I'm a Mechanical engineer from Chile, i love designing but i dislike working for someone else dreams or inventions, i define myself as an inventor. Right now i launched My Startup IKESC Tecnología Marina, which is destinated to develop deep sea marine technology and i'm the CEO, so now i've been learning others skills and habilites but i'm still in charge of designing and structural analysis. In future i'll have to hire a mechanical engineer, i'm quiet excited. This is mainly because in my country most mechanical engineers only have options in mining industry as maintainence or thermodynamics, the only job you'll get as mechanical designer is designing piping... And for that life, i prefer dying 😂 so i'm creating my dream job in this third world country but with a vast sea. Wish me luck!😊 Greetings from Chile
The things you said are quite relatable. Contemporary mechanical engineers have to deal with lots of things in daily life & solving problems in multiple areas from design products, meeting, deadlines, correct communication for transperancy, facing misbehaviours of the people who works with you. Hello all the mechanical engineers out there a big shout out to you for not giving up and rising above all problems.
This video is as real as it gets and filled with truths throughout! I've had a similar experience as a mechanical engineer; a lot of things are out of your control when you work for someone. Like you said, relationships with coworkers are complicated and developing them is challenging yet crucial to success. I just do my best and leave the rest to fate. Failure is okay as long as you learn from it.
As a Mechanical Engineer, this video is comforting cause I go through all of this. It got easier when I learned that mistakes will be made, learn from it, and not to beat myself over it. Just gotta find a solution and move forward.
I'm in my third year second semester of my mechanical engineering degree and I've only recently decided to put my studies on hold for a year. I've managed to pass all my units and even do pretty well in a select few, but I always struggled to find motivation in what I was learning. I would study hard and complete a unit and then when the next semester rolled around I would forget most of the content and skills I had just learnt. This left me feeling empty handed and as if i had achieved very little. Also not to mention the work load is insane, at times I would see myself skipping lectures and tutorial classes just so I could focus on an assignment or project i had due. I felt as if I had no time left in my schedule to focus on any other interests. I hope I can eventually find something i'm passionate about in the engineering field as I would hate for the 3 years of hard work and money to go to waste.
Do mechanical engineers have the knowledge to invent new products? Like the guy in the Shark tanks who created the security camera, got rejected by the sharks but then came to the show as one of the sharks after becoming a billionaire selling those camera devices?
Thank you so much for making this video. These were the questions that I had when trying to figure what I wanted my career to be and I wish I had this video to present me with both the good and the bad to help inform my expectations of what day to day life will be like after school.
2 months into my first job after college. You hit all the hard realities I’ve faced the last two weeks, it’s been so rough. But I know I’ll push through. Even after 3 internships I still felt so unprepared for the adjustment.
Hey man I love the idea of mechanical engineering even more. Spent a lot of time doing programming stuff but this is literally solidifying my love for the job. You're grea tman keep doing you. Making other people's ideas work sounds great until I can figure out my own!
I'm 18 right now and about to start my mechanical engineering studies in 2 weeks. I have always known that engineering, physics, and science overall are things I want to do and work on my whole life. However, the stories about engineering, fun movies, and Colin Furze videos created a false impression of what mechanical engineering work is really like in my mind. Now, I am really scared that I won't be satisfied. I want to invent, work on difficult mechanical projects, and find solutions, but I am afraid that I might not be brave enough or that there are plenty of people braver than me, and it makes me anxious. If anyone has also encountered such a problem, can you tell me-is it just me, and do I need to stay confident and not let these difficult designs on engineers' computers scare me, or is it really as bad as I imagine? Thank you.
I'm on the path but from my unique desires, thoughts and projection in life, I'd say stay on dude. I'm 22, around 2 1/2 years in college, I've done alright to good in math and other matters similar with science, but never been that much of a wiz if you catch my drift. Based on what you've just said, you seem to be really good at that math & science combo, I think you'll excel, it's just a matter of a small push getting you going. Like he's explaining in the video, giving a real sense of what it's like inside the real deal so that you have a goal to go to. Based on other countless videos I've watched, in the general sense it seems as though it's 60% Office matter/ 30-40% hands on work, really for any engineering route. As far as the brave thing, it's 100% natural feeling uneasy during this time like I did until now recently luckily knowing where my strengths and interests may approximately lay. I may not be able to answer everything, but as a STEM interested student I can tell you this: you've got more time than me, find your goal or ="purpose" and keep at it, talk to other students of their journey because you soon find out everyone is feeling and acting the same way just like you, lastly is this pursuit for stem careers is more of a mental strain and having a "never give up" mentality. At least for me when compared to others maybe like yourself being good at math/science, you'll exceed. Just know that if you can get internships early, they are KEY when companies will look for your experience related to your field when you're done graduating. The more self-reliant you are the better. Hope this helps.
I'm also going into it, and I'm also nervous. Nothing will ever be perfect. Just try to be mindful of how much you enjoy your studies and projects. You can always shift your studies to a related field if the one you choose isn't right for you. The best thing you can do is try out things you think you'll be interested in.
If you're passionate, keep following your passion. It's inevitable that, at some point, you'll run into things you don't like about studies, or later on, your company or industry. But these are situations you can learn from, either to build your inter-personal skills, or to refine what you like / don't like about engineering. As long as you keep pursuing what fulfills you and keep an eye out for opportunities, you'll land somewhere you like. And then if you decide you don't like it after all, you can always take off again (which can be easier said than done). That's the journey of life!
