I like that now we have 3 types of Darkin in game: Aarox - the one that has fully taken over his hosts body Kayne - Someone who recently got his weapon (Rhaast) and is fighting for dominance Varus - Someone who seams to have dominated his weapon (Darkin) since we never heart it speak also Rhaast uses Varuses name insted a name that would fit a Darkin making it seam like the darkin has been dominated.
Notice how both Aatrox and Rhaast have "aa" in their name, Varus doesn't. As Aatrox is called "The Darkin Blade" and Rhaast "The Darkin Scythe" implying the Darkin are weapons . My theory is that the bow Varus wields is a Darkin, but that the Darkin itself is bound to that well by some magic so it can't escape go back in his normal state (being the bow), but that when Varus touched the well a part of the Darking returned to it's body, the bow and that the circle on the belt around his chest is where the eye of the weapon will pop up if it gets a chance to escape from the well and return into the bow again.
I have this idea that darkin actually also represent different parts of the body Rhaast - eyes Aatrox - blood Varus - The physical body (due to the corruption on his legs and wrists looking like its actually making a new body)
It could be pestelance, as his ablities are very "infectious". And it could also be explained why Varus says, im on borrowed time. Meaning that Varus is aware that he is slowly being consumed by the darkin weapon and that soon he will die/give in to it.
Pestilence rather. They seem to follow the horsemen, war, death, pestilence, famine. The next Darkin might have a draining playstyle, stripping your target of its power and infusing yourself with it.

My theory is that the Darkin are actually the weapons who are trying to take over a hosts body (which explains Aatrox' title "Darkin blade"). If you look at Varus' lower body half it is as if the darkin(weapon) is still trying to get him. Same goes for kayn
Spyros Gkanas i don't think anything is really canon right now, except from the newest lore. And if it would be canon, in which way? Wouldn't that mean without the skin he isn't really tryndamere? I think if he got corrupted by a darkin(revenge or wraith) he would look like demonblade
It is so obvious: Jax was so strong because he could manage over all the 5 Darkins (since he's the master of weapons), once they prohibited him to use the weapons, he hide them through the world but, the weapons thirsty of power, found other fighters.
Nebojsa Jeremic I thought so too. Aatrox has a great lore and character desigb however his gameplay is not unique anymore. So I hope his rework will make him more badass to be able to handle tough champs in order to reflect on his lore
Its not a rework, its just a gameplay update. They are keeping his lore, maybe changing a little couple things, but they are changing pretty much every one of his abilities to better fit his character, lore, and personality.
Nebojsa Jeremic Aatrox is a pretty newish champ and his visuals won't be updated. his lore seems to already be coinciding with rhaast so the only changes will be Aatrox's game play and varus' lore probably
Aatrox will get a full rework soon, its been confirmed, no idea when though. I doubt his lore will get updated just yet since it's fine as it is, darkin are still mysterious and we'll have to end up waiting for maybe one more before they start revealing their pasts and intentiions. Aatrox is not new, he's like 4 years old
i now that is in his lore and stuff but i play him and really like the sutain tank feel of him, but if they rework him to fit with his lore he would pretty much be a support and i really dont want that to happen

Boiled Dawg Dude, at first that seemed really stupid, then i realized that that would have explained Rhaast's confusion about the numbers. If 3 Darkin were in the same body, there would be three, but also five darkin, depending on how you count it. It's pretty much for sure they wouldn't go for that, but it would explain stuff. Well the Darkin were imprisoned in these weapons so something must have happened and also there must have been few, they really have to reveal more when Aatrox's rework comes around this year.

what do rhaast and aatrox have together? both have a double "A" in their names. And the fact that varus doesn't have a double "A" is that he wasn't originally a darkin, but got connected to one. If i am right that would mean that every darkin has a double "A" in his name. this results in the fact that varus aatrox and rhaast are the only darkins known.

I think Varus is corrupted by an essence of a Darkin. But with the amulet/ necklace thing its help resisting the darkins corruption powers. Sorta like Yorick and is vile is stopping the black mist from fully consuming him. Since the essence of darkin isnt that strong ( compared to the mist) he can control the bow, unlike yorick who can summon but cant control the mist. In regaurds of The demon pants quote, Rhaast says to varus is more of an insult towards the Darkin essence since he can't fully corrupt Varus.
ok. please hear me out on my theory. i do think that the darkin are initially the weapons, that take over a body as a host. with kayn, we have the choice to enbrace or renounce the darkin aatrox is a host completely taken over by the sword and varus did not give in to the corruption of the darkin bow since he is that determined to get his revenge

FenrisRM well technically the Darkins are the weapons, but I do think Darkins are creatures that are trapped inside the weapons. This has been stated on one of Kayn's Recall voice lines, Rhaast saying that why does Kayn flee, and Kayn replies mockingly maybe Rhaast got trapped inside the weapon because of Rhaast's atttitude.

