Just a quick tip, pop that hood and raise it up. Saves a little tape, but more importantly allows easier access to the top of the head lamp. 👍
Kevin Vines wax is hard to clean up in engine bay
I was wondering the whole time why he didn't. As to the wax guy above... When did he apply wax?
And how would the wax get on the engine bay....(sealant)

this video was done in 2015, yet in March of 2021 these methods work today. My headlights on my 2008 honda crv were beyond oxidized, at night you could not see much light from headlights. I purchased the products shown in this video and did exactly the way this video instructed and lo and behold! My headlights were restored ! They look like new headlights! Wonderful products and great instructions from Chemical Guys. Thank you Chemical Guys for the products that work and the instruction to put to use for yourself. Truly works.

yeah, it fixes dead headlights, the best water on the market by CHEMICAL HOES
lol. The stuff works but it is imperative for thr vehicle owner to put a coat of wax on the lights after each or every other wash. The vehicle is being sandblasted by traffic in front of it. If the owner does not do that then the lights will fade a year after

I just finished following this video and restored my VW Phaeton headlamps. The Georgia sun was playing havoc with them and the car is 14 years old. All the dead plastic came off. I took my time and used the materials suggested in the video. I even bought the polisher. They now look like new. I am absolutely pleased. This Phaeton just turned 89K on the odometer, just had her timing chain and belts done, brakes renewed and she is ready for another 100k easy. Don't let anyone say the VW Phaeton is unreliable. It has been my daily driver since new and now she looks fabulous thanks to the Chemical Guys. If I ever sell this old lady, someone will get a beautiful example of an extraordinary car.
When I restore headlights I extend the painters' tape out 3-4" so that I can scrub all the way to the edge of the lens without worrying about the paint, and then when I use polishing compound on the headlamp I can also take the buffing pad all the way to the edge and not mar the paint, and then it also protects from any dripping of the uv-resistant clearcoat on the paint.
Not necessary you just gotta be more careful and k ow how to work the machine... I've been doing it for years and got their torq polisher and I love it to do headlights
@@jskallingtin It's not necessary until that one time you slip and wish you had put 30 more seconds into taping. It hasn't happened to me yet but I tape off further out regardless because it's good practice to do so.
Very good tip, also adding newspaper/newsprint around the light area into the body helps too. ;-)
Some comments indicate Chemical Guys are selling the world. I used the CG products I already have for auto detailing and it lasted 2-3 years before some oxidation returned. (No need to paint the headlights as other people suggest)
My Process: 2000 grit sandpaper wrapped around a sanding sponge, lubricated with any car wash solution. A 4-inch orange pad on a drill. I used a med-cut swirl remover (1st step) as the grit wears out, spritz with water and polish at high speed. Repeat the (2nd step) polishing with a finish polish such as Pro Polish 3n or equivalent. I finished the job with M-Seal and a coat of wax.
Most of these products are used for paint correction and general car care. Some headlight restoration kits come with a drill polishing pad and their brand of compound, machine polish for best results... This demonstrates you can fix your headlights by using most of the stuff in your detailing supplies without buying extra stuff. *No offense to Greg and the CG Team.

That looks really good. My BMW E36 headlights have these little raised pieces that makes it hard to sand and polish.
Got a call from a client who said they failed their MOT(UK thing) due to the headlights so went and had a look head lights faded, so a slight change to the way you did it, I clayed the light then V34 and then Jet sealed 109 to finish the head light and came up a treat and finished with V07 detail just to top it off. nice one for the guidance. improvise, adapt & over come. job done.

Hi Kim, we made the impossible, possible!! It depends how oxidized the headlights are, some headlights can't be restored, especially when they are oxidized inside and out. You have to be very careful with headlights, you can ruin them because the plastic is very thin.
Thank you for alerting me. I paid very close attention as the sandpaper was being used, the amount of pressure applied, allowing the paper to do it's work rather than trying to overwork it and not being aggressive.
The part that you really have to pay attention to is when you polish with a drill, which acts like a rotary polisher. Unfortunately with a drill there's no speed control, you could actually end up burning through the headlights. It's tricky, but if done right could make you a wealthy man : ]
Chemical Guys Being experienced with a drill, it can be tiring to the hands and arms after a while with extended use and consideing that it is necessary to have good speed control, so thankful for your help, I can see that the right kind of equipment beyond a drill would be in both my and my customer's best interest.

