  • Having become something of an unwitting poster-child for getting ratings quickly, I thought I would use today's video to share with you why I think accelerated flight training is so beneficial for the vast majority of pilots. Hope you enjoy!

    SUGGESTION: Do a breakdown for the Non-Entrepreneurial people of how to go about being an independent CFI,...incorporating, insurance, coordinating planes, advertising, etc. Seems like a lot of new "hats" to wear, but maybe worth it for pay & more busy accumulating hours than a flight school CFI job would be. I have no idea, and fear of violating some law, or getting sued for some unknown error.

    Love your channel and agree with what you’re saying. Saying that so you know I’m not a troll when I ask, do you slow down your videos? I normally watch all TH-cam videos at 1.5 and I speed yours up to 2.0. Curious if you’re slowing them down to hit a certain video length. At normal speed it legitimately sounds slow motion.

    This was an interesting video to watch, given where I am with my flight training, and how long it took me to just get my private pilots license. I definitely understand your journey, given that you are in your 50s and you want to go to the Airlines. So, time is of the essence. I will say that some folks who may be thinking of, flying for pleasure, maybe a little bit more time in the process is part of the goal. I will say that I would like to know this instrument rating out, but being 57, and knowing that I am not going to the Airlines, kind of puts me in a different frame of mind in terms of the need for speed. I definitely agree with you brother that there are retention things that go on when you’re training more consistently. Thanks for the video, definitely food for thought for sure.

    Hey Trent had a question. I'm currently working on my private but already logged about 80 hours flight time since June. Working towards Commercial, (part 141) school. I feel like I'm behind on my training but when I mention this to my instructor he claims it usually takes 2 years to get all my ratings. Based on my research it should only take about 1 year on average. I am flying 4 to 5 times per week. Am I missing something? Any suggestions on what I should do to speed things up. Just feel like I'm spinning in circles.
    Keep up the great work! Love your videos!

    • @trent_dyrsmid

      The cost to attain ratings varies with how fast or slow you learn. As for being Canadian, I don’t have information about that because I did my training in the USA. The school that I attended is headed into their worst weather of the year….plus they have a large waitlist. So…to help my viewers get trained faster, I’ve just formed a partnership with a terrific school in Arizona. You can watch a video about it here flywithtrent.com/flight-training-in-mesa/

    If I were to do it all over again, I would have invested in a share with a flying club then find my own private instructor. 250 total time X .07 = 175 Tach hours but you still log250 hobbs hours in your log book. $120 X 175= +/- $21,000 in airplane rental cost. Still need the flight instructor. And even think about a glider rating to further lower the cost note it states under commercial rating regulations you need a total of 250 hours of which 100 hours needs to be in powered aircraft, that means you can use a glider to build your total flying time. Plus I would also consider ASES prior to 250 hour mark.

    I am looking at all kinds of different ideas. What I’d like to do is become a CFI/CFII and teach. I have no dreams of flying in the majors. I am thinking of buying a Cherokee Six and teach out of my local area (Venice Fl) and then take the pay from teaching and pay for my helicopter as a hobby/fun in an R44. That’s the dream. Thoughts on this?

    • @trent_dyrsmid
      @trent_dyrsmid  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As a CFI you’d be hard pressed to earn more than about $5-6k per month (at least based upon my experience) and that isn’t nearly enough money to do what you have described. The exception is if you owned your own plane. Then, assuming the plane was acquired for under $300k, you could expect to double your income….unless of course the plane breaks down a lot.

      Hi Ronald….it depends on a variety of factors. The most important of which is how much you’ll need to invest in maintenance. If you have an engine failure, your TCO will skyrocket and tenting would have been much less expensive. Same for resale. If the economy softens, when you need to resell the plane and need to take a big loss, then renting, would’ve also been cheaper.

      Jkilpatrick5214, you would be trained no different than if you were renting. Your luxury is owning a plane your schedule is yours. Your limitations would be your learning rate, weather, mechanicals, and instructor availability.

    Trent, what school did you get your 9 ratings at?

    • @trent_dyrsmid

      Thanks for watching! The school that I attended does not want me sharing their name on my social media because every time I do their phone explodes. They have no interest in training private pilots. The only thing that they really want to do is provide accelerated training for CFI and multi engine ratings. So…to help my viewers find a school that does want to train private pilots, I’ve just formed a partnership with a terrific school in Arizona. You can watch a video about it here flywithtrent.com/flight-training-in-mesa/

    I totally agree with your philosophy and you have proved it works. How many hours did you log during the 91 days you used to earn your 7 ratings? You must be logging 100 hours per month instructing your students. I am sure you are continuing to learn and hone your flying skills while you are instructing.

    • @trent_dyrsmid
      @trent_dyrsmid  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi George, I logged 180 hours over the 90 days and since becoming a CFI a typical week for me is about 25 hours of instruction.

    In your opinion, if a student is flying one to two times a week does the school have moral authority to consider that an accelerated program?

      No. Definitely not.

    But how much will it cost!

    • @trent_dyrsmid
      @trent_dyrsmid  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The cost depends on several factors which are hard to control. The first factor is how many ratings are you going for? The second factor is how quickly are you able to become proficient? In my private pilot video I have detailed what it typically costs for a private pilot license, which for most people is around $15-$18,000.

    My 2 cents: if you’re going to go accelerated 1. Try a bigger school. I was a part timer flying 2x a week, decided to pay up front for a full-time accelerated program and quit my job, 2 CFIs then immediately moved in their career and so I ended up flying….2x per week. The remaining CFI ended up with 25+ students to juggle so I went back to my job for the remainder of program since I wasn’t flying anymore than if I was a full time student. This wouldn’t be an issue at a bigger school. 2. In-house DPEs. Depending on your state and time of year, you may have to wait 3-6 months for a checkride opening. For my Commercial, I had to schedule out 5 months! If I had to do it over, I would move to a location where I could go full time at a bigger school with in-house DPEs and get it all done in 7-9 months vs. the 2.5 years it took me at my flight school.

      QUESTION: Do you know of a school that has full-time DPE's? (Or, a school that gets preferential DPE scheduling to a certain school's students?)--To my knowledge, I thought DPE's are independent so as to not appear to have a conflict of interest.
