- Now that we are in the year 2020, Tim's inventive mind wandered off into ideas around 2020 vision, and 2020 hindsight. Consequently he has dug out some of his toys around the idea of vision. He has a wide variety of Fresnel lens toys in his collection, quite a few of which make an appearance in this video. There are also toys which magnify, an unusual cigarette lighter, a cup with a mystery image inside, and finally some fibre optic tubes. These bundles of fibre optic strands can simply be used to bring an image forward in space, but if the tube is heated and then manipulated, it can be used to twist the image, or even to magnify or reduce it in size.

We need a documentary about Tim’s life. This man is a legend and he deserves a two hour special. Such an interesting and fun person and a treasure.
No No, leave him be. The mystery adds to his persona. For all i know, he used to be the most notorious bank robber. One day during a heist things got ugly and he accidentally injured a kid. He served his time for that, but from then he made a vow on his honor that he would give up his old ways and dedicate the rest of his life to children.

Those lenses were used so much in the covers of ripley's believe it or not and Guinness book of world records back in the day.
I can see Tim as a bumper on PBS or Sesame Street or something like that.
I was dreading the 2020 jokes that I knew were coming, but the first one I hear is from Tim, so that's OK.
I got used to hearing them since September in my high school prep rallies. The announcers always address my senior class of 2020 as the ones with 2020 vision.

Many years ago I had a Saturday job as a shop worker when I was a teenager. I used to take out a shop order on my bike to an old man a mile away. I used to use the opportunity for a cafty smoke. On one occasion I went to my usual smoking point down a lane and discovered I had no matches nor lighter. It was a blazing hot day and I saw a smashed bottle on the ground and attempted to use its base to light my cig by intensifying the sun's rays. I honestly didn't think it would work, yet to my amazement.... it DID! I actually thought I'd invented something lol!

The multi-vision lenses are fascinating!
We had a huge one to enlarge the tv screen, back in the 80s
I just remembered that my siblings and I each had a little almost bottle-shaped transparent-brown Fresnel lens in the early 90s. We later discovered that when you hold the hole close to your lips and blow, it would make a low whistling sound, just like bottles.

The lens at 4:16 I just learned about on another youtube channel yesterday - it's an anamorphic lens (you might see anamorphic on the back of a DVD dor the screen ratio), what they did was use the cylindircal lens one way in the camera to shoot the movie in widescreen, but it squeezes the image into a square to fit on standard 35mm film, then you put the lens in the other way in the projector to stretch it back out to full widescreen. It also causes something called anamorphic glare, where the light glares across horizontally, which is often used for artistic effects (especially in space movies).