How about this ides.Look at tryndamere when he ults,he has glowing red eyes and it is known that he was corrupted by aatrox.Now look at Jax,he has bright glowing blue eyes.Aatrox has red eyes and Kayn has blue ones,what if jax is in the same spot as Kayn only that he managed to overpower the darkin in his lantern at all times.What if those darkin shadows in his splash were the shadows of a failed darkin,or Aatrox trying to save his failed brother.Maybe it is a little bit crazy but it would be awesome to be true.
jax's lantern is just that. A lantern. His entire point is that he is the "super wow can use a weapon he's barely used and the still whoop yo ass guy". So he uses an ordinary lamp post as a "crutch" to himself to make it fair.
Jax has blue eyes due to being from the Icathia cataclysm and being infected by the Void. Same thing as Malzahar (And I would say Kassadin, but his eyes are yellow somehow?)

Would make sense if Varus ends up related to the Darkin, since they relate (until now) to the riders of apocalypse. The rider of death carries a scythe, the one of war carries a sword and pestilence a bow. On other sources, pestilence was originally called Conquest, and its rider used a bow and had a crown. Of course, riot may do a complete different thing, because famine should carry a balance, and a champion with a balance would be really bizarre, even for LoL.
5:50 now, with the new Varus-story that makes absolutely clear that Varus is the bow (th-cam.com/video/KnI4es0Bv8I/w-d-xo.html if you have not seen it yet) the "five" Rhaast mentions could theoretically alos be: Kayn, Rhaast(the weapon), Kai, Valmar and Varus(the weapon)... theoretically.However that would mean that at first he thinks Varus does currently exist without host and that would be pretey much bullshit. Now who are the other Darkins?I remember a demon of some sort killing Vaynes parents, but that is the only slight guess I can bring in.

Considering the recent lore update, I think that Rhaast's "3 of us....uhm 5 of us?" line to Varus might be referring to the two of them + Kayn (3) + Kai and Val (5), rather than the other remaining Darkin. The tone of it makes much more sense to me that way.
what if jax is same as kayn kayn has 2 forms: shadow assasin and darkin form. what if jax's weapon was also a darkin? as u can see, his eyes are blue maybe he destroyed the darkin inside his weapon which is the same thing from kayn when he choose the shadow assasin form where he destroyed rhaast. the darkins in jax's splash art must be hunting him because of killing their kind what do you think necrit?
Long ago, I had a hypothesis about the titles of Katarina: The sinister blade, Varus: The arrow of retribution, Jax: The grandmaster at arms and Kalista: The spear of vengeance reffering to the champions being darkins, but with the addition of Kayn's weapon the theory doesn't really make sense, as it would leave us with 6 darkins in total... Riot probably planned these 4 champs to be darkins, but later changed the idea. Anyways, I am so happy this little clue was finally featured in a video!

I think the theory of the darkins are the weapons themselves make more sense. Here are some clue, Aatrox has couple of lines as follow: "War revealed what is within "us"." "Teach them to fear "us"." "Surpass the frailty of your form." And those sound like the blade talking to the one who carried the blade itself. What's more,Varus also has some interesting points. "My arrows always find their marks."said Varus. Finally, Varus is dancing with his bow, holding it like dancing with a mankind. These are my view.

Something interesting is that there technically ARE 5 horsemen. They use to be war, death, famine, and conquest. Pestilence replaced conquest due to different translations of the Greek word Thanatos. It be interesting if they actually use the four horsemen and the forgotten horsemen as inspiration for the darken
The "Four Horsemen" is a misnomer. There are five horsemen, Death is the fourth whose shadow, Hades, is an unseen phantom and the one who ushers the dead to the afterlife for salvation or damnation.
I read a thing where the four horsemen were embodiments of corruption that "rode" on humans and other sentient lifeforms as their host. I think this might be similar to that. In addition, I think that the Weapon is the core of their being, and the corrupted Rhaast hasn't had enough time in that form to truly make the body his - after all, Aatrox doesn't give any hint that he's changed his body in the past forever, so comparing how Aatrox and Rhaast are with their bodies is like comparing a bladesmaster with a squire.

