A Guide to Tropicália in 20 Albums
Finally they do a decent article. There are great music out there like Mande music, Entechna, Andean Folk, Son, Polish folk, Nubian music etc. They should keep doing these articles focused on music that very few people listens, instead of always focusing on American-centric music.
The Letter Bleeds totally!!
os mutantchês
Enter para Sair se fossem do RS iam ter esse nome
Hahahaha percebi essa tbm
I'm Brazilian and I'm very proud of this video, thank you for spreading our culture out there :D
I'm English and these artists changed my life.
Tom Zé is a fucking genius, but a crazy kind of genius. People should listen to "Todos os Olhos" and to "Estudando o Samba". Both are masterpieces from his experimental mind. He's a sage with the soul of a child.
his overtly experimental recent album "Danç-êh-sá" is a rec of mine too. Crazy avant-garde hell.
Till Caetano's "Transa"?
It'd be nice if they provided a Spotify playlist or something in the video description.
Would've been better if 1. they had longer audio samples to hear and 2. included a Spotify playlist with said tracks/artists in description. Otherwise, great stuff.
Very good video. I didn't know about 'Os Brazões'. I would also include Caetano Veloso's 'Araçá Azul', released in 1972, a late Tropicalia album with great songs as 'Épico' with arrangement by Rogerio Duprat.
this is the best video you guys have done, i just wish you would've mentioned milton nascimento even though he was more in the MPB scene
Fuck yeah! Tropicalia rules
Caetano Veloso discography man, one of the bests of the world. I'm suspect. But
Brasiiiiil caralho
Nice list!
Just to be strict tho:
Novos Baianos are NOT tropicalistas, not AC&J either (although Lanny Gordin and Duprat worked on that album)
Notable absentees are Jards Macalé and Nara Leão, both involved with the S/T album
Wasnt Nara Bossa Nova though? Definitely not Tropicalia
@@bimbowithadegree420 she did some tropicalists albums in the late 60's
COME TO BRAZIL!!!!!!
Vidal Delgado dont!!! you getting robbed!

I heckin love the Tropicália movement, Tropicália ou Panis et Circenses is a masterpiece of an album and everyone should listen to it at least once.
In the 60's, just before the coup, Brazil wasn't experiencing an ecnomic boom, there was high inflation and low growth. Brazil experienced high economic growth in the late 50's, and early 70's, however both were unsustainable debt wise.
the brazilian music is formidable.
Very good Pitchfork! Got a nice summer tropicalia playlist now!
I fucking LOVE Gilberto Gil.
Trio Ternura got me here. A Gira 🖤 love me a new rabbit hole. Thank you François K and World of Echoes on Mixcloud and Sam Harrison
Great video but i just want to point out that tropicalia as a movement came to a close in '69
Yes it did but the albums post tropicalism are just as important as they kept the movement alive in spirit.
Great video!!! Please make one about Afrobeat next!!!
Viva!!! ❤❤❤
MeEu reFrigEradoOor não FunCioOoNaa..........
"Acabou Chorare" has nothing to do with American folk but with samba and bossa nova dude
Bob Dylan? He's folk and likely influenced Novos Bainos
foda, salve do brasil
Finalmente.
Great setlist
Love them
If you want more check out Brazilian Rare grooves here on youtube, lots of good stuff
Groopow Ows Mowtantjes, Jelbertow Jewl
do one for krautrock
do salsa or bossa nova next
thanks for that book report Timmy
COME TO BRAZIL
These guides should give a little more space to the music, so we can hear a bit more of what we are finding out about.
BRASIIIIIILLLLL
Love Gil
In a nutshell: go listen to Novos Baianos, they're the best!
brasiiiil caraaai
Transa é bom pra caralho. Cadê Jards Macalé? :(
rest in peace Gal Costa and Rita Lee

arnaldo baptista loki ...this is the end of trpopicalia..
Great for reccomendations but not very accurate, Tropicália didn't last that long. Mutantes was probably the last album from the movemnt featured on this list.
nice
rip Exotica 1952-2017 for good, here's its psychedelic af successor
OS MAIORES
that's how you say os mutantes?! wuh woh. this means i have definitely sounded dumb in conversations where i thought i was sounding smart.
damian zzz he is close enough... not perfect, though...
you say it "os mootuncheese" the double O as in "book" and the un as in "up"
No. It's pronounced as Rita Lee pronounces in this video at 1:12: "Os Mootunts" See: th-cam.com/video/lxGDRJgOEZA/w-d-xo.html
PISA MENOS BRASIL, EU TE IMPLORO 💚💛
ous mutanthes
Zoberdo gil
HUEHUEHUEHUEHUHEU
I've always pronounced Caetano Veloso's name as "Seytano Veloso" and Os Mutantes' as "Os Mutan-tes'
Jorge Ben's O Bidú - Silêncio no Brooklyn is a important album ta what Tropicalismo would be.
The US was upset Brazilian politics weren't going their way so they *RIGGED OUR POLITICAL PROCESS* and prompted a coup.
who knows, maybe there'll be an american Tropicalia.
so glad you guys can appreciate the music and the amusing, casual history.
Just when you think pitchfork can't get any more pretentious...they give us this gem❤️
What's pretentious about this?
anything non-anglo is PRETENTIOUS
