- We traveled to China to gather inspiration for our upcoming menu and we came across this upscale restaurant located inside a corporate business park. Everything on the menu was absolutely sensational, and with this particular dish, Drunken Prawns where they take live shrimp, add Chinese Mao Tao liquor and light it up to cook the shrimp, doesn't get any fresher, we get it. We're just not sure if the American public will get it... What are your thoughts? Please leave a comment below.

About Master Sushi Chef Hiroyuki Terada:
Master Sushi Chef Hiroyuki Terada is one of the top Japanese Chefs in the entire world and the most popular Japanese chef on TH-cam.
At age 10, Terada learned the basics of sushi from his father and then went on to attend RKC Chef's School in Kochi, Japan from 1987-1989. Fortunately for shrimp, they have very little thermal mass. Death by fire or boiling is pretty darned quick; much, much quicker than for larger animals, such as humans. If I were a shrimp, fire/boiling would be fairly high on my list of prefered ways to die, as opposed to dying slowly as my tail and internal organs are eaten by a predator, then left to die slowly on the ocean floor, or swallowed whole and slowly being digested in the stomach acid of a large predator.
If you eat crabs, oysters, mussels, clams, they are all boiled/steamed alive. Again, thanks to their fairly low thermal mass, it's pretty quick. I'm really not sure how they chop off the tails of the raw frozen shrimp you can buy, but I suspect the head and torso spend quite a while writhing around before they finally die. Seriously, for these kinds of animals, steaming/boiling is probably one of the quickest, cleanest deaths they can hope for.

Chinese cooking uses live seafood so that they stay fresh as long as possible so that you don't die of food poisoning.
In my home country we eat seafood and we cook it when it’s already dead and I’ve never ever heard one person get food poisoning haha come on, literally my friend has a seafood restaurant and they sell shellfish and they’ve never boiled /burn anything alive and they’ve literally had no cases of food poisoning from customers which many of them are regulars. I do understand the shellfish have to be cooked soon after dying but let’s be honest and it’s not necessary to burn or boil them alive, spreading misinformation or blatant lies ain’t cool.

Boiling lobster alive has been illegal in the United States for 20 years, and more recently in Switzerland because it's inhumane. I'm all for eating animals and ultimately that means I'm for killing animals but torturing them just seems unnecessary.

For anyone who wonders why they cook them alive: 1. the shrimps are kept alive so they can drink the alcohol they were submerged in, thus the shrimp are full of Chinese liquor fragrance. 2. In China it is a common practice for sea food restaurants to kill the sea food when customer orders to keep the freshness of the food, same idea of "fresh catch of the day", but to a different level. The restaurant could have submerge the shrimps first and then kill them and then set them on fire, but doing it the way in the video would show customer directly how fresh their shrimps are and attract more customer and also tastes better:). Still, say whatever you want about this, people are just different, same thing when some Chinese people don't understand how could westerners could eat raw, bleeding steak, and think that is barbaric
Agreed. When I first knew westerners eat raw steak I was shocked and thought that's what ancient humans did because millions of years ago they were not able to efficiently make fire to cook. But now I got used to that.

Shrimp and crabs and lobster do not have nerve endings. It's something that we learned in marine biology in high school. They are only the second or third advancement into having an exoskeleton. Jellyfish don't even have eyes they are just a mass that float around the water filtering out plankton. It reminds me of the time a lady tried to yell at me for chopping off my corgi's tail.(Pembroke Welsh corgis are born without tails and maybe one in 4 might have one).. kolex chill We are animals, but we have developed awareness and complex thought and emotion. Many animals that have evolved along with us have also learned some of it.
We have higher brain functioning than animals. Also, animals kill other animals out of necessity, because they don't have the brain power or motor skills/dexterity to plant and grow crops and harvest them to eat. Also, the animals that eat other animals are biologically built to be carnivores, humans however are not.
We have the higher thinking and reasoning skills to realize that murdering other living beings for purely selfish reasons is not okay. Yet we do it anyway, that is why humans are barbaric, and it's wrong to eat other living beings when we have some many other (healthier) options.
