  • While building up your technical stamina is very important for any type of instrumentalist, your emotional stamina shouldn't be forgotten. As a concert violinist that is constantly playing concerts and recitals, at this point, my technical stamina is built into my musicianship. Nonetheless, my emotional stamina, my ability to connect with the music 100% of the time requires a more conscious effort.
Here's the thing: Once I've memorized the music, once I feel it in my body and it's engrained in my muscle memory, the next step is to deepen my relationship with the piece, broadening my emotional interpretation and really pouring my heart and soul into it. As you can imagine, this is actually really difficult to do, because it requires an emotional investment that can be incredibly taxing, especially if I'm playing several nights a week.
Of course, when there's a lot going in my daily life, emotional stress, disappointing news, etc., I use my emotions to connect with the piece and, thus, my playing becomes a healthy outpour and release of emotions. Even if there is a lot on my mind, I find playing the violin to be the space where I can let all that go and connect with something deeper.
If you're interested in learning how to build up both your technical and emotional stamina, stay tuned for parts 2 and 3!
