So I'm in my first year as Electrical Engineering major. I'm actually really bad at math but I really like math. The euphoria I feel when I solved a math problem can make me happy for the whole day. I have a lot of up and down in my life from dropping out of highschool and then coming back to get my Highschool diploma. And then applying to top schools in my country to get rejected 13 times before I actually accepted. And How my talents is actually more in Chemistry then Physics.
Besides all that, I hope I can enjoy Electrical Engineering because I really like playing with soldering iron and creating circuits.

I'm really happy that my university doesn't allow engineering students to pick your major at your first year (civil, mech, ece, bio). We all get to rank the 5 engineering programs (from 1-5) that my university offered after completing at least 8 of the 10 required first year engineering courses. If I was forced to pick a major right away, I would've chosen Civil, but during my first year I realized that Mechanical was better for me

I've always been a fan of space, but then I found out about environmental engineering and was originally super fascinated with the idea of it. I went on to further learn about the occupation and found out its not all I thought it was, considering in field work. Then, I debated mechanical, electrical, and aerospace engineering, in which I found out that you use a lot of both electrical and mechanical engineering in aerospace, so I thought "wow perfect, so I'll do aerospace and get to experience all of them." But then I remembered I'm still 13 and only at Algebra 2, and havent even seen a spec of physics. I know I want to pursue an engineering course, but right now I'm leaning towards aerospace or mechanical.

I’m currently a civil engineering freshman at the University of Texas at Austin. In high school I was exposed to civil engineering more than the other ones and my father also did civil engineering so I figured I would do it. Also UT is rank 8 in the nation for it which is pretty good. I still like parts of civil, but I’m now thinking of doing aerospace engineering. Civil is very broad, always in demand, and is generally a pretty solid major. The only downsides for me are the pay and the possibility of events getting in the way of the completion of a project. I like the idea of huge projects I can look at once complete and feel proud of myself for so there’s that. Now for aerospace this major combines so many of my interests in mechanics, aerodynamics, structures, and electronics into one major and the pay is pretty good. A lot of the research and development in aerospace is so interesting and I feel like I’m committing to something that takes humanity into the future. I wouldn’t be feeling that in civil. My only con for this is that it’s very specific and niche compared to civil so I would have more of a problem getting into the workforce and finding something there. I like both astronautics and aeronautics so I’m open to everything in aerospace. The thing is that in UT I’m already pretty involved in stuff relating to civil engineering and am working on a good amount of projects so if I switch all the connections and progress I’ve made this semester is out the window. I’m really stressed out about this any advice helps.

On the same boat, just that I am applying to college. I am not sure among civil, mechanical, and aerospace. Pros and cons to all of them. I like civil because I enjoy building house models (both on computer and in irl). Mechanical is broad so if I get a mechanical degree, I could work for aerospace engineering (I heard a lot of people are able to get aerospace engineering jobs with mechanical degrees) or any other related field. I like aeronautical and astronautical engineering interesting because I like learning about space and because it sounds cool. Astronauts usually have aeronautical (don’t know the exact name for it) degree.

I personally love it because u have more knowledge of different fields than just one. This comes with the downside that you arent a master in a specific field but in general u could say that the first time you specialize yourself is in ur first job. I ended up where I was due to my chemistry teacher enrolling me into the chemistry Olympics in 9th grade which seeing as I almost actively avoided learning about it outside of school mental I dropped out right after the introduction talks (thinking back I think I could have gotten somewhere if I actually tried but after seeing the look on the face of the girl which helped us with some example questions when I asked her what a mol was I decided it was not worth the effort and the trouble*) but I found the lectures very interesting and decided that chemistry would probably be the path I would choose. Afterwards I took chemistry and maths for my Leistungskurs**, failed both more or less due to a combination of not really understanding the difference between being able to understand and being able to recall reliable and my teacher (who I got in both math in chemistry), let's just say we were not compatible.
But I still found chemistry interesting applied for chemistry, then a friend told me about chemical biology which was extremely similar but had some parts in it which I found more interesting (and completely misunderstood) so I also applied for that, didn't get in at first due to my grades, then got in because somebody else did not take his place, had my maths introduction course in which I both learned more maths in 1½ days then I had in my entire life and refound my love for math, then later in the chemistry introduction course I learned that studying chemistry was apparently considered to be very hard and time consuming (considering the reactions of the people around me I was probably the only one who did not know this) and yeah, that's how I ended up in chemistry.
**Leistungskurs is 1 of 2/3(depending on you state) courses you have to choose for your two final years in Gymnasium (the German form of school not the one where you do sports), they cover more stuff and go more into detail on the specific subject then the regular courses.
*When I was younger I would often just say the answer to any question the teacher asked (not volunteerely just out of reflex) and it would be worse the more I knew about the subject and the more bored I got which seeing as I could often predict the questions ahead of them being asked even without further looking into it (I had a rather mint upbringing with both my parents being pretty knowledgeable even outside their fields and they also would always try to explain everything I was interested in which was basically everything except for analysis of literature.)

@@krysalaska9538 I'd look at how specialized those specialty programs are. If it's a sub-discipline of mechanical, then you'll get all of the core mechanical stuff and just limit yourself on which electives and capstone projects you can choose.
If there program has a lot of very specialized classes, then it might be limiting your opportunities out of college unless you can really make yourself stand out to get those highly coveted jobs at places like Lockheed, SpaceX, NASCAR, etc.
After you've had an engineering job for a few years, your major won't matter as much; your work should speak for itself (project management, leadership, reducing waste & costs, timeliness, ability to solve problems and think on your feet, good engineering judgment, etc).

I have a question, if you were to get the chance to go back in time and make the important decision of choosing the most suitable engineering major for yourself, would u prefer getting into a slightly different engineering major, such as Mechatronics for e.g. (since you said in this video that you were interested in Mechanical Engineering as well), or something close to a mixture of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering? I'm asking this because Im interested in both mechanical and electrical engineering and as far as Ive researched about all of this, mechatronics seems like the best option for mee. I have a question Zach, or if you don’t see this, anyone who has experience. I’m a high school senior at the moment. I’ve always been interested in math and science as well. I noticed when you were talking about what math classes you took and it made me think because I’m in grade level math. I’m taking pre calculus at the moment. My question is, do you think I will be able to pursue engineering with just grade level math skills under my belt, or is an engineering major something that you have to be advanced past your grade level to learn. I believe I’m fully capable to learn the math required if I’m able to take it in college, as I’m very interested in the classes I take and get A’s in my classes over my high school career. But I would like to add that I have taken many Engineering Classes, so I’m not worried about experience. But rather if I’m able to major in it without the prior knowledge. I now realize this is kind of a dumb question, but I would just like to be reassured, thanks!
