OUTBOARD ENGINE STALLS

  • Over a period of 15 years three different boat engine mechanics told my outboard engine stalled because it was not getting enough fuel. Rebuild carbs, replace fuel pump. One even told me it was the trigger coil. They were all wrong. My engine was getting too much fuel causing it to flood and stall when accelerating. It runs like crazy now. Watch my video and learn.

Sir I hope you see this comment. I have a 1984 johnson 70hp. I was having the same issue. I came across your video tinkered with my motor and it fixed my stalling issue. Thank you sooo much! Wanted you to know.

howdoes it shift when its idling that high must really bang into gear

    • @BuckarooEngineering

I can assure you that shifting is not a problem. Since the gear box has no syncro to engage the gears, shifting must be firm and fast. In the water, the idle will be between 1000 and 1500 RPM. That is 2000 to 2500 out of the water with the boot.

    what about the idleadjust screw

yes, that fooled me for years. In my opinion it is not a preferred way to set the idle because it moves the carb linkage. Idle should only be adjusted by moving the timing of cylinder one before top dead center ignition. The most important thing is to not let the throttle move the carb linkage before about 2500 RPM or the engine will flood and stall.

ya my 76 70 evinrude does just that oh and my throttle linkage is the otherway yours looks like its upside down my service manual shows it straight across the one going to the cam and the manual says to have it at a length of 4 31/32 but mines a 76

    Spec is 750 800 rpm

That information is very helpful. It runs best out of the water at 2000-2500 with boot which will change to 1000 rpm when put into the water. Higher rpms keeps the engine hot enough to ignite the gas oil mixture. Water temp should be at least 200 f.
