On a Wednesday morning, the Home Office unveiled a plan aimed at increasing deportations of individuals with no legal right to stay in the UK to the highest rate in five years. This plan comes as a direct response to growing unease among Britons about the state of immigration, especially in light of the chaotic scenes witnessed in recent months.
To spearhead this effort, the Home Office announced the recruitment of up to 100 intelligence officers for the National Crime Agency. These officers will play a critical role in dismantling the organized crime groups that have been facilitating small boat crossings by asylum seekers across the English Channel. The small boats issue has been a thorn in the side of successive governments, and Starmer’s administration is keen to show that it has a handle on the situation.