When I did this I put the tape out more than 4 inches so I could make sure to sand all the way to the edge without worrying about hitting paint. Great job! They look fantastic.

When you used the second sandpaper, you should have gone up and down. Since the first pass you went left and right, you can remove the sideways peaks even better, since you're going in the opposite direction.
that isn't right , anyone that does any type of paint and body work knows that, all you do then is create more scratches , the idea is to take away not add, think about what you just said

Quick easy $25-40 . I do em all the time. Some will come out like new If damage is on outside. Some get tiny cracks in plastic and that won’t come out. Comes with experience but you can tell right off if it’ll come out or not. Gives cars a lot better appearance for cheap and quick
I just use toothpaste, a coarse brush, a cloth, a sponge and some polish for afterwards. Works for me, so it should work for you and leaves you car with nice and minty X)
Edit, it might save you $50 as well, that is one expensive headlight repair kit, seeing as autoglym does one for $30, for everything you are selling plus the guarantee that they are a company that has been trading for the best part of eighty years! I have used many other products which are inferior, and every autoglym product I have used has been the bees guts!

I was sanding the orange peel on my repainted hood and i accidentally applied too much pressure and left some scratches. i used 1500 and 2500 grit with wet sanding but can i re-sand the hood again with 2500 to try to remove some of the left over scratches? im scared of eating up the clearcoat, or would i be fine with just a light sand ? Just restoring headlights, if you do that alot you get really good at it and can take on many jobs. way to many cars have this problem. all my 3 cars have glass headlights but some of my friends and family have plastic. Hi! That's a great question. The V Line Series is our complete compound and polish kit. It is our most versatile and comprehensive option and the full system removes anywhere from light to severe paint defects. V32 and V34 are compounds and V36 and V38 are polishes. They are sequential so the lower the number, the more aggressive the product. Next, we have VSS which is an all in one product. It fits somewhere between V34 and V36 and is for the detailer looking to purchase one single product rather than two or three. Then, we have All in One Polish, which is a polish and sealant in one. Not only will it cut away those swirls and scratches in one step, it will also lay down a layer of sealant to leave your paint with a great shine! I question the cost difference of taking my Jeep to you guys to do this vs purchase of a new headlamp assy. Seems like a lot of product I would have to buy if I did it myself. Plus the work involved.
I live in Southern Arizona and have been doing H/L Restoration for over 15 years. I have gotten to the point to were my customers want a maintenance free Restoration that last a verry long time.
What is your BEST UV Protective seal for H/L's that I can guarantee to last them a long time? More than a year.
Hey Don, thanks for watching. One item comes to mind, it's Carbon Flex because it's a ceramic coating that lasts longer than conventional wax and sealant coatings. Carbon Flex has a life span of up to two years, and is the best possible protection that we have to offer. You should still apply a sealant and wax to help prevent oxidation. use the cordless small ones,they have no more than 1k-2k rpms and you can blast it on max and keep it there.

How much pressure Is needed if I do it with a drill? I tried today with 800, 1200, 2000 but when I tried to sandpaper the headlights the drill moved all the way, pretty difficult and also happened with the compound, what you guys think? Really need help, did I miss pressure or was it too much? Or the drill has too much power? I am totally confused with what happened HEEEEEEEELP!!

Hey I purchased the kit and I know you say that it should be able to do 40 cars, but how do I reuse the sandpaper after I peel it off and switch to 3500. Also sandpaper says 2000 and 3000, not 2500 and 3500?

The drill is better to use but they both work..the rotary drill is variable speed

MechanteTV I used chemical guys headlight restore kit and used the porter cable DA with 3" backing plate with the orange pad V34 and black pad with V36 and finished with jet seal. Came out pretty good just had a light fog line in the middle of headlight that did not come out, but not bad. looking into dvelup headlight restore kit for the next one and will determine which one is better.
Can someone tell me if this same finish be accomplished solely by ✋ hand? I'm not afraid of hardcore polishing and cutting by hand.
Before you put the sealant on, couldn't you put a 2K clear on the headlights to make it last longer?