My current pet theory on Varus is that the ancient Ionian culture had access to magics that could break and bind a Darkin, and it's "essence" to another physical object. Varus was the most recent protector of a relic so powerful it had to be bound to a well. Though even in this form if an individual were to say, touch the waters, they would still fall subject to the influence of the weapon's body-snatching powers. Varus did this intentionally though, he knew the consequences of letting this power fall into Noxian hands. Instead he chooses to wield it in the name of vengeance, striking a bargain with a demon weapon (whether it took the form of a bow because it was a bow already or had no form is up to interpretation) to keep himself whole for the time being. His quotes have always been very melodramatic, but now it makes sense that he would be getting all of his fears and hatred preyed upon by a presence that looks to take over his whole body.
There are five horsemen of the apocalypse technically. There's War, Death, Famine, Pestilence and Conquest. At some point Conquest got replaced with Pestilence who wasn't really a horsemen originally. Also when looking back on somethings to refresh my head on this stuff, I now believe Varus to be Conquest or have the Darkin counterpart.
It makes sense that Varus is being corrupted by a Darkin because similar to how Aatrox is called the Darkin Blade Varus' title is the Arrow of Retribution. Which would imply that he is a weapon similar to how the Darkin might be weapons.
@Necrit One of the lines when Kayn transforms into the Darkin is "Destruction, Wrath, Fury as it was meant to be . Could it be that : Aatrox is Fury, given to Tryndamere , Destruction is Rhaast since he is the Darkin of death. Varus would be wrath because he wants the noxians who destroyed his village to feel his wrath .. ? Varus' passive is Living vengeance, could mean his bow is alive. As for the Demon pants quote, I think it said somewhere that Varus was fighting the corruption within and it would eventually consume him. Could be because varus wants to kill the Noxians and in doing so losing himself.
5 darkins are.. aatrox- the well known one rhast- newest known darkin varus - corrupted by aatrox blood well which is aatrox passive tryndamere - demonblade tryndamere where the animation of his blade is breathing and the blade ia attached to him jax - he was once corrupted by a darkin weapon but manage to fight it and never uses it again.. that's why jax sometimes said "imagine if i had a real weapon"
When Rhaast says: "Varus, the three of us, five of us..." I think it's refering to Aatrox, Kayn, Varus, the Darkin corrupting Varus and himself, maybe he is still not used to refer himself as "one" and takes into consideration that Kayn is still there, as well for Varus or his Darkin. It's a wild guess but it's one way to see it.
Three are Aatrox, rhaast and varus the blade. When Kayne corrects himself and says 5 he means he has included the two human hosts combined with the bow.
I like the fact that all of the darkins now have different roles. Aatrox as a toplaner, Rhaast as a jungler and Varus as an adc. Maybe we can expect an mid and support darkin from now on

The theory on Varus is that he is fully corrupted by his Darkin or he is still fighting his Darkin bow which is why he is partially corrupted. I was unaware of Jax's photo but he is probably being hunted by a Darkin because he literally needs a lamp post to not destroy everybody. Aatrox was a man who eventually lost to his Darkin and was taken over.
Necrit if the well that corrupted Varus is connected to the Darkin and that the Darkin are based on the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. So a Darkin infused well would represent famine since a poisoned well is something that would sicken crops and livestocks which would effect people. That actually does relate to Varus since his W is called Blighted Quiver meaning he follows the theme of pestilance and famine for the Darkin. One last thing to note is that in Varus' death animation, his bow stabs him through his chest similar to how Rhaast stabs Kayn if you go Darkin form. So my theory is Varus is not a darkin but instead unintentionally drew power out from the Darkin sealed in the well since we know Rhaast is sealed in the weapon Kayn wields and that it does seep into Kayn as shown by one of Kayn's arms. Varus is nothing more than what Kayn would be if he held on to Rhaast long enough without either getting full control.
When Rhaast says whatever he says at 5:54, he says "the three of us, I mean the 5 of us". Just a little joke about how Rhaast first counts himself, Kayne and Varus and then remembers Varus is made up of 3 people. Just wanted to clarify.
There are 5 Darkin because Pestilence isn't an actual horseman, Conquest was, but people thought it was too similar to war so they made it pestilence. Side note, Death had a scythe, Conquest/Pestilence had a bow, and War had a sword. the connections are really neat
some say there are 5 horseman of the apocalypse. you got war, death, famine, and pestilence, the "originals" , but you can also add conquest to the list insted of pestilence.
I think the blades are the darkins. if you look at Aatrox, he is one with his blade and share the darkin form while kayn is going under the transformation from the blade, the corroption starts at the hand kayn holds his blade and not only that the tranformation of the blade becomes the darkin while when he kneels he gets the shadow form. Aatrox one with the blade, Keyn is not fully corrupt and are in a conflict with the blade.
Interesting video, but there are a few things that I would like to point out: -I don't think that Varus is a Darkin... yet. I am quite certain that his bow is a Darkin, but I don't believe that it has consumed him yet. -Last I checked, the Darkin were originally living beings sealed within these living weapons.
i just realized that you know how there are 5 darkins well... A WHOLE TEAM OF DARKINS! if this is the case you can assume you can play them in certain roles so you can assume some details about the other darkins we don't know about.

