In his prime, Buzz was as good as it got. He looked legit, both tough and crazy. He had the best powerslam in the business, past or present. And Ole booked him to perfection. The face turn that teamed him with his brother was great for a pop, but fizzled out after because Buzz was terribly miscast as a good guy. He kind of bounced around from place to place after that, but drugs and his unpredictability leading to promoters not trusting him kept him from ever reaching the heights he did in his prime. He had a nice run with Muta and Gary Hart against Flair and Sting for a while, but that's basically the only thing of note after he left Georgia.
Tommy Rich also said the bus oil didn't take Liberties and wasn't rough on him like he was everybody else cuz I believe Tommy told him if you pulled that shit with me I won't work with you
A-hole or not, Buzz Sawyer is one of the most gifted, physical, and entertaining pro wrestlers ever. His three year main event run on the most popular wrestling program in the world, Georgia Championship Wrestling is a must see and should be required studying for all new aspiring wrestlers. Awesome in the ring, awesome on the microphone. There was nothing fake about a Buzz Sawyer match. My personal all time favorite.
I heard a story in a brick house brown shoot interview where he said that buzz forced himself on miss Texas when she was new in the business or trying to break in the business.
Mid Atlantic wrestling! I live in Australia now, but I grew up watching it when I lived in North Carolina and went to a lot of tv takings at WRAL studios and shows at Dorton Arena in Raleigh.
Dutch is a down to earth dude!!! I remember him in Mid Atlantic for a little while..not long though...ask Corny about Buzz he'll give you the low down on that crack head!!!
Buzz was a legit amateur, at least at the state level, but he was crazy enough to keep coming at you. Saw the latter days of his feud with Tommy Rich. Buckets of blood. Gary Capetta told the story in his book, of Undertaker in WCW, with Buzz there. He rode with Capetta a bit and he was stewing and Capetta got him to open up and he told him about Buzz coning him, after he borrowed the money to pay him, from his brother. He confronted Buzz, but Buzz had no memory of him and his brain was so fried from the drugs that he was probably telling the truth. He basically told Undertaker to go ahead, as he had it coming; but, Taker could see the lights were off in his head and just left it at that. Buzz was gone soon after. Buzz actually did have a school later, and actually trained a few people, without disappearing. Cornette had one of his students on the Experience, a few years back. When Magnum was in Mid-South, they were doing huge business; so, I would take Dutch's assessment with a grain of salt, though maybe compared to expenses on vehicles, it might not have paid enough. Cornette has talked about what they were making and Magnum was working the upper card, with Wrestling II against the Midnights and then in singles against II, when he turned heel. Magnum started in Portland (and did a few dates for All-Star, in Vancouver), for about 6 months, then Southwest Championship, for another 6, then Florida, for about a year and a half, then Mid-South, then Crockett.
I heard a video the other day about Steve Blackman getting hell in Japan from Buzz Sawyer and Vader and wanting to beat both of them up but it was in his contractt to not get into fights. I guess he is okay with Vader now but has not ever seen Buzz Sawyer again.
Magnum TA, The Undertaker, Buzz Sawyer, John Tenta, Edge, Chris Jericho, The Godfather, Tracy Smothers, Rick Rude, Mad Dog Vachon, Hawk, Animal, Scott Norton, Samoa Joe, Braun Strowman, Ken Shamrock, Bad News Brown, John Cena etc All these guys were bouncers before they were wrestlers.
Not as a knock against any of these guys, but when I learned what kind of money they were _actually_ making back in the day I was amazed. It had to be about something more than money to work your way up back then. I was making good money for a young guy back then but I never realized my $400 a week take-home ('86) was comparable to what many of those guys were making. Sure, I busted my butt, but I certainly wasn't laying it on the line like those guys... not by a long shot. Yeah, the big names did a lot better, and I guess it was the dream of hitting the elite level that kept them going, but, damn they worked hard for their money.
I still cannot believe that when Buzz Sawyer was in WCW in 1989 and working against Sting and Flair...................he and Sting were the same age......................
Kevin Nash has a Buzz Sawyer story (got ripped off). Buzz was an incredible talent. One of the most athletic wrestlers I've ever seen. And, evidently, was a scumbag.
I saw the whole feud with Buzz and Tommy Rich in GCW when I was in high school and never missed a Sat night on TBS. It was the biggest story in the territory for months. Buzz may have been an asshole as a person but give him props for that.
I think Buzz Sawyer and Tommy Rich would beat the crap out of each other in the ring, then after the match go back to the hotel and put away a case of beer and several grams of coke between them.
Now days appears Buzz would be in very high demand for these Brain Injury experts to study. I saw somewhere Buzz would ram his head into concrete walls & metal poles to show off how hard his head is..
I don't think I ever saw or met Buzz Sawyer.. He was gone from the NWA/WCW when I started going in the fall of 1990. Did meet his brother Brett though. 🤔
Does anyone know if dark side of ring is doing a party marty episode? Is it true? I love marty. I really hope hes Doing better. He never is afraid to tell stories that other guys would never touch. I'm surprised he wasnt offed by now. He let so many dirty secrets out in his shoots.

If a respectful man like Mr. Mantell call you a a-hole, you must be quite a human being to deal with.
Good work as always, Dutch and James
Exactly. If a nice guy like Arn kicks your teeth out, you better believe he deserved it
I remember watching the Buzz Sawyer Tommy Rich Feud, he was definitely believable as a nutcase
Tommy Rich also said the bus oil didn't take Liberties and wasn't rough on him like he was everybody else cuz I believe Tommy told him if you pulled that shit with me I won't work with you
Dutch is such a nice guy,for him to call you a asshole means you had to really earn your stripes.