Interesting question. The JetSeal is designed to last up to 12 months before reapplying it again. Depending on the condition of your car, we do advise in starting the process again. Quick analogy: you wouldn't put lotion on a dirty body, you need to shower first before applying lotion and keeping your skin moist and protected. So that's the reason my block cost 20 bux lol. Ya I been having a problem receiving the rt sand paper. The shipping place in PA. Keep sending me 2&3k not the ones ur using. And im in MA. Aking full 12 days to receive items. And still waiting for the brush and another pads. Ty maing u guys RocK....
The other reason for the increased price on the clay block is its longevity. When used correctly, it has the potential to last much longer than the traditional clay bar, so you can get many uses out of it. Also, when it is dropped on the ground, you do not have to throw it away either! Not sure about the sand paper... we offer a couple of different options of sanding sheets that I will attach below. Hi there! The sanding sheets can be used multiple times. We recommend using one designated sanding block for each grit.
Question: why not reapply clear-coat? It should last much longer than a sealant.

Hey Mark! For oxidation, compound alone is not abrasive enough which is why wet sanding is required.

Hi Nate, you sure can. Apply 3 - 6 dots of Headlight Restorer and Protectant to a light polishing pad and work over the part on speed setting 4 - 6 with a Dual Action Polisher, or up to 1800 RPMs on a rotary polisher. after the Jet seal wears off lets say 11 months do you add another jet seal or what ? do you have to go threw the steps once again ??
If the paint still feels smooth you can just apply another coat of jetseal. Claying paint will only remove what it can feel so you can reapply jetseal after you have washed and clayed.

Can you please explain why you want vertical and horizontal sanding but then use a circular polisher , very impressed with rezults just confused on technique
Hi James, great question. It all comes down to man vs. machine. We, as humans, are incredibly inconsistent. The speed and pressure we exert on a hand applicator pad is inconsistent and uneven, which is why you should use up and down motions. Machines, on the other hand, are very consistent and even and are always able to apply the same uniform speed and pressure, which is why it's ok from to go in circular motions. Hi Ted, you clean the headlights, followed by using the 2500 grit sandpaper, then the 3500 grit sandpaper. The v34 and V36 compounds and polishes can be used on headlights, and paint correction. In order to restore the clarity of the headlights, you will need to polish away the remaining deadened clear coat. If you watch the video, this is the final stage of the headlight restoration.

Would you ever start with a lower grit or starting at 2500 works for all conditions?
Starting with 2500 is recommended because it's not's the most aggressive sand paper available, you don't want to sand off too much of the headlight, just enough of the surface to get rid of that oxidized plastic.

Wetsanding: Like scratching an itch with your fingertips, but not a bad one. Compounding and polishing are more about just keeping the pad settled on what you're polishing. Don't push down, just rest the weight of the polisher or drill on it and focus on first spreading your compound with really slow rotations, then when it's even, begin polishing and gradually lighten your "resting weight" and increase the speed to buff. I JUST got the best results I've had, I'm not preaching how to do it I just want to share that success.
Many thanks for this amazing DIY. I've tried to restore my headlights at a shop but they used 500 then 1000 grit sandpaper which caused small scratches that didn't go away after polishing. After that I've used Wipe New which was great only for 3 months and faded again.
My question is: is it okay to sand the headlights again with the 2500 & 3500 grit sand papers again after doing all the mentioned above? And are you sure that will not be any scratches if it was applied correctly?

I'm planning to use Chemcial Guys materials but, just for final clarification, polishing the headlights after sanding and then applying the Jet Seal will remove all the scratches made by the 2500 and 3500 grit sandpapers? (Assuming applied correctly)
Sorry for questioning again, but I own a Mercedes Benz S Class and the headlights will cost thousands of dollars if missed up.
I'm going to make a video while doing the restoration so it can be a good reference.