I think that the weapon is sort of like a snail's shell for the Darkin. They *are* the body, but when that body dies, they retreat into the weapon to preserve themselves. I think that Rhaast probably had his own body at some point, but it somehow died, so he retreated into the weapon. Which in my mind makes sense as to why the scythe still keeps the eye when Rhaast corrupts Kayn. He still needs it in case he dies. There's definitely a plot hole regarding Aatrox and Varus, since their weapons don't have eyes (granted Aatrox's moves, so maybe it's just they have qualities of living creatures). Maybe Aatrox just hasn't "died" yet.
My theory is that Varus actually overcomed a Darkin in the bow, gaining its power. Thats why Rhaast recognizes him as one of the Darkins. It will be possibly revealed in the lore update. Another thing is that maybe the well contained an essence of Darkin, released from a weapon (perhaps a bow, since it's the form of a weapon Varus uses?) and sealed in it? That's just how I think
Jhin is also a Darkin. The Mask at least. It's like Jack Of Blades from Fable. Whoever puts on the mask becomes Jhin. Jhin has a similar obsession with blood and death, sharing the sentiment with Aatrox and Rhaast that death and killing should be a form of art. When Jhin dies his mask flies off and explodes, because Jhin is actually the mask, which is actually a Darkin who is now looking for a new host as its previous one died. Of course I pulled this out my ass :^)

My theory is that the bow Varus wields is a Darkin, but that the Darkin itself is bound to that well by some magic so it can't escape go back in his normal state (being the bow), but that when Varus touched the well a part of the Darking returned to it's body, the bow and that the circle on the belt around his chest is where the eye of the weapon will pop up if it gets a chance to escape from the well and return into the bow again.
I have this idea that darkin actually also represent different parts of the body
Rhaast - eyes
Aatrox - blood
Varus - The physical body (due to the corruption on his legs and wrists looking like its actually making a new body)

It could be pestelance, as his ablities are very "infectious". And it could also be explained why Varus says, im on borrowed time. Meaning that Varus is aware that he is slowly being consumed by the darkin weapon and that soon he will die/give in to it.

It is so obvious: Jax was so strong because he could manage over all the 5 Darkins (since he's the master of weapons), once they prohibited him to use the weapons, he hide them through the world but, the weapons thirsty of power, found other fighters.

Aatrox has a great lore and character desigb however his gameplay is not unique anymore. So I hope his rework will make him more badass to be able to handle tough champs in order to reflect on his lore
Its not a rework, its just a gameplay update. They are keeping his lore, maybe changing a little couple things, but they are changing pretty much every one of his abilities to better fit his character, lore, and personality.
Nebojsa Jeremic Aatrox is a pretty newish champ and his visuals won't be updated. his lore seems to already be coinciding with rhaast so the only changes will be Aatrox's game play and varus' lore probably
Aatrox will get a full rework soon, its been confirmed, no idea when though.
I doubt his lore will get updated just yet since it's fine as it is, darkin are still mysterious and we'll have to end up waiting for maybe one more before they start revealing their pasts and intentiions.

Boiled Dawg Dude, at first that seemed really stupid, then i realized that that would have explained Rhaast's confusion about the numbers. If 3 Darkin were in the same body, there would be three, but also five darkin, depending on how you count it. It's pretty much for sure they wouldn't go for that, but it would explain stuff. I think Varus is corrupted by an essence of a Darkin. But with the amulet/ necklace thing its help resisting the darkins corruption powers. Sorta like Yorick and is vile is stopping the black mist from fully consuming him. Since the essence of darkin isnt that strong ( compared to the mist) he can control the bow, unlike yorick who can summon but cant control the mist. In regaurds of The demon pants quote, Rhaast says to varus is more of an insult towards the Darkin essence since he can't fully corrupt Varus.

