Frank has been acclaimed as a genius for his versatility. He was a brilliant guitarist, a superb composer, a matchless bandleader, a movie producer, a record company executive, a human rights activist and an incomparable social satirist. His solo work encompassed everything from jazz-rock to orchestral pieces. He was a prolific workaholic who left behind a staggering body of work...a true genius!

I've been listening Zappa´s music for a bit over 50 years now and never get tired of it. Not one second. My gratitude for how he enriched my life has no limit. I'm so glad that you appreciate his talent as a musician, as a guitar player and, why not, as an entertainer 🙂
Bozzio later replaced Bruford in UK. Tommy Mars is great on keys. Patrick O'Hearn on bass. Frank was once asked if he hated gays. He responded "have you met my road manager?" Frank had no issues with anyones sexuality. It was all in fun.
I'm gay and I love this song, "Bobby Brown," and "He's So Gay." You can't be a Zappa fan if you're not willing to laugh at yourself because, no matter who you are, he will come after you eventually. He said in interviews that life wasn't worth living if you can't laugh at yourself.
@@L33ReactsDUDE you have to Google Terry Bozzio talking about auditioning for Frank's band the first time!! I saw an interview with Bozzio not too long ago reminiscing about this. He said he was at Frank's house and happen to pick up a publicity photo of Punky Meadows out of a box and made some random comment about it. The next day Zappa came into the rehearsal with the music and skit. Incredible imagination and work ethic. He also said that if you were going to do anything in Frank's band, you had to commit to it. Folks are saying that this is a dig at Punky Meadows from Angel. Its a dig at Terry Bozzio, that cute little drummer in this very video. The only possible dig at Punky is the way he pooched his lips for his publicity photo. The entire gag in this song is about Bozzio's infatuation with that photo and all the "Terry is gay for Punky" made-up storyline. Bozzio was really the one who had to take it all in stride because it was poking fun at him, and he had to sing it. More lore on this song as it relates to the origins of the famous Läther album. Because Warner Brothers took this song out of Zappa In New York, which was a breach of contract - they feared action from Meadows, even though he said he had no problem with it and would even sign a release. I think WB feared action from Angel's record label - as well, WB didn't pay Frank for 4 records that he presented to them, all at once, to fulfill his contract and walk away. Frank took his tapes to Mercury/Phonogram and made a deal to release a four record set, resequenced by Frank, some tracks added and some removed, titling it Läther. There's much more details to the Läther debacle, but I just wanted to point out that Punky's Whips was one of the main contributing factors in Läther's origin.
Probably a song I've listened to just a handful of times, but Frank always said that he wrote for himself and didn't expect people to like all his music or to like it at all. Frank loved to be entertain and to be entertained. He was always up for a good laugh. That being said, most musicians were dying to get into his band. It was kind of a university for great musicians, for most who joined and went on to do other things are some of the greatest musicians to come down the pike. Terry Bozzio being one of them, for sure.

This is from a time when all you had was rock n roll and Music magazines. Not even MTV. Kiss and bowie were on top. Angel was like the glam monkeys! Frank loved to poke fun at posers. Sometimes copying the tunes of the posers. Like Owner of a lonely heart by Yes. This stuff is the best to listen to. Fillmore 1971 w/ Flo & Eddie also hilarious!
This is some of the most intense guitar-playing of Frank's career. Hell, even Steve Vai said that Frank was on fire at this time. Well, my theory is that Frank was perhaps "competing" with Bozzio. After all, there was a LOT of young girls there who'd come to see the cute little drummer boy.....so Frank didn't want to get upstaged. So what did he do? He PLAYED!!
Bro no f'in joke, people don't realize how much that actually does affect the music and how in to it you get 🤣 women are the devil. Sometimes. And yeah frank was a FREAK here I mean damn. Leave some tail for the rest of us.
That song was the straw that broke the camel's back with WARNER BROS. records they cut it off of Zappa Live in N.Y along with refusing to release a 4 lp set named Làther... and it's a LOOOONG story that you should read.