1:40 tbh part of my reconsideration of this degree. i love the concept of engineering like the function the ideas the creativity but man sitting on my ass for 5-8 years just to go sit on my ass for more time just does not sound appealing. At that point id be staying around for the money more than the passion unless the job is insanely perfect. But idk I'm still in debate. Any advice or opinions on your job engineers currently in the field?
For anyone here without professional experience, much of the meeting/design review/performance review culture is generally part of the corporate work environment as a whole. Whether you're a mech e, software engineer, designer, or marketer, you'll probably have this same spread of meetings. As he says, it can be a drag to not have your say on the final product, but that also just comes with being entry level. Whatever your role, as you gain experience and seniority, a healthy work culture should mean your input becomes more and more valued and sought after over time (unless no one likes working with you). On a similar note, even as an entry level employee, a good manager will recognize worthwhile ideas and feedback and do what they can to get it front of the right people (again, dependent on the work culture).
Your engineering comparing video are very informative. Could you please do a video comparing computer engineering with electrical engineering; and a video comparing computer engineering with software engineering? Thanks.
I started out as graphic designers that has a wide skill set from graphic design to video editing, with a side love in engineering anything mechanical (though with no knowledge of mechanics). And somehow entered the knowledge of Education Technology, although those 2 knowledges work well together, but I end up working "with" people that has no knowledge of either that I have while being in a situation where it's crucial to have such knowledge.... I'm lonely.... at the end of the day, they either say "I don't make sense" or "I consider too much"
Amazing video my favorite one so far because of how honest you were. This is the best video i have seen about this topic. I have a question, even if you got an engineering degree and end up not wanting to be an engineer in the future after experincing what its like working as an engineer because of the negative things about the job you described in this video, wouldn't having gotten the degree still been worth it because of how valuable the degree is? Like wouldn't employers of other even unrelated fields want to hire you because you have an engineering degree, meaning your chances of finding and getting hired to a career or job you like are highest with an engineering degree? Making getting the degree still worth it even if you dont like working as an engineer
Do you play elden ring? Think if it like Elden ring classes.. u can start off ME and lean toward other fields if you’d like via certificates , AA , BA etc…
As a mechanical design engineer, u should have the knowledge of the machine for which part is gonna be installed or to be machined😊let it be CNC, VMC, VTL, or SPM's
Do you do actual hands on working on products not just in cad? If so how often do you do that or what type of job similar to this would involve more of that

This is not relevant just to mechanical engineers. This is called being an adult and working. If you choose to work for a large company, then yes, you are surrounded by structure. On the flip side, smaller companies might offer greater variety of experiences, but they have less funding to sponsor your development and are unlikely to have structure that prevents some of the painful experiences like lack of respect. I'm that manager from the video. My two pieces of advice is to find the job you like even if it is located across the world. Do this while you are young. When you have house, family, and commitments, it will be near impossible to go for many of the exciting jobs. Pay rises, career growth all that will come. The second piece, the person you report to, is crucial. If they genuinely want you to grow, they will teach you and accelerate your career. If not, you will make slow progress. Find a good team leader who can become your coach.

I am mechanical engineer in the field of manufacturing battery for electrical vehicles in korea. And I wanna have a job in the California near LA. thank you, prevent effect of global warming, minerals and temperature of water and air from sea are huge source of energy, reduce more than 50% using fossil fuel, fresh water, fertilizer(minerals+o2,n2,C), zero pollution, economy will rise by using jet plasma machine and compressed gas(Air) in isolated structure in water pool with more than 80 % efficiency, it has two vertical cylinders, in first level it transfers compressed gas(hot air) temperature from engine to sea water in pool for steam electric generator, steam combines with high cold Air pressure to produce pure water and electricity , New energy from sea will change world soon, there are other source of energy that with international cooperation in coastline we can reduce effect of global warming, further more we can prevent these phenomena like cyclone and flood and wildfire by using this hot seasonal atmospheric condition, recent years in summer, geothermal energy happens in surface of coastline, there are many countries in coastline with seasonal hot weather and water condition in comparison with temperature of middle Ocean, its more than 12 degrees ,this differences must decrease, in sum-up, by using this energy not only is economical but also reduce global warming in countries like Japan, China, India, Mediterranean countries, Iran, Brazil, Mexico, Us, Canada, (Africa and Arabian countries....) . I invented new method base on air pressure rules and quantum physics ionization sea water minerals in strong dynamic permanent magnet(SMCO) with special frequency(1500or 3000)/minute bases on paramagnetic and diamagnetic particles and electrical microwave electron wave field and electric chemical reactions and photon wave from semiconductors with special angle Cations like(K+, Mg++, Na+, H+, H++, li+, H2, ...) are transferred to in the second level into up level by vacuum pump from storage into combustion chambers and they combine with O2 and N2 ,... as major part of fuel for producing electricity and fresh water (removed minerals by accelerate ionization sys from sea water) and fertilizer. this machine produces 150Megwatt/hour and 20000M3/DAY fresh water and fertilizer. 7 methods zero pollution for reducing global warming I mentioned in my profile. (G20 countries can solve these phenomena).