FenrisRM well technically the Darkins are the weapons, but I do think Darkins are creatures that are trapped inside the weapons. This has been stated on one of Kayn's Recall voice lines, Rhaast saying that why does Kayn flee, and Kayn replies mockingly maybe Rhaast got trapped inside the weapon because of Rhaast's atttitude.

jax's lantern is just that. A lantern. His entire point is that he is the "super wow can use a weapon he's barely used and the still whoop yo ass guy". So he uses an ordinary lamp post as a "crutch" to himself to make it fair.
Jax has blue eyes due to being from the Icathia cataclysm and being infected by the Void. Same thing as Malzahar (And I would say Kassadin, but his eyes are yellow somehow?)

Would make sense if Varus ends up related to the Darkin, since they relate (until now) to the riders of apocalypse. The rider of death carries a scythe, the one of war carries a sword and pestilence a bow. On other sources, pestilence was originally called Conquest, and its rider used a bow and had a crown. Of course, riot may do a complete different thing, because famine should carry a balance, and a champion with a balance would be really bizarre, even for LoL.

Considering the recent lore update, I think that Rhaast's "3 of us....uhm 5 of us?" line to Varus might be referring to the two of them + Kayn (3) + Kai and Val (5), rather than the other remaining Darkin. The tone of it makes much more sense to me that way.

kayn has 2 forms: shadow assasin and darkin form. what if jax's weapon was also a darkin? as u can see, his eyes are blue maybe he destroyed the darkin inside his weapon which is the same thing from kayn when he choose the shadow assasin form where he destroyed rhaast. the darkins in jax's splash art must be hunting him because of killing their kind

Long ago, I had a hypothesis about the titles of Katarina: The sinister blade, Varus: The arrow of retribution, Jax: The grandmaster at arms and Kalista: The spear of vengeance reffering to the champions being darkins, but with the addition of Kayn's weapon the theory doesn't really make sense, as it would leave us with 6 darkins in total... Riot probably planned these 4 champs to be darkins, but later changed the idea. Anyways, I am so happy this little clue was finally featured in a video!

Here are some clue,
Aatrox has couple of lines as follow:
"War revealed what is within "us"."
"Teach them to fear "us"."
"Surpass the frailty of your form."
And those sound like the blade talking to the one who carried the blade itself.
What's more,Varus also has some interesting points.
"My arrows always find their marks."said Varus.
Finally, Varus is dancing with his bow, holding it like dancing with a mankind.

Something interesting is that there technically ARE 5 horsemen. They use to be war, death, famine, and conquest. Pestilence replaced conquest due to different translations of the Greek word Thanatos.

I read a thing where the four horsemen were embodiments of corruption that "rode" on humans and other sentient lifeforms as their host. I think this might be similar to that. In addition, I think that the Weapon is the core of their being, and the corrupted Rhaast hasn't had enough time in that form to truly make the body his - after all, Aatrox doesn't give any hint that he's changed his body in the past forever, so comparing how Aatrox and Rhaast are with their bodies is like comparing a bladesmaster with a squire.
Remember the name of Varus's Passive? Living Vengeance, that explains it and what is changing during the activation of the passive, his Bow.

My current pet theory on Varus is that the ancient Ionian culture had access to magics that could break and bind a Darkin, and it's "essence" to another physical object.
Varus was the most recent protector of a relic so powerful it had to be bound to a well. Though even in this form if an individual were to say, touch the waters, they would still fall subject to the influence of the weapon's body-snatching powers. Varus did this intentionally though, he knew the consequences of letting this power fall into Noxian hands. Instead he chooses to wield it in the name of vengeance, striking a bargain with a demon weapon (whether it took the form of a bow because it was a bow already or had no form is up to interpretation) to keep himself whole for the time being.
His quotes have always been very melodramatic, but now it makes sense that he would be getting all of his fears and hatred preyed upon by a presence that looks to take over his whole body.
There are five horsemen of the apocalypse technically. There's War, Death, Famine, Pestilence and Conquest. At some point Conquest got replaced with Pestilence who wasn't really a horsemen originally.
Also when looking back on somethings to refresh my head on this stuff, I now believe Varus to be Conquest or have the Darkin counterpart.
This new character is so edgy that unless they use Crawling or Bring Me To Life as his (their?) login music I'd be disappointed.