Many people get the Läther debacle backwards. It went like this: Frank owed WB four albums on his contract and, because he was always recording stuff, he had enough material for those four requisite albums. He brought the tapes for four albums, those being Zappa In New York (a double album but considered one album for the purpose of the contract), Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt (so named by WB, although Frank intended it to be titled Hot Rats III - Waka/Jawaka - Hot Rats being Hot Rats II) and Orchestral Favorites. WB was to pay him $60K per album ($240K) and Frank would be on his way having fulfilled his contractual obligation to them and free to look for a new record company. WB breached the contract in a few ways. They removed Punky's Whips from the albums altogether and edited Titties & Beer, removing references to Punky Meadows. That alone was a breach of contract. They didn't pay him for the tapes, which he paid the up-front costs of producing the material, and fully expected to be paid $240K. With those breaches of contract, Frank felt he had the right to shop the music around to another record company. He still had his copies of the tapes and resequecenced the songs, removed a few, added more, including that signature "grout" between tracks, and that became Läther. He brought it, packaged as Läther, to Mercury/Phonogram and they were on board to release it. They went as far as making test pressings of it. WB stepped in and threatened them because, breach of contract or not, Frank was still their artist. In his way to give a big finger, rigid and stiff, to WB, he took those test pressings to KROQ radio in L.A. and invited his listeners to tape it off the air and to *NOT* buy the releases that would come out on WB. To further illustrate that the four individual records came first, as opposed to Läther being the original intention, if Frank presented all of it at once to WB as Läther, that would be *ONE* album and wouldn't fulfill the four albums owed so that he could walk away.
Man wearing a dress is Adrian Belew. An absolute legend. . Belew pronounced Beh - Lou. (rhymes with egg-shoe) They are satirizing, as FZ said at the top, Punky Meadows - lead guitar player for a band called, "Angel." FZ was a excellent guitar player but he was usually the weakest player in his band because he was hiring basically the most accomplished musicians he could find.
They just don’t do performances like this anymore. These guys are playing their asses off.And Yes, there was a bit of a beef between Punky/Angel and Zap. Probably Zappas greatest lineup. My favorite Zappa show for sure.So unique and original
I had no idea!!! That's so funny. I was just talking about him before and he was in this!! Such a good track. They were all so damn funny and so damn talented.
Yes Adrian Belew wore a dress. Other performers wear a red dress with a Fox mask. (went over the top of most peoples head - maybe even L33 - which has other meanings too)
ahh. the song he wrote to mock Punky Meadows, who is the guitarist for a band called Angel, who was the counterpart for Kiss on the Casablanca record label. Kiss wore black, and kind of heavy rock, and Angel wore white, and started with some prog-type stuff, then more rock. I really liked their first release, even saw them.
I was wondering the entire video who they were talking about lol. They went really hard on him 🤣🤣 I just posted your Jeff beck video. It premieres tomorrow morning too
@@L33Reacts Gee, I thought Frank explained it rather well in the intro, but no biggie. I thought this would resonate with a drummer and show you another example of how insane a Frank concert was, looking forward to watching you react to this. My next request will be strictly instrumental, something you have yet to experience.
Oh no I understood bro, I just didn't know who it was! I didn't think they were using his real name 🤣🤣🤣 it made perfect sense, though I just worded my answer wrong lol😊😊😊
Frank's son Dweezil did some great gigs in around 2007, I think, with a fantastic band doing Frank's music. It includes Punky's Whips - with Bozzio. I'd be interested in how you'd compare the two version, Lee.
Once you see a 1970s live clip of the band Angel you'll instantly know what this song is all about (Punky Meadows was the guitarist from Angel). Saying that, I have the first two albums by Angel and I think they're pretty decent. Think Kiss meets 70s Genesis. I know. That's what I thought, too, but it kinda works. The Angel 'white satin' look is pretty awful though, and they do look more like a hair-metal band from the mid-80s than a mid 70s rock bad. Angel never really took off, but those first two albums are worth checking out.
Imagine being handed this in sheet version by Frank and being told if you can play this you’re in the band. As silly as this song is, musically it’s as complicated as it gets. Typical Frank.
The line ‘Nobody is more fluid than Jeff Beck is an inside joke and has a double meaning. The first and obvious is about JB’s guitar playing. The second refers to an interaction between JB and a member of a female band that Zappa was trying to put together that JB allegedly asked the girl to 💩💩 all over his chest.
The background is actually as simple as it is presented at the beginning. Angel was a real band, they had a guitar player named Punky Meadows, he had a publicity photo of Punky with this kissy face and his lips were in a particular position. You can find the photo on the internet. I think I read the lips thing was from the habit punky had of chewing/biting the side of his mouth as a nervous habit, it became kinda a signature thing for him and it made him look like he was doing some kinda kissy face The rest is just a story made up about Bozzio’s homoerotic infatuation with the photo
Yea definitely making fun of the disco and 80s hair metal trends. There is a simple message in the lyrics what is truly amazing. The essence of zappa is it is purposely orchestral nonsense music that is from a music theory standpoint is incredibly intricate. Crazy time signatures weird keys and instruments really it's indescribable. Personally if I could recommend something to listen to it's take a few hours and listen to the whole Joe's Garage acts 1 ,2, 3. It is an incredibly odd and masterfully performed opera of what it was like to be in a band at the time
I played this for some friends of mine earlier in the decade. And they were rolling on the floor over the way that they were railing on this poor guitarist from this wannabe prog metal band from the early eighties, that was on the cusp of hair metal... They actually had an FM hit around here with the Tower, which was played significantly on a local station. They were just rolling saying. How did this guy ever recover from this kind of treatment! Lol. I believe the man wearing a dress is Adrian Belew, The hottest guitarist in the world at that time when Zappa was using him, Who ran back stage and threw on this dress and then went out to finish the rendition of titties and beer., That they were in the midst of doing and then finished the last mine of the verse as the girlfriend of the titled song. This song is probably the one that most people from this era screamed out when they saw Frank. And it is definitely worth a listen as it is in this version. Which I believe was on halloween 1978, From the movie baby snakes... A lot of the footage and tracks recorded at that gig became part of the actual album, Sheik Yerbouti... So you definitely have to listen to the song Titties and Beer from this period!
