- From an early age, kids understand both simple and complex ideas of gender identity. They learn and absorb the categories we teach them, and then eventually find their place within, or beyond, these categories. The surprising truth is that we all know who we are from a very young age, including the truest expressions of our gender identity, and we then spend most of our lives searching for the words, tools, safety, and agency to share ourselves with the world. In recent years, we have seen more transgender and gender diverse kids exploring new words and models to describe their identities. In this talk, you'll hear about this gender evolution, including how to talk to and support the young kids and teenagers in our lives, as they lead the way toward a more expansive and inclusive future.

Dr. Angela Kade Goepferd (she/they) is the Chief Education Officer for Children's Minnesota, the Medical Director for the Gender Health Program, and also sees patients in the Children's Minneapolis Primary Care Clinic. Throughout their career, Dr. Goepferd has worked with and advocated for transgender and gender non-conforming youth and provide health professional training for pediatricians and clinic staff, social workers, school nurses and others to improve their skills and comfort working with LGBTQ patients and families. I’m 67. NB. I was bullied from the age of 6(actively) until 13; after that, passively.
For what? Gender nonconformity. I was ‘inspected’ by the girls in my 8th grade graduation class on the evening of the graduation, to make sure I wasn’t going to embarrass them. & I had at least shaved my legs….That really hurt. Still does. That was in 1969.
When asked if I was a boy or a girl, I’d say I was a tomboy, cause that was the only other choice I was given. (& the fervent hope I’d grow out of it) . Never did. Still an un reformed TOMBOY. & that means whatever I want!
Sorry but get over your insecurity, it’s called life and everyone has trama, playing a victim won’t accomplish anything. I was abused as a child, but I knew I wasn’t going to let it determine anything in my life. Kids need to be left alone until they are old enough to determine what they feel and want. Three and four year olds as this so called doctor says, do not have the mental development to know what they totally feel. They are more worried about coloring inside the lines. I don't understand why some of these people seem to think that children are capable of understanding the nuances of gender identity. Asking a child to explain something they don't understand is hardly what I'd consider a supportive metric for the trans community.
I keep hearing them say that there is all of this conclusive research to back it up and that the entire medical community accepts this as fact now. I'm still trying to find any evidence of that.
No one is asking them what them what gender they think they are. It is about being open when a child expresses them self in a way that is 'different' than societal norm. No one is jumping from oh you want to wear a dress as a 'boy' let's go get surgery. I also don't believe I heard anything about expecting a child to explain anything. Children are honest, open and curious. It is about not shutting them down because as the grown up it makes us feel uncomfortable or it not allowed because of unwritten rules that we have all grown up with.
On the application to renew your nurse's license there is now a question asking you for your sexaul orination. Why? Why does it matter to them?

I think if we all try to remain open to the fact their are many views people have on things like gender and approach from a position of curiosity, empathy and respect the humanity will advance forward and reach its full potential

I started this video with a curious and open mind.
Four minutes in and hearing Moppa state that a THREE year old knows when, the way that they feel inside does not meet up with other people's expectations of them. Well, I found it a bit of a stretch to say the least. It's difficult (and alarming when hearing it from a medical professional) to take a person seriously when they think that this is what actually goes through the mind of a 3 year old baby!
remember, affirming a child's gender identity doesn't mean they get top/bottom surgery or even any hormonal replacement, it's just allowing the kid to be expressive and see what's comfortable for them over time, you know?

I think we all forget the meaning of IDENTITY : “the fact of being who, or what a person is”. We miss the bigger more underlying point. Identify is more then gender. My now son was ask that question "are you a boy or girl" all through elementary school. He started his transition period in his early 20s. He's 32 now. But everything you've explained is exactly what he did. I wish I knew when he was young what was really going on. But GID wasn't even known back then. Thank you for sharing this. My own boys experienced something like this when they had negative comments made about their unicorn pants they wore to daycare. They still choose not to wear them because of how they were treated (the daycare did their best to handle the situation and it sounds like they gave a similar talk about how some people like different things and there is nothing wrong with what you like).
No they choose not to wear them because they are boys. Parents like you have completely dropped the ball in protecting our children from being sexualized. There are no doubt many many children who have been coerced and coached into non traditional gender rolls, having ideas pushed in their head at ages when they are completely vulnerable

Could you explain to me why this speech is delusional and depressing? Among many experts in biology and psychology, it is generally agreed upon that gender identity is socially constructed. Even without experts, you can see that society has defined what makes someone of any gender. Gender is a social construct, but the genitalia you are born with is not. However, genitalia constantly hidden under clothes does not imply gender identity, and genitalia can be changed.

