it, I think voigtlander has done great job.
@@y34r to the point. You can build perfectly corrected lenses if size is not limited.
I think that's the smallest difference I've seen so far between voigtlander and leica equivalent lenses.
…all true - or not! In 1980 I bought a Leica M 4 P, as well as a 35 mm summicron plus a 75 mm summilux to go with it. I don‘t own the M4P any more but I am still using my old fashion lenses, slightly modified (6-bit) now with an M10M, and there is nothing to complain about!
I’m considering a Voigtlander for my Fuji X-T3. Does anyone have any experience with that combination?
Jimmy, I've owned the Voigtlander 28mm f2 Ultron for nearly 2 years and its a fantastic lens. It gives an M shooter everything they need in a 28mm lens. I currently have the same black version you show in this video but I'm about to sell / trade-in to get the silver version of this lens to better match the aesthetics of my silver M10-R. I have the 35mm f2 Ultron and the 50mm f2.2 Color Skopar in silver so I might as well have a trio. I have all three Voigtlander APO lenses, the 35mm, 50mm, and 90mm in black and I'm fine with those being in black because I use those adapted to my Nikon Zf for portrait photography. The others are for my street and travel kit. I'll say this, the Voigtlander line of M lenses are fantastic and any photographer can get everything they need from them without paying the Leica tax for their lenses.
@@d.idowuolutosin4250 this is so true, especially considering Leica hasn’t been really on top of their game lately when it comes to lens design. The 35 summilux fle v2 for example, has no improvements over its predecessor aside from minimum focus distance. The Voigtlander 35 1.5 nokton is smaller, lighter, with smoother bokeh and better overall rendering. Heck even some Chinese lens manufacturers have managed to catch up.
I use this lens on Hasselblad 907x for landscape. Minimal vignetting at f2.8 and gone at f4. Great sharpness except extreme corners. And it looks better than any Hasselblad x mount lenses.
You should get the black paint LLL 28/2.8. Such a beautiful lens with a really pleasant rendering (the black paint is a bit strange, not so beautiful as the Voigtländer). Btw I prefer the Nocton 28/1.5 over the Ultron

Great video! Thx a lot! For my taste, I prefer bokeh rendering on Voigtlander lens
Oh MAN! The Voigtlander lenses for the M-mount are soooo attractive. Top marks, for their aesthetics. I wish they did the same designs for the Nikon Z-mount/F-mount. That said, i did buy the Voigtlander SL II - S for the Nikon f-mount and love the look, fit & finish, as well as their build quality.

I don't know if I will ever be able to justify a digital M since I'm retired. I use a Canon RF to M lens adapter for digital.Best wishes.
@@jayderose753 I think that is a sensible choice. Digital Ms are getting more and more close to any other mirrorless systems, especially with visoflex getting better and more popular.
I will always prefer a digital M if I can swing the cost. The size difference is noticeable for me when it’s around my neck, in my hands, etc. Taking both a digital M and a Sony to a convention, the Sony is more ergonomic so it “feels” lighter in my mind but carrying it around I just didn’t like its bulk and weight of the whole kit after a few hours. If it doesn’t bother someone though I would always recommend a cheaper, non Leica digital body.
@@Millicente try the a7cr, it’s small and light and shares the same 60mp sensor as m11.
I wish Voigtlander would ditch the silver rim. Does the Voigtlander still not have a soft stop at 0.7m focus?
Nope there is no soft stop. I personally like the steel rim design haha, it makes the lens feel a bit more premium. But I understand lots of ppl like a uniformly black lens barrel.
Only new voigtlanders have the soft stop
There is a little but subtle stop. At 0.6m there is a little click you feel and hear 😃 very subtle but when you know and hear this your got the trigger that you go beyond that.
If you don't like the silver ring, buy a cheap step up ring from 39mm to 43mm. It looks actually nice with that on, and protects the lens as well.

