  • Huge thanks to my friend Alex for letting me ride his bikes. He recently upgraded to a R1250GS and that was a very good thing, the newer bike improves upon an already amazing motorcycle.

    Great video! You had some very insightful comments about the 1250 vs the 1200. I was the original owner of that R1250GS and I sold it to Alex, and I realized I actually watched one of your XR videos a while back when I was trying to decide between an XR and a GS. small world!

    Love my 2020 GS. I feel bad for people that merely shrug them off as bikes for stodgy old men in neon clothing riding at 5mph below the speed limit. I ride mine a little slower than my s1kr, but I still have fun.

    When doing tours with buddies in distant places, I rent the bike. In Europe I can get the XR easily. In the US, it is unavailable through outlets like EagleRider, so I get the GS instead. The 1250 is much nicer than the 1200, IMO.
    As an RR owner and a lover of twisty mountain roads, I like the XR much more, though the GS is an outstanding bike. Here are the differences I notice:
    1. Weight. The GS is more than 50 lbs heavier, and you feel it despite the boxer’s low center of gravity.
    2. Front suspension. The GS has the duolever front instead of traditional telescopic forks. Duolever adds some stability, especially on long sweepers and braking (no dive), but at the expense of heaviness and lack of flickability.
    3. Engine. The boxer is nice and torquey, especially the R1250, but feels and sounds so agricultural relative to the XR’s inline four. And it’s not even about the XR’s greater power.
    4. Transmission. It’s nice BMW added up/down quickshifter to the GS, but it feels clunky relative to the smoothness of the XR.
    5. Brakes. The GS has good brakes, but I get better feel on the XR. Maybe it’s due to the lighter weight, shorter wheelbase and front suspension, but I feel a bit isolated on the GS.
    6. Suspension, seat and comfort. The GS’s longer suspension travel and more traditional and softer bench seat is a bit more comfortable on long tours, though I don’t share others’ intense dislike of the XR’s harder bowl-shaped seat. The downside of the GS suspension is a vagueness I feel in the twisties as the suspension moves up and down more.
    7. Final drive. Shaft is nice of a low-maintenance experience, though at the expense of more weight and lower power efficiency. Maybe the new no-maintenance ///M Endurance chain will be the final reason to ditch the shaft drive.
    8. Fuel efficiency/range. I think the GS and XR have similar fuel consumption when ridden exactly the same, but they never are. You ride the XR harder and open the throttle just to hear the growl turn into a howl and then into a roar, and thus you use more fuel. The big difference is in the much larger GS fuel tank, which gives way more range. Then you have the huge tank of the GSA that allows you to ride all day.
    The new-generation XR improves on the old in most ways. I like it a lot.
    BTW. Give me some twisty tour advice - maybe around AK, TN, NC/VA - given that you’ve been in the area (e.g., the Tail). I might trailer my RR there if I can get my buddies to occasionally swap bikes.

    • @CubanRider
      @CubanRider  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm with you, there's a reason I own an XR. But in this vastness of State called Texas, twisty roads are rare and it'd be nice to have a bike to pile miles on regardless of the road surface. The GS is so great because it's a jack of all trades, it can go almost anywhere. I'd love to add one to the garage in the future.

    • @CubanRider
      @CubanRider  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As per twisty tour advise, I'm not much of an expert as I stick to certain roads that I like, but some of my favorites are: US 129 (the dragon, obvious), Cherohala Skyway, 28 Bryson City Rod taking you down to Wayah Rd (th-cam.com/video/VQQy-sYdFmQ/w-d-xo.html). I also ridden and enjoyed US 421 (the Snake, southern VA), and would like to check some of the twisties north of Ashville NC. Blue Ridge probably has the best views, Hwy 60 in GA, and other amazing routes north of GA.

      Completely true.

    • @adammfharris
      @adammfharris 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Solid summary…
      I’d like to critique your opinion on two points.
      1) That is the first time I have seen a GS reviewed as “lack of flickability and heaviness” In mine and most other’s opinions, it is at the pinnacle of handling. And, yes I have years of experience on supersport bikes on the road and track.
      For the weight and the second to none ergonomics, the GS is a superb handling machine.
      2) Get rid of shaft drive??? Everything should be shaft. Yes, even supersport bikes. They don’t run NASCAR or Formula One with chains. Nope, if you are worried about power, add power. If you are worried about weight, cut the few pounds off by doing 10 minutes of cardio every day or changing frame material or lightening the exhaust.

    If you get a chance take the drive on 1431 from Jonestown to Marble Falls and many off roads. Beautiful rides and many twists and turns. Cow Creek road is incredible.
    I sold my Bike a few years ago as I lived in Houston and it just isn't a great place to ride. Now my back door is on some of the best riding roads. I'm considering fairly low mileage rides and occasional track days as well as occasionally taking my wife on a ride. Any suggestions on the perfect bike?

      Thanks Darin, I've been on those roads a few times. There is no perfect bike as everyone has different tastes, but a R1250GS is as close as it gets for most type of roads. However, when it gets really twisty and fast I prefer my S1000XR. 😉