My personal all time favorite.
lol
Well said. Buzz was the definition of a legit badass
He was average at best
@@BuddWX exactly, laughter is the only response to his silly comment lol
It was a true comment
I heard a story in a brick house brown shoot interview where he said that buzz forced himself on miss Texas when she was new in the business or trying to break in the business.
Buzz sawyer squash matches were AWESOME.
buzz was the wrestler that hooked me back in 81
Mid Atlantic wrestling! I live in Australia now, but I grew up watching it when I lived in North Carolina and went to a lot of tv takings at WRAL studios and shows at Dorton Arena in Raleigh.
In his book "Bodyslams" Gary Michael Capetta details how the Undertaker got robbed by Buzz Sawyer. Undertaker borrowed the money from his brother.
Buzz Sawyer was a crazy Florida boy and a legit bad ass .
Tommy Rich vs Buzz Sayer seen them twice in Cincinnati in the early 80s best matches I ever seen
That was the bomber motel in Oregon
I accept that Buzz was an asshole, but his suplexes are the most powerful I’ve ever seen.
Dutch is good listen
Dutch is a down to earth dude!!! I remember him in Mid Atlantic for a little while..not long though...ask Corny about Buzz he'll give you the low down on that crack head!!!
Ask Dutch about Mike Jackson sometime.
I'll take that energy over the tumbling routines any day.
Buzz seemed like one of those guys that would talk tough but then he'd run whenever someone wanted to fight him.
I hate peoples like buzz. Easy enough just to train them than to screw them over.
They hate you too
Buzz was a legit amateur, at least at the state level, but he was crazy enough to keep coming at you.
Buzz Sawyer was one bad dude on TV. Enjoyed watching him.
Tuesday Oct 14, 1986 was the day the car wreck happened.
I heard a video the other day about Steve Blackman getting hell in Japan from Buzz Sawyer and Vader and wanting to beat both of them up but it was in his contractt to not get into fights. I guess he is okay with Vader now but has not ever seen Buzz Sawyer again.
From what I've read, Jim Crockett (Mid Atlantic) and Don Owen (Portland) both paid well. Owen in particular was known for being fair.
Magnum TA, The Undertaker, Buzz Sawyer, John Tenta, Edge, Chris Jericho, The Godfather, Tracy Smothers, Rick Rude, Mad Dog Vachon, Hawk, Animal, Scott Norton, Samoa Joe, Braun Strowman, Ken Shamrock, Bad News Brown, John Cena etc All these guys were bouncers before they were wrestlers.
I heard charges were filed against Buzz
Ric Flair just said that "He'll never be in the Hall of Fame". That sums it up.
Love buzz
Meet him many times when I was stationed at Ft Benning
He was cool
And seen him at the Last Battle of Atlanta against Tommy Rich
Kevin Nash has a Buzz Sawyer story (got ripped off). Buzz was an incredible talent. One of the most athletic wrestlers I've ever seen. And, evidently, was a scumbag.
How can you put a person like Buzz Sawyer in the Hall of Fame when he basically scammed other prospects?
They put people there because of their talent personal affaire are not why they put or don't put there.
Magna T.A. actually had to turn into Magnum P.I. to find Buzz lol
No detective work was needed. Jimmy Garvin just told him where Buzz was.
Imagine how many people he scammed if we only hear about magnum and taker?
Buzz Sawyer and Matt Osborne were heels in real life
I saw the whole feud with Buzz and Tommy Rich in GCW when I was in high school and never missed a Sat night on TBS.
His brother was kinda the same way
Ken Shamrock can confirm that he would scam guys trying to break in! Ken would be his man to beat on the guys trying out!
I was a fan of Buzz back in the day. I am always so sad to hear of his issues. I think Ken Shamrock describes it well.
I don't think I ever saw or met Buzz Sawyer.. He was gone from the NWA/WCW when I started going in the fall of 1990. Did meet his brother Brett though. 🤔
Where can you see dark side of the ring?
Arn Anderson had the best story about Buzz being an asshole b/c it ended with him knocking out Buzz's teeth.
Does anyone know if dark side of ring is doing a party marty episode? Is it true? I love marty. I really hope hes Doing better. He never is afraid to tell stories that other guys would never touch. I'm surprised he wasnt offed by now. He let so many dirty secrets out in his shoots.
When I was a kid I thought Buzz was crazy. As an adult, I thought he was acting crazy. I guess the kid in me was right all along.
Taker had a good story on buzz when he was 1st trying he said he’d rob guys of they’re money and skip town lol 🤦🏻♂️
Yeah it was cool. Taker took Buzz's dogs as compensation and then told Buzz about it to his face. Manly stuff.
@@ByrneMJames lol yup exactly 😂
Buzz was only wrestler seen get beat up by jobbers he still win but made the match one of my fav
Neither Magnum nor Dutch nor Taker wanted any part of Buzz Sawyer. Period.
10/14/1986 Magnum's car wreck, Tuesday
The first time I saw Buzz Sawyer was most likely back in 83. I was nine or ten years old and had been watching wrestling for a couple of years. All I knew back then was that the Mad dogs shit look real!! He was one of the guys guilting of having me believe wrestling was a shoot and not to work. Cool name and cool gimmick but apparently not a cool guy. Rip Buzz
I heard this same story from Jim Cornette. Classic story.
Tommy and Buzz was a great feud. Yall should have Tommy Rich on the show
Think it happened either on the 9th or 23rd of October.
I always wondered if everyone that fucked over Mark Calaway like Buzz, and Ole Anderson later went around taking the credit when the Undertaker became a success