Yeah, David Bowie and Frank in the same restaurant with David Bowie. Trying to make nice nice with frank and frank keeps saying fuck you, captain tom! That zappa had demoted him instantly to captain tom and said it over and over to everything he said was so hilarious.. I think anybody there was like thinking o k Frank as balls the size of basketballs.
Angel was an act on kiss record label Casablanca they never really took off like kiss he was later friend with motley crew then died in car wreck I think
I'm hurting big time with money right now (tortured artist syndrome) so although I can't paypal you.... I WILL request something here. I'm sure you've started to notice that Zappa's music has many different faces. And it's time to introduce you to another one. The name of the song is "N-LITE" and it's only fair to warn you that it is long and very difficult for most people to listen to. It is ALMOST the deepest end of the Zappa swimming pool...ALMOST...there's stuff even more perplexing than this....but if you want you're mind to be blown....N-LITE is a pretty good place to start, prepare to be confused.
I haven't even heard of that yet lol. I will definitely add it to the list, sounds fascinating. Thank you for watching my friend! I really appreciate it.
You said your audience was not of this generation and not as tolerant. My dad was an airline pilot in the sixties when stewardesses were hired based on how good they looked in tight uniforms. He told me the airlines deliberately hired gay men as their supervisors because straight guys would let those beauties run all over him. Dad listened to Zappa all the time-----when I still lived at home.
I would assume, pretty safely I think, that you’ve never heard “Valley Girl” by Dweezle Zappa. It was a huge radio hit in the very early 80’s. Or maybe it wasn’t, I just liked it that much, I thought it was?? Anyways, I HIGHLY recommend it.
@@Alix777. Funny tidbit about that song. It was the only Top-40 hit that Frank ever had and never played live. Tell me any touring band who had a hit and never played it. Frank never expected its popularity. It was really Moon's vocals that sold it. He always invested the profits he made into new projects, and that sudden influx of cash allowed him to finally finish making Uncle Meat: The Movie. Made direct-to-video via his mail-order company, it actually kinda sucks. It never got transferred to DVD, if that can be used as a guage of its success (or lack thereof.)
Punky himself has said he loves rhis song. Angel was a group around 77-78.ish. Punky Meadows and Craig Goldie. Craig Goldie replaced Vivian Campbell in DIO.
For Frank Voice was just another instrument and words just notes. Important is been the sound, the ensemble. Sorry son, I'm a 67 years old Italian who met FZ only in 1971 at 15 years (as I'm from 1956). I strongly suggest to spend on Zappa all the time you can because his Genius can't be told only with the words. He was a Composer, a poli-instrumentalist (starting with drums like You did).. if I start tolking about his work I can speak for months. Just follow him, is unbelievable. Sorry for my bad English... You're in uSA, the best place to find him, still today. Ciao, Romano

That song was the straw that broke the camel's back with WARNER BROS. records they cut it off of Zappa Live in N.Y along with refusing to release a 4 lp set named Làther... and it's a LOOOONG story that you should read.
Many people get the Läther debacle backwards. It went like this:
Frank owed WB four albums on his contract and, because he was always recording stuff, he had enough material for those four requisite albums.
I highly suggest you watch this entire dvd Zappa's 1977 Halloween concert at New York City's Palladium Theater
3:30 that man is Adrian Belew, of King Crimson and Talking Heads, David Bowie, etc...
The object of this troll is in the title. Punky Meadows from 'Angel'
Must see all the show
I think I might just do it. Sounds like a good video right there.
They just don’t do performances like this anymore. These guys are playing their asses off.And Yes, there was a bit of a beef between Punky/Angel and Zap. Probably Zappas greatest lineup. My favorite Zappa show for sure.So unique and original
Zappa has an album called Shut Up And Play Yur Guitar, just sayin
You need to do "The Illinois Enema Bandit" from Live In New York.

