I got to work Murdoch two times. After our first match, he had the promoter have me get my gear, and go in the HEEL locker room so he could talk to me. I thought I did something wrong, so I was a little intimidated. What he did was sit me down and give me pointers on a few things to make me better. He didn't have to do that. Our next match, we were walking to our locker rooms and he winked at me. I did him proud. It was an honor to have shared the ring with him.

Murdoch was known for being one of the best workers in the business, when he wanted to be and one of the biggest goofballs, when he wanted. It depended on his mood. I can see Murdoch in the WWF environment, especially 90s WWF, and deciding to goof with people. The man could do heel or shit-kicking babyface equally well.

Working with Dusty Rhodes as the Texas Outlaws, Dick was great as a heel. But, in later years in CWF, he would also occasionally work as a face, and he pulled that off as well. There is a hysterical clip from CWF that you can find on TH-cam, where Bugsy McGraw needs a partner against the Russians (Koloff, Volkoff, etc), and he recruits Murdoch, still wearing his street clothes. The great Gordon Solie points out to Dick, "You haven't even got your wrestling trunks on." Without missing a beat Murdoch replies, "Gordon, I don't even have my underwear on!"

@@dildonius I've heard Tony tell a version where Murdoch gave him an address of a BBQ after the matches. Tony is known for his narration being quite loose compared to earlier and later versions. I take everything Tony says with a grain of salt after hearing the looong interview his stepdaughter gave Boston Wrestling. For example: her mother and her NEVER had to "chip Tony out of the ice on the ground" in the park where he was sleeping. Dick's face was a bloody mess through most of the match, the proverbial crimson mask. Late in the match, Murdoch got his revenge by kicking the Shiek right in the crotch where he was hiding the foreign object. The crowd popped on that one...

NOt sure I would call Dick Murdoch a good person, given that there have been reports of him being in the KKK, but I can agree that he had great talent.

Was the 6'10" guy in Puerto Rico around that time when Dick Murdock booked the territory, was it Giant Warrior?
He's the only guy I can think of when Dutch described a 6' 10" or so wrestler in that territory, since most guys down there were not bigger than 5'10"

I'm pretty sure the Dutch was talking about Giant Warrior, Butch Masters in Puerto Rico my first night in Puerto Rico doing the Leatherface gimmick Butch was supposed to take the pin for me and I didn't see it but evidently he put his leg on the rope or something and Dickie jumped in the ring and kick the dog shit out of him again just put the boots to him stiff for shoot. And I never knew why they had so much heat because Giant warrior was easy to work with did whatever I wanted to do in the ring.

Murdoch was noted throughout his career for his twisted sense of humor, he loved having fun and didn't really have an Off Switch, it's one of the reasons why he never achieved the Main Event status he should have. The KKK thing was part of that, he just liked watching people freak out.
