    As usual, the complaints about this list seem to be evenly divided between people who think they picked too much obscure shit and people who think they picked too much mainstream shit. How is this possible every time?

      you can't define a decade with 10 songs, it's retarded

    • @bossfan49
      @bossfan49 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. If you're going to attempt that, it needs to be broken down into genres....rock, folk, soul, etc.. Or best song from each year of the decade. All their songs are from 71, 77, 78, 79. Completely ignored 6 years of the decade.

  • @BuzzMcCallister

    • @nothingreally6680
      @nothingreally6680 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +AgentEpic Overrated doesn't mean bad. Also, there isn't a crap song in this video. Kashmir is more worthy than Prince or Giorgio's tracks, but there are dozens more songs that you could logically replace them with before Kashmir or Stairway are even worthy of being in the conversation. Opinions though.

    Knowing Pitchfork would stray from the norm and expected aside, this list is pretty good. I always feel its a little lame to think people can make lists like this and present them as fact, like this IS THE BEST SONGS OF THE 70'S! But there are some really solid songs on here other sources would have over looked, "Marquee Moon" and "Transmission"are incredible songs that deserve more respect then what they get.

    • @blodwynswayze1531

  • @xTheOxx
    @xTheOxx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    Listen, I love Prince, but I Wanna Be Your Lover should not be in the top 10. It just doesn't compare with what came later for him, unlike MJ's song on here, which still stands as one of his all time greatest.
    Stevie Wonder should be in there instead. The 70's were his decade, he represents the best of that era almost as well as Marvin and Giorgio. The hard part would be picking his best song. I Wish, As, Superstition, Higher Ground... ?

    • @felixucoff
      @felixucoff 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I Wanna Be Your Lover is a great pop tune, but it 's not "Top 10 songs of the 70's" good. Personally, I would've put some Steely Dan (Deacon Blues?!), Stevie Wonder (Songs in the Key of Life is from 1976), anything from Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan or George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, and Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are" on the list before Marquee Moon or IWBYL.
      Anyways, making a Top 10 list of the best songs from the 70's is obviously very hard and Pitchfork did a pretty good job.

    • @Adrianovaz2007
      @Adrianovaz2007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At least Superstition is on the list (top 50 I think), and two Moroder tracks plus another two he produced (I think he's the third most represented artist, behind only Bowie and Eno)

    • @blodwynswayze1531
      @blodwynswayze1531 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +felixucoff
      This is me second guessing them. They could put as much SD on the list as they wanted and I could only be happier. But that said I imagine their thinking went: Steely: too niche too "dad rock"; Dylan and Harrison, too stylistically tied to the 60s - backward looking; Billy Joel - no cool points.
      I mean where's the fricking ABBA?!?

    Bowie and Eno were the kings of the 70's (and pitchfork knows that), which is btw probably the most significant decade in terms of innovation in history. They were very influential in paving the direction of Avant Garde Rock and Electronica, along with the German Krautrockers as well. It's a fact that none of the other artists in the list are as influential.

    • @anarchypickle
      @anarchypickle 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The number 7 here is Prince - I Wanna be Your Lover, which is definitely not punk... if you meant Marquee Moon by Television, which indeed did come from CBGBs then you don't know punk. Television are not a punk band. Playing at a punk venue doesn't make your music punk, the Talking Heads aren't considered punk and they were CBGB steadies as well. Also, Venus de Milo on Marquee Moon is the best song on that album by a longshot.

      +octavechords The most overrated song of the seventies behind Layla. Though rightfully, that is a long mile between them since Layla is an abysmal song. BR is still good, but not great.

    • @octavechords
      @octavechords 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Despite the fact that Queen has been my favourite band for over 20 years, you just gotta admit it is a great song (it's not my favourite Queen song though). If we're talking about overrated, let's talk about 'Imagine'. I don't agree with this list at all. It's missing a lot of what made the 70s interesting: Eno, Big Star, Roxy Music/T. Rex, all the CBGB scene, British punk, Jamaican reggae, 2tone. It was bold to add Joy Division since it actually is really obscure for the 70s. But again, Pitchfork has managed to be 'bold' and 'cool'. And even though I love Bowie, you gotta pick one song or one by album since he was really doing great music.

    This is good for the popular charts (all of these being great songs) but I think there was plenty of smaller (or slightly smaller genres like prog, jazz fusion, and non-pistols punk) they could have included.

    10 great songs, excellent choices... But everyone's gonna have their own personal nitpicks, so here are mine: Trade out Joy Division's "Transmission" for Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and swap Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover" for Chic's "Good Times"/The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight". Those last two built the foundation of the entire '80s dance/hip-hop scene.

    Joy Division - Transmission
    Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
    Television - Marquee Moon
    Prince - I Wanna Be Your Lover
    David Bowie - Heroes
    Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
    Donna Summer - I Feel Love
    Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
    Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough
    David Bowie - Life on Mars
    (Fleetwooc Mac - Dreams is my favorite song. The others are a'ight.)