The guy in the dress and helmet is Adrian Belew - who I think you've seen in King Crimson, Lee?
I had 3 8-tracks of Angels… I’d Love for you to check out, “the Illinois Enema Bandit”. … & … Bamboozled by Love
Adrian Belew in a dress and a helmet!😅 If you want to see Punky Meadows do The Tower by Angel.
I had no idea!!! That's so funny. I was just talking about him before and he was in this!! Such a good track. They were all so damn funny and so damn talented.
I’ve always wondered if it was a Halloween costume since it was a Halloween concert.
Yes Adrian Belew wore a dress. Other performers wear a red dress with a Fox mask. (went over the top of most peoples head - maybe even L33 - which has other meanings too)
Yeah that definitely went over my head bro I just noticed the dress in the beginning to be honest lol
@@L33Reacts Genesis, Peter Gabriel doing Suppers Ready "Live"
ahh. the song he wrote to mock Punky Meadows, who is the guitarist for a band called Angel, who was the counterpart for Kiss on the Casablanca record label.
It premieres tomorrow morning too
@@L33Reacts As far as I remember, Punky took it in style.. I mean, Frank made a song about him, how kewl is that? 😀
Angel had the glam metal look before glam metal was a thing.
So have you heard the album Bongo Fury?
I just found your channel so I may be way behind. Love seeing people find Frank Zappa
Frank's son Dweezil did some great gigs in around 2007, I think, with a fantastic band doing Frank's music. It includes Punky's Whips - with Bozzio. I'd be interested in how you'd compare the two version, Lee.
That your lipsync was hillarious.
Now you might want to jump into the world of Beefheart🥩🫀👁️(just saw the spotlight kid)
Hilarious!
Halloween 1977
Once you see a 1970s live clip of the band Angel you'll instantly know what this song is all about (Punky Meadows was the guitarist from Angel). Saying that, I have the first two albums by Angel and I think they're pretty decent. Think Kiss meets 70s Genesis. I know. That's what I thought, too, but it kinda works. The Angel 'white satin' look is pretty awful though, and they do look more like a hair-metal band from the mid-80s than a mid 70s rock bad. Angel never really took off, but those first two albums are worth checking out.
Adrian Below rocka

The guy in the dress and the helmet is Adrian Belew
Dude I didn't even realize till I watched it again this morning 🤣🤣 so funny. They were wild haha
It's a mini satirical musical number, the music is ok at best, but I like it. Weird, kinda funny and quirky.
Yeah that shit was hilarious LOL they completely leaned into the joke and I loved it lol
And even Steven Tyler will pay to see. 😂
I think I read the lips thing was from the habit punky had of chewing/biting the side of his mouth as a nervous habit, it became kinda a signature thing for him and it made him look like he was doing some kinda kissy face
The rest is just a story made up about Bozzio’s homoerotic infatuation with the photo
Always felt like this was a slight Queen Parody but maybe thats just me
At the time I truly disliked this track. These days, I love it. I find myself singing it all the time.
It is quite catchy. Frank was a genius haha
the whole movie is great. "baby snakes". check it out.
This makes me embarrassed that I ever picked up a musical instrument and thought I could play it.
I glad you re not a sheep , worst thing to be I m o !
Angel was an act on kiss record label Casablanca they never really took off like kiss he was later friend with motley crew then died in car wreck I think
Dude! You can't have 21 Pilots in the bkgd while listening to Punky's Whips or any Zappa.
Great song and great review and as far as todays climate most but not all men are KITTY'S !
Exactly lol I'm glad you enjoyed! ☺️
@L33Reacts Frank's guitar playing is so out of this world. I'm so glad I got to see him live 7 times.
This was from a time the world was free =)
Life is so strange.

My dad was an airline pilot in the sixties when stewardesses were hired based on how good they looked in
tight uniforms. He told me the airlines deliberately hired gay men as their supervisors because straight guys would let those beauties run all over him. Dad listened to Zappa all
the time-----when I still lived at home.
Is there a better band than this?
I would assume, pretty safely I think, that you’ve never heard “Valley Girl” by Dweezle Zappa. It was a huge radio hit in the very early 80’s.
Or maybe it wasn’t, I just liked it that much, I thought it was?? Anyways, I HIGHLY recommend it.
Valley Girl was Frank Zappa along with his 14 year old daughter Moon.
Dweezil didn't record that.
I was going to say that, hey people check your info !@@Royale_with_Cheeze
Very annoying and irritating song, like a Valley Girl is I suppose.
I want to hear it just to hear the vocals lol. I will listen to it eventually!
How long did it take you to memorize your fake Analysis? 😂😂