Nobody is forcing an identity on anyone. It's completely okay for people to be the gender they were given at birth. Nobody is trying to change them if that's who they are. People are only trying to expand the children's knowledge so that they know about and understand people who's gender identity does not align with the one they were given at birth. The person in the video happens to have 3 boys who were assigned male at birth, which is a good example. I hope you understand better now.

This is so beautiful as I sit in the car waiting for my 17 year old grandchild who identified as male until recently visit a therapist for gender identity issues. He is actually wearing girls clothes today which gives me a lot of anxiety only because I am so worried about how others will accept it because I love her/him regardless if he identifies as male or female. It makes me so sad that he was admitted to the hospital for 5 days for depression and put on medication just because he feels different. I pray that society gives him the space to be whatever he/she decides to be. The world needs to become a kinder place overall and it begins with the adults. Thank you for the reminder.

I really liked this talk as it gets to the heart of the conversation... letting people be themselves and then supporting them, not trying to "correct" them. Such a simple idea, but very difficult for people to accept.

That isnt the same type of idea as correcting someones gender, as I don't believe its really possible to have a "wrong" gender. Love children as they are - such a simple concept, and yet so difficult for our society to understand. Thank you Dr. Goepferd for giving the world a larger box of crayons.
You're hurting them, not loving them. A child can pretend they have the ability to fly, that does that mean you should encouraged them to try and jump off a roof.
I agree wholeheartedly. I was raised extremely conservative, so I didn’t think I’d be able to accept, understand or empathize, but I do know that if we reject them as so many do it just causes further confusion, depression and even retaliation in some cases to dig in. I chose to live and let live and I can even understand how many cannot understand or accept it, but what I cannot understand is the judgment and hatred towards another human that doesn’t align with your beliefs. It’s tragic and sad.
By the way giving them a bigger Box of crayons is a lot heavier than carrying that small box; that they don't have to think about much...
So grateful people like Angela are caring about our kids and their ability to determine their place in the world. And despite the haters, as Angela said, "the world is changing." I want kids to be able to pick all the colors in the world to determine who they will grow up to be.

I identify as genderfluid and ppl always try to invalidate me, cause I’ve only recently come to terms with it, but I also only recently learned it was an option, but as soon as I understood there was more I knew exactly how I felt and learning about gender fluidity I just knew immediately that it made more sense for me.

They don't need a biased opinion they need a balanced opinion so they can decide what's right for them as an individual verses one side or the other based on facts and logic but not distorted facts but others don't need to agree with them they need to form there own opinion without bias so they also need to look at people besides these people. Because it's not just about feelings. They don't acknowledge the facts.
Children should take advice from people who who, at the very least, know how to use grammar 😂 I guess if you never learnt how to use a comma, then the idea that people may not identify with the gender prescribed at birth is too complicated

Nobody cares if you identify as something different. Just don't try to make the world acknowledge and validate you for it. But the classroom is not a place to talk about these things. It's for the parents.
It's a hard thing to not be cisgender. To not be accepted is a pain that nobody wants to feel. People who identify differently aren't asking for you to care a whole lot. Just enough to understand and accept them. To realize that you have a different gender than that given to you at birth is a struggle. It's confusing and frustrating. But it can also be wonderfully exciting when you finally figure yourself out and others accept you. It's a longing sort of anxiety to not be accepted and to be misgendered/mispronouned. It's a sharp anxiety every single time. It really hurts, and they wish they weren't different. But they are, and they have to learn to accept themself for who they are, in hopes that others will one day accept them. Are you telling people that they should just hide in the shadows? That they don't deserve to be acknowledged and accepted? It can cause depression and anxiety to not be, and to feel like you shouldn't exist, like you don't matter. It's a painful, painful thing.
I hope I've been helpful to change your outlook on people of different genders than those of there's given at birth. It can be hard to understand sometimes, but it's really best that we as humans are good to one another.

this is so beautiful and so well explained❤ im so mad at the comments of people with cishet privilege talking sh!t. especially their "what does science say argument". I hate it so much because its extremely dehumanising. science explains alot about queerness, but the fact that your very valid existence has to be proven by science for other people to accept you?? how about let morality decide instead? so a person doesnt have to live their life feeling tormented just so that they fit the binary of the world and make the world feel comfortable. in the expense of their comfort. you dont care about kids, you care about your own comfort thats all you care about.

You're right, it's difficult to have a healthy respectful debate, but how is encouraging non-binary gender identities bad? They are not forcing anyone to do it, they are just saying that it is an option and they took that option. Keeping them in the dark isn't being supportive. And you specifically calling out people calling this idea transphobes for not having a critical discussion when people in this comment thread are being extremely transphobic from the idea of it in the first place. You can't really say that and call yourself "pro-lgbtq" it's the same as when JK rowling says she supports the trans community and has trans friends and then says the most transphobic stuff.