Leica is good for its fast optics. Medium format doesn't have this. Taking street photos is easier with M11. Hasselblad is better for landscape and architecture photos because of its better color (especially green) and stabilization. Hasselblad optics are boring compared to Leica, and new optics V are bad in everything except weight and focusing speed. Old Hasselblad lenses were and are great.
I’m very happy with my Leica Q2 monochrome cameras. I have two currently but I’ll probably sell one as I don’t need two anymore. I feel like the X2D is nice but kind of acts like a smartphone as you said. The Leica cameras make you feel like a photographer because they are so engaging.

Jimmy, great review. I picked up the Zeiss 35mm F2 in large part to your excellent review. If you shoot black and white and print in a darkroom the high contrast of the F2.8 version really works well . Would you consider reviewing the 90mm Voigtlander APO?
glad you enjoyed it. Hmm I'm not a telephoto guy so I usually don't do 75/90 reivews. But who knows, maybe in the future!
Hello Jimmy, with all due respect, with over 40 years of photography experience and having owned the Summilux, Noctilux, Zeiss, and even the Otus in that 50mm range, I can assure you that gear won’t make much difference unless you focus on composition, light, and story. Today, I keep a small collection of lenses after testing and owning many-from Switars to Berthiots to Angénieux to Nikkors. My advice: don’t waste your money or time comparing. Choose one affordable lens that covers most needs, especially in the 50mm range, where even a $100 lens can be excellent, and focus on creating great photography by exploring story, light, and composition. Good luck and best regards.
most definitely. All the differences we see are minimal when compare to lighting, composition and what not. That being said, the goal of my channel is to provide detailed comparisons of different m mount lenses. That is actually my hobby, more so than photography itself. I'm more into gears than art.
All the best!
He is not wasting Money or time. Its an experience for him and for us who otherwise will keep thinking more lenses. Your 40yrs of experience is remarkable with a substantial conclusion but following generation want to gain thr own experiences.
@@juyalgrafo4240 Sure, I was only trying to help. But I can say with certainty that you’ll gain more experience by taking pictures and making the most of the equipment you already have, rather than constantly buying more or comparing. You might even develop a unique style by working with limited equipment. The real dream is inside of you. And if you use the Voigtlander, Zeiss, or Leica all 50mm with the same aperture and similar optical elements you will see that the results largely depend on the moment you capture rather than the specific lens. Comparison is an endless road and subjectivity is the salesman's magic. We often get consumed more by consuming than by creating. Good luck and all the best!
@@EinsteinRiesenfeld Thank you for this insight
The biggest reason to convert in Phocus and export to LR, at least in my opinion, is the notably better highlight recovery. It's not a small difference, which is unfortunate because I hate trying to use Phocus.
oh really? so you noticed a much higher latitude when it comes to highlight when editing in phocus or using the phocus exported file in LR? I guess it's the former? That's something I haven't really tested as I normally expose highlight weighted.
@ Yeah, a good half to almost one full stop. I noticed weird artifacting when lowering highlights that were almost toasted in LR, but using the recovery slider in Phocus didn't have that issue at all.
@ that’s good to know, thanks for sharing!
Hakone rocks! I’m also using Leica M as my main camera system and newly invested into Hasselblad, 907x series for the look, weight and versatility. Haven’t got a chance to put the Hassy into real life use yet, but I imagine the system fits for cities like Hakone, Kyoto or 苏州, where a lot to play with composition than actions. 907x is a FUN system to use. For conventional street style snaps, M with manual A/S and zone focusing wins all systems.
I just don't understand why they don't offer the old metering as an option. And I'm really put off by the fact of the aluminium base plate. And another thing: this exposure mode will devide the shutter life by 2
I don't know much about lenses. Why do the book shelf pics look darker at 1.5 than 2 or 2.8? I always thought 1.5 makes brightest pictures.
@@lelandfitz1762 if you set the exposure constant, by closing down the lens, either your iso would rise or shutter speed will be longer. In this case, it’s darker because of vignette and I was comparing edge/corner sharpness in the zoomed in photo