@Necrit One of the lines when Kayn transforms into the Darkin is "Destruction, Wrath, Fury as it was meant to be . Could it be that : Aatrox is Fury, given to Tryndamere , Destruction is Rhaast since he is the Darkin of death. Varus would be wrath because he wants the noxians who destroyed his village to feel his wrath .. ? Varus' passive is Living vengeance, could mean his bow is alive. As for the Demon pants quote, I think it said somewhere that Varus was fighting the corruption within and it would eventually consume him. Could be because varus wants to kill the Noxians and in doing so losing himself.

When Rhaast says: "Varus, the three of us, five of us..." I think it's refering to Aatrox, Kayn, Varus, the Darkin corrupting Varus and himself, maybe he is still not used to refer himself as "one" and takes into consideration that Kayn is still there, as well for Varus or his Darkin. It's a wild guess but it's one way to see it.
Three are Aatrox, rhaast and varus the blade. When Kayne corrects himself and says 5 he means he has included the two human hosts combined with the bow.
I like the fact that all of the darkins now have different roles. Aatrox as a toplaner, Rhaast as a jungler and Varus as an adc. Maybe we can expect an mid and support darkin from now on

The Darkin take forms as weapons, and their one goal is to find a host that wont be destroyed by their power.(Thus why in Varus and Kayn lore you aren't supposed to touch the weapons) Kayn is fighting for dominance over his body with Rhast. That is why the eye is weary until he dominates Kayne's body, or it goes completely as Kayn takes control of Rhast. The theory on Varus is that he is fully corrupted by his Darkin or he is still fighting his Darkin bow which is why he is partially corrupted. I was unaware of Jax's photo but he is probably being hunted by a Darkin because he literally needs a lamp post to not destroy everybody. Aatrox was a man who eventually lost to his Darkin and was taken over.
Necrit if the well that corrupted Varus is connected to the Darkin and that the Darkin are based on the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. So a Darkin infused well would represent famine since a poisoned well is something that would sicken crops and livestocks which would effect people. That actually does relate to Varus since his W is called Blighted Quiver meaning he follows the theme of pestilance and famine for the Darkin. One last thing to note is that in Varus' death animation, his bow stabs him through his chest similar to how Rhaast stabs Kayn if you go Darkin form. So my theory is Varus is not a darkin but instead unintentionally drew power out from the Darkin sealed in the well since we know Rhaast is sealed in the weapon Kayn wields and that it does seep into Kayn as shown by one of Kayn's arms. Varus is nothing more than what Kayn would be if he held on to Rhaast long enough without either getting full control.
When Rhaast says whatever he says at 5:54, he says "the three of us, I mean the 5 of us". Just a little joke about how Rhaast first counts himself, Kayne and Varus and then remembers Varus is made up of 3 people. Just wanted to clarify.
There are 5 Darkin because Pestilence isn't an actual horseman, Conquest was, but people thought it was too similar to war so they made it pestilence. Side note, Death had a scythe, Conquest/Pestilence had a bow, and War had a sword. the connections are really neat

I think the blades are the darkins. if you look at Aatrox, he is one with his blade and share the darkin form while kayn is going under the transformation from the blade, the corroption starts at the hand kayn holds his blade and not only that the tranformation of the blade becomes the darkin while when he kneels he gets the shadow form. Aatrox one with the blade, Keyn is not fully corrupt and are in a conflict with the blade.

I think that the weapon is sort of like a snail's shell for the Darkin. They *are* the body, but when that body dies, they retreat into the weapon to preserve themselves. I think that Rhaast probably had his own body at some point, but it somehow died, so he retreated into the weapon. Which in my mind makes sense as to why the scythe still keeps the eye when Rhaast corrupts Kayn. He still needs it in case he dies. There's definitely a plot hole regarding Aatrox and Varus, since their weapons don't have eyes (granted Aatrox's moves, so maybe it's just they have qualities of living creatures). Maybe Aatrox just hasn't "died" yet.
My theory is that Varus actually overcomed a Darkin in the bow, gaining its power. Thats why Rhaast recognizes him as one of the Darkins. It will be possibly revealed in the lore update. Another thing is that maybe the well contained an essence of Darkin, released from a weapon (perhaps a bow, since it's the form of a weapon Varus uses?) and sealed in it?

Jhin is also a Darkin. The Mask at least. It's like Jack Of Blades from Fable. Whoever puts on the mask becomes Jhin. Jhin has a similar obsession with blood and death, sharing the sentiment with Aatrox and Rhaast that death and killing should be a form of art. When Jhin dies his mask flies off and explodes, because Jhin is actually the mask, which is actually a Darkin who is now looking for a new host as its previous one died.
